The SEGA Game Archive[8/14]Slight clarification based on the Kotaku article that went up today. The room was not forgotten by anyone in SEGA, they just didn’t inform me or the other community guys that it existed. When we were doing a tour of our new space, we came across the room and made our way back to take some photos and show them around. ————————————- In a small unassuming area in the product development department is a room that contains some very special SEGA history. In this room is the SEGA archive and contains just about every game that’s come out on a SEGA console in the past and present, as well as a ton of extremely rare or strange peripherals. We stumbled upon the room when we were taking photos of the department post-move and made a point to come back for pictures so everyone can see all there is to see. We asked around about how the room came together and couldn’t get a straight answer. Some had said our old legal department had run the archive and given it up to someone else to manage. Others said that the legal archive still exists in another room in the office, and this was pulled together over time from producers and product managers. We don’t know the exact how or why, but we love that it exists and immediately accessible. The shelves are packed with games from all the great consoles of SEGA past, as well as games from competitor consoles. Each shelf is a bit deceptive in the photos, as they are all double packed with games behind games. While walking through the room, everyone had a game they found on the shelf that had a fond memory. There are too many games for me to pull up one that really made me smile among the whole group, I found myself more interested in the peripherals that I never had a chance to play with. Most of the games aren’t even shelved and appear stacked from floor to ceiling. Most of the larger peripherals are also along the walls. I geeked out a bit here and was pulling up the Twin Sticks for SEGA Saturn, I always wanted to play VirtuaOn the way it was meant to be played. In the middle are larger metal drawers, which I had thought would contain file folders and paper work. Instead, they are pretty much filled to the brim with odds and ends. One drawer opened to reveal a ton of Genesis control pads in plastic bags, there must have been at least fifty or sixty. Other drawers have spindles of old sega silvers (final games playable games on regular CD/DVDs) and another with a ton of cables. Currently the room is being used for storage and archive reasons, but I’m told the goal is to create a place where anyone can rent these games for personal use! Think of it as a movie rental space, with a full check out system, and full access… we all cannot wait. Once the room is up and we can actually rent from it, then we’ll be sure to get our hands dirty with some classic adventures. Until then, enjoy the rest of the photos on our Flickr page in full high res!

I would kill to have that room. By the way, I’m against you guys renting anything out. It should stay stored and secure forever.

Renting it out = terrible idea. You don’t come across a find like that then let people cover it in jam and chocolate.
There’s enough material in there to turn it into an extremely impressive museum. Please, think beyond simply making a few dollars and do something more worthwhile with it.

Added a small clarification for the new traffic from Kotaku. The room was not forgotten by anyone at SEGA, it’s been in operation for a while now, as you can see. The room itself is run out of our product development group, they maintain it and keep it in shape.
No one had informed us (in the community team) that the room existed, and when touring the new building we came across it, took some photos, and did a blog on the space. We think it’s pretty cool, we thought others would think so too.

I was wondering if someone at Sega of America could confirm for me the situation with the later model Sega Saturns. I’m an American citizen who has been living in Brazil for 11 years now, and I’ve been doing some Saturn archiving of my own. I’ve come across pretty much every model of Saturn made in Brazil which includes the famous White and Skeleton models. The white model was launched here in Brazil in 1999 and the skeleton model in 2000, both dates confirmed by TecToy of Brazil. Were these models originally destined for American shores? I’m guessing that they may have been since they both contain an NTSC-U bios, but were slightly modified to run in PAL-M 60hz mode. TecToy of Brazil refuses to comment on any of this. My speculation is that a load of these white and skeleton model consoles were originally headed for American shores, but with the demise of the Saturn in the United States in late ’97, ended up in Brazil instead where the Saturn market was still quite strong through the year 2000. Any thoughts or comments on this are welcome.
One other side note. Through sheer luck I scored a slightly used Skeleton model because I didn’t want to use the boxed one I had in mint condition. It just so happens that as I was cleaning it up, I noticed a strange chip on the motherboard where I hadn’t ever seen one before. I took a few pictures, cleaned the Saturn up and fired it up. Low and behold it was the last Japanese bios running only in NTSC-U mode. I found it extremely odd that this console would only run NTSC-U originals and not NTSC-J originals. What’s even stranger is that the console had the factory plugs from TecToy on the screw holes on the bottom confirming that the console had never been opened or modified by anyone other than TecToy themselves. TecToy again refused to comment on this anomaly so I’m left to speculate as to why they would make a console with a special Japanese bios chip that ran only American originals. Any thoughts or comments?

Instead of making a rental thing, I think you should take all those titles and make them into a sort of museum. If Sega has turned so greedy that they simply MUST make money off such an amazing historical find, then it can have big screen TVs with the systems hooked up and people could pay certain ammount of money for hourly access to the consoles. The games shouldn’t be allowed out into the public’s hands tho. I can just imagine someone renting Panzer Dragoon Saga or Shining Force III and returning it with a big scratch.
I also noticed that there are a lot of repeats (in Sega CD section there are 5 Dark Wizards and 3 Shining Force CDs) but there are actually a few titles missing (at least I did not see any Lunar or Snatcher titles for Sega CD)
Also missing (from what I saw) are Dragon Force (saturn) and Shining Force (Genesis).
By the way, if “what is in the room stays in the room”, then why did you say “I plan on heading back over to see if we can get some hands on time with some older gems.” (http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2008/07/16/the-great-sega-move/)

why doesn’t Sega release some of it’s classics on Live or PSN? Seeing a room like this makes me sad because so much of Sega’s past library can’t be played by most people. You made a Genesis emulator for DC so why can’t you release some Saturn classics like PDS and SF 3 which are expensive right now on PSN or Live? Make an emulator (like Sony did for ps1) and let the gaming community play all the classics they always hear about. People would easily pay $15-$20 for those games. Just seems like common sense to me. It would be doing yourselves a favor and your fans one as well.

I can see the rental agreement now.
Return a game late: $5/day
Scratch/Damage/Lose a game: A beating with a big stick
At least that would be my rental agreement if that were my stuff. But if that were my stuff I wouldn’t be renting it out. I would imagine some of that stuff is too valuable to just rent it out.

You should really hire a company historian to tag and document this room and research and publish the company’s full product history, including some of the failed products or products that never made it to market. That would be a really interesting volume to read. Oh, and convince Nintendo to do the same thing.
& in my personal opinion, Sega Genesis, Atari 2600, and Nintendo64 consoles-games-&peripherals should all still be on the market today. The only new console i’ve really liked alot since the demises of the Sega Genesis and the Nintendo64 consoles has been the Xbox360, and i have a sneaky suspicion that part of that is because it reminds me of an old Sega or Nintendo system and that part of why i like the system is also because Sega seems to have had alot to do with both the development of some of the games and the development of the system itself as well from what i can tell.
Oh and why does no one seem to remember anymore that during the hey dey/peak of the Genesis-Era in the early-mid 1990s that Sega had a facility, in Japan unfortunately, for pretty much anyone in the world to go and play their games and have fun, and that demand was so high there was pretty much a giant waiting list that started to form in order to get time inside. Also, why does no one seem to remember that at one time Sega had a contest for a ordinarykid/fan to help design a new Sega video game? Sometimes I wonder if anyone pays attention to anything anymore, lol.
oh and does anyone know if the Duke Nuke-Em sequal that was hyped forever&ever was ever released for N64 or not? because I’m originally from central pennsylvania where it is usually hard to find anything for video game consoles, and the N64 was already almost dead in my area in 2000/2001, i barely was able to purchase the 2nd 007game made for N64 and the Hydro Thunder game for N64 b4 all the stores started pulling the consoles and shortly thereafter the games from the shelves.
&it still sucks that by the time i could ever afford to buy a system and start buying a few games for it that it is already being replaced by the “next-gen” set of systems from all the companies. ugh. the N64 in my area basically only had a 2-3year shelf life- because by the time it gained enough popularity away from genesis to be finally offered in my area in 1998, (a full two years after i played the crusin’ usa arcade game in 1996-the same year that the cruis’n usa game is usually copyrighted for N64) it was only around for two-3 years until 2000/2001 before it got replaced by the playstation1&2 and the game cube.
*note, playstation 1 was actually still on store shelves in my area for a couple years almost after N64 was pulled off of them, which is total crap in my opinion because N64 is a way better system then the PS1
*note2: Sega Genesis versions especially Genesis2&3& sometimes the 32bitGenesis and rarely the original 16-bitGenesis could still be found until 1999/2000 in my area. the converter to allow the 16bit console to function as the 32bit console could still be found until 1998/1999 continuously and sporadically in some places until 2001.

A friend of mine sent me this lilnk.
Is this room in the building on Townsend and 8th? If it is, I’m the person who set it up. About 11(?) years ago, when SOA moved into that building, I was working as a paralegal temp in the Legal department there, mostly managing Legal files, discovery, library, and , of course, the library.
I scoured the entire office immediately after the move to put together a software & hardware archive, with at least one copy of every game, system and peripheral Sega ever produced. I even convinced them to buy a television for the archive room, to which I hooked up every single system. It was pretty much the high point of my life up to that time.
Based on what you’ve written here, it may be the same archive I assembled back then, even if it’s been moved since.

I’ve been looking for an old Genesis game that I used to play as a kid on Sega Channel (I realize this sounds nearly identical to the “Shadowrun” post made in August), and I can’t seem to find it anywhere. All I remember about the game is that it was a side-scrolling adventure game where the main character had a bracelet or magic bracer that could be used as a type of purple grappling beam. You could latch on to things and raise and lower yourself to explore through the levels. The only other thing I can remember about it was one level was a jungle level. I know both these clues are pretty vague, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Damn I want those Genesis controllers. My Genesis works, but the controllers are busted.
