Man I was hopeing for Shining Force II Sword of Hajya for the Game Gear would be unlockable. I guess I’ll have to deal with all 4 Phantasy Stars and Shining Force I and II.
Got to leave something unlockable for the “Ultimate Sega CD Collection”

Is this the full list, or might there be more? I’m very surprised that the Sega Master System Sonic the Hedgehog games aren’t on the list. One or more Alex Kidd games from before the horrible Genesis game would have made sense, too.
Not meaning to complain. I’m SUPER excited that Golden Axe Warrior and Phantasy Star are on there. I was just hoping for a bit more SMS love, that’s all.

Can I ask a question? Will the Sonic games have the “& Knuckles” capabilities? So you can play Sonic 3 with knuckles?

Whoa, good point, Kefka.
With Sonic’s name on it, this collection had better have “Sonic 3 & Knuckles.” It’s the true “Sonic 3,” greater than the sum of its two parts. To put it another way, one plus one makes three. XD

Hey, the true arcade version of Altered Beast? Interesting, haven’t played that in ages. Its considerably less bad than the Genesis version I believe. Having all four Phantasy Stars confirmed is a nice touch as well. Still hoping for Sega Solitaire and Pulseman!

This list is great!
I just wish you have “Sonic CD” on there as unlocktable.
In other forums everyone only talk about it!
Shadow Dancer should be there too, because if you have first and third shinobi, that would cut the story.
And I can’t believe you don’t have Ecco Jr. on it, it is my favorite game of all time!!!

Ok, unlocktables are weird.
Like someone want to play zaxxon, fantasy zone, congo bongo, and more. The only unlocktable that I like is Golden Axe Warrior!
Why didn’t they put Sonic CD on there instead of this baloney games.
And no one like to play dinamyte headdy, which is produced by “Treasure”. And Gunstar Heroes is also produced by “Treasure”, and people are crazy about it, I Just don’t get it!
Why didn’t they put something like “voting poll” on their site and people decide what games do they want. That would make more sense+SEGA would make tons of cash on it!
And if they did not put “Knuckles in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Blue Sphere” I can tell that they will loose a lot of costumers! And what with all this “upgrades”?!!! Maybe “Angry Video Game Nerd” should make video about this game! But still only $30, I’m so buying this game! But WHY THE HECK THERE IS NO ECOO JR.?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe they just saving game for the future collections……………………………….

@ Comment #15: Why would Mortal Kombat be on a SEGA collection? This collection can contain only games published by SEGA, and Midway’s series certainly does NOT fit that description.
Also, @Kellie: Why haven’t you posted back about the Knuckles thing yet? It’s been over a week, after all. Seems like you should know the answer by now.

I’ll answer this then… Sonic & Knuckles is not combinable with Sonic 2 or 3 in the collection I’m afraid.
Also Sonic CD is a Mega CD/SEGA CD game so perhaps it will materialise another time should SEGA do a compilation of games that were launched with the console add-ons. I’m sure lots of you would like a chance to play some of the 32X titles for instance.
Sonic CD is also available on the Sonic Gems Collection incidentally.

@ArchangelUK: Mind telling us WHY, then? Why has that feature not been included since Sonic Mega Collection Plus? Really, this collection’s title is a COMPLETE misnomer with the “Ultimate” thing, as it’s obviously far from it.
Okay, Yarko, I agree that they should make those collections. I’m getting tired of repeated Genesis collections while other systems get ignored. But could you please lay off the exclamation points? Total overkill.

I must confess that a lack of the lock-on games is incredibly disappointing, but that *is* what I have my Sega Nomad for. I just look forward to a day when I can see this as the announced list of a compilation:
NiGHTS Into Dreams (Saturn)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
Astal (Saturn)
Sonic CD (Sega CD)
Shining Force III (Saturn)
Prince of Persia (Sega CD)
Jurassic Park (Sega CD)
Dungeon Explorer (Sega CD)
Wing Commander (Sega CD)
Shining Force CD (Sega CD)
Virtua Fighter (Sega 32X)
Knuckles Chaotix (Sega 32X)
Panzer Dragoon (Saturn)
Golden Axe: The Duel (Saturn)
Sim City 2000 (Saturn)
Panzer Dragoon II (Saturn)
Sonic 3-D Blast (Saturn)
House of the Dead (Saturn)
That would make my day, even it destroyed collectors (as for why that, all those games are either Sega produced or Sega published).

I’m only getting this for the arcade games, as well as other games I have yet to play. I will of course, not be playing the Sonic games. In fact, this shouldn’t even be called “Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection”, nor should any Sonic games be on here if they’re not going to include the three lock-on’s. I liked “Sega Genesis Ultimate Collection” better.
And another thing, if Sega decides to switch gears and offer the three lock-on’s as paid DLC (the two versions support their respective game networks), I am going to be very upset…
Otherwise, if Sega ever releases another compilation feature said lock-on games, then I’ll think about playing the Sonic games on this one.

is it absolutely certain that Sonic and Knuckles is not combinable with Sonic 3? This was the main reason I and many others were going to buy this game. I’ve already seen several people cancel their order because of the comment above. I myself will not be buying the game if this turns out to be true, and I understand it was not the case for the previous ‘collection’ games….

Indeed it is, it’s quite a terrible port though. Lots of bugs and errors both of acoustical and graphical nature, some paths are blocked, some game mechanics wiped out… Oh, and of course the PAL version only features the inferior soundtrack.
Don’t mind me, just playing Chaotix and the Japanese version of Sonic CD on my combo of a MDII with 50hz/60hz and region switches, a MCDII with multibios chip and and American 32X. Hohoho.

Did Zaxxon or Congo Bongo ever see an arcade-perfect home port though? I#d be quite interested in the former.
Also SEGA needs to bring over the SEGA Ages collectionn to the West. Especially the Phantasy Star, Monster World, Treasure, Fantasy Zone and Space Harrier ones.

OK, that’s really stupid. Sega would have to be incredibly dumb to not include Sonic 2 & Knuckles & Sonic 3 & Knuckles in this compilation. Why would they include just about every Genesis Sonic game on here, but not those two? Surely they have plenty of space for those games alone for both DVD 9 & Blu-Ray.

I must say that finding out that Sonic & Knuckles is not combinable with Sonic 3 or Sonic 2, disappoints me greatly. Disappointment to the point where I had to cancel my pre-order of the game. If it is provided later via patch or DLC, I’ll gladly buy the game, but until then, I have to say no this time.

IMHO, they probably “figured” that the “target audience” for this collection would already
have the previous collections that featured them (Sonic Jam for Sega Saturn, Sonic Mega
Collection for Gamecube, and SMC Plus for PS2 and original Xbox; the latter console no longer being accepted at GameStop as of today), so they also “figure” that including them
wouldn’t be necessary, esepcially since the PS2 version is still available new.
However, as others have pointed out, the “lock-on” feature was the main selling point of
Sonic and Knuckles when it first came out, especially since Sonic 3 and S&K were
originally supposed to be one game. The lock-on feature made it possible to play the
version of Sonic 3 they (meaning STI, the original developers) originally meant to give us.
However, since SUGC will not include this game (or the other two), this essentially means
that the game is being ‘cut in half. We can’t play as Tails in S&K, and we can’t play as
Knuckles in Sonic 3; some people like to do that. This “decision” (assuming it’s official)
doesn’t really benefit either the “target audience” or any other players in the long run,
especially those who either don’t have, or don’t like the older consoles I just mentioned.
Unless Sega is willing to give some kind of official statement on this issue, I personally
have to assume that this is the case.
In any case, I repeat, I am only getting this for the arcade games, and other games I
missed out on. I mean, how many arcade collections (that weren’t composed of remakes)
have been released in the United States anyway? Not many, I don’t think. So for me at
least, I’ll have some classic arcade games, even if it doesn’t have the three lock-on
games (which I still want, don’t get me wrong; I’m still disappointed that they aren’t on here).
Sorry for the “wall of text”, but I really had to get this off my chest.

Why does SEGA only puts its own games on collection?!
If the games that were produced by others companies were developed by SEGA, that means SEGA has rights to them!
They miss this games:
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster’s Hidden Treasure
Tiny Toon Adventures: ACME All Stars
Tom & Jerry
Boogerman
Clayfighter
Mortal Kombat
Toy Story
Gunstar Heroes
Battletoads
Battletoads & Double Dragon
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hyperstone Heist
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters
Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker
And a lot more!

There’s a very simple reason Sega doesn’t include whatever games they want on their collections – they don’t own the rights to them all! Just because (random example) Resident Evil games appeared on Saturn & Dreamcast doesn’t mean Sega can release their own Resident Evil collection – only Capcom can do that. There were many games listed above that don’t belong to Sega regardless of them publishing some of them.
Yarko, most of the games on your list were neither developed nor published by Sega. Sega (AFAIK) owns the rights to Gunstar Heroes (developed by Treasure), and they definitely made Moonwalker but because of the MJ license I doubt we’ll ever see that one again.
As for excluding the S&K Lock-Ons that is just pure, inexcusable stupidity. Even more so because they felt the need to name the entire collection after Sonic. I love Sega and I love Sonic (despite *much* reason not to in recent years). I own every original Sonic game (many times over), I also own Sonic Jam on Saturn (and Tiger Game.com), and the Sonic MC on GameCube, PS2 (Original AND Greatest Hits), and XBOX. I can play any of those lock on games many times over but that STILL doesn’t excuse the 5 minutes someone didn’t take to put them on HERE.
So Sega, simple solution – free DLC patch to add in what we should have gotten on our discs.
That aside what IS on the disc is well worth the price no matter how you look at it, so don’t let S&K be the deal breaker. Hell take off EVERY Sonic game and it’s still a no brainer.
Yes SMS, CD, 32X & Saturn collections are long overdue but there are still a few great Genesis games they are neglecting (that they actually own the rights to…):
Wonder Boy / Monster World (!!!)
ToeJam & Earl 1 & 2
Eternal Champions
Revenge of Shinobi
Shadow Dancer
Sword of Vermilion
Light Crusader
Rent a Hero (I know… I’m dreaming that they’ll ever release that in English)

Heck, CmdrFalcon, two of the games you listed WERE on the previous Genesis Collection (for PS2 & PSP)! Well, one if you’re in PAL territories, but still…
Sadly, I see no indication that DLC will be forthcoming for this collection, much as I would like to see S&K, and dare I say it (as it would surely piss some people off if they charged for it)…other games? Maybe ones from your list? The disc is already pure value (ask any Virtual Console fan), so paid downloadable add-on games doesn’t seem TOO bad to me (say…$5 for 5 games? That’s more per game than the base disc, and STILL a sweet deal!). Shame it’ll almost definitely never happen…
And SEGA refuses to say WHY the lock-on games aren’t on the collection. Know why? There’s no reason. Jerks.

Zack,
We’ve not refused to say why the lock-on is not included. In fact, we’ve mentioned it in the blog several times. Here’s the quote from Ethan Einhorn, the Producer of the game —
“We’re excited to bring SEGA fans nearly 50 classic games on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. We understand that some people have expressed disappointment that the title does not support the ‘Lock-On’ technology featured in the original “Sonic & Knuckles” cartridge, and wanted to provide an explanation for this. Tight development timelines are a production reality, and in this instance, we had to choose between allotting engineering hours, localization, test resources, and front-end (menu) adjustment to support ‘Lock-On’, or dropping several titles from the collection altogether. Specifically, we would have had to drop all of the bonus games from the disc, as they all required unique emulation solutions. Faced with an either/or scenario, we chose to retain our title lineup in its entirety. We hope that everybody enjoys the abundance of content this value-priced collection provides.”

Yeah, I saw that AFTER I posted my here. Fact is, I don’t buy that excuse, just as much as others on the thread in which that excuse was made don’t, and for the same reasons. Of course, the third option of delaying the game was never mentioned, nor was the fourth of planning a post-release patch or DLC pack.
So I amend the last paragraph of my previous post to read thus:
And SEGA refuses to give the REAL reason the lock-on games aren’t on the collection. Know why? Seems they think we’re gullible morons. Jerks.
If you want to keep your fanbase, you might try being honest with us for a change. Just a thought.

I just jumped back over to that post and saw the official response. It’s somewhat more reasonable than the original statement. I have to respect the need for testing with the control configurations, upconversion, and whatever else needs take place.
I (and others) would still very much like DLC to add to the game’s lineup, though. If it hasn’t been considered already, your fanbase (those of us with at least SOME understanding of your business situation, at least) would request that you do make some, both for the lock-on games and for other games that COULD have been on this collection but weren’t (Toejam & Earl along with games that were in the previous SEGA Genesis Collection come readily to mind).
I also respectfully recommend that in the future, you tell us what you’re planning a bit further in advance. If you knew that the lock-on games weren’t going to be included, you should’ve tried to get us ready to accept that fact. And been completely honest from the start. It IS the best policy, after all.
We, your fanbase, don’t mean to tell you how to run a business, but simply how to interact with your fanbase in a positive manner. I THINK there’s some level of difference between the two…

Kellie, thank you for the response. I understand quite well about constraints of time and money. I don’t mean to sound overly harsh but it often seems that in recent years Sega goes out of it’s way in the attempt to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
It didn’t come down to a matter of adding a brand new form of emulation (ie 32X or Saturn), it was merely a matter of including a combination of two games that already worked very well with the existing emulation. That frankly sounds a lot more like “oops we forgot” than “we tried to but couldn’t”.
In perspective though it is just a stupid omission that would have made the collection even more perfect. I’m just extremely grateful games like Phantasy Star I-IV, the Shining series and Golden Axe Warrior DID make the cut.
Cause let’s face it, how many collections has Nintendo released with 50 games? Well they at least have complete Zelda collections right? Or like 10 of the 10,000 Marios in one pack? Still no? Oh wait that’s because they re-release each one individually every couple of years for $50 EACH.
So yes Sega does still treat us better than many. They only real flaws with this collection:
1 – Lack of S&K lock-ons – boo.
2 – Title – don’t go out of your way to name things after a mascot that most people look down on because of an increasingly long stream of crappy games.
3 – Gallery – if you’re going to put in a gallery, make it pretty. If you get better results in a 5 sec Google image search you’ve failed.
—
Brent – No Michael Jackson game will ever be released again because he’s even less popular than Sonic…
Mortal Kombat = Midway not Sega
Street Fighter = Capcom not Sega
Fatal Fury = SNK not Sega
