Dear Streets of Rage – I Love YouThere are a couple games that I will buy and re-buy no matter where it decides to pop up, past present, or future. Streets of Rage 2 is easily one of these games and is now available on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. So naturally I secured a copy and have been playing it to death all over again. And while I already own the game on Xbox Live Arcade, but this version comes with the added bonus of Streets of Rage 1 and 3. If you haven’t played Streets of Rage, you owe it to yourself to pick this collection up for version 2 alone. This is a true SEGA classic franchise is well overdue for another sequel (I got your back Streets fans; I’ll see what I can do). All versions are based on a simple concept – booting some head in a side scrolling environment. The real fun comes in the finesse of the moves and each character’s individual play style. Each character is pretty distinct, even across all three games. I’ve always gravitated to Skate, who appears in version 2 and 3. He’s fast and hits quickly with a wide variety of grapples and attacks. He doesn’t do the most damage, but he will surprise you with a barrage of attacks from the back of the head if you aren’t careful. Other characters feature a balance of key stats, including speed, power, and technique. All characters offer a nice pace when slugging through the excellent soundtrack. Wait, did he just say soundtrack? Well, tastes may vary, but I strongly feel that Streets of Rage 2 is one of the best techno albums of the 90s – It’s just that good. And playing the game all over again had me toe-tapping my way to each face punch, groin kick, and punishing special attack. As a nice bonus, the Ultimate Genesis Collection release features an option to listen to all level tracks through the options menu, should you choose to. Streets of Rage is by far my favorite game to appear in this collection, I can’t wait for others to enjoy it this Tuesday.

I somehow never thought about it, but you’re right — the SoR music WAS really good. In general those games had great sound design — the music dropping out and the sound of rainfall coming in for a few seconds before the boss music at the end of the first stage of SoR2 always was a perfect mood-setter.

Streets of Rage 2… just reading the title makes a flood of fond memories rush through my head.
It was one of those games that defied genre barriers. It didn’t matter whether you were a sports gamer, an adventure lover, or an RPG fanatic — Streets of Rage 2 was for you. Maybe it was the music, or maybe it was just that this game was what Double Dragon should have been (minus the poor attempt at a cartoon). Regardless, it was a game to take pride in when you beat it – the first, second, or third time.
Then there was the inevitable fourth time – the time that could have been for me. The days in the college dorm room when someone would say they were playing Streets of Rage 2 on their computer, through a system emulator. Admittedly, I wanted to get the emulator too, but fear of a virus crashing my unstable Windows NT Service Pack 6 OS made me resist. School and a degree was more important than the temptation to return to the games of my past.
Now, that I can game at my leisure without fear of being slapped in the face with a fat F, I’m thrilled to learn that SoR2 will be in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. Beware bosses and mid-bosses and everyday street thugs… I’m coming for you.

If Sega does get around to doing a new Streets of Rage game, make sure Yuzo Koshiro is around to do the music again! I love the recent stuff he’s done in Etrian Odyssey 1+2 and 7th Dragon, but more Yuzo-techno would be nice too, haha.

Clumsy, is there any confirmation to whether the Sonic and knuckles lock on technology that allowed knuckles to be played in sonic 2, and 3 since those were unlockables in the previous sonic mega collection games but no confirmation for this ultimate genesis collection, can you add some spotlight.

Streets of Rage is way overdue for a new installment. If Sega wanted to actually give back to their Streets of Rage fans, they could do a new Streets of Rage game graphically done like Capcom’s Street Fighter IV or SNK’s King of Fighters XII. Keep the engine the same, simple and fun.
As far as the music goes in that new Streets of Rage game, you could have remixes and originals that sound like the YM2612 FM chip found in the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis, just with modern samples and/or instruments.
Streets of Rage is getting very popular again and is generating a new fan base. I believe a new Streets of Rage game is on a lot of people’s list for most wanted games.
