We’ve noticed some common issues as people begin to install and play Empire: Total War. The helpful folks in our customer service department have just published a new knowledge base article with answers and tips to help you along.
1) Nvidia Drivers.
a. After the game was finished, Nvidia released a new set of drivers which we were unable to test before release. Unfortunately this has caused some incompatibilities with the game. We recommend that you roll back to the previous drivers until this is resolved (located here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_182.06_whql.html)
2) STEAM installation issues
a. There are a couple of known issues with STEAM that occur when the servers get very busy.
i. Sometimes downloads will pause whilst downloading from the STEAM servers, the download should eventually restart. However you can force restart the download by selecting pause and then restarting the download using the right mouse button and selecting the appropriate option.
ii. After STEAM downloads the game, sometimes the game cache doesn’t update. In such circumstances, simply quit and restart the STEAM client. This restarts the process and allows the installation to complete.
iii. After a complete installation, sometimes the activation will fail due to the servers being very busy. Usually waiting 5 minutes and trying again solves this issue. If that doesn’t work please close STEAM and restart the client.
iv. Despite having a boxed version, Steam appears to be downloading the whole game. Answer to this here on Customer Services http://help.sega.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=516&nav=0,6,165
STEAM have identified a fix that will correct the majority of problems here that will be implemented ASAP today. In the meantime quitting and restarting STEAM is the best way to resolve these issues.
3) FAT32 (Portable Hard Drive/Old Hard Drive)
a. Due to the large size of the game, FAT32 will not work with the title. You are unlikely to have a FAT32 drive unless you have an old hard disk which you have installed STEAM to, or are using a portable drive. You can fix this problem by converting the hard drive by using any partition tool such as Partition Magic or the Microsoft Tool found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881. We recommend backing up any data on your hard disc before using any partition tool.
Hopefully this answers your questions. If not, you can post your query to the Empire: Total War forums or contact SEGA customer service directly.

I also have all of the requirements for the game, but as I am downloading the game it will not complete the download, it is stuck on “download starting” at about 93% complete. When I attempt to launch the game it says, “the game is currently unavailable. Please try again at another time”. I have tried restarting steam, pausing and restarting the download, and I even rebooted my computer. None of this has worked. I have also re-insterted the disc to prompt the installation sequence again, it gives me the option of reinstalling the game, giving me the impression it is already installed, however at the completion of this reinstallation, I returned to the same “the game is currently unavailable” message when attempting to launch, and the status of the download in Steam still says “dowland starting”. What can I do to fix this?

All requirements meet. Program run great till starting a game. Screen freezes, but narration works fine. Did I waste my money on this game?

It took me over 12 hours to download the game. Once I’d done so, I started it up and found that unit textures in the 3D battles portion of the game were missing for some models. They’d just appear to be black. Checking on various forums, I found that the consensus was that some of the files were corrupted during download. I used the “verify file integrity” option on Steam but the feature didn’t tell me if my files were corrupted or not.
I ran ETW again and noticed that the textures were still missing. Not wanting to waste another 12 hours of downloading (not to mention my monthly bandwidth limit. Yes, my ISP is one of those evil ones that puts a monthly cap on bandwidth), I tried altering various graphics settings via Catalyst Contol Panel.
I attempted to start ETW again, but was informed that Steam was installing an update.
It took about 2 hours for it to reach 100%, but then it just sat there, still displaying a download rate of ~300 Kb/S. I left it for over an hour but nothing changed. It read 100% downloaded, but indicated that it was still downloading. Again, I hopped on the forums and found that there was some sort of error with the % indicator. The size of the update was 1161 MB and that I should open the Steam bandwidth usage feature and check the amount downloaded. I did so and saw that I’d downloaded about 600MB.
I was somewhat annoyed with the amount of downloading required to install this game, but I left it running while I did other things. I came back about an hour later, hoping it’d be done only to discover that it was stuck at 819MB and the download rate was 0Kb/S.
I shut down all my other connections (not that there was much to close down. Just two webpages highlighting the problems others were having with ETW) and let it sit some more. After another hour, not one KB of data had been downloaded. Reluctantly, I decided to switch to another regional Steam server.
I switched to the Japanese servers, it being about 4am there when I did so, and restarted Steam. As I’d feared, the download process started over again at 0%. My hopes for a speedier download from the less trafficked Japanese servers weren’t realized and I was only able to download at 15-25 Kb/S. I gave up and went to bed.
8 hours later, the damned thing still hadn’t downloaded and was stuck at 650MB.
Why on earth did you force your customers to utilize this ridiculous service when pirates had the game cracked and uploaded hours after the initial release? What’s the point?
I, a paying customer, am still unable to get the game up and running after 2 days thanks to this “service”.

What a joke. I spend my $50 to buy this, when I install it, it tries to install from the internet. With a dial up connection it will take 8 days to install. Yeah, sure I’ve got nothing else to do. I spoent the money for the disks but here I am trying to download over the internet. What is the point of this? Oh yeah, and the tech support is horrible. The fix that is here about delelting local content, oh yeah it doesn’t work for me, my steam account doesn’t let me delete “local game content”. What a waste of money, what happened to spending the money for the disk and having the game actually work. Yes, my system more than exceeds the expects.

Tristan,
I’ll but the published fix for this below, but it seems like you’ve already tried it. If that’s the case, please file a ticket with our customer service department at http://help.sega.com and they will help you with the issue.
If you have the boxed retail version of Empire Total War and it is trying to download the full game via Steam, please follow the instructions below:
1. Launch STEAM and click the ‘My Game’ Tab.
2. Right click on Empire: Total War and click ‘Delete local content’. The non-installed information will appear next to the game.
3. Insert Disk 1 into your DVD drive and close Steam (File, Exit).
4. From the Windows Desktop, click on the Start Button, (XP) click Run (Vista) type Run into the Start Search box and choose Run from the list.
In the window Run box enter the following:
c:\program files\steam\steam.exe -install E:
- If your CD/DVD drive is not E: please change it accordingly.
- If Steam is not installed within c:\program files\steam, change the path accordingly.
5. Press OK, Steam should now start the installation from the Disk 1 and will ask for Disk 2 a bit later on.
6. At the end of the installation process, Steam will connect on Internet to download a small update which should take no more than few minutes.

It won’t let me install to anywhere but the C drive (which I can’t). I’ve tried the Sega instructions to rectify this and it doesn’t work – just continues to tell me I haven’t enough space. If I’d known this was the case I wouldn’t have bought it. My system meets all the other advertised specs. I’ve been a loyal TW fan throughout the series but what a fiasco – £25 paid legally for a game I can’t install and can’t even sell on.

hello there,
I was waiting for over a year and a half for this game, and when I installed it, all was going well until the loading screen. The golden bar would load around half way, and then start doing this glitch thing where it would flash back and forth and back forth in the middle of the bar. I could hear the sounds of the battle in the backround, but I couldn’t see anything. Also, when I minimized the game (because that’s the only way I could exit), I was about to close it, but I decided to maximize it again to see what would happen. The screen would flash violently black and white, like the kind you would get a seizure at.
hope someone can give me an answer on what’s going on. thx.

I am also a disappointed long time Total War fan. Really looked forward to this one. I experienced and nunber of system hangs at end of turns. Untill finally reaching 1792 where the game just CTD when you press end of turn. I tried going back to previous saves and attempted multiple adjustments to moves only to find same thing happens not matter what i do. GUTTED. The Naval units appear to be the main culprit, I have had multiple CTDs when clicking on fleets. Also I notice once you have clicked a Naval unit you cannot scroll across the map as easily, becomes choppy and non responsive for quite some time. Oh and I agree with the other comments about STEAM. Steam should be optional not a requirement. I really dont like having programs running on my PC for no reason. Anyways RANT over …please fix what will be an awsome game asap

New patch today crashed my game at the end of the turn. This is heartbreaking, for the sun never sets on my empire. I thinks its the new econ nerf, I was rolling in the dough. Basically, conquer your rivals main city, then conquer the smaller ones, give the regions back at a huge cost of tech/$$, and important..MAKE them trade with you. Its what the English did in real life (Sino-British Opium War).

I love total war, spent probably hundreds of hours playing rome and medieval.
My family barely has the money for empire but i think “, it’s worth it for all the time i’m sure i’ll enjoy playing it”.
I bought it 4 days ago, and i still haven’t got to play.
I have dial-up, so i had to leave my computer on and internet on day and night to download whatever steam needed me to.
i finally get to the game.
i try to play the road to independence, and despite having all the system requirements, the loading bar gets to 3/4ths completed and my computer shuts down.
I try that about 4 more times turning off more and more other processes on my computer until there’s nothing else going on.
and it still doesn’t work and my computer restarts.
I try to do the grand campaign, 3/4ths and my computer shuts off.
Needless to say, I am PISSED.
Most of all, i don’t see why the hell i need to be online to play empire, why i need to be forced to download updates, when all i want is to play the game i spent 50 dollars (that i barely have) on.

The game seems to install ok. But when starting up it hangs for one minute, and the machine reboots. Happening every time. I just see the initial SEGA-window and a timeglass. Maybe there is a video trying to get launched that causes the reboot? No messages before rebootiing. XP Pro, ATI Radeon 9600, no problems with other games. Have tried different radeon-drivers. DX9 works fine. Reinstalled the whole game but no difference.

Purchased last night. Spent hours and hours trying to get this to work. Total War Rome was incredible. To be honest this is ridiculous. Sega and especially Steam should hang their heads in shame over the garbage they call an installation platform. PC game that *requires* an internet connection to install?????? wtf are you all idiots? I live in upstate ny and have no option but dial up here. So in order to play this thing I have to spend days downloading however big the patch is. If I could even get the download to start I would be somewhat happy but the morons that are steam can’t get that right. I can’t even get the actual download to start. I’ve installed both disks as prescribe but the update download will not even start.
Thanks for taking a game like Total War which has a great reputation and butchering it steam and Sega. I think ya’ll should look for jobs with the new government owned GM and Crysler. You’d fit right in there with the rest of the incompetent idiots.

Had problems installing from CD. Something to do with administrator permissions on windows 7. However after following the advance of comment 8, namely running the steam client while passing it the disc location, I’ve managed to install it. For those having trouble removing local content. Just right click the steam icon in the tray and then click games. If empire total war isn’t there then either you’re not logged in or you haven’t registered the game. If it is downloading you need to cancel the update before you can clear local data. Right click empire total war and click cancel update. Then all thats needed is to right click it again and this time delete local content. Follow comment 8 and the game should install from the disc normally.

They should keep it the old way just put the disk in a install it an play away. Instead of having like steam let alone a internet connection it’s a waste of time in my opinion. If you want to play online then create an online account for multiplayer play. But other than that leave internet an steam out of the games requirements. The way CA had it with the previous games was fine an i wish they’d go back to the old method save people alot of time and alot of money.

I have Empire Total War on Steam. My pc meets the requirements for this game. There is an exceptionally annoying problem and I am not very tech savvy, so I do not know how to solve it other than to restart my operating system.
After an hour or two, the in-game cursor glitches and when I exit the game, that glitch carries over, so to speak. So, now I have this cursor image glitch on my desktop and the entire cursor disappears when using other programs, such as Firefox. I at least need to know how to reset or debug my mouse cursor.
NOTE: I run windows 7. I do NOT have windows aero or cursor trails enabled. I use a touch-pad, NOT a mouse. My mouse software driver is up-to-date. I keep my processes at a minimum to minimize the possibility of potential problems. This has only happened with Empire Total War on Steam.

Thank you for confirming I will never buy another title from you. I have played all the previous Total War games no problem, but thanks to Steam it is taking me longer to load the game than it took to win the first Shogun game. Steam sucks, and forcing me to download a game that I bought in a store so I wouldn’t have to spend time and bandwidth downloading is suggesting to me that your think your customers aren’t worth the money they spend on you. Since you seem to want me to say this, I will say it: I won’t spend money on your games anymore. Thanks for ruining one of the best war simulation games that exists.
