Sonic and the Black Knight – The Producer Speaks! Thanks to ArchangelUK for coordinating this and posting it on the Sonic Blognik. I’m sure a lot of you are aware that over in Japan on the Sonic World Adventure website my colleagues at SOJ are discussing all sorts of things to do with the creation of the game on some developers blogs. Sadly these are in Japanese and my knowledge of Japanese currently consists of “konichiwa”, “bakayaru”, “kawaii” and “miso” – in fact they’ve been rather drowning with them presently but thats okay because we got an offer a while back from the director of the game himself Tetsu Katano of Sonic Team who asked if he could do a blog for us as he’d like to talk to you guys! Naturally I said yes – you really thought I’d say no? Come on! Anyway I laid out a couple of points people had been talking about (including Blaze’s theme) and invited Katano-san to say a few words. Which he has, please bare in mind as usual that this has gone via the translator and as such isn’t wholy “fluid” English but I’ve straightened out a few points for you. SONIC TEAM PRODUCER – TETSU KATANO I entered SEGA in 1993, and have been a long time SEGA user since SEGA MK3. My first title that I worked on in Sonic Team was NiGHTS, where I was making the A-Life system. I also worked on the Sonic 3D Blast special stage and Sonic JAM before I served as main programmer/ player programmer on Sonic Adventure.
Katano-san at the recent Japan event in London, After I moved to Sonic Team USA, the list goes on to Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Sonic Heroes, where I continued to work as main programmer and player programmer. The first project I worked on when I came back to Japan was Sonic and the Secret Rings on which I was technical programmer. So me and Sonic have been working together for more than 10 years… Though if truth be told, I didn’t like the look of the Mega Drive Sonic himself, because I thought he looked mean! Lol. But gradually I’ve come to adore this lovely character who’s a little bit cheeky but very expressive. If Naka-san is Sonic’s father and Ohshima-san’s his mother, I humbly regard myself as one of his older brothers. (AAUK’s note: No this does not mean Katano-san is Manic from Sonic Underground and yes lol was indeed put.) Sonic & The Black Knight
This time I was Producer slash Director. It was around this time when we finally started to see the end of “Sonic and the Secret Rings” after a sequence of sleepless nights that my boss came up to me and casually dropped on me the newss that it would be up to me to think of an idea for “the next one (in the Storybook series)“. After much struggle that gave me both pain and joy, I finally decided to throw Sonic into a world of sword and magic. I confess that I’ve always wanted to see Sonic holding a sword. I also wanted to see Knuckles or Shadow, the usual suspects, back as strong foes, not just as side characters. This is how the plot of “Sonic and the Black Knight” came into a shape.
Perhaps most challenging was to make Sonic have a sword. I had to hold on to the Sonicness. If he loses that as a result of having sword, then it would be preposterous. I sought advice from many people about this. My favourite bit would be when everyone in Sonic Team started to see the great game that this was becoming. I am proud of this game and I will be most happy if users will enjoy this game too. Not to mention Sonic’s sword, actually this game has a big shift in its main attitude. Normally Sonic is about collecting rings and speed dash to the goal. But this time these are not the only objectives in the game. Of course it’s exhilarating if you can reach the goal fast, but in this game, every other cool action is taken into account in the scoring. Blaze’s Music… That was a frequent topic of discussions with my sound director (Jun Senoue), for this game, and for her we prepared a special tune and since she’s a flame master, it has to be a burning hot tune… Actually, with one of the accessories the user can change the music that plays during game. You will hear familiar songs that some of you might be already talking about. I love Sonic as a series very much. I gave everything I had to make the cool Sonic that we love. And so did my team. I’m sure you will like this game too! We’d like to thank Katano-san for taking the time out of his bust schedule to write for us.

Sorry, but a little bit late to observe this, methinks.
Piece of advice for Mr. Katano: I realize the corporate climate there is rough like sandpaper, but simple unrestrained fantasies don’t always make the wisest concepts.

Sorry, Mr. Katano, but you and your team have failed again.
In fact, I’m angry (and I will try to be really polite now) because I’m sick of these mediocre-but-not-that-bad-at-all titles that have been released lately.
Sonic deserves better games. Can someone at Sega understand that?

SEGA, I would like to ask all of you…WHY ARE YOU SO PERSISTANT ON CHANGING SONIC’S ORIGINAL GAMEPLAY? As a fan of the Sonic character must NOT a fan of these new trend of recent games with the name of sonic including the latest BLACK KNIGHT, I have to say that I couldn’t have been more disappointed with all of you as a company for trying to so wrongfully changing a character distint signature adding such a horrible gameplay and camera angles plus incredibly bad english voice acting…
Im not asking to come back with a 2D sonic title, because I know a good 3D Sonic could be developed properly, but at least hear what the fans are requesting.

Wow…another awful Sonic game. Couldn’t you have just stuck with the formula from the last Sonic Wii game? That was pretty good and well reviewed.
Quit trying to shoe-horn other ideas into Sonic. If you want to make a game about Knights and swords, do that. Don’t marry your game concepts to a character that has absolutely no place in the game.

This may not look like a great concept to critics, but I love this game as a Sonic fan. Thanks Katano-san.

Well, I just want to say that I really enjoy the Sonic games so far.Yes, I’m sure everyone is used to the original platform style that Sonic started out with. Many people wonder why producers would give Sonic a sword or whatever. Well I think that this broadens the spectrum for Sonic lovers around the world. <yself being a devoted Sonic fan, I can understand the where the producers are coming from in creating these newer versions of the speedy guy. Honestly, it’s a bit of a risk in the gaming world and could amount to a profit suicide, but in effect, I think that it’s a great way to market the product. The Storybook series is a great way to get consumers hooked on Sonic (personally, I enjoy the illustrations in Sonic and the Secret Rings) as it progresses throughout the series. The modernized graphics certainly do aid the marketing of the game. You know, the more detail, the better. I have yet to buy or play Sonic and the Dark Knight, but honestly, I’m looking forward to it. Katano-San, thank you for your ideas and the progress you’ve made in the gaming world. Please keep up the excellent work!

While I have not played Sonic and the Black Knight eventually I will. And it will probably be later this year when it hits the bargin bin used. Nothing about it reaches out and makes me want to spend $50 on it.
When I imagined this game (when very little of it got out) I saw either a potential Zelda or Kingdom Hearts clone with Wii remote controls and possibly accurate sword slashing. If that was the case this might have been good.

well, i like the new game thats coming out but… are the problems that most of the sonic fan population that have experinced in the past fixed? for example: the lack of control at super fast speeds or with the homing attack; i read an article the other day that sonic should “die” by Yuji Naka, a former worker for Sega. well, i disagree with him, i think instead of trying to let sonic die i say that the Sega team needs to work harder on fixing the controls of the games to come; and better story plots so that it isn’t just about magic and all that junk. don’t get me wrong, i’v played all the games that have been released and they were good; i think that they can be better with proper control over the character.

i heard people are still debaiting on a new sonic game for his storybook series he already been in the arabian deserts to the fields of camelot. the choices was many from mythologies to western and scifi. me personally would like a horror twist like “Sonic Meets Mr. Hyde” or “Sonic and the Headless Horsemen of Sleepy Hollow”. after all we seen him verse robots, dinosaurs, aliens, knights, genies, and eggman constantly! This would be a walk in a park for sonic. i bet frankinstien or better yet dracula wouldnt be able to stop him (infact i’d love to see them all try to take on sonic). He will go through a horror story as fast as he go through chilli dogs! Fast, easy, and with a smile!
