Valkyria Chronicles sales jump in the US, tops charts in JapanValkyria sales are often spoken of in the same sentence as “unfortunate” and “should have been better” – so when news arrives that would actually put the words “Valkyria Chronicles” and “chart topping” together, I figured you guys might want to hear about it. According to this Gamasutra report, last week Valkyria Chronicles made quite a comeback, both in Japan and here in North America. Looks like all that evangelical work from the hardcore fans, coupled with the DLC and recent buzz about the game, is boosting Valkyria back up where it should be. In North America, Valkyria Chronicles jumped last week to top 5 among PS3 game sales, back on the list at #5, and behind only titles like Guitar Hero and Killzone 2. Considering the game came out last November, it’s an excellent sign that DLC, continued support from SEGA, and amazing support from all the Valkyria fans truly can have a great effect on game sales. Props to all you evangelists who are telling your friends and fellow PS3 owners to pick it up – you have made a difference! The biggest success story, however, is in Japan – at a cheaper budget price for their re-heat of the title, it makes me extremely happy to announce that according to the Gamasutra info, Valkyria Chronicles was the highest selling game on amazon – period – in Japan last week, beating out the likes of Resident Evil 5 (Biohazard in Japan) and other blockbusters, and nestling in nicely on the same top 5 list as Yakuza 3, which ranked fifth. (Nice work to our counterparts in Japan!) It’s good to finally see some great news for a game that truly deserves it. Here’s to hoping the game continues to see increased sales and support across the globe – thanks again to all of you in the community who help spread the word!

If any game deserves more sales on the PS3, Valkyria Chronicles is that game.
Truly worth every penny.

Now that it’s a top seller on a PS3, bring it back to the original console it was announced for: Xbox 360. And watch the sales for even higher.

“work from the hardcore fans, coupled with the DLC and recent buzz about the game”
Or… It’s simply because of the anime that premiered 3 weeks ago and through fansubs made even americans and europeans go out and buy it. Where’s your precious “PIRACY HURTS SALES” argument now?

BME – The anime is definitely a factor too, I think a lot of things are coming together to help the game. I’ve actually been a proponent of the anime too, though officially there are limits to what I can condone. Still, we have also been supporting the anime, even though there’s no news about a US release yet:

Wonderful, maybe now we can see that possible sequel in North America. Also any plans to sell the art book alone, because I doubt I’ll win any the contests sadly.

Grats Sega. Also, thanks to Ruby for recognizing us fans who’ve been evangelizing and loving VC since day one.
I bought this game the day it released and it’s quickly become my favorite RPG of all time, and my favorite game since Skies of Arcadia and Jet Grind Radio.
Also, Ruby… put in a word about Outrun on PSN in the US, will ya? Jeez.

This is a fantastic example of what games will do on the PS3. Sales of other RPGs on the 360 cannot match this. IE Tales of Vesperia.
this is fantastic. Sega, keep supporting the hard core console the PS3!
Do not develop casual games for the 360, keep the PS3.
You are loved, I bought 2 copies!

As far as I know, I don’t think the Gamestop sales were actually included in this report (Gamasutra lists Amazon as the primary source.) I’ve seen a ton of people saying they got the game via the game day sales though, so I’d imagine the numbers might be even higher with those factored in.

A Trophy Patch would be GREAT~! for this game. Being someone who does not play a lot of RTS/RPG hybrid style titles, Trophies might help the uneducated (like me) play this game better by giving us a “compass point” to shoot for.
I also picked up this game at Gamestop during the “Game Days” sale. For $30, this was a worthy purchase, and I am glad to help out the studio that gave me Skies Of Arcadia on the Dreamcast and Gamecube (still play this one in my Wii on occassion!).
PS3 – One of the few times you will see this console leading the statement…

I’m not going to lie, Gamestops sale definitely got me to move this game up on my priority list and I’m glad because I love this game even though I hate Gamestop with a passion. I bought the game new btw when it was 50% off.
The one thing I hope though is that this recent success prompts Sega to take a chance on bringing Rya Ga Gotoku 3(Yakuza 3) outside of Japan as I would be as excited for if not more excited for a Northa American release of Yakuza 3 than I am God of War III which is the game I’m anticipating most right now.
I think pricing and timing releases needs to be assessed better, not just by Sega but by all publishers. I mean Valkyria Chronicles came out at the worst time possible right next to Fable 2/Fallout 3/Resistance 2/Call of Duty World at War. Had it been released during January when there was literally no competition and had it been released for $40 or $50 instead of $60 I think it would have enjoyed better sales. Combine with a bit better PR say a January cover story on Game Informer timed so that Game Informer with the review hit one week before the game came out then have 3 weeks on the shelf displayed in the front of the game with a massive display behind the counter of the product I think the game would have been a huge success. The magazine cover would have been perfect marketing for the release along with the critical acclaim of being a game with an 8.5 out of 10 AND being the only hot new release for the month.
Alright I’m through ragging on Sega PR, I’ll close by saying I’m on chapter 10 of the game and I love the Shocktrooper so very much, it’s a great game now just give us a North American Yakuza 3 release.

Currentlyowning three copies of the game, back when it first launched in the U.S., a UK copy and a new one today thanks to Gamestop. I’d be happy to buy the game again if need be. And I can’t wait to download the current DLC. Whenever I get the chance I make sure share my opinion with my other PS3 friends about the game and they all seem to be opening up to it. The anime is great aswell for a fan such as myself. Please bring more DLC!

I’m really happy to hear that VC is getting the recognition it deserves. I guess I can forgive Sega for not advertising this game as much. Now a prequel/sequel seems a lot more likely!
Also, more VC merchandise please! I want to see an awesome Welkin PVC that’s painted to look like it game from the game! I would pay a lot of money for something like this!

Yes because the 360 doesn’t already have enough games to merit owning the system. Sigh… people complain about not wanting to pay $500 just to play one game (FFXIII pre multiplatform announcement) and then when the PS3 starts getting exclusives they cry about wanting them on the system they have(MGS4 on 360 anyone?)
You know what? NO you can’t have it, no more post release porting. I’m ending that here and now
On a serious note there are plenty of reasons to own a PS3. Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, Little Big Planet, Kill Zone 2, Resistance FOM and Resistance 2, Warhawk, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Ratchet & Clank Future, Wipeout HD, Pixel Junk Eden, Pixel Junk Monsters, Flower, Every Day Shooter, Echochrome… On top of all thse the upcoming lineup is looking really solid for the next year God of War 3, FFXIII possibly Gran Turismo V. Oh if you’re into baseball, MLB 09 The Show is WAAAAAAY better than MLB 2K9 checkout youtube on 2k9 for proof. Then a few new digital games, Fat Princess and Trine both will be AMAZING.

This game would’ve sold even more poorly if released on 360 a lot of RPGs would’ve sold much better on PS3.
Mistwalker is probably going to go out of business for how stupid they are.
PS3 is the console you want to release these games on PS3 just sold 60,000 units this last week because of a FF13 demo.A demo.
Tales Of Vesperia,Infinite Undiscovery,Star Ocean 4,Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey all those games would have sold very well in Japan on PS3.
Instead of meh average and poorly.
Is Microsoft worried for USA sales? Most RPGs only sell about 100,000+ if that unless its Final Fantasy.
So they want 100,000 more units sold their that desperate huh?
Japan doesn’t want the 360 and in Japan people only want to buy 1 console period.
Now there are some hardcore RPG gamers in Japan that did buy a 360.
But most people just want it on PS3 or not at all.
All the RPGs on 360 would’ve sold 2-5 times as much on PS3.

Those games sold poorly because they’re mediocre games.. period. I guarantee they sold well at clearance prices, as people will purchase a game at the price they consider the same as the “value” they place on it. Increasing the user base exposure for this game would’ve helped, but the poor marketing support is partly to blame.
Sega, you’ve given us some great games, but someone in your marketing department is a moron. If you would’ve put half the marketing budget on this as you had with that Mario & Sonic game for the Wii.. with the small library of great games on the PS3, it would have flown off the shelves. VC seriously reminds me of Chrono Trigger when it came stateside on the SNES, it’s picking up steam purely by word of mouth. So is the anime, which would fare very nicely in the overall picture of things if you translated it and brought it over here. You’re losing TONS of dough on us fans scouring the internet to stream it with fan translations, so there’s obviously a market that you’re missing out on.
In this economy, people aren’t going to gamble on a poorly marketed new IP at full MSRP (although this game is worth every penny). Do the opposite of everything you’ve done in this business for the past 10 years.. word of mouth and quality DO go hand and hand, this is proof. If you were to sell Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force 3 (all scenarios), as spruced up marketplace/PS Store content. heck.. even publish a translated Radiant Silvergun if you can snag the rights.. you could afford all the mediocre Sonic games that you want! Or a Streets of Rage 4 16 bit! Make the games your fans really want, we want the real Sega back. Granted I’m probably the only one here that still wishes Chakan on Dreamcast wasn’t canceled, but still.
So give us a sequel that we want (VC 2), bring that anime over here, and hire a freaking common sense manager. Put your faith behind the good games like these, not the bad ones you have been for so long. Thanks for this game, it’s probably the best RPG I’ve played (in terms of quality and new ideas that work) since Chrono Trigger. That’s REALLY saying something.
