This week was Sonic the Hedgehog’s 18th birthday, and to celebrate we’ve been giving away codes for games from the Xbox Live Arcade SEGA Vintage Collection games all week on Twitter, Facebook, and the official SEGA forums. These Vintage Collection games are complete with their own achievements, as well as updated HD graphics and, for select games, multiplayer support over Xbox Live Arcade as well as online leaderboards.

This is a side-scrolling brawler with a neat meta-twist, where you are a comic book artist trapped in his own comic book. You do battle panel-by-panel with your own creations, and the game has a very unique art style with a great soundtrack.

3. Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Everyone knows Sonic 3. What you might not yet have heard is that this version, from the Vintage Collection, will be “lock-on” compatible. That means that when Sonic & Knuckles comes out it will work with this version of Sonic 3, and you can then play as Knuckles in Sonic 3 — and if you have the Vintage Collection version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, you can play as Knuckles in that game, as well as have access to the special-stage game “Blue Sphere”.

4. Altered Beast (arcade version)

A stalwart of the SEGA arcade years. The game boasted the ability to turn into a unique mythical-type monster for each stage, and to engage in fisticuffs with storms of flying eyeballs, which is always a plus.

5. Shinobi (arcade version)

I grew up playing the Master System port of Shinobi, and it was an excellent game–the arcade version, though, still works as a perfect example of the side-scrolling action genre that gets nearly everything right. The music was fantastic, there was a wide variety of enemies with big creative bosses. Shinobi remains one of the highlights of SEGA’s arcade & console years.
