Calling all SEGA JRPG Fans – we’ve got a question for you! There are some games in SEGA’s history that resonate with the feel of what SEGA was in the early 90′s – and, as we’ve seen recently, still holds onto in some ways today. What started with great RPG’s like the original Phantasy Star and Shining Force only continued through the years (and hardware changes) – leading into games like the much-loved Skies of Arcadia and the recent, critically acclaimed Valkyria Chronicles. Today, we’d like to get your thoughts. SEGA is potentially going to be grouping together fans of our JRPG’s (like the games listed above), and we’d like to give said group a bit of identity. What’s in a name? Well – just about everything! If you had to pick something fairly short and sweet to speak to what SEGA’s best RPG’s are all about, what would it be? Right now, we’d like to get feedback on this name:
Does the term “Heroes” fit the bill and speak to all of our best Japanese RPG’s? We’re looking for a name that is short and sweet, general enough that it can apply to all our RPG’s, and still sounds about as awesome as a plate of hotcakes in the morning. So, what do you guys think? Drop us your comments here – let us know first what you think of SEGA Heroes, and afterwards feel free to swing by your own thoughts on potential names. Please make sure to get all your comments in by this Wednesday, so post away! Update 8/7/09: Feedback has been collected and sent on! Thanks very much for all the responses everyone!

I don’t think Sega Heroes works, it’s sounds to me like it’s more suited to the characters everyone associates with Sega like Sonic etc. I can’t think of any better ideas right now though.

Maybe something more like Sega Quest or Sega Epics? I think it needs to be something that makes obvious allusions to RPGs.

Sega Heroes sounds like more of a Sonic thing, thanks in part of the Sonic Heroes game. “Sagas of Sega”, “Sega Adventures” or even “Sega Pioneers” feel more appropriate to the more upbeat, adventurous spirit that tends to be present in the Sega RPGs.

Sega Heroes sounds like a name that caters to the people who are already die-hards.
Plus many of those die-hards would be turned off to the name, because it conjures up Sonic Heroes. Dang, I knew I missed a Sega blunder in a recent twitter post (cramming them all into 140 characters was hard).
Anyways, it doesn’t really convey what an RPG is or does to the average consumer. I don’t see it drawing in new people.
Sega Adventures, Sega Quests, something other than Heroes. But, really, Sega should leverage their own brand in reminding people, like American Car Companies, that they make good products (especially in markets where, like RPGs, they don’t get recognized as much as they should).

I’m ok with Heroes. but as NJ said it could be better suited to all around Sega characters. Finding a name that fits just the RPG guys is kinda hard. I was thinking about taking a page from the Marvel guys and calling it Sega Ultimates, but as I’m typing that out it doesn’t work as well outisde my head as I thought it would.
I really think so far Sega Heroes might be your best bets.
Sega Adventurers might be more appropriate but that name is longer and less palatable. If you do go with retro how about Retronauts. Heck you could go with something like Sega and the Retronauts.
Maybe I’m the only one who doesn’t associate the name Sega Heroes with Sonic Heroes but I’m just gonna throw that out there.

Why Heroes? That is so generic it can mean possibly any genre. Why not come up with a name that will make you think of an RPG and not a Sonic game that many people do not like.
For example:
Tales of Sega
Sega Legends
Phans of Phantasy

Heroes.. no. overused and if I had to pick a “Sega Hero” it’d be sonic or nights long before we reached a jrpg character. Hero is a term way too lightly tossed around to be associated with games the like of Valkyria Chronicles, Phantasy Star or Resonance of Fate.
Rpgs, and Jrpgs in particular, are a unique experience to every player; granting them with the ability to experience another life. Many such games seem to have the goal of forcing the player to look at a scenario with new eyes, often utilizing a different perspective to challenge the player’s accepted world view. Rpgs are becoming as well written as classical literature and the emotional impact that some such games have has become legendary.
Regardless of the game remaining imaginary, emotions are very much real. Good games realize this, so that for the briefest of moments you’re making decisions that you would never make in a real life situation and you feel the weight of them. you get lost in a vision.
SEGA Visions, ftw.

Heroes is terrible, sorry. legends too. These are generic-tastic no-thought marketing at it’s prime. May as well be “Sega Blast” if you’re not going to put any effort into it at all.
If you want something to invoke concepts relating to RPGs, there are better things to pick from. I sort of like “Sega Party” but it doesn’t really give the proper indications to outsiders. Squad might be better. Letsee if I can rattle off a few more:
Sega Arms
Sega Worlds (similar to the Stars mentioned above, only maybe a bit more broad)
Sega History (see also Vault, Stories, etc. That’s more of a site name than group name however. And I think that’s already a site anyway)
Sega Empire, Kingdom, etc
The ones mentioned so far that aren’t as obnoxiously effortless as Heroes would be Blades (maybe Swords for illiteration, see also Spears, Staves, etc), Quest (perhaps Journey?), and DEFINITELY Sega Ages, since that’s a classic Sega line that would trigger many things. Pioneers isn’t too bad either.
Ultimately if you just provide a decent place for this sort of community the users will name themselves.

I am reposting just to clarify my previous suggestion. My apologies.
“Sega Vanguards” is my suggestion.
Sega Heroes is too close to Sonic Heroes.
Just in case why people wonder why I chose “vanguard”:
“Definitions of vanguard on the Web:
the leading units moving at the head of an army
avant-garde: any creative group active in the innovation and application of new concepts and techniques in a given field (especially in the arts)”
Since we are dealing with the protagonists of older classical rpgs I believe that term fits the bill, since they where in fact… the first ones to heed the call of adventure for many of us.

In my opinion “Sega Pioneers” “Sega Heroes”or “Sega Saga” will not work as an exclusive name for JRPG gamers. As those names imply that it’s fitted for Sega veterans, Sega long time gamers, and newer Sega gamers as well.
If I were to name and group all of the JRPG gamers together, it would be something along the lines of “Phantasy Gamers”. Something creative, and that calls out to the Sega JRPG fanbase together.

I would either go with Sega Sanshiro (the man rocked with those ads in Japan back in the day) or Shining SEGA, a tribute to the long forgotten and awesome days of Shining Force
And, for the record, Sega Heroes seems more like a Sonic related thing (as many have said, and Heroes is overly used already) then a real, catchy name for the fans.
PS: SEGA Arcadia doesn´t sound too bad aswell, (Arcade fans and Skies of Arcadia in one

I’d fully support Sega Adventurers or Sega Legends over Heroes. I’m almost inclined to call it The Missing Links, as there are so many Sega JRPGs that never will see the light of day here from Sega of America. Bring over Valkyria Chronicles 2 and Shining Force Feather and I might forgive the lack of Shining Force III Scenario 2 & 3 back in the day. Oh and how could you forget the classic Sega RPG Panzer Dragoon Saga?

It seems like you’re about to take a number of well liked properties and roll them up into a production that was once left only to imaginations greater than those of their creators: their respective fanbases.

I’m still not quite sure what to make of this topic.
The term “Sega Heroes” sounds great from a comic book perspective.
But when you look at it, Ethan Weber is a hero and so is Vyse, so is Welkin Gunther. All of them something young men aspiring to become legends. So maybe Sega Legends would be a little too much, since Valkyria Chronicles, Sands of Destruction, Phantasy Star Universe and Resonance of Fate are still newcomers.
So Sega Stars is a great one…
But I can’t think of something a little more complete… Sega Universe.
It fits into everything: games, comic book and novel tie-ins.
It’s the broadest term I can think of…
If nothing else, Sega Heroes is fine too.

I’m going to use my literary degree here and suggest a few ideas…Sega Sagas is too much of a tongue twister – it is messy and slippery due to the alliteration. This is quite the opposite from Sega Ages…which was a brilliant moment of word play.
Sega Heroes….comes across very much like Sonic Heroes…a brand that has been much maligned by the hardcore community who want a 2D Sonic…so I’d stay away from that.
Here are some ideas:
1. Sega Legends or Legends of Sega- To the point, they are legendary titles
2. Sega Chronicles – Sweet and clean, detailing the adventures and highlights Valkyria and the storybook aspect of the titles mentioned.
3. Sega Myths – This one works for the older titles…but I prefer the two up above.
4. Sega Taisaku – Go Japanese…afterall, they are JRPGS. Show it off proud and strong.
5. Sega Arcadia – It sounds nice but the meaning is unclear
7. Sega Fables – It comes to close to the recently released Fable games and the Vertigo Comic series
8. Sega Tales – though it seems to close to the “tales” series by Namco
9. Sega Stories – nicer alliteration but doesn’t seem not epic enough
10. Sega Lore – Cool, but awkward
11. Sega Muses – The stories inspire creativity
Other ideas I had included words like Valor, Reverie, and Dream.

I agree with the masses that Heroes just invokes thoughts of Sonic. So far Sega Legends has been the one to jump out and grab me the most. Sega: Cast of Dreams is certainly unique and doesn’t feel as generic as Legends, but it is a bit more of a mouthful. Those are my two suggestions, and I would say definitely not Heroes.

Not everyone is a fan of those games, though. I’ve got some more suggestions, and I’d like to have some feedback on it, if I may. Keep in mind that they’re looking for the name of a group of people, not just a brand name or a column or anything like that. Most of the names so far, I guess including a couple of mine, don’t really fit what they’re looking for, so I’ll give another one that might fit. I’m going to try to combine everything I know of the SEGA RPGs.
SEGA Crusaders
SEGA LFG
I still like SEGA Guild, since there was a Hunter’s Guild in PS, the Sailor’s Guild in SoA, the Adventurers’ Society (a type of guild) in Grandia I, and I hear there’s a guild in Sands of Destruction. There are probably other instances of guilds in SEGA RPGs, but those are the ones that come to mind.

I’ll echo what’s been said before and say that Sega Heroes sounds a little too close to Sonic Heroes for comfort. Not that SH was necessarily good or bad, but it certainly wasn’t an RPG. Too many of these other suggestions sound more like odd FPS clan names than an RPG group.
Sega Guardians? While there is the PSU element, the term seems to fit most of Sega’s RPG catalog nicely without being too broad. Sega Protectors is another from the Phantasy Star lot, this time going back to IV, but that word, but out of context it might be a little too… overprotective-sounding, ironically. “Vanguard” is a bit too… militaristic. Which is fine for Valkyria Chronicles, I guess, but not so much Sega’s RPGs as a whole.
Sega Chronicles was suggested several times now, but we’re after the name of a group and not some odd books or anything, so how about Sega Chroniclers? I rather like that one. Let’s make that might top choice.
You know, it might or might not help to stick “RPG” in there somewhere too, just to make it extra clear what the group is all about. For example, “Sega RPG Heroes” sounds a lot better than just plain old “Sega Heroes”.

I think PHANTASY is a true SEGA term that screams RPG and the adventures and stories that have been told (and played). Besides, Phantasy Star and ALIS started it all !

Knux, I think it’s because when people talk about the SEGA group (I’d go with Guild or RPG Guild), they are able to specify what it is. When you just say “Guild” or “Legends”, then you don’t know what they’re referencing.

If Sega cared so much about RPGs and their fans they wouldn’t be skimping on english voice tracks for a certain upcoming game.
As for a good group name would Virtua Adventures? I always loved the Virtua “game” series. Its so very Sega-ish.

megamixer, that sounds more like the name of a fighter group, not a jRPG group specifically. Virtua Fighter has nothing to do with RPGs outside of Virtua Quest, and it’d be better if we all forgot about that one…

Since “Sega Vanguard” isnt appealing to some people, how about “Sega Masters”?
It should have a nostalgic effect to the older gamers that began their quest to gamedon with the Sega Master System, if Im not mistaken it is the same system where many of us began our Phantasy Star trek.

Whoops, little typo there. I meant to put “Virtua Adventurers”.
@Adam Reese
Virtua Cop, Fighter, Quest, Racing, Golf, Striker, etc. The Virtua moniker applied to all kinds of Sega games in the past… there’s no reason it couldn’t get in some RPG action imo.

I like “Blue Rogues”… It’s a reference to Skies of Arcadia (one of Sega’s best RPGs ever)… But also, Blue is… Sega’s color? and Rogue is a typical “class” or “type” in any RPG.

The name can be anything because I only want a new “classic” Phantasy Star and Shining Force, one time that there are two generations since I don’t see any new games of the two (no Sega, Phantasy Star Online/Universe and Shining XYZ for PS2 aren’t true games of the series).

My experience with Sega RPGs is limited to the “Phantasy Star” series and the classic “Shining Force” series. (I wish “Shenmue” counted. Does it?
) Both felt unique and special compared to its contemporaries. There was nothing else like them.
I’m not that great with making names, but I’d like to contribute some suggestions, too. But Sega, not “Heroes,” PLEASE! That’s WAAAAAY too generic, bland, uninteresting, clichéd, ordinary, and humdrum. What I’ve got aren’t much, but here they are:
Sega Legends
This is the first name I thought of. I recalled the stories of the “Phantasy Stars” and the “Shining Forces,” and the word “legend” came to mind.
Sega Pioneers
Before Square popularized science-fantasy RPG settings with “Final Fantasy VII,” Sega did it first—and better—with “Phantasy Star II.” (Also, Aeris totally ripped off Nei.) And when RPGs predominantly featured a male protagonist, Sega dared to star a girl, Alis Landale (Alisa Landeel), as the protagonist of the first “Phantasy Star.”
Sega Astrals
Granted, not all Sega RPGs involved stars or space. Interestingly, however, the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines “astral” as (4a) “visionary” and (4b) “elevated in station or position: exalted.”
Sega Visionaries
We Sega RPG fans are men and women of exceptional taste and discernment. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines the noun “visionary” as (3) “one having unusual foresight and imagination.” Logically, Sega Visionaries play visionary Sega RPGs.
Sega Chimeras
Normally, a chimera is a mythical beast and a staple RPG monster. However, according to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, “chimera” can also mean (2) “an illusion or fabrication of the mind; especially: an unrealizable dream.” Furthermore, the related word “chimerical” means (1) “existing only as the product of unchecked imagination: fantastically visionary or improbable.”
Goodness, these are starting to sound like sports-team names! XD

SEGA should make a crossover game of Shining Force and Phantasy Star
Shining Phantasy
The new king of Palmecia, Waizz Landale, raises an army with the goal of uniting all lands under one ruler. In the end the whole world would be united under the Palmecia name (shortened to Palma) while the Palmecia continent itself would then be referred to as Baya Malay.
There have already been interesting similarities between the two series. Dark Dragon having the same origins as Dark Falz, The dimensional seal of Dark Dragon/Profound Darkness, The map of Palma in Phantasy Star is very similar to the map of Palmecia in Shining Force 2. These games are asking for a crossover.

SEGA Vanguard. Shows how titles like Panzer Dragoon Saga, Skies of Arcadia, Valkyria Chronicles, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Blazing Heroes
, and the like are solidified as iconic titles, and they are sort of the caretakers of SEGA’s legacy, the ones people will remember because of how great and epic they were.

I really believe that “HEROS` is kinda too simple and most people would probably look at that and think Sonic related I think you should use something like
SEGA ARC
SEGA Chronicles
Just something that would have to do with a storyish type of name if you know what I mean and it needs to sound flashy ^_^!

And just to throw this in because I’m a crazy Phantasy Star Fan, I say bring Phantasy Star I, II, III and IV to 360. Please.
Whatever the name may be I still stick to your games.

I do like Sega Heroes if only because they already made a theme song for it. (Ok, it’s Sonic Heroes, but it does fit.) It still does describe the nature of what we play as when taking quests, in a typical Sega RPG. I could go with that.
Still, I think something appropriate would be something that pretty much says what we are. There’s quite a few of us who are big time Panzer Dragon Saga fans as well. So there’s a diverse amount of worlds in the Sega RPGs we’ve already played.
Something like: Sega RPG Force
Sega Knights also works, since one can associate that with folks ready to answer the call, instead of just insisting Knights in armor or something.
We could also have “The Sega Party” which sounds inclusive to even those of casual interest in RPGs with this “Why don’t you join?” style of name, and yet still attaches that long-termed “Party” association with RPGs.
“Sega Champions” could also work, and is generally an accepted synonym for Heroes. It also distances itself from “Sonic Heroes” by not looking the same.

Eternal Phantasies gets my vote
Which could be spelled “Fantasies” I suppose.
The name not only incorporates some of the more known sega JRPG titles, but it also works as a reminder that these games will always be remembered by the fans.

I like the names Sega Legends or Phantasy Legends. A new non-online Phantasy Star or just a deeper solo story tacked onto an online version would be awesome!!! Keep the “roguelike” random design though. I can’t wait till the English version of Phantasy Star Zero hits the States. I have been playing the Japanese version for months now and I love it! I will be buying a copy of that one too. Phantasy Star II still brings me to tears.

I will go with any name you give it, if you swear that you will finaly find a way to publish a GOOD remake of Shining Force I and II and finally bring ALL 3 parts of Shining Force III. Stop with the neo and exa stuff and give me back my SRPG! All in all a name like Heroes would work if you were doing a re-release of most of the classic RPG’s that we all love

SEGA Heroes sounds somewhat conflicting for a group that defines the fanbase of SEGA’s RPG franchises D: . Being a hardcore Phantasy Star fan (and fond of Skies of Arcadia), I wouldn’t really call myself a hero more than a proud witness of some of the greatest and most memorable experiences in video games SEGA has offered us to play.
However, taking back PSO’s (Phantasy Star Online) motto, “You are not the only hero”, I do understand the way the term is meant to take us to: a more convincing term is simply possible and recommended, however ^^; .
By my standards of a name that would describe their games as legends that stood out in their time and through time, that shaped the course of SEGA’s history and that of long-time players, that would differenciate gaming’s embassadors from today’s own, younger generation of heroes…uh…I’ll eventually end up thinking of a name >.> …

Hello, I am Belsheber Rusape, I am 14 years old, and I want to ask if you can create a new sonic the hedgehog game featuring the archie comics’ storyline featuring Scourge the Hedgehog, Fiona Fox, the Destructix, the Babylon Rogues(Jet is playable), and the new character named Nazo from Sonic X, and the fan cartoon Nazo Unleashed and the Return of Nazo like it was the same as Sonic Generations, and all new features. Also characters like Nights, Alex Kidd, and the other Sega characters can be in a Party mode with one of the multi-player and the story had 2 player is it. I hope you guys can make a copy from Christmas to the end of December.

Hello, I am Belsheber Rusape, I am 14 years old, and I suggest that in the upcoming game called Sonic Dimensions should have 2-player feature in the story, all of the friends from Sonic Colors, including Omega and Big, should be playable in party games, and part of the story, and do their roles in Sonic Generations. Also, the multi-colored personality sonics should have the following techniques and traits; Red,rage and courage, should have fire, explosions, and super strength in his boosts and physical power; orange, pride and enthusiasm, should have power ups and strength from his stomps and homing attacks; Yellow, energetic, should activate electric shields and other electric powers; Green, Encouragement, should have the power of wood and winds; Blue sonic, the real one, has everything he already has; Purple, arrogant and funny, should have shrinking powers and flying. Also there should be the whole cast from Sonic&Sega Allstars Racing, including NIGHTS, Aiai, and Banjo with Kazooie. Sonic Dimensions is a perfect game if these features are added with the colorful sonics colorful auras and if the game is being sold in the US by November 7th 2012
