Sonic & Knuckles out on XBLA on September 9th!Let the locking-on begin! Sonic & Knuckles — sequel/counterpart to Sonic 3 for SEGA Genesis — is due out this September 9th for XBox Live Arcade. The best news? The game will emulate the “lock-on” technology available in the original. This means that it will work with previous XBLA releases of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3. Here’s how it works: If you have any of the previous XBLA Sonic games (1, 2, or 3) , Sonic and Knuckles will detect this and unlock additional options for play. Here’s what you can get: Sonic the Hedgehog: Unlocks the game “Blue Sphere”, the bonus/Chaos Emerald level from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 As for Sonic & Knuckles itself: I always found this to be the most intricate and most challenging of the Genesis-era Sonic games. The levels are intricately designed, Knuckles is a ton of fun to play with, and there’s a great deal of detail that went into the level design, where each zone feels like a seperate world you can get lost in for hours finding all the secrets & tricks. Knuckles also provides a unique playstyle, since instead of just spin-dashing, you’re climbing & gliding as well, which adds a really neat element to the traditional Sonic-style levels. A fitting end to the cycle of Sonic games on the Genesis, and it will be great to see the lock-on technology bringing it all together. Look for it on XBox Live Arcade this September 9th! | ||

Any chance of some extra achievements to go with that lock-on? Has no effect on my purchasing intentions at all, I just like achievements.

SEGA you’re killing me with all the SEGA games coming out for XBL. I love my XBL games and my account has all but one SEGA game which I will fix next week. Keep’em coming and much continued success. Peace #1 SEGA fan………………!

Awesome! Thank you guys so much for reviving the lock-on games! Sonic 3 Complete is legendary in my book, and many other books for that matter.

Is this being done by Backbone? Will they be including all the features of the game or will it be like Sonic 3 where you can’t do anything post-game. If you don’t get level select after finishing the game to play through as Hyper Sonic / Hyper Knuckles / Super Tails, this would be a really crappy port.

I hope we are getting the traditional saving system for Sonic 3 & Knuckles this time around.
I didn’t like what Backbone did with one of Sonic 3′s best features, (automatic saving/file select after completing the game) replacing it with manual saving/no file select. I would also like file select added as an update to Sonic 3 XBLA.

Agree with Graxer. I was incredibly disappointed that the traditional save file system was removed. This got rid of some great features from S3 such as Level Select and the ability to play as Super Sonic in any level once all achievements were collected.
Please dont make the same mistake for S3K!

Kudos to comment #10. It’s incredibly frustrating that the save menu was removed. There’s now no way to start a game over with all the chaos emeralds and play through that way, and it’s so fun to start a new game with all the emeralds and tear through it. Luckily I’ve still got a Genesis 2 with a Sega CD attached sitting under my TV so that I can do exactly that. Doesn’t look too hot on an HDTV though.

Will the lock-on technology be available if we bought “the Sega Megadrive Ultimate Collection” XBOX DVD ?

I also want to know what if anything this means for those who bought Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. Are you just saying “F you, fans!” and making us pay $20 to download four games just to have access to all the content in them when we already paid $30 for a collection that contained all the games and many more but did NOT have lock-on compatibility? Or is there a patch in the works we should know about?
