We’re going to Tokyo! SEGA @ TGS ’09!When I was younger, I used to dream of accomplishing at least a few big dreams in life – one of those, as the longtime blog readers here know, was working at SEGA. The second was one I’ve hoped for since Jr. High school, when I did two-day presentation on the country – and that dream was to one day go to Japan.
On Monday, that dream will become a reality as I board a plane bound for Tokyo and set off overseas. While there, I’m going to bringing you guys coverage from the Tokyo Game Show, a special visit to SEGA of Japan, and a daily journal about my travels. Whether you’re excited about our upcoming games like Valkyria Chronicles II or Phantasy Star Zero, the legacy behind classic SEGA games and arcades, or a mix of both like myself, you’ll be able to check back here every night (Tokyo time, that is) for new content exclusive to the SEGA Blogs! Ask your questions to developers!
It’s your chance to ask a question to teams like the one behind this gem of a game – don’t miss it! After TGS is over, I’ll be going to the SEGA of Japan offices to meet with some of their teams face to face – and that’s where you guys come in. Got a question you always wanted to ask a developer, but never had the chance? Send them my way, I’ll grab the best to include in my interview, and you might see your Q&A posted here on the blog! Post your questions over the weekend on this blog post, and let me know who you want to address it to. You can pose questions for:
So get to it! This is the first time ever that SEGA is offering our community front-row seats to both TGS and a special look at parts of our Japanese offices. We’re stoked to see it happen, and we hope you guys are just as excited to hear the news. Until Monday then – have a great weekend guys!

Here’s my question for the devs: What do they think of multiplayer support for Valkyria Chronicles? Have they considered this as an optional mode of play, in which each player takes turns moving their armies (just like normal play but a second player controls an army)?

To the Valkyria Chronicles I/II development team:
For VCII, why did you switch to a character design style akin to the Valkyria Chronicles anime instead of continuing to use or develop the original game’s more distinct and ‘subtle’ character design style?
For VCII, will it be possible to include multiple language voice tracks on the North American and European releases of the game?
And this isn’t a question, but, RubyEclipse, please try to communicate to the VC development team as much as possible that we want a new Skies of Arcadia, as well. Many of their members worked on that game, and Vyse, Aika, and Fina all had cameos in VC. I guess Rieko Kodama would need to be involved or they’d need her permission to do it, but no matter what, just please try to tell them how much the community wants a new Skies of Arcadia game.
And, if nothing else, please thank them for me for all the excellent work they’ve done over the years, including Valkyria Chronicles and Skies of Arcadia. I truly do love their work.

Resonance of Fate: How deep is the Clothing system in RoF? Are the clothing like equipment (stats base) or are they just for looks? Because I can imagine wearing a certain shirt for the stats and then a different Jean for the stats, but then again the Shirt might be Red and the Pants Green and it would look really bad.
Valkyria Chronicles: Would we ever have a Trophy Patch? I know you guys have worked on the latest DLC, a Trophy Patch should be that bad, unless it’s a really hard deal to program atm.

To SEGA WOW
Will the VC franchise stay on the PSP, will it come back to the PS3, or does it depend on VCII sales compared to VCI? Is VC2 going to have any kind of interactivity with the PS3?
Also, I wanted to reinforce ZeroAtma’s question about an online mode for VC, which would be wonderful. Definitely something worth paying for (DLC).
To Sonic Team
Are there any plans for the franchise (PS) to come to the PS3?
To Tri-Ace
Are both versions (Xbox 360 and PS3) of the game going to be exactly the same? How do you plan (if you do) to make use of the Bluray disc’s extra space? Is the game being developed simultaneously for both systems, or is the game development primarily focused on one of them and then ported to the other? If yes, which one?
To SEGA publishers (if possible)
Is Yakuza 3 coming to the western market? There’s a lot of hope from PS3 that the game will be localized (or at least that it will include multi-language settings), so it would be great if SEGA decided to talk about it.

I’ve got lots of questions for the makers of VC/VC2.
I want to know what the team has to say about the move from the sketchy, painterly aesthetic of the first game to a more traditional anime style for the sequel.
I also want to know what they have to say about the…more fanservice-y designs of the female characters (medic and the ??? Valkyria).
How much focus is there on school drama vs. focusing on the war?
What do they say to fans who are disappointed in the direction they’ve decided to take the series (both to the PSP, the school-focused story, and the change in character and art direction)?
Are there any chances of the series coming back to consoles where it can be appreciated in glorious HD and surround sound?

To the Valkyria Chronicles team:
Thank you for developing such an excellent game. Now my questions:
1. What was the intent of the Atlantic Federation? They appeared briefly in the story but we never got motivation that they were good or evil. Especially with the events in Chapter 9 (and its aftermath) I felt that the Federation subplot got sidelined.
2. I’m sure there are a lot of people asking but what are the chances of a trophy patch for the VC 1?
3. What are the chances of another console version (PS3 or 360 or even Wii) in the series being made?
4. If VC1 can be considered a love story set during a WWII environment, what should we consider VC2′s story?
5. In VC 2 can we expect cutscenes using an anime style or Canvas engine style?
6. Will the ranking system in VC2 be tweaked to not base the bulk of your rank on the speed in which you complete your mission? Ie. will tactics or clearing every enemy have a larger weight in your rank?
7. Will there be more opportunities to interact with non-story related squad members outside of missions?
8. Will the narrative of VC2 be as serious as VC1 or can we expect a slightly lighter tone?
9. Will VC ever go outside of Gallia and present storylines from the Empire or Federation?
10. Please focus on keeping the narrative of each character as strong as it was in VC1. Being able to slowly uncover the ‘book’ really helped to draw me into the world and understand its characters.
Thank you for your time and continue to create excellent games.

Tri-Ace: I’m really excited about Resonance of Fate, as it actually reminds me a little bit of Square-Enix’s Parasite Eve, mixed with off-the-wall acrobatics and gunplay. However, I am afraid that the gameplay will become boring and repetitive. Will the game’s difficulty scaling demand exp grinding out of the players, or will players be able to play the game in a more enjoyable, and perhaps strategic manner, with each battle being as entertaining as the last, instead of a series of trash monsters.
SEGA WOW: I was really skeptical when the first magazine scans of VCII surfaced on the internet, but having recently watched the two brief clips of the gameplay that were released online, they felt very much like Valkyria Chronicles, and for that I’m thankful. My question is: Are there any plans to release a (free) DLC pack or version update for VC1 of letting VC1 players take control of and play with the new VCII protagonist, like perhaps as a skin job, unique potentials, voice acting, and maybe even a non-canonical scenario through which you acquire him? I think it would be really cool if you guys made and released a (free) DLC pack, as a way to incentivize and thank people who didn’t sell their copy of Valkyria Chronicles, and for supporting the game, but more so to help spread awareness and appeal for VCII.
The DLC stories that have so far been released in the west have been taken with much appreciation and entertainment, mostly as they focus on characters that are part of your squad, and because they don’t normally get to stretch their legs as playable characters. Will there be more elaborate side story missions in VCII, beyond what was done in the VC1 main story where you got bonus chapters?

Question for Valkyria Chronicles. Would it be possible to get some trophies for this game? I’ve got the game but I would like the drive to play the game again if it had trophies. I’m of the personal belief that you would see an increase in sales and revenue if trophies where patched in. I know some people out there refuse to purchase the game because it doesn’t have trophies. Also if what i belive is true and ends up happening i belive it will send a message to other developers out there to patch in trophies for their older games.
Can I ask about Yakuza 3 and Yakuza Kenzan about being released in the West with english subtitles at least? Or patching them into the current Japanese version so i can import it? You would see profits being made from importers such as myself.

*Valkyria chronicles fans already own the the PS3 and they have enjoyed the game, however Valkyria Chronicles 2 will be released on the psp, since the game didn’t do massive sales on the PS3, the Fans would like to know the future of this franchise if it will return to console, if the psp version was a HUGE success why would you release the next game (Valkyria chronicles 3?) on the PS3 instead of the PSP?

My questions are for Sonic Team (PS)
¿What about real remakes of Phantasy Star classics (I to IV) in order to get them closer to the new generations of PS fans? NDS could be a very nice platform.
Could we wait a sequel of PS0 in Wii/PS3/Xbox360/PC or any platform that could provide a better online support than Nintendo WFC?
Thanks!! It would be great if you could ask these questions =)

There are tons of great Valkyria Questions here already…so I’ll dip into Resonance of Fate:
1. Why focus on guns? It seems like a very Western take on a Japanese styled game. It also seems like a rather large departure from Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, and Radiata Story. What was the thought behind that?
2. Now that they’ve built one next gen RPG (Infinite Undiscovery) how are they looking to push the bar with Resonance of Fate?
3. What engine is the game using? Self-developed or Unreal?
4. I have heard about clothing but what about weapons? Can they be upgraded or are there a variety to choose from?
5. Any chance of DLC?
Also, ask SEGA WOW about Skies of Arcadia title. That would be epic. Thanks so much guys!

4 questions for me:
1.Why did you choose the character design of the anime rather than the character design of the first game?Don’t you feel that this way VC will lose that character design which made it differentiate from the rest of the anime games?
2.Why did you choose the psp?And more importantly will we ever see a VC game on the ps3 again even if the psp version performs extremelly well?
3.Are there any chances that VC2 will be ported to the ps3?
4.Will we see future games being developed using the canvas engine?

It’s very apparent that Phantasy Star Zero is heavily influenced by the original Phantasy Star Online. However, I want to know, being the earliest game in series’ timeline, how much of the game was inspired by the older Phantasy Star games on the Sega Master System and Genesis?

I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS!
-(Segawow) Skies of Arcadia, infact let them know just how much the game is requested. I need another Skies of Arcadia! No, I need it to be a series!
-Ask them to please please consider bringing back the team names, like ‘Team Andromida’, ‘SmileBit’ and so on… With Sega no longer having recognisable team names for people to get behind they become to much of a big faceless corporation and harder for people to connect with… The RPG team which you are refering to as SEGA WOW don’t actually have a ‘name’ but they need one as does Nagoshi sans Yakuza team since they don’t use AV anymore.
-Will VC return to HD consoles?
-Will Phantasy Star return to HD consoles?
-Do you plan on turnning Resonance of Fate into a series?
-(Sega wow) Will you be using the Canvas Engine on non-Valkyria Chronicles games?
-Finally, RUBY… Rant and rave about the following games untill you’re blue in the face:
SHENMUE 3
YAKUZA 3
PANZER DRAGOON
SKIES OF ARCADIA
JET SET RADIO
SHINOBI
STREETS OF RAGE
CLASSIC SONIC IN 2D!

-How long does it take to fully complete the game?
-Who is writer for End of Eternity’s storyline? What was his inspirations for this title?
-Did you feel that your experience with SquareEnix(namely Infinite Undiscovery) helped in the making of this RPG?
-Sepaking of which, why did you decide to co-produce this game with Sega and not your traditional partner SquareEnix?
-What’s is the game’s random battle rate or do you pick the fights you want?
-How many discs will be included in the Xbox 360 version?

Sega WOW – I know tons of people say it but I guess too much is never enough. Valkyrica Chronicles trophy patch blah blah blah. If it’s about numbers, start a poll. “Would you like to see a trophy patch for VC?” – Yes, no, don’t care, it’d make me finally buy the game, etc. It’s one of my favorite games of all time and one of two games that I own that don’t have trophies.
Sega – How about DLC for Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection? I’m mainly aiming at the ability to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2 and 3.

+ You’ve mentioned previously that the decision to work outside Square-Enix for your first time stemmed from creativity and freedom allowed by Sega. Is this a decision to push you into other developers for the future ie will we be seeing more tri-Ace titles beneath other publishers in the future, or even self-publishing in Japan?
+ The game is clearly a refinement or evolution of Valkyrie Profile 2 concepts. While the game will no doubt feel similar, just how much new depth and new experiences will be found?
+ Why are you so awesome?
SEGA WOW:
+ If not a sequel to Valkyrie Chronicles, do you intend to use the canvas engine for any other Playstation 3 titles, or are the restraints in the engine inherently going to keep it as being useful to the strategy RPG genre?

Though stories from WOW and Overworks have always been unique and interesting, what compelled you to diverge from the typical JRPG trend of independent youngsters saving the world by themselves and instead focus on a tale of smaller scope involving people as agents of their government which was itself ensnared in a larger conflict? I appreciated the specific scope of Valkyria Chronicles since it allowed a slightly more nuanced examination of loss and life in warfare, and I was curious if there were any particular ideas or influences that led to that decision.

My questions for Sega WOW:
1) When are you guys going to make another Shinobi?
2) If you do make another Shinobi, would Hotsuma return?

If this is a PSP game only, Is there a chance it can be ported to the PSN so we PS3 gamers can download and play it? I mean is a win-win for me, not everybody is willing to buy a PSP to play a game, not even the sweet VC2. Also are there any more VC titles on the way especially for PS3 also trophies!! If you don’t do it after reading all this emails I don’t know if you ever will…

SEGA WOW: In developing Valkyria I and II, did you ever return to your famed Dreamcast title Eternal Arcadia (Skies) for inspiration or ideas?
What is it like transforming a PS3 game to the PSP format, while still keeping the same general formula and elements from the first?
General SEGA: What is Yu Suzuki doing?
Bring up the usual titles that everyone wants, Ruby: Shenmue III, JSR, PD, Fighters Megamix, anything that people want a sequel to.

Questions for Sonic Team:
* When did development of PZ0 begin? It seemed like this came out really quickly on the heels of Phantasy Star Portable, as well as all the content for PSU were they the same group of people working on all three?
* Is Sonic Team divided up into groups (like one group does console Sonic, one group does Phantasy Star, another group works on other IPs) I would like to know how much of Sonic Team works on each IP, do people bounce around on every project at the same time?
* What is their favorite new enemy in PZ0 and why? From either a creative, game play, or a sentimental aspect.
* Where did the idea for having a random encounter coliseum area come from? I really love the dream-like stairway to it and the coliseum itself really stands out from other areas in the game aesthetically. This is one of my favorite new additions to the game.
* The design and style of everything from enemies, locations, and weapons is really amazing, not to mention the graphical quality of everything and scale of some of the areas. Did you find it difficult programming and designing all of this to work alongside network support with a smooth framerate; all on the humble Nintendo DS? It is truly one of the most beautiful games on the system, and sets a new bar for the system, kudos!

To Sega WOW:
Based on player responses to the cameo of the Skies of Arcadia trio in Valkyria Chronicles, do you think there is a possibility of a Skies 2 or remake sometime in the near future?
Also, will there ever be more DLC for Valkyria Chronicles that doesn’t involve Edy?
Thanks!

For tri-Ace:
-What was the inspiration for each of the 3 main player characters in Resonance of Fate and could you tell us a little about their personalities and how they interact with eachother?
-What were the main inspirations for the design of the game world?
-What is the overall tone of the storyline and what are the main themes that are explored? What makes the storyline stand out from the many other JRPGs available on the various consoles?
-What was the inspiration for Reanbell’s clothing/character design? It’s great to see a leading female character in a JRPG that for once is actually dressed in practical/modest clothes!
-To what extent was Resonance of Fate designed with western audiences in mind?
-What do you feel is Resonance of Fate’s most unique feature and what will make the game stand out from other JRPGs on the market?
-What was the most difficult part of developing the game?
-What lessons have you learned from the development of Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean: The last hope that will help to make Resonance of Fate superior to your previous games this generation?
-Are there ‘dungeons’ in the game or is it set entirely within the Basel tower and cities?
-Are there multiple routes through the game or multiple endings?
-Does Resonance of Fate feature much exploration or is it more mission or stage based?
-In battle is there a bonus or reward system for playing well (like in Star Ocean 4 or Valkyrie Profile 2)? Can you earn better rewards for things like finishing battles quicker or for doing powerful combos or killing enemies in one strike?
-Do the characters learn skills or abilities as they go through the game and if so how does this work? Also, does magic feature in the game at all?
-Will the Seraphic Gate make an appearance in Resonance of Fate?
-Will there be any cameos from previous tri-Ace characters in the game, for example Lenneth Valkyrie or Gabriel Celeste?
-How much replay value is there? For example are there extra scenes/missions/levels that only become available after finishing the main story and also is there a New Game+ option?
-Do you play as the same 3 characters for all of the game or are there other playable characters that have not yet been revealed?
-Will the PS3 version make good use of the Blu-ray at all, for example using higher-res versions of CG sequences or uncompressed audio?
-It’s been said that in the english version of Resonance of Fate some cutscenes will be subtitles only (no voices) whereas the Japanese version has full voice over for all cutscenes. How many voiceless scenes will there be and why was the decision taken to remove the voice acting from those scenes?
Lastly, a request rather than a question:
Please make Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist for the PS3!
Thanks!

Here are few questions the team of Objectif-Sega (www.objectif-sega.com) would like to ask :
Sonic Team :
- Have you ever thought about making a true sequel to Phantasy Star IV ?
- Which Sonic Team licenses beside Sonic and Phantasy Star do you still think about or would like to develop ? Burning Rangers ? Chu Chu Rocket ? Nights ?
- What the current project that Rieko Kodama is working on ?
- Now that Sonic and Mario went to the snow and closed the loop on the olympic games. What is next ? A brawler ? A platform game ?
WOW/Overworks:
- Will VC2 ever come out on HD console ?
- Is the Skies of Arcadia license still in the team’s mind ? Will you be wanting to develop a sequel ?
- Which other SEGA license would the team like to develop ?
- What do you think about using the Canveas engine for a Jet Set Radio game ?
Tri-Ace :
- Any other project to be published by SEGA ?
- How would you rate your collaboration with Sega ?
- Will you be interested in reviving an old SEGA franchise ? Which one ?

Could you please asked if they plan to do the “connectivity” between PS3 and PSP of Valkyria Chronicles? Like what Ubisoft did for Assassin’s Creed II for PS3 and PSP. I would love to see some of that happening. Thanx!

Here’s a repost of my forum post.
PSZ Team Questions, the question I want asked the most is bolded:
“We know the art style of PSZ was changed in order to aim for a younger audience but why did you choose to enlist Toshiyuki Kubooka specifically? Does SEGA have a relationship with him because of his past work on the Mega CD and Sega Saturn or is it because of another reason? Also, will we see him working on future SEGA products?”
“Now that the team is working on PSP2 how are you bringing the unique skills and experience from working on PSZ to PSP2?”
“Chao gardens are no longer seen in Sonic games and a lot of SEGA fans really miss them. Could you add them to future Phantasy Star games but with Mags instead? Or some kind of pet system that could be used in players’ rooms.”
“What are your future plans for the PC/PS2 and Xbox 360 versions of Phantasy Star Universe? Can we look forward to a new expansion based on the content of Phantasy Star Portable 2?”
“Could you add more 80′s era anime designs as an option when making a character in future games? Specifically ones more in line with the original Phantasy Stars and one’s like in Bubblegum Crisis or Dirty Pair?”
RubyEclipse, THANK YOU for letting us suggest questions.

Please ask SEGA WOW about TROPHIES for Valkyria Chronicles, but not only for the retail game, DLC trophies also. I know people who’d buy DLC just to rack up their Trophy percentage to 100% again.
Please ask them if they’ll consider patching Trophies in, since they’re still working on the game. That’s all the feedback I can give..

Please… Just remind SEGA WOW how much their fans want a sequel… or a prequel… or SOMETHING… Anything…..

1. Can we get trophies in VC? Puhleze?
2. Can we get online multiplayer in VC? I would pay you. Seriously. Lots.
3. Can we get a VC3 on the PS3 with trophies and online multiplayer? I don’t own a PSP and don’t have a place for one in my life.
Also, please bring Skies of Arcadia to the PSN. I’ve never played it but people swear by it so I’m eager to try it.

I only need to say, I am a fan of all the main titles you work on, but nothing outshines that of skies of arcadia. Sure it has aged a little but for its time it was quite literally perfect.
Valkyria Chronicles was fantastic, I finished it just the other day and i’m so pleased to see your care and attention remains to this day. A brilliant story with rich and fun characters and superb gameplay. But you tease me, with the Vyse, Aika and Fina from skies being involved it has re-kindled my lust for another installment in the skies of arcadia franchise.
I am hoping it is a marketing technique, truly, I hope you are using this method to increase the thirst for a new title because i will quite honestly throw money at you in order to get a new skies project. I truly want to give you my money. go on, take it, just give me Skies of Arcadia 2 to a similiar gameplay formula to the original and the production values of Valkyria Chronicles using the same care and attention and i will ask nothing more from you… Until i need a 3rd installment.
Thank you for everything you’ve done so far
