Sands of Destruction to be featured on Gamespot’s “On the Spot” this Saturday!

Howdy SEGA / RPG fans!

Earlier this afternoon we took a ride over to Gamespot’s studios here in San Francisco, and sat down to talk about Sands of Destruction, our epic DS RPG that’s all about destroying the world instead of saving it.  This Saturday, you can watch yours truly presenting Sands of Destruction on Gamespot’s On the Spot show – and you’ll see me rocking some entirely awesome Sands branded wristbands!

Speaking of awesome wristbands, we’ve hooked Gamespot up with a handful of them to give away to their viewers! These limited edition promo items come in a pair, one with the Sands logo on it and the other with everyone’s favorite bad-*** bear, Taupy. There are only a few hundred of these in the world, and we’re giving you guys in the community another chance to win them for yourselves! (The day before, you can also try to score a set in this week’s Free Stuff Friday!)

Sands of Destruction will be arriving in stores just over a week from today! Be sure to tune in to On the Spot this Saturday to see the video, and let us know what you thought! (Also, the first person to watch the video and comment here with the color of my shirt wins free SEGA swag!)

Until Saturday!

Time is Running Out for the PSN and Virtual Console SEGA Mega Sale!

The SEGA Mega Sale, featuring massive price cuts on tons of games for both PlayStation Network and Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console, is nearly over!

You still have time, though, to experience the great savings on these games.

  • The PlayStation Network sale ends Thursday, January 7th.
  • The Wii Virtual Console sale ends Wednesday (Today!), January 6th.

Click here to check out a full list of what’s discounted for PlayStation Network! You can use this sale to stock your new PSP: Go with classic SEGA titles, or you can shore up your PlayStation 3 with DLC for Valkyria Chronicles, and more! This is a great list of games; having a chance to check out some of the very unique titles available on the PSP is an excellent opportunity, and anything at all that adds to the experience of Valkyria Chronicles is aces in my book.

All SEGA titles for the PSP and PSN are 40% off for this sale–everything from the “hard mode” missions for Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, to the Valkyria DLC, to eclectic titles like Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars and Crush.

Meanwhile, this is the final day for the first-ever sale of its kind on Nintendo Wii’s Virtual console! This is your last chance to get 40% off 10 classic SEGA titles–check here for more info and the full list of games offered!

I’m particularly excited by the list of games here–these are some stone cold classics from the Genesis era. In addition to the original three Sonic games, there’s also two of my all-time favorite games–Shining Force and Streets of Rage 2, games I have spent probably hundreds of hours with. There’s also the timelessly addictive puzzle game Puyo Puyo 2, and the totally unique (and funky) original ToeJam and Earl.

Do check out these great games — and take advantage of these great savings while you still have a chance!

Free Stuff Friday for January 8th, 2010

It’s the first Free Stuff Friday of 2010, and we’re kicking off with a bang!

This week’s giveaway is mostly retro-inspired, due to two separate events. First, Clumsy was in Chicago for the New Year’s Eve party with Playboy for Bayonetta, and while he was there he found a great game store with all kinds of treasures inside. He brought some back for Free Stuff Friday giveaways, and this week’s stuff is just the beginning. We will be giving out some of his Chicago finds over the next few (US-led) giveaways. What’s in store? You’ll just have to wait.

Secondly, there was some desk cleaning going on as we approached the end of the year. Partly because we wanted to start the new year with a less cluttered workspace, and partially because we just wanted the holiday to get here already! Well it’s come and gone now, and you might win some of the stuff we dug out of our desks! Again, what you see here is only part of what we accumulated. We’ll also be giving out the rest in future Free Stuff Fridays.

As for the non-retro stuff, we have two items. First, some Sands of Destruction wristbands to celebrate the game’s upcoming release. Clumsy and I have been teasing Ruby about wearing them, and as you’ll see in the video, I think he’s trying to strike back at us.

Finally, we caused quite a stir on Twitter when we posted photos of the fantastic Sonic backpack that we got just before the break. We promised that we’d give it away on January 8th, and we’re true to our word. You have to check out the video to see how awesome it is — it’s not your everyday Sonic backpack.

Enough talk — on to the video! (BTW, I got tired of the font and boring blue background, so I changed them. What do you think?)

On the Block

1. Menacer gun and game (for Genesis)

This has been passed down internally over the years, and we’re finally ready to let it go. This is the peripheral and the game cartridge. As Clumsy said in the video, we believe it works but don’t guarantee it. Either way, you’re sure to have tons of fun and memories with it. My favorite part is the Energizer rebate sticker — rebate expires 12/31/93!

Congrats to our winner, @Jeremy_LaMont!

2. Sands of Destruction Wristbands

Be cool like Ruby, and wear your wristbands!

Congrats to our winner @DJTJ2010!

3. Sonic Fighters T-Shirt (Size L (we think))

This shirt is circa 1996 and features Sonic and his friends. There is no size tag in it, but we estimate it to be a L or XL.

Congrats to our winner @cazza_91!

4. Sonic Surfmore T-Shirt (Size M (we think))

Another shirt without a size tag! We think it’s a M. Not sure of the origins of this shirt, but if you know, please tell us in the comments!

Congrats to our winner @ Talus!

5. Sonic Backpack

Take Sonic on a piggyback ride everywhere you go! The only usable storage space is in his stomach, but hey… when it looks this cool, who cares? Be the envy of our Twitter followers if you win.

Congrats to our winner @joemooredesign!

6. Shinobi Hot Wheels

Another item from Clumsy’s desk! This is a Hot Wheels car with Shinobi on the side. It’s still in its original packaging.

Congrats to our winner @Coistycat!

How it Works

1. You must be following us on Twitter to be eligible. (If you don’t have a Twitter account, you can create one by going to http://www.twitter.com and click the green “get started — join!” button in the center of the page.)
2. At random times on Friday, we will announce the prize we are giving away, and what number of response you need to be to win. Send us a direct message (DM) via Twitter and be that number to win the prize. (@ replies do not count as entries!)
3. All followers are eligible to win all prizes, unless a restriction is noted. Restrictions are usually due to the prize being region-locked. For example, US games that won’t work on UK gaming systems. There may also be age restrictions due to the rating of the game.
4. We will announce the winner on our Twitter feed once eligibility is confirmed.

Make Sure We’re Following You on Twitter

If you are currently following us on Twitter, please be sure that we are following you as well. You can do this by making sure that SEGA is in your “followers” list, or by going to DoesFollow and typing SEGA in the first blank, your Twitter username in the second, and pressing the “check” button. You can reverse this to be sure that you are following us. If you are following us, but we’re not following you, please send a message to @SEGA and we will follow you. This is important, because only people we follow can send us direct messages (DMs), and DMs are the only way to enter the giveaways.

How to Send Direct Messages on Twitter

There are a few ways to send us a Direct Message on Twitter. The easiest way is to go to our Twitter page and select “message” under the “Actions” heading in the side bar. If you do not see “message”, this means that we are not following you. Please send a message to @sega to let us know, and we will follow you. When you click “message” you will be taken to a window where you can type a message and press send.

You may also select the “direct messages” tab from your Twitter homepage, and select SEGA from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. Again, if you don’t see our name there, it’s probably because we’re not following you. Let us know, and we’ll follow you.

There are also many Twitter clients that you can use instead of using the website. These include TweetDeck, Twitteriffic, Tweetie, and Twhirl. Each of these programs works differently, so you’ll want to figure out how to send a direct message on the program you use. If you want to send us a test message, we’ll let you know if we received it or not.
