	Tuesday Feb 02, 2010 Happy Hedgehog Day! It was over a decade ago today that this phrase was commonly heard – and with good reason, as it marked the monumental release of a game called Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Now, sixteen years later, we’re back and ready to use it again – because we’ve got big things in store. As we mentioned over the weekend, we’re turning this week into Hedgehog Week as celebration for the game’s announcement, and for all the amazing work that fans around the world have put in to go above and beyond our challenges. The celebrations kick off today with two pieces of concept art from the first zone, a special giveaway of Sonic 3 signed by one of the Senior Level Designers from the original team, and swag giveaways all day! Then, on Thursday, we’re going to make the internet explode as we announce the real name of Project Needlemouse. Hedgehog Week Calendar: Tuesday, Feb 2nd: Hedgehog Day Celebrations begin! Two new pieces of Concept Art from the first zone, a sneak peek at the game’s music, and a Signed Copy of Sonic 3 giveaway! Thursday, Feb 4th: The big day! Project Needlemouse’s actual title revealed, and an extra Bonus… We know a few of you out there are going “But why can’t you just announce the name of the game today?” For you guys: Please trust us when we say that announcing the game this Thurdsay, which will let us do so alongside the bonus, is going to be completely worth the wait. Hedgehog Day Reward #1: Concept Art! When you’re making a 2D Sonic game, there are some things you’ll almost always need if you want to recapture the feeling of the classics. While momentum based gameplay is a heavy piece of that, the levels themselves also have to exude a style that matches or improves upon what came before them. Often, it is not about attempting to revolutionize, but rather to stay true to the formulas for Sonic’s success that already exist. The zones themselves – and their environments – do more to immerse players into the world than we might notice at first. Today, we’d like to present two pieces of such concept art, which we hope bring smiles to your faces. Let’s start with a classic: The Sunflower has long been a defining feature of Sonic’s beginnings ever since it first appeared in the original Sonic The Hedgehog. Along with the Badniks, it returns in the first zone of Project Needlemouse – and, yes, it actually spins. If there’s one thing we know about Palm Trees, it’s that they tend to hide hidden boxes with power-ups like invincibility. We do not question how exactly such a box managed to find its way to the top of a palm tree, but we do know that finding such boxes hidden in Palm Trees is still pretty awesome. So, consider it official – these guys are coming back, too. While we know that these two pieces of concept art may literally only be a sunflower and a palm tree, and aren’t exactly the most action-packed pictures you’ve seen this year, they express a spirit of the game that we feel is even more important. From Badniks to Zones, there are some things that mean a lot simply because they exist within a game. Hedgehog Day Reward #2: Sonic 3 – Signed Copy Giveaway The concept art may be cool, but it’s not really much of a celebration unless we’ve got even more to give out, right? So let’s get to it! Today we are going to be giving away a ton of Sonic merchandise, including an exclusive signed copy of Sonic 3, autographed by Iizuka-san, one of the Senior Level designers from the original Sonic The Hedgehog 3 / Sonic and Knuckles team! If collectable merch from Sonic’s early days is your thing, or even if you’re only interested mostly because it’s both rare and awesome, then here’s how you can score it: 1: Post a comment on this blog! 2: Be the person who makes the 333rd Comment. 3: Win signed copy of Sonic The Hedgehog 3, boost coolness by +10. Additional prizes will go out to people whose comments hit milestones along the way, including the following comment numbers: 1 5 10 25 50 100 150 200 250 300 330 331 332 333 334 400 450 500 UPDATE: Holy cow – we’ve never seen that many comments come in at once before. You guys literally broke our blogs for a few minutes from sheer traffic! Please sit tight as we approve all the comments so we know exactly who our winners will be – and also, due to the amazing amount of comments that came in, we’re going to add even more prizes to the pot for every 50 comments, starting at 500 and up! We will announce our winners Thursady in a new blog here! Update II: 2,000+ comments, oh my! We want brand new levels that don’t rehash things from the older games. We want it to be a classic Sonic game, but not a Sonic the Hedgehog 1 HD remake. Try making brand new badniks, scenery, levels, and the like. After this, I almost expect you to make the foreground a checkered pattern. Though now curious if this stage is going to be like an updated Green Hill, maybe like Neo Green Hill from Sonic Advance…? Well excited to see Thursday, I know not to get too excited but I’m hoping we seen in game shots, or a trailer or even just 10 seconds of gameplay footage… XD; Well I can dream, can’t I? Today I had an exam and couldn’t help but smile when I thought about it while I drove home. I came home a bit miffed. Maybe it’s because of that, but when I read this post I couldn’t help but feel disappointment, which is a first as far as Needlemouse is concerned. The artwork is lovely, and everything that was said is right, don’t get me wrong… but I expected a screenshot at the very least. Six months and still no screenshots or footage. If this was an ordinary game, then I wouldn’t be like this, but it’s been teased, ovr and over again, the return of the mechanics I love so much. And that’s what I want to see confirmed, more than anything else. Whatever the name it’s going to have, I don’t care. It could be Elise’s Return and I still wouldn’t mind if that mechanics was there, strongly built. I understand if there aren’t any screenshots available. My predictions dictate the game is for Sonic’s 20th anniversary, so it’s probably in it’s early stages. But really, hype alone isn’t cutting for me anymore. Everyone who has crossed paths with me on the internet KNOWS I’m quite optimistic most of the time and I’m not a extremist at all. For example I like Unleashed quite a lot, thank you very much. I went bonkers with the first trailer even though NOTHING was shown, I’ve entered the challenges that were proposed, and I’ve been stalking Needlemouse constantly. So this strange negative feeling might be either a cool down, me having a crap day or just setting myself for disappointment. Or maybe I’ll be surprised and you guys release something about the game thursday. Here’s hoping! Good luck with Hedgehog week, regardless of the outcome. I appreciate all the effort that has been done, which sometimes, it’s not pointed out enough. I’ll run along now, this is not a soap box. I’m a fan of almost all of the Sonic games but, I am useless at most of the 3D games. The concept art reminds me of when I was 6, having seen and later played my friends copy of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System. This art is very much of what appeared in that game and so to be able to play with a glossy upgrade (obviously, with new gameplay) would re-kindle the very feeling I got back then. I’m intrigued to see more of these The music sounds like the old Mega Drive era, if not slighly later. I hoping that the music of Needlemouse will be upbeat and memorable, like Jungle (Sonic 1 MS), Casino Night (Sonic 2 MD), Mystic Cave (Sonic 2 MD). It worked for Megaman, but that’s because that game’s formula never really evolved all that much, and as an 8-bit title, it was still interesting. A decent return to the classic format doesn’t mean that badniks and scenery from games passed needs to be rehashed. Sonic 2, Sonic CD and Sonic 3K all got by using original art and original badniks, and they were very successful. If this is going to end up being a lot of reused stuff from previous games, then we may as well stick with the classics. I hope you prove me wrong, as for me, this game will be make or break for me regarding the Sonic series. The 3D games have been very buggy and rushed and some were far from enjoyable. If the 2D format fails as well, all my interest will quickly disappear. The drum instruments to the music was like listening to the old music of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2; that was really neat. The only thing that seemed out of place however was the other instruments; while clear and crisp, it felt like it was clashing with the old drum instruments in a way. The biggest issue I had with the recent Sonic games was that the overall style and feel of the classic games was sort of lost in favor of a more Pixar animation-y one, so I’m pretty happy you’re actually taken up on addressing this issue. I’m loving the nostalgia, seeing as I’ve been playing the Mega Drive since I was about 4 years old (19 years ago) and literally grew up playing the Sonic games as a result. The old Mega Drive games are the best of the series by a mile if you ask me, and if “Needlemouse” can capture the spirit of these games (so far it’s looking that way, but I’d really like to see some gameplay soon!!) then I’ll buy it on day one. To run the flash file in order to hear the “sound track” you have to select the “language” “American” in the top right corner. Otherwise it doesn’t play. I’m kind of excited about the whole thing, however, I think that a continuation of the old-style (retro) Sonic games will soon lead to disappointment. Old-school fans will realize that the old sonic games are not as great any more. Some have already realized this when they heard the “sound track” I think. However, the Day Stages of Sonic Unleashed are THE WAY TO GO regarding the style of mixed 2D-3D gameplay, the graphics design (theme), the music. I know this will not happen for Project Needlemouse, but listen for the future: Let Sonic 5 be like the day stages of unleashed with some improvements: - More platforming between “running” areas - 50% 2D 50% 3D and keep the dynamically changing camera perspectives. The camera perspectives are actually the biggest innovation of sonic unleashed. The changing camera perspectives are what the loops where in the 90ies!!!! - Return back Sonics classical shape/look. Make him Sawnic! Sonic is a SAW! He should automatically turn into a saw when he approaches a enemy at high speed (not the windshield). Anyone else getting a Sonic 3D vibe from the music – apart from the obvious Sonic 1 credit reference at the start. The way the music whammy’s is what makes it 3D esque in my mind. That game didnt have the best music of the 16-bit era but at least Sega are offering us old-school style music. Do we know if this is Sonic Team working on this as a definite? Second Sonic Adventure was alright, but everything else just seemed like the team was trying to hard. Werehedgehogs and Sonic with Sword just seemed incredibly off like Shadow using a car, and guns. Though, I have to say my most favorite is Sonic and Knuckles, it was grand and the fact I could play Knuckles in the previous titles were pretty awesome too. I hope the new sonic game will reclaim the popularity it once had with people my age. I hope the Needlemouse will rise to expectations and beyond as well, and hopefully no incredibly silly plot. I think I can speak for most that we’re happy as hell to see the old Sonic again — though, the biggest criticism is freshness, so most seem glad it’s a new adventure, rather than a rehash. #2. I’m not going to win a prize, but I’m glad you guys are doing what you’re doing. Never forget the fans that brought Sonic to where he is today.
