Our 333′rd comment, by Alex, was as follows:
In honor of Hedgehog Day, here’s the Sonic 3 Hedgehog Day Commercial
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyvKTUFGxZw#t=49s
That commercial brought back great memories – a post well worth the prize! If your name is on the list above, contact RubyEclipse on the SEGA forums via private message to claim your swag! Now for some quick Q & A on Hedgehog Day:
Q. I used to be #25 on the list, but now I’m #23! I was really hoping to win a prize – what happened?
A. Some comments may have shifted up or down based on comments in our moderation queue getting approved. However, if you were listed as a winner and were super excited about it, please write into us via private message anyway and let us know! In light of the massive amount of comments and all the people awaiting approval, we’re going to do whatever we can to hook you guys up.
Q. Was it possible to win more than one prize?
A. It was possible to win the signed copy of Sonic 3 and one additional prize. For the side prizes (#50, etc), we’ve increased the number of people getting swag, in cases where the person who won had also hit a milestone previously. In those cases, the person with double hits will still get two prizes, and the person whose comment was just before theirs also gets a prize. (And is listed as the winner above.)
Featured Badnik Art
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 may be known across the internet now, but we’ve still got lots of awesome concept art to show off from the community! We’ll kick things off with some of the most creative entries of the last week – conversely, check here for an even bigger album of fan-submitted concept art!

The oreo challenge has been bested! Behold the Oreo Badnik, a dangerous foe whose only weak spot is his frosted center. This guy wins major cred!

Aha! Technosqueek from Flying Battery Zone, with a much more modern approach. Props for creativity here!

Another seriously impressive piece of art – major kudos for how well this one turned out!

Not only did this fan make his badnik out of Skittles, but he even took up his entire kitchen to craft up Green Emerald Hill Zone! Gold star for both effort and creativity here! (Did you end up eating the skittles afterwards?)

Another culinary creation… this time it’s Buzz Bomber, made entirely out of potatoes!

Aww… in this image, we see what Motobugs really dream about. Nice job!

And now, for one of our favorites:

WIN!
Happy Friday, everyone!

Really?! Wow, I can’t thank you enough Ruby, although I do think the Hedgehog Day Commercial does definitely deserve the signed copy.
I’m a little confused though…and I REALLY don’t mean to sound greedy or anything here (I’m just happy I won something in the first place!) but do I get two prizes? I’m comments 334 and 800, but I’m not sure.
Thanks Ruby, you’re the greatest.

THANK GOD! lol. Congrats to all the winners, and my sincerest condolences to everyone who thought they won, but didn’t.
I went through quite a few ups and downs myself. It may not mean much coming from someone who still won anyway, but for a while at least, I still felt your pain.
Kind of bummed that MY oreo creation didn’t make the feature, but I gotta give major kudos to the muffin. Way funnier than mine <3

It’s EMERALD Hill Zone.

Thank you SEGA and looking forward to this new Sonic game (hopefully for PC as i don’t have any new consoles since ps2, but would buy a new console just for this lol). Oh and throw Tails as a playable character in there please. (< Tails fan)

The cupcake badnik, that is just so perfect. Even better: as he “throws” his orbs at you, you get to eat the cupcakes. So it’s not just a cupcake badnik, but a *canonical* cupcake badnik. That is just awesome all over the place.
Also love the psychedelic firefly from Sonic 2. But really, amazing work all around. Color us impressed.

I think I might know what the 4th console is. The Sega Zone. Here are my reasons:
The sega zone looks like it will be made for downloaded content
It was hinted that games other than the current 50 will be added to the list
This game and the sega zone are both set for release this summer

Oh and that trailer was really laughable and mediocre. You actually messed up the sprites for all three games. The Sonic 1 animation is incomplete, the Sonic 2 running animation is screwed up (what with the third foot and swirl?) and the Sonic 3 animation is jerky. Who do have working for you Sega? I mean wow.. :/ Kinda pathetic for a multi-billion dollar video game company..
Five months or more you’ve been working on this return to roots masterpiece, and you show us a tech demo pretty much. Just wonderful. Speaking of “returning to his roots”, what is this, the sixth time? I’ve lost track. Seriously..

His voice acting should contribute to the optimism of the games performance for the future release date. SEGA i want to see the original voice actor of Sonic Adventure make a return to this point of the videogame franchise.

The following is the opinion of a man
who is conflicted and about a company
that chose the wrong name. If you don’t
want to read any negativity about Sonic 4
(or you don’t like to read), turn back now.
If you’re going to read on, you’re going to
read parts that you might agree with and
parts that you might not agree with. So is
the nature of opinion.
My first Sonic forum was Sonic Fan Games
HQ and it is where I rose to the community
status that I have today. My first administration
job was there and it is also where I met a lot of
people to get me in the position that I’m in today.
SFGHQ is where I began development on Sonic
Nexus, a project that I began because I did not
think SEGA would provide another classic romp
ever again. When college allows me to work on it,
Nexus is my only gateway to an “all-new adventure.”
SFGHQ is also the home of many “Sonic 4″ fangames
that have come and gone over the years. People have
always dreamed of making the direct sequel to Sonic 3
& Knuckles and have either given up, lost interest, or
have changed the name of their game to rid themselves
of the high expectations that they have set for themselves.
SEGA is now guilty of setting their own bar too high.
I kid you not, there is a Sonic Retro wiki article for every
pixel of this screenshot.
Before you stop reading the article to comment on how
3-seconds of gameplay cannot justify an opinion as
critical as mine, I’ll remind you that classic Sonic fans
only need a little to break down anything and everything
within a single frame. Sites like Sonic Retro, SFGHQ, and
Zone:0 exist for a reason. We have perfected analyzing
every pixel, color, and motion in the classic Sonic games.
If anybody’s going to not fall prey to the hype monster… it’s us.
You might say that we’re ungrateful for not being completely
sold or hating what we have seen thus far of a project that
Ken Ballough, SEGA’s brand manager, said is finally intended
for us. In reality, are we really unappreciative for dogging on it?
The game is called Sonic the Hedgehog 4, a direct sequel to
a trilogy made famous on perfection. We do not have ridiculously
high expectations. When you name the game Sonic 4, it has to
be perfection. If it’s not, you might as well piss all over my Genesis.
SEGA PR giving reasons as to why I’m not pleased is making
excuses for something undeserving of a title that they gave it.
It’s not us… it’s them.
Isn’t “concept art” supposed to help conceive new ideas? I saw
this spinning flower 19 years ago.
The original games are also built on creativity. Where one game
came up short, the other expanded upon and surprised you with
more. Sonic 2 introduced a spindash, another character, and
Super Sonic. Sonic 3 had a “tropical green trope” zone to begin
the game, but broke precedent and set it on fire almost immediately.
Sonic & Knuckles introduced a playable Knuckles and lock-on
technology, which even breathed new life into Sonic 2. The bar was
raised whether you were prepared for it or not. With 3-seconds of a
Green Hill rip-off and an Emerald Hill corkscrew, along with old
badniks, Green Hill palmtrees and flowers, Sonic 4 currently does
not surprise or rise above the three games before it.
The blatant rehashing of old materials is fangame quality at best.
Even the story admits that this game will be bringing back
“Eggman’s finest creations.”
Yes, “official fangame” is an oxymoron, but that’s what Sonic 4
looks like thus far: an average bit of fan-service that ultimately
does not live up to its choice of name. Aside from the
aforementioned “fangame n00b mistake” of a name, the game is
rehashing old stuff and updating their looks to make it all seem
“new.” For most of fangame creators, that is all we really do to
make level art and badniks, since we lack the skill to sprite original
things ourselves. Observe:
The art style of the classics is there in the trailer, but we saw
Green Hill nearly two decades ago.
With the talk of art style also comes Sonic’s appearance and
where the train really comes off the tracks. The pudgy,
short-spined, black-eyed original doesn’t return. What a sequel
to the Genesis games gets is the lanky, floppy-spined,
green-eyed wannabe that has been romping around King Arthur’s
court as a werehog with Shadow, Cream, Marine, Silver and the
ruffles. I do not care about confusing the children and being
consistent with Sonic’s modern design. The Sonic I knew has a
spirit attached to him that no other character can match. Even
a re-design of Sonic would have sufficed because, hey, we are
rebooting, right? If the game was called something else, modern
Sonic wouldn’t be an issue. However, the game is called “Sonic 4.”
The face of failure… or someone who just farted.
“Modern” Sonic’s appearance hit me the hardest. SEGA had lied to us.
They invoked the winged ring back on 9.9.09. They made a whole
forum skin around the Genesis sprites. The “Hedgehog Day” flash
ditty was classic Sonic coming out of a hole. Classic Sonic was
coming back. Even the trailer had a classic Sonic retrospective!
My hopes were dashed when the face of an underwhelming decade
faded up at the end of the trailer. SEGA’s commitment to finally
pleasing its original fanbase after sixteen years was a front.
Ken Ballough said it himself: Sonic 4 is our game. When a new
Sonic game came out with 10 new characters and laser guns,
we clamored for a return to form and SEGA has finally obliged.
The kids have had their games and they were mediocre at best,
most being the butt of jokes across gaming websites.
If Capcom can commit to classic Mega Man to the point of fully
embracing its past by making awesomely bad box-art, then so
can you, SEGA.
Here’s a fan’s altered “Sonic 4″ model. Looks like a winner to me.
*FAN EDITED SONIC 4 MODEL*

*FAN EDITED SONIC 4 MODEL*
Last week, I had chastised a few people at SFGHQ for an absurd
amount of complaining over the Needlemouse contests and the
eventual recycling of old badniks. My posts were along the lines
of, “Shut up, you guys. Classic Sonic is returning. This is what we
want! Can’t you be happy?”
Unfortunately, now I’m the one doing the complaining. What Sonic 4
appears to be isn’t what I want.
SEGA, you owe it to your legions of 20-something and older fans
to make a change. Our commitment to you when we were still
wetting beds in tacky windbreakers is why you are still around today.
We defended you on the playground against those Mario-loving,
Super Nintendo owning sons of bitches. We followed you to consoles
that were complete failures.
Either change the name and respect what are still Sonic’s best games
or fix what I saw in that trailer. I will not settle for anything less than
perfection. We’ve been settling for a decade now. Provide throwbacks
while expanding and innovating.
The time is now. The choice is yours, SEGA.
You might think I’m overreacting (hell, I think I am, too), but that is just
how close the name “Sonic 4″ is to me. Again, if the name wasn’t “Sonic 4,”
I would be completely sunshine smiles right now, but that’s not the case.
There is a weight so heavy tied to “Sonic 4″ that I doubt anybody will ever
be able to pick it up.

*FAN EDITED SONIC 4 LOGO*
*FROM ANOTHER FAN – NOT BY ME*
I think that worrying about the looks and living up to expectations
is something that never really happens. If this was going to be a
perfect Sonic 4, then they would have to please only one part of the
fans. What about the people who like the 3D games now-a-days?
They would have to cater to the fans and they would have to listen
to every detail. Besides, i think if how much ranting has gone on with
barely any footage of the game itself, I think that SEGA should stop
production on this game and make a squeal to Sonic ‘06 because
people are assuming things from what we know, could be the greatest
game ever made. But now, SEGA just might make this game even
WORSE than Sonic ‘06 because they can’t have any freedom with
Sonic at ALL. Seriously, I’ve played the classics, the 3D games,
the GBA and DS games and what I can see is that the 3D games
are for new age players and are too different from game to game to
be coming from ideas from just the team themselves. The GBA and
DS games are 2D and are great games and good games that have
feelings of the classics. Yet, no one cares about those games as it
seems. I see the appeal of the older games and I like them, but they
are not my favorite because they are older games that don’t have the
same game play feel of the GBA and DS games. The feeling of the
crisp backgrounds makes me feel like I am actually in that area. This
is just my opinion, but I just needed to get it out somewhere.
*FROM YET ANOTHER FAN – NOT BY ME*
I think that when people read the Sega was coming back with
classic adventure, they expected a Sonic with 16 bits graphic,
16 bits music, maybe they we’re expecting a GENESIS game.
When I read they were coming back with the classic adventure,
I was expecting a totally new game BASED on the old ones, that
feels like an old one, that PLAYS like an old one. Just this. And
I’m a player of the series since Sonic 1.
I don’t care if they put homing attack instead of Insta-Shield, we
never, EVER, complained about it when they released Sonic 3.
“Sonic 2 didn’t have Insta-shield, so why they had to put this
crap here”, I never saw anyone saying that. If the homing attack
is made good and right, I don’t see WHY it should be left out of
the game, since it can add good things to the game too (like
alternative paths, etc).
I don’t care it they use a new or old style artwork, what I care
is if the game feels and plays like the old ones. “Oh, he have
green eyes, when he should have black eyes…”. Seriously,
WTF!? I’ll not even comment on this, because it’s too much
childish.
“Eggman should be called Robotinik”. JUST CALL HIM
Robotinik. Even now, when SEGA america has decided to
use this name for the newer games, I still call him Robotinik.
Hell, we still even don’t know if the game will have voices
(probably NOT), this does not affect the gameplay after all.
I don’t want to play with a FAT Old-School Sonic. If I wanted
that, I would play through the old ones. But I don’t care if they
have an option to play with an old and the newer Sonic on the
game, it would please everyone, and that’s one of the best
suggestions right now. I think SEGA is already considering this.
About the Sonic animation running, SEGA already said thats
not the final animation, so let’s wait to see first. Yeah, by just
those 3 seconds, it’s really stiff, but there’s still space to make
it better, they can add the “screech” animation later, etc. Anyway,
I like how he runs on Advance and Rush series, but they said
already that his legs will spin on his fastest speed, so rest assured.

Well since none else seems to of noticed I guess I’ll have to tell everyone.
They said Sonic 4 episode 1 is like Sonic 3 is episode 1 and Sonic and Knuckles episode 2,
Well From that I tell what they are doing.
They are going to have Sonic 4 episode 2 be a virtual lock-on cartridge (like Sonic and Knuckles) which will continue the game further.
And like Sonic 3 and Knuckle you will be able to get the Super Emeralds allowing Sonic to turn into HYPER SONIC (not Super sonic, for the young fans).
Hey Sega listen your probably not gonna let this message onto the blog to keep what I discovered secret so I’ll let you know,
I think it’s awesome bringing Sonic back to his roots and Having Hyper Sonic come back,
But could you make Sonic’s running animations look a little more like the original, it looks like he’s just walking and not going super fast.
If you fix this I’ll keep quiet about the Hyper Sonic and virtual lock-on stuff.

I just thought of something….
Apparently SEGA is releasing some sort of thing called RingWeb or RingEdge or something later this year… So it’s possible the mystery console/system that Sonic 4 is going to be released on is one of those two game systems SEGA is planning on releasing.
What I don’t get is… Why RingWeb or whatever it’s called? Why not call it the Dreamcast 2 SEGA?

Because the ring-edge is stupid and Sega knows it. It’s a cheap piece of hardware that doesn’t even count as a console. It’s got a bunch of pre-loaded Genesis games and a couple of crappy wii-knock offs. As of right now, it won’t be able to add any new games, and it will not include online connectivity (in other words: you couldn’t download Sonic 4 even if the hardware COULD handle it).

This is what we want SEGA. Just look to those guys at Sonic Retro if you’re going to make a Retro Sonic. They know what they’re doing and apparently you don’t.
Also, I swear I saw Sonic stick to the ground when moving up that incline after the corkscrew in the trailer. That Sonic Advance cheat-physics will not cut it if you are touting ‘momentum-based gameplay’ like the old Sonics. Get the physics right. Get Sonic right. No more anorexic, drug abusing Sonic for the love of all that is good in this world. Give us our chubby little mascot back already. What is wrong with you?

Hello RubyEclipse , i would like to be one of the first to vote for My pal Classic sonic when it comes the the sonic Design, Because if this game is a true Sequel and has the same Time-line, then Sonic himself ( and others) Should Resemble the grate Classics.
this is a game in a sense that is back to the genesis formula am i correct?
then i think you guys should bring it all full circle, not only would sonic’s
image be restored to it’s former glory in the eyes of many, but also, be as awesome and nostalgic as playing megaman 9! we Classic fans miss out short black eyed
Blue hero with a Attitude we need that in your face classic sonic back
Please see if we can have a heart felt reunion with him
if you do, sonic will truly be back, back to his roots and back
to where we first left him in sonic 3 and Knuckles.
and most of all it will feel even more like a solid True Sequel

The countdown on the Sonic 4 website revealed nothing? What is going on? I thought we were going to see some new Character information. That’s a disappointment.

For some reason when some people were saying they couldn’t get the intro to work, somebody who could see it put their link on the forum. Everyone who then followed that link (even though it was exactly the same url) had no problems.
If you use the http://www.sonicthehedgehog4.com link rather than the sega.com/sonic4 one, it should work fine.

Maybe it was a corrupt cache on my browser but after clearing it and going back to the Sonic 4 website, I can see the new Badniks category. Looking good! I wish they would reveal information a little faster. All this waiting is hard!

Even though they say that Sonic will be the only playable character in this game, I still hope that perhaps they secretly putting other playable characters in it; at least Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and maybe Amy. And What about a two-player mode–it would make the game more fun for all Sonic and non-Sonic fans alike.

@157 – That would be counterproductive. They need to give Sonic a new, fresh start. Frankly, Shadow was the problem, and always has been. He was fine in Sonic Adventure 2, but after that he became nothing but a distraction from what Sonic gameplay is really supposed to be.

We want classic Sonic like we were expecting from the silhouette in the original teaser.

It’s important. Please ignore the artistically-challenged people who say it isn’t. Sonic being cool and cute (as opposed to ugly and lanky) directly affects the enjoyment of controlling him, the feel we get from seeing him and by extension the atmosphere of the game.
Atmosphere is one of the most important things after the gameplay.
Sega we wanted to play as Sonic, not his freaky mutant clone. And yes they do look THAT different.

@162 You mean “I want classic Sonic”, not “we”. Don’t presume to speak for everyone else, as if everyone actually cares what he looks like.

so this is where some people went. listen, the new sonic is the older teen version of our favorite blue hedgehog, its not an anorexic drug using bandicoot. the fact is that sonic grew up. a combo sonic would have been a good choice but as it stands thats not enough to discount and disregard a game.
p.s. all the art work is great.

@chris
iv read his article and in his statement he basically says i can judge a book by its cover, made by someone who cant accept chainge. im not against new sonic and insulting old sonic is tabuu. i’ll say though that 1st charecter skins dont entierly determin a course of the game, if its good its good, if bad its bad. you cant have your cake and eat it, not everything in life will be good and the way we want it so as my parents tought me im greatful that sega even considered a classic style console game. the point is to not pelt sega with comments of little value (eyes green sonics dead, hes not real sonic etc) but to raise valid points. the only thing to do is to judge it by its play, even if it had classic sonic it could still be the new 06 of 2010, in reallity its play that matteres most. weather its fun or not and if it has good machanics

sweet!i love the old sonic, i loved the games! These art is awesome, so keep it up guys!
Just to all the people saying “it’s not um… u… Retro!” i really think they are trying this time! So SEGA, keep the games up! i don’t care what game it is everygame was great! So please make sure you DON’T critize SEGA about thier games, they are trying! Plus, i heard a rumor that sonic is going to be in super mario galaxy 2. Suprising. Yet satisfying.
Mario and Sonic can do stuff together. Cool, for a final boss mario vs. sonic for a misunderstanding, sonic says nothing, nor mario, and shake hands understanding. So all people who think SEGA isn’t trying to do whatever “you” want, your just always Going to critize it like you do everything. YAY! I’m done! SEGA, keep it up!

Was looking forward to Sonic 4, but with the Yakuza 3 fiasco (http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/02/24/whats-up-with-yakuza-3/), screw this.

Posting in hopes that this post actually makes it through. I forgot which email I used. So on the off chance this gets duplications, I apologize.
These are my two cents, Ruby and any other officials possibly watching.
As I said before, make the game harder. Your target audience is most likely in the age range at which ease of gameplay (I.E. what Miyamoto has been doing for so long) will no longer suffice. Don’t be afraid to place bottomless pits in some areas. Not saying you should do what you did with the Sonic Advances/Rush, but don’t listen to those complaining about them. Don’t be afraid of making some more; They existed before in the originals. Also, having bottomless pits at the end of levels only isn’t the right way to go.
Reduce the amount of rings in the levels, as we’re practically force fed them. This makes death by zero ring count useless, and there really isn’t any point of such an implementation if you will not utilize. Don’t be afraid of challenging your audience. They’ll get over it eventually when they’ve triumphed and will be happier for it. Also, fix the homing attacks ability to avoid penalties. Seems like you can do it on just about any enemy and it won’t matter. Shell cracker for example is easily toppled from the looks of it.
As for bosses, again, Splash Hill and Casino Street are too easy. They will not suffice. Either increase the length of the second phase, or make the overall boss more challenging. Even Sonic 2′s Casino Night’s boss is harder than Casino Street’s boss. Lost Labyrinth boss’s first phase is too easy. The player seems to be able to easily blitz through it without any trouble whatsoever. Second phase is fine though. The 4th boss could do to be a little more challenging. Increasing the length of hits it takes for the second phase would be nice.
The final boss looks good, although unless you’re going to improve on the bosses, the boss rush before hand is useless, especially considering, again…. the player gorges on rings like no tomorrow in that stage.
