Community Member Interview: DragonofDojima17Perhaps few were more passionate or more dedicated to the future of a series that launched in the US in 2006 than a handful of people who fought hard to make SEGA aware of their love for the brand. That series, as one could probably guess, is Yakuza, and one of those people is a guy who goes by DragonofDojima17.
Long before Yakuza 3 had been announced for the US, DoD17 created his own Yakuza style plaque, showing it on his youtube page (among numerous other videos) to prove his passion for the game. A number of us were watching, and when Yakuza 3 finally was announced for the U.S., we offered to mount his plaque on the walls at SEGA of America HQ if he wanted to send it in to us. That plaque now sits proudly right next to a huge Dragon cutout (the same Dragon tattoo that Kazuma has) in our production area. We got to chat a bit with DragonofDojima17 about how that love for Yakuza came to be – his full interview is below! Interview: DragonofDojima17SEGA: When did you first notice Yakuza? What got you into the series?
DoD: As I sat there watching my friend play the game for the first time, I thought it was okay until he got into fight. When I saw the battle mode I fell in love with the game instantly. It made me think back to those days when I used to play Streets of Rage on my SEGA Genesis. My friend let me borrow his copy, and I played it for a year, and I must have beaten it over 30 times, and then I went out to buy my own copy and beat that another 48 times. It took me a while to appreciate the story, but I fell in love with it after the third time I beat the game. I just couldn’t wait until Yakuza 2 came out. When I first played Yakuza 2 I grew to love the series even more, it became my favorite game series ever. I’m glad Yakuza 2 had the original Japanese voices, if it was dubbed I don’t even think I would enjoy it as much, Japanese language is so beautiful. I also want to add the I love Yakuza 2’s story the best, the romance between Kaoru and Kazuma was heart warming and Ryuji Goda is my favorite villain.
What do you think of Kazuma Kiryu as a character? DoD: Kazuma is the my favorite video game character ever. He’s my hero. Kazuma is a real man, he’s tough as nails, he believes in fate, and he’ll push himself hard to help others. I just love everything about him, the way he talks, his personality, his fighting style, his morals, EVERYTHING. No other character has touched me the way the Legendary Dragon of Dojima has.
DoD: Pretty much everything to be honest. It’s the fighting and stories I like the most. You just don’t find games like theseanywhere. I just love the setting, being able to explore Tokyo, what could be better? Are you interested in going to Japan one day? If so, has that interest been piqued at all by what you’ve seen in Yakuza?
DoD: Goro Majima all the way!!!
DoD: To step into the shoes of the Legendary Dragon of Dojima for a 3rd time roaming the streets of Tokyo and experience brutal battles. Also, to witness another great heat twisting plot and hear Majima scream “KIRYU-CHAN!”.
DoD: That he has created the greatest video game series I have ever played. There’s nothing better than Yakuza, I love these games more than anything. It changed my life, and I want to thank him for creating this masterpiece and that I will always keep it in my heart for the rest of my life.
As Yakuza 3 ships next week, we’d like to give a salute to DragonofDojima17 and all the people who worked with him on their campaign to help raise awareness of the game in the states. From one fan to another – a little shout out, and a job well done.

We already new the hostesses would still be in the game and we could still go on dates with them. Tell us something we don’t know. Like are we getting the cut content as DLC. It’s been about a week and you people don’t say anything. If you would just say YES it will come as DLC or NO It will never be coming as DLC. It’s clear at this point it’s never coming as DLC. It would be nice for a confirmation though.

Yeah, we know the hostess are in the game, but without the clubs to meet them and talk to them, are they really hostesses any more, or just strange girls that call Kazuma at random?
We’re still wondering about shogi, mahjong, and hanafuda btw.

Wow. Great way to misrepresent someone. Why don’t you just kick him in the balls and spit in his face and get it done with?
He’s obviously the most vocal guy AGAINST your cuts of things we are too stupid to understand and now you portray him as the biggest proponent of your “What-was-left-of-Yakuza-3-after-we-removed-the-stuff-you’re-too-stupid-to-understand” edition.
Way to -ing go. Are you guys seriously incompetent or does reality just not resonate with you?
And where the hell are the comments you promised in the other post?

Hmm, wonder what DoD will make of this now? At one point he was not very happy with the cuts, from the Yakuza forum below.
dragonofdojima17 – EVERYONE PLEASE WATCH: SEGA and I Made a Small Deal, Proof, A VIDEO, and a Message:
“In return for the plaque, SEGA sent me some interview questions, they wanted to return the favor by making my name known for what I did … After all I did, what we did, and what I did for them, they rip us off. They give us half of the game. SEGA should be ashamed!! This is a punch to my face. I almost want to demand my plaque back! THEY DON’T DESERVE IT!!! I am telling you all, we can’t allow SEGA to do this!! We can’t!! We can either get them to push the release date, and translate and give us the whole game!!! THEY SHOULDN’T BE CUTTING ANYTHING!! ITS DISGUSTING AND HEART BREAKING!!! ESPECIALLY AFTER WHAT I DID!!”

Wow, Sega. what a disrespectful slap in the face to one of your most passionate fans. DoD is very outspoken about the cuts to the NA release of Yakuza 3 and this posting is just like kicking him when he’s down. Your marketing and public relations departments really need to be re-evaluated.
The fact is you are still trying to sell game at full price which has had content removed. Sega hasn’t even be respectful enough to their fans to give them a full list of what content has been cut. This only leads me to believe that it is more extensive than we think and they fear losing even more customers because of it.
Your excuses range from it not “resonating” with western audiences (which is a very disrespectful and quite presumptuous thing to say) to cost-cutting measures… but quiet honestly i don’t care why you did it, nor do i care what specific content was removed- be it missions, mini-games or other content. It’s still all the same in the end; you expect me to buy a product that is not 100% complete for full price.
Not going to happen. I will not pay full price plus whatever you decide to charge for DLC to fill in the holes..
My guess it that your stripped the game down only so you could sell it back to us as DLC at a later date. Times are tough and you might be looking for as many revenue streams as possible, but money is tight for everyone and i don’t like to be nickle and dimed to death with add-on content that should have been in the original release. There are too many other options available in March. Maybe i’ll consider Y3 in the future, once the price accurately reflects the product content, but it will depend on the reviews of this “edited-for-westerners” version.
to everyone using the false logic argument that I should buy it anyway since it’s still a fun game… that’s just nonsense. Pixel Junk Monsters was a fun game, but I wouldn’t pay $60+ for it…

All of those YouTube videos he recorded to get Yakuza 3 in English are amazing efforts.
But still………
After reading the interview, there’s not a single line of dragonofdojima’s & most of our disappointment & complains about the contents cut… >: (
He even wanted SEGA to return his homemade Yakuza 3 plaque after the contents cut news broke…
So much for this “interview” with the fan of the series…

Basically we are being deceived to buy a product with no explanation? What about people that have pre-ordered, and are unaware of the cuts? that itself should fall under some law, as they are not receiving the item that was described to them?

Now that we have Yakuza 3, Sega please give us DLC!!! I think you underestimated how popular the mini games like shogi, and mahjong, and running and going to a hostess club really is. Man, atleast give us a yes or no answer, the silences isn’t cool.

But after 600 comments its a shame that Sega still doesn’t understand, we know already abouts dating them.
By the way you lied (again) Sega, you said we get 99% but apparently its 97.78% of the game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakuza_3 -> look at completion of 619 compared with 633 and the overall known removed contents) we are getting. And the contents cut can suffice for least 16 hours or more of gameplay depending on the gamer.

I’m glad this interview gets DoD17′s name out there a little more, because he did do a lot to try to get the series released outside of Japan.
However, this interview is obviously old. We all know how he feels about the cuts because most of us feel the same way. Releasing this interview *now* gives the impression that he’s just fine with how things turned out, which is obviously not true if you look at his posts here and elsewhere. It’s misrepresentation. If you were to talk to him now, I’m sure his responses wouldn’t be as excitable.
They also took the opportunity to gloss over the cut situation, basically repeating stuff we’ve heard. What about other stuff that’s in the game? Just how much stuff can we expect to find? What else did you take out? What was left in so it’s one less thing to be concerned over?
Another misstep for Sega. I can’t say I’m interested in keeping my pre-order anymore.

Yeah, well…I mean, c’mon, people! Even if he’s mad that they cut content now, I’m sure the things he says in this interview still stand. He’s obsessed with this series, Kiryû, and Japan.
Tho’ I still gotta say that if the hostesses ARE in the game, but the hostess clubs aren’t, that’s…really weird man! Not that I love that part of the series but I understand it’s a big part of the game (look at the history for Ryû ga Gotoku 4 on the official site; there’s a ton of press releases and videos on the hostesses). Plus, like…if they’re in there, why not translate the dialogues and let people play their precious dating sim mini-games (I think KENZAN! handled this aspect better myself, tho’).

I totally agree we all no mater what side of the fence were on need a response to our complaints. Maybe it is a marketing move to get us to buy the software, get our money, complain, and then get more money from us IF they decide to update it or “re-release it)
Maybe SEGA Japan should have the head of customer service step down or maybe even higher up the ladder. We WANT and answer. Or this summer when I go to Japan maybe I need to walk into Sega and formally complain.

Going into the various shops, Donki-Hotei for one I can still hear it blasting from the front door but we should get some form of a response from the company. There has been plenty of chatter. If it doesnt happen well it doesnt happen, BUT if they bring 4 to the west I hope they talk to us more in the future. Hope my rants have somewhat made sense.

Yeah I went to Japan a couple years ago for a 2 week vacation.
I was in Shibuya really late at night and this guy comes up to. He says “Best girls in my club. Come with me,. Best Girls, Best Girls.”
He was smoking a cigarette and wearing a leather jacket. As he said “Best girls” he made a motion with his hand and mouth like he was giving a Blow Job.
It was when he did this motion that I noticed the bright red, numerous, and wet looking sores covering his lips and chin.
The moral of the story : Hostess clubs, and nightlife in general, is filthy in Japan.

But I think the games themselves represent the “shot bars” really well like the one in Osaka in Yakuza 2. I used to go into the real ones. Really clean, ritzy places and had more fun talking to the bar tender in Japanese than anything else.
No matter your opinion on Hostess clubs, massage parlors, etc. If the artist who came up with the game put them in there its up to you to decide if you want to go in, just like in real life. Again what makes the game so encredible. YOU choose to do certain things.

SEGA should post somthing on their site right out there infront of everyone stating the cuts (ALL of them) IF they are willing to have a download, etc. Also if you can go to pool halls. karaoke, etc with them. I HAVE lived in Japan long enough to know the everage woman doesnt dress like that UNLESS she works at………………….drum roll……… a HOSTESS CLUB so I’d be more confused not knowing why I am asking out this woman dressed like a princess and not know why she is dressed like that. I just want to put this out to corporate SEGA. Grab a team of rampant bilingual Yakuza series fans, and bring them in to assist programmers cheaply in translating, and there are many out there who would likely pay in excess of $100 for a Yakuza collection (1, 2, & the wonderful samurai version that didn’t make it here before). Toss in Yakuza 3 w/ the full original content put back in (quiz less important), and I’d pay $150 for it (even trading in my first Yakuza 3 purchase to do so!) The only real production cost would be translating the hostess bar part & translating the “missing episode”. As a CPA, I see a good profit margin in this, even with limited sales, and you may be surprised how many people would buy if Yakuza 3 was the first one they tried!
Posted by Lamar Davies on March 5th, 2010 at 6:28 am
Comment # 52
Look guys, I’m a CPA, and a rabid Yakuza fan, and I hate that content was left out. But w/ my knowledge as a CPA, I WILL DEFINITELY BUY, b/c we almost didn’t get this one due to dismal yakuza 2 sales here. You have to remember that our victory is that we are getting the game at all. The way to guarantee they won’t do it again is to BUY now, and continue to complain. If they don’t get the sales, we won’t see Yakuza 4, simple as that. They aren’t a charity organization working for the good of the common gamer, they are a company. Hell, I’d pay $5-10 to get the hostess bar back in, b/c it’s still cheaper than paying for a new japanese version of Yakuza 3, shipping it, and spending the time with a dictionary trying to play it with timed text choices in the game making it near impossible to do so (if you want to play w/out a guide). This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t complain, but the best way to GET Yakuza 4 and get it without cuts is to show them the money, unfortunately.
Posted by Lamar Davies on March 5th, 2010 at 6:35 am
Comment # 53
Sorry Lamar, you’re wrong. Showing them the money isn’t the best way to get Yakuza 4. Even if we all buy this joke of a localization there’s still no guarantee that they’ll release 4 someday, let alone without major cuts. Turns out that all you get for the money is an incomplete copy of Yakuza 3! No, Sega’s not a charity organization, but I’m not in the business of giving charity either. I don’t pay $60 for products that provide less than I expect for that price.

Sega, you screwed us over. All that stuff gone, which we suspected, and you refused to confirm because you knew it’d affect sales even more than RELEASING THE GAME THE SAME DAY AS FINAL FANTASY XIII.

No Mahjong? No Shogi? What the hell SEGA? Neither of those games take ANY effort to translate. What do you have to translate? Purchasing the tokens? And? Is there ANYTHING else you need to translate? Did you actually think it was a good idea to take games out? Who thinks that way? What is wrong with you? You have to be the most incompetent company in video games. Remember when you didn’t suck? That was pretty awesome… I wish you could go back to not sucking again.

Don’t you see SEGA how committed and passionate we are about the Yakuza franchise. Stop the madness and make us happy, announce the hostess bars and other content as DLC.

I love that they decide to post this old interview NOW. To everyone who doesn’t know or hasn’t read everyone elses comment, THIS WAS DONE AGES AGO – BEFORE WE KNEW ABOUT THE CUTS. DoD was absolutely gutted to hear about the guts after all his efforts. Posting this interview now makes it seem that Y3′s biggest champion in the west doesn’t know/acknowledge or care about the cuts. It feels like misrepresentation, even if the feelings expressed in the interview were correct at the time it was done.

Quote ‘ (To confirm as well, the Hostesses are in the game, and you can still go on dates, Karaoke, etc, with them.) ‘
You seem to think that the fans only care about the dating stuff, what possible reason did you have to remove Mahjhong? Sure it gave me a nervewreck when I was not abe to complete a tsumo but it was one great minigame. Shogi how are you even going to explain that absents, stop thinking that we are pissed off just because of the hostess cabaret, you have cut sidemissions, minigames, music, massage parlors, club management and who knows what more. Do you really believe that saying that the dating being still there justifies sega to cut all the rest?
ANSWER TO YOUR FANS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!

Sega should really put hostesses bar as a DLC in the US release. It is upsetting a lot of fans and new customer.

Sega of America and Europe. Since the day Ryu ga Gotoku was born, the Yakuza series is/has been one of the Sega’s most stable franchise and has been able to maintain it’s splendid and totally dedicated international fanbase through very hard times up to this date. For that don’t you think that It would be such a shame and a very foolish thing to do to not release Yakuza 5 to European and US markets.
The legend of the dragon of dojima ain’t over yet so Sega, please do not commit public Seppuku for Yakuza series in the west.
If Sega west ends up doing that both Sega and Yakuza series will lose unnecessarily their face and both will not gain and continue basking in the Honor that they deserve and are already in. They will be rather judged being foolish for letting go and not trusting their selfs. Please Sega grant us our DREAM!
