Sonic 4 Spotlight: The Fan Remixes of Splash HillA little while back, we did a spotlight on some fan remixes of the Sonic 4 opening theme. With the music from Splash Hill Zone Act 1 now live on the website, it wasn’t long before the same was destined to happen for the first zone. Today, we’d like to give a spotlight to some of the really impressive renditions that are our favorites!
First up is a rock version, created by P4KOTV! You might remember him from our last spotlight, as he did a similar remix for the opening theme. Nicely done!
Next is a more classic Genesis style remix, created by geckoyamori. This one hearkens back to a much more original style, but I really like how it came out.
Our third remix was created by Tweaker from SonicRetro, and is actually one of two renditions he’s made. I got to chat with him about it yesterday, and he mentioned that while titled a CD Arrange, it also flows into more of a 90′s dance mix. Highly recommend having a listen.
Last but not least, another Genesis style rendition created by Nineko. This one is played with Green Hill Zone rolling by in the background, and it’s actually really cool how well it fits. Well done! That’s all the time we have for today’s spotlights, but we’re sure there are even more out there worthy of the attention. If you enjoyed one we haven’t shown here, please post it in the comments so other readers can have a listen! Until next time – nice work all around!

I like the first one the best. I have always thought that that style of music fits the Sonic series well. Also, it makes Sonic 4 sound like it’s an upgrade over the older classic games. I think this helps the game, since it combats the view that Sonic 4 is just the same thing as the original sonic games and outdated. This makes good use of the reputation of the older games, since it creates a similar feel for the old fans, but doesn’t alienate the people being introduced to the games for the first time.

I highly recommend his Genesis cover of the intro stage theme from “Mega Man X3,” as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUwg-n1GgOo .

dear sega,
why in the hell can’t you hire people like geckoyamori to do the music instead of the stuff you guys have going? he totally styled on you guys in the music aspect. this guy could deliver a much more enhanced version of each of those songs and would ultimately do better for bringing back the fans of the classic games. just because you put a 16 bit snare sample used in your old games doesn’t mean it sounds like the old games. you either make it sound like the old games, or do something different. the new stuff seems so dull in comparison to sonic 3, which is where these games left off, isn’t it?
do it.

Dear god SEGA – Geckoyamori’s mix is awesome, totally awesome. Really does sound more and more like Sonic 3 (imo the best music in the classic series), instead of the fairly annoying official loop you’ve got going at the moment…

@David, because geckoyamori merely changed the instruments to 16-bit. I highly doubt they can actually compose anything worth listening to. Regardless, the game is meant to combine both classic and modern aspects, which the music does quite remarkably.
@John, the point of a remix is to offer a different take on the original song. A rock remix does just that – a different take.
Not even gonna touch on classic Sonic.

The last one is definitely priceless, but 2nd version would do great to suit the modern continuation while maintaining that classic feeling.

Geckoyamori’s is awesome, its more fast paced that the original and much more suitable to sonics speed, not that I’ll be bothered if this comment falls on deaf ears because I’ll just find a mp3 of Geckoyamori’s for my usb on my xbox 360 and play it over the original when sonic 4 comes out.

Hmm – If I had to rate these from best to worst this is how I’d do it:
1) Geckoyamori’s Remix
2) Tweaker’s Original Remix
3) Nineko’s 16-bit Remix
4) Tweaker’s “CD Arrange” mix
5) Official SHZ Music
If there’s any chance at all that the official music could end up being changed before release, here’s my advice: keep the themes – change the instruments! The tunes themselves (referring here to the intro and SHZ) are fairly catchy, but the synths used sound tinny and generally bad. Either go with full retro, genesis-emulated synths (like gecko’s mix) or with modern, good sounding synths+real instruments. Don’t take the middle ground that just makes it sound like a cheesy MIDI. Even simply changing the instruments, and nothing else, would make the songs sound significantly better. (Although some variation and dynamics couldn’t hurt)
Oh and BTW, P4KOTV’s Rock Remix sounds good on its own, but I don’t think the style used really fits SHZ.

lotta ppl like gecko yamori’s mix. no wonder, he knows what he’s doing.
@Twylis, thats a very narrowminded and juvenile attitude. i’ve heard gecko yamori’s works before, and he normally does a lot more than just replace the instruments (which btw requires some knowledge of what those instruments were). he’s been part of the remixing scene for quite a while, he’s an established part of ocremix and they’ve been doing creative arrangements of game music for a long time, and many of them do professional, original works as well. i’d say gecko and other sonic fans among the ocremix remixers would be ideal for this game, if sega is trying to get the music like the old stuff.

I don`t like the idea of a HD game with retro music, so I totally think sega should go for that rock music style. I don`t think the original music fits the game.
I mean, look at New Super Mario Bros Wii, for reference. THe music resembles classic Mario, but its not MIDI-ish.
Well… I am a DJ as a part-time job, so i might do a remix also. I will make it very nice so you guys post it here! =)

My only comment here is NOT to listen to those who like the rock remix and want it in the game. (This is one time when I’m glad that the development is too far along to listen to people’s comments.) While all of the remixes (including the rock one) are good, rock music is not Sonic-like at all, and it reminds most of us of the horrible failures that were the modern 3D Sonic games (with “cool” rock music and all). I like what you have going now.
I must say that I’m very pleasantly surprised at how Sonic 4 is turning out. I checked the leaked videos, and watched most of the game in action. (For those of you who don’t like spoilers, don’t watch them, but let me do so. Saying that I’ve “ruined” the game for myself is like saying watching a full NASCAR race on TV would spoil any feeling I’d get from racing a car around a track myself.) It’s better than I could have ever hoped – at least since the time I was disappointed by the promotional video with the 2-second clip of gameplay. Maybe Sega doesn’t like these leaks, but these leaks are precisely what made me just realize that Sonic 4 will be a must-buy game for me.
I’ve now seen Sonic 4, and it is classic Sonic (though, no, not with pure black pupils). I have my problems with Sonic 3 and Knuckles (Sonic is not really the main star – Knuckles is, and Sonic is underpowered. His 3D look at the beginning of the game is sickening. He looks too cute. The stages are so long as to be boring and frustrating – 3 smaller acts are better than 2 larger acts). It was still a classic game, but I think that after all 3 parts of Sonic 4 come out, this will be a better one…making it the best Sonic game in – say it with me – more than 16 years! Even if others don’t have the problems with S3&K that I have, it’s hard to not admit that this will be at least the best Sonic game since that game.

They’re all really good! Have to say I liked Nineko’s and P4KOTV’s versions the best though. Any chances of some download links becoming available? lol
@Philippe: Dude, Wikipedia. Seriously.
What’s the rush? I didn’t even find out about the leaks until just recently, so everything’s still pretty new to me. Now what’s that called? Preoccupying your time with other things. There’s plenty of things to obsess and discuss over until the next update happens. Just chill. If anything this is a GOOD sign because they’re actually taking this release seriously and realize the importance of this game succeeding. I betcha we won’t see another thing until E3, which is the way it should be.

Desire: first of all, thanks for the kind words
I can’t speak for P4KOTV, but you can find a download link for my version in the video description of my video, just click on “watch on youtube” and you should be able to find it. I’d post the link here, but I’m not sure about the rules of this blog, and it might be considered spam. Thanks for your understanding.

Kotaku got some leaked video from Mad Gear Zone. Sadly, it’s some guy sucking at it like the rest of the videos that are being leaked. You do get to see Super Sonic so that’s cool. Super Sonic floats so generally they got his running right but Regular Sonic seems to float too. Watch how the gear moves way too fast. Alot faster than Sonic steps.
It’s also updated so you can’t see all the game play. Most of the game play…in fact, ALL of the game play is ‘fast, slam into wall, awkward platforming, fast, awkward platforming, repeat’. Maybe the game is better when you don’t suck but it looks like it’s going to be awkward platforming and only that.

In an argument to the above post about the leak, which the link will probably be deleted soon, I hope u do know SEGA that the reason all of these leaks are so is because these people are desperate for information or for any reaction from SEGA at all. I mean really sega, if u would just give us SOMETHING, i guarantee that these leaks would stop, and if u would have done more a long time ago, these leaks never would have happened.

I am so happy that this game is being released. But for the love of God please think about changing the music to a style similar to Gecko’s classic remix! SEGA needs to release information on Sonic 4 quicker, because then all us Sonic fans can give our opinions on it so therefore you guys at SEGA can make a perfect game with input from us! Thanks for reading this, if you did. xxx

I recommend you people focus on Mario Galaxy 2 and let Sonic 4 sleep in peace until E3 2010.

I love the first rock version. It reminds me of the first time I played Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast and really displays the evolution of Sonic from the 16-bit “mickey mouse” character to the bad-ass hedghog he is today.
