Resonance of Fate Battle Tutorial VideoAlright, so I’ll admit it. When I first played an early, early build of Resonance of Fate many months ago, without any introduction to the combat, I found myself a bit confused – and a bit frustrated – by how difficult the combat was. I lost and kept losing to the point of frustration, and kept wondering “What exactly am I doing wrong?” Then one day, I watched one of the Japanese tutorial videos for the game. Suddenly, the magic of hero actions and Tri-attacks, not to mention how to refill bezels, turned the game from frustrating into one of the most beautiful and strategic action-RPG’s I have ever played. Even now, I still find myself discovering new ways to play – and that makes me very happy. Today, we’d like to pass on some basic tips and pointers to all those who are curious about the game or are just looking for some basic tips. Yours truly voices the video, and I’ve even included some more tips below!
Additional TipsRefilling your bezels is the key to long battles in Resonance of Fate. There are a few ways to do this, including:
This is only the beginning. In addition, you can stack bezels that you earn – so sometimes it’s better to wait on killing an enemy in one shot, and instead destroy his front defensive barrier, then his side, then his back, and finally kill him after that – instead of simply earning one bezel back, you’ll earn four. We hope you guys find the tutorial video handy – and above all, we hope you’re having a blast with the unique goodness that is Resonance of Fate! Since videos like this are fairly new for our community team, we’d really appreciate your feedback. Let us know what you think, and if you’d like to see more in the future!

Well, since no one has said anything on the blog yet – I will. I think it is a great feature and I hope you guys make more of these in the future.
Seeing the games in action with some explanation to their inner workings always helps.

Was expecting to see pointers regarding in-battle strategy such as positioning, orders of weapons and attacks, decoy and lure tactics and whatnot.
Also, you neglected to include specialty round for certain tough fights that could’ve make life easier, hits that sends enemies airbourne, smackdowns, gauge breaking, bonus shots, stun hit, and so on which are characteristic of the battles once the pace picks up. In a sense, I felt this was more of an introductory video to the gameplay mechanics (albeit incomplete, even the in-game tutorial has them) rather than a tutorial itself (or maybe I was asking for too much).
If I heard correctly, you mentioned that handgun’s damage increases as charges increases. That would be wrong, as only machinegun does that. Handgun simply increases the probability of breaking an enemy’s HP gauge (any of its given part) so that you could replenish your bazels faster and easier (and is vital for survival later on).

A friend at work and I both got this game, but she returned it because the battle system and the Hex system were too confusing for her…I tried to convince her to press on, but…yeah. I’ll show her this and hopefully she will try it again.

Qwerty – Actually, I think that supporting our games even post-launch is really important. Just because the game has shipped doesn’t mean we should no longer talk about it. (If you disagree, Valkyria Chronicles would like to have a word with you!)
DJ - Thanks for the feedback! I saw you guys posted it up over at SEGASHIRO, so thanks also for helping get it out there.
Leehg – thanks for the comments! There’s a lot of other stuff I’d like to go into as well, but some of it will have to be saved for the players to discover. It’s not supposed to completely eclipse the in-game tutorial, but should offer some basic insight into things.
The actual quote on charging is that it “makes the attack even stronger.” Machineguns will literally do more scratch damage, but for Handguns and Grenades it affects the chance for Gauge break, etc. I can understand your point there, so I’ll try to be more specific about that in the future.
DarrenIndeed – convince her! It’s really not that difficult at all once you get the basics down, and only gets more rewarding with each step from there.

Good video and I think it’s worth clarifying that this is a good introduction for new players given the somewhat confusing start to the game. After watching this, you should have a better understanding of what your core abilities are and how to use them, so you can then go on and learn the more advanced tactics.
Having demoed this for a wide range of new players at PAX, without some hands on instruction people would walk away without a second chance. However, give someone a taste of what they can do, show them how to do it, and you’ve got someone actively interested in learning and discovering more.
Leehg- Maybe you should create that next video and show off how to pull off some more advanced moves. We’d certainly support you in your efforts!

When is there going to be a patch to fix the PS3 freezing?

The biggest problem I have in this game is refilling the bezels. I find it impossible to refill most times and if I ever do, I don’t know how I did it… If killing an enemy refills it, how are you supposed to kill someone if you can’t hit them hard enough?

@ Ruby, I think you misunderstood my point.
First off not flaming or anything (I apolgise if you thought I was trying to flame you I wasn’t) but I was referring to the timing of this video and like you said you already played an early build. I think in these 3 weeks I personally already grasped the battle as I got the game on release day (plus adding to this if I do need help there are many gaming forums on the net) so thus the timing of this video is bad. Well for me it is as if I haven’t grasped the battle by now then I think this game isn’t right for me so I would have return ed it due to frustration.
So in conclusion wouldn’t it be better to post this at the least within the one week of the game’s release? And yeah I totally agree with that you should still talk about your previous games even though it has been a while. But this doesn’t seem to be the case with the complaints addressed towards Yakuza 3. Plus while you mentioned Valkyria Chronicles the localization for a paid product is pretty below average, by this I mean it is either the translations or when you reword the translation to make sound meaningful in English. I could say the same for Yakuza 3 and also RoF (some of the humor that was in Japanese has been lost when conveyed into English). Plus speaking of Yakuza 3, it is a good example of a bad localization handled badly putting the iffy translations aside; many items associated with the cuts are rendered useless and a more significant example there are still people mentioning hostess clubs even though they aren’t there – I mean like if you are going to remove something at least make sure you do a good job.
I hope the quality of your localizations will improve in the near future (but as of now it is going no where and seems highly unlikely anything will change soon) or maybe consider other companies to do your localizations for you if you guys at Sega of America are not willing to put in the full effort into making a quality product.

This game is all about your gun customizations (and your positioning and strategies to a certain extent. It is vital to have a decently upgraded gun in order to tread effectively (barring specialty ammos of course).
With a decent gun, you’d find that depleting gauges of enemies will be cakewalk. Also utilize hero action > resonance point > tri-attack to get the most out of your bazels (and also replenish plenty of them at the same time as tri-attack is extremely powerful).
Also, gauge breaking, bonus shots and smackdown helps a lot (I didn’t even find them necessary, given how easy it is to refill bazels in this game). Utilize them.

Ruby, I’d like to see a video where you give us a straight yes/no answer as to whether the cut content from Yakuza 3 will be re-instated via patch/DLC.
It’s all very good you saying that supporting games after their release is very important, but equally important is maintaining a dialogue with the fans when they have legitimate concerns and complaints about Sega’s handling of one of its titles (as is the case with the Yakuza 3 cut content debacle).
You have maintained a complete silence on the issue since you stated that the complaints were being passed upward at Sega. Any kind of update would be warmly welcomed and would help ease the feeling that many have that Sega is just hoping to ride this out in silence and hope it all just goes away.
I appreciate that you are restricted in what you can and cannot say, but if there really is no chance of a patch/DLC happening then it would really be better for everyone if you could just come out and say it.

A simple way to start a match is to run with Zephyr first to build up scratch damage on a few targets, then break shields/gauges while advancing your hero actions. You can customize your starting characters in the menus outside of battle so he starts first too. Then make triangles, think of placement in one or two moves and maximize your tri attacks.
Additionally, look at your enemies and keep lesser foes alive until you need a bezel. In bigger fights you’ll often have a few enemies that you can dispatch in a single pass – use that to your advantage!
Lastly, if you can take an enemy out at range (such as dogs or other) without them getting to you, do it. Don’t always use hero attacks unless you absolutely need to. The challenge is often getting the most out of your bezels and actions, don’t assume you need to approach every fight the same way.

This helps, thanks! It’s always the long battles where I have problems and usually I try to take out the weaker guys 1st. Also I didn’t realize that your attack is more powerful when you charge multiple times. I’m having a much better experience in this game now, thanks!

Awesome, that makes me very happy! This exchange emulates a discussion Ruby and I had in the office following the release and I’m also enjoying the game immensely now that I have some good tactics down.

Is that battle system really that difficult for people? I think the in-game tutorial did a decent enough job of explaining the battle system. I don’t see why people are saying it’s so hard.
