A Fond Farewell to PSU on the PC/PS2 Servers! As previously announced to our users, this past March 31st was the final day for PC/PS2 servers for Phantasy Star Universe. While we still have an excellent Xbox 360 population for the game — one we will be able to devote more time & resources to now — the closing of the PC/PS2 servers was bittersweet for me for more than one reason. First, it was through the PC/PS2 population that I was introduced to the game. That’s where I played before becoming a GM, and it’s where I first took on billing support when I worked for SEGA Customer Service. Sitting on a beach at Paracabana Coast (an in-game lobby) with a few dozen players during my first GM Support Session, I realized what a witty & thoughtful community this version of the game had. Not that Xbox 360 doesn’t, but PC/PS2 had a significantly smaller community than the Xbox 360 version of the game — sadly, one of the primary reasons it was shuttered — but that also meant it was very close-knit. Players knew each other, and there was an intimacy there that I valued. So while it was difficult & sad to say goodbye, that doesn’t mean we couldn’t make sure to go out with a bang. The last day of server operation had a full slate of plans, but what it boiled down to was spending as much time with players as I could, running the game’s missions, taking photo ops, and even performing an impromptu wedding ceremony between players (GMs, like ship captains, can marry players under their charge). We took a tour of the game’s three planets, we raced on airboards, we killed Alterazgohg one last time, and even Sonic the Hedgehog dropped by for an impromptu dance party. Mostly it was just about spending a last day with friends; many GUARDIANS have already moved to the Xbox 360 version but for many of us, this was the last time we’d see each other in this version of Gurhal. The last day had many high points — I was able to give away coins for the game’s casino. Ordinarily players are allotted a single silver coin per day, and have to win more than that if they want to get the items available for purchase. Seeing as it was the proverbial end-of-the-world, I was able to give away around 900 gold coins (in other words, 90,000 times the daily allotment) to throngs of people. This lead to some excellent moments at the Casino: I was able to run a high experience / high drop-rate “rare mission” with Momonpso (that’s me with her below), one of our forum moderators and a player who has been with us since Phantasy Star Online. I got a chance to play one of my personal favorite missions, SEED Express, one last time, and of course it was a blast to see people betting hundreds of gold coins at a time in the casino. I even had a chance for what was seemed to be an impromptu staring contest at the Holtes City juice bar (also pictured below — the enormous rainbow rappy was not technically part of the staring contest, but was a welcomed part of the decor nonetheless). Aside from gleeful expressions of unbridled end-of-the-world greed, however, the last day was mostly about taking time to enjoy the environments and missions that players have loved through the past few years. The very last mission I ran was Dark God — in the story missions for the game, it is the final mission, and it seemed liked an appropriate note to go out on. I actually ran it twice — once, where we achieved victory over the game’s chief villain, the SEED . . . and a second time, where we were defeated and laid waste by Dark Falz, the boss monster at the heart of the dark planet Rykros (and one of the main villains from the very first Phantasy Star game in 1987). In the end, we all gathered at the Falz Memoria lobby, a grassy area replete with a monument commemorating the battle with the aforementioned Dark God. I know not everyone was there, of course — I’m sure some people sought out quiet corners alone, or out-of-the-way lobbies with small groups as friends. This was about finding a way to say goodbye to a community & a server population that we’ve all shared memories with, and both Ruby Eclipse and Clumsyorchid (Clumsy has the distinction of being one of the original GMs for this game) were there as well. In the closing 20 minutes we all put up banners thanking the servers — a heartfelt thanks, to be sure, because for all of us on the Community team here this has been a true labor of love. There’s more to look forward to for Phantasy Star, and there will be more to talk about soon. This is a bittersweet article to write but there’s no way I could not give a salute & shout out to the PC/PS2 community — to paraphrase the final message banner we put up before server shutdown, We will meet again!

Got me a little teary-eyed there for a second. I remember fist jumping onto PSU several years ago. I was cold and naked (due to selling my clothes immediately on accident.) wandering the alleys of Parum all alone. Until some members of a makeshift CCC clan saw me and gave me some money for clothes. I stuck with this knit of players from day one til the very end. Or the years we gained so many friends and lost several along the way. Regardless I’ve made some life-long friends Just s I had when I had first jumped into PSO. And I plan to do so again on the next major Phantasy Star title. Indeed, we shall meet again.

I had a hard time enjoying this game, being a past player of PSO and generally disappointed by the presentation.
But, when I read about the server’s closure, it hit close to home – and I remembered that, this is Phantasy Star, a community more closely bound than most other game series because of its relative unknown-ness in the market.
Phantasy Star Online and Universe alike left memories of great companionship in an environment infested with those who would use their anonymity to hurt, and those I will never forget.
While the 360 servers may still be up, I don’t intend on picking up a copy unless they bring the currently Japanese exclusive content stateside. Nonetheless, praise ye all, Hunters and GUARDIANS together.

If i was Sega, I would separate Phantasy Star into two series- offline single player traditional story-driven JRPG… Phantasy Star V, complete with high quality anime cutscenes in the spirit of the original series. Then, have a completely separate PS Online series… A new MMO with 2010 standards but in the spirit of the original PSO on Dreamcast.

@Mikey I think a lot of SEGA fans would love to see the series split in such a fashion

I’ve never played PSU in online mode. I’ve only played offline story but I guess the online mode has been interesting.

Please roll on the next Phantasy Star, on console, in HD… Take the best of PSU and PSO… add a lot more content, bring back guilds/points etc… Battle mode and Challenge mode.
Also take some ques from Monster Hunter… that series is the best PSO clone yet!

It’s always hard to say goodbye. It was hard on Dreamcast. It was hard on original Xbox, PC: Blue Burst. Now it’s PS2. I will miss ya’ll. Till we meet again!
*waves goodbye*

Been a player for two years and man, I will miss this game a lot.
If the shut down was for the best, then it’s worth shutting down.
What a bitter taste of that…

They should release PSO Episode I & II on the Playstation Network. No Phantasy Star 0 gimmicks, pretty much the exact same game on the Gamecube and Xbox (NOTICE that wasn’t a PS2 version ): sucks). Offline 4 player Multiplayer with the ability to move characters to external media to play at another friends house and Online 4 Player Multiplayer.
Maybe patch in Blue Burst as DLC in the future but I just want PSO Episode I & II mainly. Sony players missed out on this an I’m sure many PS2 PSU fans will move to a PS3 PSO game. We deserve it!

I got started playing PSU a while after first released and having problems with disc’s working and since not making the actually disc’s anymore, well how can i play? I already bought 3 different games to try and see if that would work, also any other game i try for my 360 works first try so leads me to think that people won’t play the game even if they wanted too. LMAO so, maybe make the game downloadable to HD and then problem solved!!! more people could buy online and play then so population of 360 would increase off just that option!!!

I spent good money and time on this game. If they can’t offer account server transfer they should have at least gave ps2/pc players something like free play for a year or something like that if they move on to the 360.
I actually don’t know how long the 360 version will last. I was thinking about restarting on 360 but now I think I will just wait until they release a new game. This game was the best MMO i’ve played and now I am sad. I am also mad at myself for now knowing about the server closure and not logging on for the last day.
In future versions there are some features I would like
* indicates a need
1. Offline Multiplayer for 2 people splitscreen.
2. A guild system.
*3. Weapon Customization.
4. Improved Character Customization.
*5. Updated Graphics. (obviously)
*6. Easier to understand gameplay for new players.
7. Better house system.
8. Better player shop system.
9. Better MAG system.
*10. New Objectives in missions instead of continually killing to get somewhere.
