Dreamcast Makes a Digital Return! It’s still thinking: Two of the games released on SEGA’s last home console system, the Dreamcast, are making a triumphant return to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network! Coming later this year, the debut digital release will be Sonic Adventure, followed by the wild-driving zaniness of Crazy Taxi. If you lived & loved Dreamcast a decade ago, now is your chance to relive some of your favorites — and if you never owned one, you can now dive right in and experience some of the most creative and compelling games to show up on the system. Sonic Adventure will arrive in the Fall of 2010. This game marked Sonic’s debut on a sixth generation console system, and features multiple playable characters in a 3D world, super-fast Sonic gameplay, and of course, the ever-popular Chao Gardens. Sonic Adventure‘s release on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network will mark the 11th anniversary of the Dreamcast’s release. Crazy Taxi, meanwhile, provides the kind of wild arcade-powered fun that felt perfectly at home on the Dreamcast: the game’s title is as apt as can be, as the player pilots a taxi cab around a fully-realized city modeled after San Francisco, complete with plenty of steep hills to send your taxi airborn as you cart terrified passengers to their destination (or wherever you feel like taking them). But maybe a bigger story than these two games coming out is just the fact that Dreamcast is here again. While SEGA has brought back and highlighted some of the amazing games from its Master System and Genesis era, this is the first time in years that the Dreamcast era of SEGA history has been brought to the forefront. “The Dreamcast is fondly remembered by a large community of dedicated fans as a console that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, quality and online gaming” commented Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “There are few things that are more requested from us than making Dreamcast classics available for download in today’s digital market place. We’re very excited to begin offering gamers our beloved Dreamcast titles again on the current console systems.” Each game is based on the original Dreamcast incarnation, featuring all of the gameplay that older players fell in love with. The games incorporate all-new enhancements and features such as high resolution visuals and surround sound. There will also be online leader boards, allowing players to compare their skills with friends across the world! In addition to this, all-new Achievement and Trophy integration will be available for each game released. Launched on September 9, 1999, the SEGA Dreamcast was ahead of its time — critically acclaimed and still loved by fans, the system featured such innovations as being the first console to have online gaming, and even had the capability to run a web browser. Both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be playable at this year’s E3 as well, so check them out there or stay tuned for more news — and give a big ‘welcome back’ the Dreamcast!

I have a question, recently on the ESRB website, not only was Sonic Adventure listed for a PS3 and XBox360 version, but also for the PC. I’m just wondering if the information on the ESRB is fake, or will it actually be released for the PC, for example through Steam?

Thanks for sharing us this wonderfull news! Sonic Adventure is one of the best sonic 3d games ever, one of the best games in my opinion.
I think this is a great step done by Sega and i’m sure many people would love to buy those wonderfull sega games. However, I have to say that i’m looking forward to hear if Sonic Adventure 2 will be released at some time, that would really bring one of my dreams come true (since the dreamcast died on me).
Oh, and Crazy Taxi is amazing too, not to forget… Now if I only knew what game to play first. Sonic 4 or adventure or Crazy Taxi!

Yeah, I can’t wait to earn some craazy money! I still play on my Dreamcast to this day. It would be neat if for the PSN release you allow the Dreamcast game to be transferred to the PSP like the PSone games.
Let me be the first to ask,
Have you seen any sailors?

This is GREAT news! My Sonic Adventure disc somehow got scratched a few years back and I was sad I couldn’t relive that classic first level where you run away from the whale on the collapsing pier. But now I can. Woohoo!
How much cooler would this have been if they released these DC games on 09/09/09 though?? And re-release both Space Channel 5 games please, I need some Ulala-love.

klaw, shut up. If they’re “living ON you past” (which is a grammatical cluster-F of incorrectness), then so is every other company that’s released anything from its library in this manner.
Go troll somewhere else.

Will be downloading Crazy Taxi, but have both Adventure titles on the Gamecube so probably wont be getting Sonic.
Any bets Shemnue will be your next export. No point remaking Metropolis Street Racer, seeing that’s basically what Project Gotham is.

I’m thinking of all the possible games that could be added………Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue (I have it, but people still need to get it), Space Channel 5, Chuchu Rocket, Spike Cannon, SF3, Project Justice, Power Stone 1 & 2, Sonic Adventure 2, Daytona USA 2001, Grandia 2, Bangai-O, Code: Veronica, Capcom Vs. SNK, Dynamite Cop 1 & 2, Illbleed, MvC, Plazma Sword, Samba De Amigo (somehow), Skies of Arcadia, Tech Romancer, Typing of the Dead (that would be amazing)………& to think, I just ordered a 360 on the 7th! What a great time to own a 360!

Come on SEGA, re-release Phantasy Star Online. Sony players never experienced it on thier consoles. But re-do Phantasy Star Online Ep. I & II since it just has soooo much more to offer. I have been waiting to sink my teeth back into this game since the Gamecube server went down. Again Sony missed out on all of the PSO EP I & II goodness….maybe Sony will want that as their exclusive. But still, I would buy them on both anyway!

What I’m wondering is whether the XBLA/PSN versions of Crazy Taxi will have the real life locations and Bad Religion/Offspring songs the original DC version had. Not only are some of the corporate logos (such as the KFC one) obsolete, but it would seem to me that, by now, Sega has lost the rights to several of them. They could still get the Offspring/BR songs, though (and, interestingly, that’d probably be the first time popular music was ever heard in a downloadable game on any console).

Higher-res graphics?! w00t! The Dreamcast was WAY ahead of its time with its forward-thinking network support and easy (and GORGEOUS) VGA support. The overhyped PlayStation 2 only got network support much later, and scarcely any PS2 games supported 480p. The Dreamcast’s defeat was a tragic triumph of hype over technology.
Finally, please bring back “Shenmue” and “Shenmue II,” please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried sending this letter today but it failed, then i saw this. Please read the letter…
Dear Sega,
I went to the chao laboratory website . Then I noticed there were
no updates since 2004. I thought maybe it was because no one played
it. I love Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and i still play it. I would like
to request to chao’s and sega to put a new game for game systems that
is Sonic adventure XD. Dexter’s Cut and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle as a
combo pack game for the latest systems. There would be the chao lobby
but this time the areas from sonic adventure XD would have portals to
them in the lobby. I think may be those areas are unlock able trough
the Sonic Adventure XD game. Now I would like the story-line to be the
same, but the only thing that changes is the graphics and the ability
to go to the chao garden anytime you want in sonic adventure XD. Now
there could also be an area for mini games. So on the main menu there
are three options. Sonic XD, Sonic 2 Battle, and mini-games. Now in
the mini-games you start off with just Sonic, Amy, Tails, and
Knuckles. Although you can unlock characters like shadow, rouge,
omega, and others by completing all there levels/ story-lines. This
game could also connect to wifi so you can have things like chao
karate, chao race, 2-4 player battles, and other mini-games played
with other people or friends. I love the 3D green hill zone level and
how there are costumes for the characters. I would like it if you
could play levels with characters not in the story line. So for
instance shadow could play Sonic’s levels. Playing 2 player in the
chao garden could be fun. Now I know, the upgrades. Now I thought it
could be gray shaded and omochao could fly up and say, “Sorry, only
(One of the sonic characters name) can get this upgrade.” I loved how
in sonic adventure XD you moved through a city finding levels. Now I
thought what the gameplay would be is instead of all the same the game
could have the ability to go other places like in Sonic XD but the
levels to be like Sonic adventure 2 Battle levels. the grading system
would be the same so you could get costumes for each characters if you
got all rank A’s on every mission. Since Sonic, Shadow, Tails, Dr.
Eggman, Knuckles, and Rouge already had costumes theirs would stay the
same. Omega would then now be classified as The machines like tails
and Dr. Eggman. Big the Cat would be Classified with Omega too. Thank
you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Jack Vanden Hoek.

@ezodagrom
You are right, PSO Blue Burst would be great. But I didn’t play it much so it wasn’t at the forefront of my mind, I did enjoyed the new locals that game had. I just need my PSO fix, my main focus is PSO EP I & II because I need to finally beat Olga Flow on Ultimate Mode….darn memory card kept corrupting everytime I got close to being strong enough.
Anyway here is a list of features that I feel MUST be in the game:
- 4-player split screen offline multiplayer (too many games neglect this but this was, for a lot of players, the essence of the Gamecube version)
- Widescreen Support
- Online Voice Chat
- Keyboard Support
- Character Transfer Via Storage Media (so that players can take their characters over a friend’s house)
A list of things to CONSIDER for the game:
- 2-player split screen online
- a vertical split screen or diamond view for 2 player offline multiplayer
- Ability to remap shoulder buttons (we don’t need 2-3 pause/menu buttons)
-Ability to backup characters on the Server (I know this could pose some problems but I mean only character data not the weapons, items, money, etc. Possibly up to 4 characters per Hunter’s License)
- Ability for multiple gamesaves (allowing players to experience all characters if they wish)
- Ability to share one Hunter’s License for 3 platforms (allowing those who buy both a 360 copy and a PS3 copy, and possibly a PC copy, a chance to only pay for one fee a month. Maybe $8.99 a month for one platform, $11.99 a month for two platforms and $14.99 a month for three platforms)
- FREE ONLINE WOULD BE BETTER
- Cross Platform Play (lol, no pressure on this one)
- Remote Play for PS3

Oh glob, too bad Dreamcast games aren’t coming to the Virtual Console, since I have no real reason to get a 360 or PS3.
…well, I did have a 360, but I didn’t care for it. Maybe because I had to either pay $100 for a wireless adapter or run a cord from my room, across the hall, into another room in order to get internet capabilities on it, and I don’t think I wanted to do either of those.
Of course, for the record, Gamecube games work on the Wii, and they were both released for the Gamecube, so it’s a possibly moot point. Not sure how available Gamecube games are (hint: entirely unavailable).

Sonic Adventure was fantastic, but Crazy Taxi, as fun as it seemed at the time, just doesn’t hold up that well. The single town and repetitiousness of the task is grating, especially when we’ve all been spoiled by lots of games that do the “wild driving” schtick better, like the Burnout titles.
