Sonic 4 Birthday Contest – Honorable Mentions, Part I

We were sitting there, watching all the entries on the big screen in the meeting room when we realized it: there were too many good entries.

Knowing that only ten could advance, it was hard because we liked far more than just ten. And so, to give some love to those videos that we really enjoyed, but who might not be in the top ten, we have some additional Honorable Mentions that we’d like to spotlight here on the blogs. There are far too many for a single blog post, so we’ve divided them up into different parts.

This is the first in our series of honorable mentions – we hope you guys will enjoy them as much as we did. : )

Honorable Mentions – Part I

19 Years – A Sonic Q&A

A great, animated entry with some awesome old school humor. One of our favorites here at Sega of America! The ending was also a great touch.

West Coast Madness

A great entry that mixed creativity, effort, and some fantastic public involvement. Hearing the little kids chant “Go Sonic!” is pretty awesome.

Reach the Goal

This entry scored extremely high on creativity. Not only did this guy create his own original song, but he also wrote his own lyrics and had the courage to sing them. A great example of an entry that is both original and required a lot of effort. Awesome work!

Sonicola

So, this one gets props first off for the awesome PSO poster in the background. And then we watched the rest, and saw his giant pop cap created Sonic shoe, and the dark satire going on in the background. Good stuff!

True Blue Passion

One of the first early entries we got in that made us really happy. This documentary showcases both the history of a fan with Sonic, his love for Sonic throughout the years, and ends on a note that’ll make you smile.

Sonic through the ages

Not what you’re expecting – and partially great because of it. This one caught us off guard and had our judges laughing with each new picture, up until it wowed them at the end. Another great submission.

Sonic’s Milk Time

An entertaining and well-animated entry with some fun jabs at certain lines from the past, all spoofed around a rugrats episode. Definitely worth watching. (Ha Ha, Teamwork!)

I saw it news

Another documentary style entry focused around the passion of one Sonic fan, as seen in a news story. Pretty awesome, and the humor (his mom leaning completely out of the blurred face section) was also very well done. The ending – and Dreamcast in the shot – also got some appreciation on our end.

Sonic Cheesecake

…What? I really like Cheesecake.

Dreaming of Sonic

This guy has a Sonic tattoo – and a Sonic costume. He mixed that with a great, creative video that actually scored quite highly by our judges. A great mix of public involvement, too! We could almost picture that last scene as the surprise ending to some horror movie, but the locales, the presentation – and of course, the tattoo – prove that this guy is far beyond your average fan. Props to his family as well; it sounds like they’re pretty awesome!

Green Hill Zone!

Hey, we know that guy! A familiar face from Comic-con sent in this masterpiece, and while the video didn’t have much in the way of music or dramatic shots, we were extremely impressed by what we saw: a huge replica cutout of Green Hill Zone – the biggest and probably one of the best we’ve ever seen.

Now that you’ve seen the awesome inherent within the above videos, let’s give them all a nice round of congrats and recognition for the hard work they put in. Stay tuned for Part II, where we’ll feature even more videos that deserve some great love from the community.

We’ll start things off, and we hope you guys will mirror us in the comments – great work, to all of you!

Vanquish – Voice and Voice Acting

Today is a good day for voice acting news with our newest blog from PlatinumGames regarding voice acting in Vanquish. Read on for the second blog from Shinji Mikami:

——————————
Hello everyone, time for my second blog.

I’m actually not even sure how many of these I have to write…

Anyways, I’ll give it my best shot.

In Vanquish, each territory will have all the voice played in the appropriate language in real-time, so when you are in battle with your enemies, you don’t need to worry about reading subtitles.

When I’m working through a Western game, even one I really enjoy, I don’t have that great a grasp on what is going on and has left me with some unpleasant experiences. (This mainly only happens with shooters though…)

I also wanted to share with you one of my favorite voices in the game. I’m really hooked on the English voice for our main character, Sam. He is voiced by an actor named Gideon Emery. He has an incredible smoldering quality to his voice that I find really cool. I hope you all get a chance to listen to his performance.

And don’t worry, we have Japanese voice in as well.

Out of the Mouths of Hedgehogs

At the weekend, Kevin Eva happened to suggest today we’d have some news that would have an impact on Sonic. Now many of you have come up with your own guesses as to what this might be – some intriguing, some extravagant and some downright bizarre.

“Chip’s going to have his own series!”

“Eggman’s going to die of old age!”

“They’re patching Sonic 06!”

“Knuckles Chaotix 2!” – Wait, seriously?

So what’s the deal? Well, in terms of the Sonic Community its one of your traditional hot topics of discussion, in fact the last time this type of change occurred you talked about it until… actually what are we saying, you’re STILL arguing about it. So have you guessed yet? It’s all change with the Sonic voice actors! That’s right just about EVERYBODY in the ‘active’ cast has a new voice actor and Kevin was actually part of the team who helped select them.

It was a very surreal experience, just a pity he didn’t know about the actual auditions, as he would have SO thrown his hat in for Jet and the Chaotix.

Of course you might not actually hear them all for a while, but you certainly will for those characters that will be used in Sonic Colours and of course Sonic Free Riders. In terms of Sonic Colours however you have three to concern yourself with: Sonic, Tails and Dr. Eggman – and in one regard some things have not changed. So here’s a bit of background on the new vocal lineup:

SONIC – Roger Craig Smith

Roger is donning the red sneakers as your new voice actor for Sonic.

Sonic is not the first big name character for Roger’s to voice either; he is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Chris Redfield in Resident Evil 5, he voiced Ezio Auditore da Firenze in Assassin’s Creed 2 and tortured protagonist Siegfried Schtauffen in Soulcalibur IV. Anime and manga fans will also recognise Roger’s vocal talents from the Naruto series where he voiced the character Deidara and from Bleach where he leant his voice to both Shinji Hirako and Noba/Nova.

He’s no stranger to SEGA fans either- though you might not know it.

In the last couple of years he’s been heard in Valkyria Chronicles where he voiced Ted Ustinov, Vyse Inglebard, Johann Oswald Wisen and other additional voices. In MADWORLD where he specifically voiced the Greys, the younger son of “The Masters” and more. In Resonance Of Fate he was the voice of the Barman and going back a bit further Roger also voiced several of the passengers in Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars for the PSP.

We welcome Roger to this exciting new role as the fastest thing alive!

TAILS – Kate Higgins

I think it’d be fair to say that in Kate Higgins, we’ve got a potentially great vocalisation for Tails. I was VERY pleased she was chosen. The name may not be familiar but once more you have heard her in SEGA games – again Valkyria Chronicles (Cordelia gi Randgriz, Martha Lipponen, Freesia York) and MADWORLD (Naomi / RinRin).

Perhaps her biggest voice acting role though is as the English voice of the character Sakura Haruno in Naruto. But voice acting isn’t the only significant string to her bow.

Kate is a very accomplished jazz pianist and singer and has produced five albums – in fact why not have a listen to one of her tracks now? We really like this track personally.

DR. EGGMAN – Mike Pollock

We’re pleased to say the awesome Mike Pollock will be staying on as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, Mike has been voicing Sonic’s arch-nemesis since 2005 and the untimely passing of the late Deem Bristow. Mike has in the five years contributed to an impressive array of Sonic titles as well as voicing Dr. Eggman through Sonic X – in fact he could well be the most prolific voice actor ever to be attributed to the series.

He’s also worked on TMNT, Bleach, Yu-Gi-Oh! and in a fact I didn’t know until recently is the Narrator on the Pokémon cartoon series. Now every time you see it you’ll think of Dr. Eggman delivering the lines!

There you have it, the key trinity of characters. Let the discussions begin!
