Welcome to Day 2 of the Community Blitz!
Today we’re diving into the second key element that made the first Valkyria Chronicles so epic, and stands to do the same with Valkyria Chronicles 2: The Characters!
Valkyria Chronicles II Community BLiTZ – Day II: The Characters
I know exactly what a lot of you probably thought when you first saw the game, because it’s exactly what I was thinking:
The answer, after investing many hours into the game, is a solid and resounding: Worry not. As much as the setting may be at an academy, and though some of the characters may appear shallow at first glance, the truth is that many in the original game did, too. (Hi, Edy!)
But just like with Edy, all of these characters have a rich, detailed story that makes them more than just a faceless number in the squad. Just like the first game, you’ll find yourself connecting subtly during each mission, cheering when your squad members dodge a burst of incoming bullets or when they nail that one final headshot you need to complete the mission.
For example, take another look at picture above. Rene, on the left, has amazing athletic abilities and is a lancer of impressive stamina. Reiner, the tall guy behind her, grew up in a town rich with ragnite, making his home a prime target for battles. One such skirmish cost him one of his best friends, driving him to apply at the academy and train himself daily to put an end to the war. Back home, he made a promise with another friend who stayed to fight for peace in Gallia, so they could protect their town, each in their own way.
Joachim, the guy with the hat, is an armored tech who comes off as completely air-headed, but might actually be a little smarter than he looks – or just especially lucky. And Nichol, on the far right, is a quiet kid who is constantly criticized by his sister – often publicly – to do better, which has turned him into a quiet recluse. But even he has impressive untapped potential for those who are willing to get to know him.
As you use characters more, unique dialogues will open up across campus. These are all completely optional, so if you find yourself wanting to just go straight to the next mission, you’re totally free to – but if you’d like to get to know your favorite characters more, you can follow their stories, all of which will eventually build into a special climax that will strengthen your relationship with that character and unlock new abilities for them. It’s a great positive loop that rewards you for getting to know the characters you like the best, and is a brilliant step up from the first game.
Not everyone gets along in Valkyria Chronicles II. And that’s exactly how it should be.
For reference, here are some of my favorite characters – I’m sure many lists will vary, but if you’re ever curious about which characters are good to start with, these are some of my recommendations:
Today’s special thanks
This time, we’d like to give some thanks to the guys over at SEGASHIRO for supporting Valkyria through thick and thin, and for constantly being there to let others know just how awesome the series is.
Plus, Segata Sanshiro is just awesome. You just can’t go wrong with a site based around him. As thanks for all their hard work, keep an eye on their site for special DLC code giveaways soon!
Community BLiTZ – Giveaway #2: Figurines!
We’re on the subject of characters, so we might as well let that flow into our giveaway, right? Up for grabs today we have three special Valkyria Chronicles figurines, each with a random character from the first game! If you’d like, you can also request a specific character from the list, which I’ll try to get for you. The list includes:
The first of these will be given away to the fifteenth person to comment on this blog with the correct answer to this trivia question:
Q: What is the name of the new class type in Valkyria Chronicles II? (Hint: this class is a mix of melee combat and landmine/cover support.)
Good luck everyone!
With the story and characters down, it’s time to explore what this entire Community initiative is named after – the BLiTZ battle system! Join us as we explore the changes, improvements, and all things in between to the combat of Valkyria Chronicles II.
We’ll see you then!
