This is very welcome news! I am very excited about this game. Thought there are definitely some things I wish were more like the classic Genesis/Megadrive Sonic games (namely the game’s physics engine), these changes that you just announced sound really great and appear to be a good example of Sega making little changes that will please the hardcore classic Sonic fanbase. I can’t wait to find out when the release date is. Will all of that information be in the Update Blog Part 2.0? I was kind of confused by your wording. It sort of sounded like there will be two separate Sonic 4 updates but I am not sure. Thanks for the update!

I love those changes. I was not aware you did not progress through to the next act automatically. VERY glad to see that is now possible. Too bad the act clear theme isn’t the one from Sonic 1&2. Kinda tired of the Sonic 3 one.

Really, really cool news! Thank you SEGA. Now, llwe need is to scrap the auto uncurling, and everything should be A-OK. Remember, Green hill zone, act 1, when you go throug the two tunnels and jump high in the sky – in a ball – and you had to delicately and precicely move Sonic so he hits the badnicks, so he can stay in the air longer, thus getting more rings, then hearing the 1-UP jingle? Omg, I need to relive this moment like it was the first time.. Only Sonic 4 can do this for me….

I’m guesing with this “whoosh” feature implemented, the act transitions won’t be as fluid as those in Sonic 3 & Knuckles but more like Sonic 1/2?
I really liked that connection, where you finish one act is where the next act would begin. It held the game together, felt like you were actually traversing Angel Island on a big adventure as opposed to just changing level.

Also I liked jumping around while my score was being totted up!

But it’s nice to hear about a new World Map, an option to continue to the next acts/zones w/o heading to level select, and running off the screen. But I’m shocked that Sega HQ were very reluctant to add that last part in. Really, if Sonic Team / Dimps just want to make a game that MIMICS the classics, and isn’t almost or exactly LIKE the classics, then I’m pretty sure they only slapped “the Hedgehog 4″ only for marketing reasons.

It’s like asking us to root for a bad football team… we can support the through bat times, but if we realise that the coach (SEGA) made some stupid calls in the past years (like Storybook Sonic, like Sonic ’06, like not updating Sonic adventure for PS3/X360) then, I think it is our right to complain.

Sonic’s was the best in the 90s. Now, no one can argue the fact that he’s been a simple money cow that SEGA dryed up years ago… Heck, they released more Sonic games than I can remember! Did any of these games live up to the expectation? No, they all went to the big 16$ bin at wall Mart.

Did you ever see a Mario game in this Wall mart bin? No. Because Every Mario games Ooze perfection and fun. Not so with Sonic games.

SO IF YOU WANNA YELL LIKE A CRAZY LITTLE TEEN AT A JUSTIN BIEDER CONCERT, BE MY GUEST! BUT US, REAL FANS, WILL TAKE BACK CONTROL OF OUR BELOVED SONIC. BECAUSE SONIC BECAME SOMEONE -BECAUSE- OF THE FANS.

The things I would really love you to consider would be to fix the uncurling, it really kills the momentum and I don’t want to have to rely on using the homing attack, I’d rather play like I did in the early 90s.

I just want to clarify something with you guys.

I hope you don’t think I’m one of those fans, I don’t really care for Sonic’s voice (I play the game in french) and I really don’t care for his eye colors… And the release date, I have no problems with the release date being for, oh lets say, 2013. As long as the game kicks ass. Theses are cosmetic things. I only consider the core expirience, like gameplay, replay value, if there are any bugs in the game, etc. The look of the game is totally personnal.

Anyway, back to the main subject: With all the changes they are making for Sonic 4, it’s shaping up to be a great expirience. As long as the physic for Sonic is modified (he’s too floaty) and as long as the uncurling is removed. I think we’ll have a real Winner this year.

It sounds like it’s gonna be Sonic’s year! With all the cake and all!

This is a suggestion, to keep the fourth Sonic as faithful as the first three. What’s wrong with that? SEGA listened to us before, they made changes to the game already.. I agree about the uncurling and as ive said before any change that reflects the orignal 90′s game will be a good thing. The game is called sonic 4 which suggests it should follow on in style from sonic 3 and knuckles. It should be as close as possible in looks and feel and little details make a HUGE difference. The original games were hugely successful. Its a tryed and test formula… so why mess with it? It could be the differnce between 1000′s of sales and 1000,000s of sales. Might as well try to get it right first time even if that takes alittle longer. Thiers no point getting annoyed with fans who want this game made correctly. If your not picky about the quality of sonic games and just want quick 3D releases, then sonic colours is on the horrizon for you. Sonic has being going down hill for a while now and its finally time we had a true sequil in every way to sonic 3 and knuckles. If that means changing eye colour, removing the auto uncurling, putting in tails, removing the homing attack or changing the look of level objects or fonts to resemble the genesis games, then DO IT SEGA. It will make a huge difference to how much cash you will make. If its really good, the resale of this game will be assured for years to come. After all sonic 1, 2, and 3 and knuckles are STILL selling loads of copies on multible formats even today! And the games have passed into ledgend. So far you are moving in the right direction. Dont be afraid to make big steps. Sonic colours is for newer fans.. this game is for the hardcore retro fans. So continue to make it retro. Im happy to wait and wait if it means the game will be better.

By then it’ll be too late. Better to let sega know what fans want now rather that after when its to late to do something about it. Besides Sega have ASKED fans to give thier opinion so they can make possitive changes. So thiers no point swearing at people who express thier opinion because you feel thier having a go at sega. Thier not. Their helping sega by being blunt and honest about what they see instead of just sucking up. Thats why so many companies have BETA testers. Halo games have been hugely successful because Bungie have listened to thier fans. In marketing, customer feedback is very important. Sega do not want people telling them they are doing a good job if thier not. They want to know what sells. If getting rid off green eyes or uncurling sells more games now and in the fututre when the game is a classic, then dont you think it would be in Sega’s best interest to do it? If you think the game will be good no matter what, then removing green eyes or whatever wont bother you will it? But it will make a big difference to allot of other gamers.

The only thing I don’t think Sega gets is to make a classic Sonic game (unless they are aiming for classic as in the original Sonic the Hedgehog), you need Miles Prower to be playable. MAYBE Knuckles, but Tails should at least follow Sonic around and be controllable by a second player.
In my opinion.
Apart from that, I’m excited. I need the release date quickly.

Lol. i know my wish list wont be fulfilled. Thier just sugestions i think would help the game have that magical retro feel. Im not gonnah freak out if thier not included. Have any of you guys check out ‘streets of rage remake’? Its an AWSOME game. It merges the best of 1,2 and 3 but also gives you the option to customise the settings to make the game feel closer to which ever previous version was your favourate. I reacon sega should have a simerler system with sonic 4. An options menu to customise the sugestion i said before would please everybody. I only write my idea’s because sega have asked us to. I enjoy reading peoples idea’s, even if they never happen. I found the jump sfx and spindash in sonic cd very annoying.
Its only a small thing but its enought to make you think.. it’d have been so easy for the developer to simply stick with the trade marked sonic style.
That could be true of this game when its finished. Great game but stupid little annoying things.

some of the things ive seen in this game, seem to have been plucked from the fan games on sonic retro. The homing attack while fun at times, makes the game too easy.
The last level looked very simerler to the fan game robotnicks revenge. I like the look of the last level but i really would like to see a totally original last boss after the sonic 2 style one. Ya know a really epic one that scars the life out of ya!!!

I think sonic 1-3+k were so good because they were arcade style games.
You load it up and within seconds your playing and its simply level after level untill you complete it or your lives run out.
I remember this got everyone playing it in turn, even the parents.
Mario one also had the same effect on people and these games not only sold well, they sold the consoles themself!
Knights on the sega saturn was brilliant… but the new wii one was rubbish.
Why? because they added a drawnout introductucion and story, where as the original was simple… press start and play and carry on playing in an arcade style.
Wii sports has been highly succesful because of its simple arcade feel too.
The old sonics were arcade games. And i also believe that when you run out of lives you need to be punished abit… it keeps you coming back for more and makes players better.

In Sonic Colors, the square blue wisp is SOOO COOL!! I love his ability!!! God I think I’m more ecxited about Sonic Colors than Sonic 4…. Maybe Sonic Team really outdid themselfs! (I wonder if they did Sonic 4…. what it would have looked like? But hey! Dimps seems to know what tey are doing… and it looks perfect too… so!)

It’d be seriously cool if one of the levels was a big factory with machines creating all the badnicks! With conveyor belts carrying peices of unfinished badnicks.
Blueprints of all robonicks creations in the background that pay tribute to every retro sonic game including the master system ones. GREAT CAMEO’S
Captured animals in cages.
Animals being robotasized and brain washed.
Prototype badnicks and metal sonic designs (kinda like all ironmans suits on the wall side by side).
Robotnicks ship designs just laying around everywhere or parked up. Seeing the sonic 2 end game boss suit and sonic 3 bigger one stood side by side would be great.
Thier was some really cool boss designs in knuckles chaotix too.
Just jpegs in the background would be amazing!!!

i hope episode 2, 3 ect merge with episode 1 like how sonic and knuckles did with sonic 3. Allowing you to play all the levels together in one big epic adventure. Also, if tails apears in ep 2, itd be nice to think you can play ep 1s levels with tails, knuckles or who ever.

I love to see a level that rotates 45degree’s when you hit a switch, so that you have to figure out the way to the end as certail parts of level can only be accessed by rotating then rotating back again. Like being inside a giant puzzle. That would be so challenging. Abit like death egg 2 but on acid!!!

And anyway, so far, Sonic 4 and Sonic colors both look flawless, sure there are little things here and there that they could change but these are minor things. And I don’T think anything we discuss here would affect the whole expirience in either games.

Sure I would like them to remove the uncurling in Sonic4, but I’ll just have to learn to deal with it, I guess. As long as Sonic stays true to what Sonic should be;

Colorful (check!), Fast (check!), innovative, but not too much (check!), great platforming (check), cool music (check and check!)

I’m sold!

To me it looks like a 3d graphics 2d gameplay HD sonic game that simply pays some tribute to sonic 1,2 and 3 but unfortunatley isnt establishing its own adventure plot. What we seem to have is a HD recreation of greenhill, metropolis, casino night and the oringinal concept of sonic 2 death egg zone. The water one looks ok now its had a rework.
All these levels look good and look fun… but are we getting a truely new expirience?
I also think the developers are trying to merge the 2 sonic universes… the 3d fan base and the 2d old school. In some ways they seem be having trouble letting go of thier sonic rush formular.
The inclusion of the homing attack will make it much too easy.
It seems your putting it in because its in some of 3d games and its in colours.
Bzzzzzzzzz wrong!!! Seperate the two different sonic game style types and just see which sells better.
Ive played sonic 2 hacks which had homing attacks… and while fun at first, it made the game much too easy.
You would be better off having a power up that gave you this ability.
Having green eyes reflects the wrong image.
Ive noticed allot of people dont like the uncurling… and i have to agree.
Are we going to see a return of the sonic 3 shields sega???
The running animation needs to start off like hes walking and swaying abit. I know its hard to capture the feel that the artistic 2d spites gave us all those years ago but if you could pull it off, you will be marked as master workers.
I think its short sighted of any fan wanting this game out quickly at the sacrifice of timeless gameplay.
This is the first sonic game in a very long time to show real promise.
Please please please try hard to get it right sega.

Really? It never came out of america? Hmm… I got it in Canada… they should have released it all over the world… sad…

It was AWESOME!! It had a lot of things current mobile systems only start to have, like a video out so you can plug it directly in a tv. And it had a second controler port on it, so you could plug a second controller and play with a friend… ahhh what a system…

the bad part is that it required 6 batteries and only lasted 2 hours tops…

BUT! I could play phantasy star 4 ANYWHERE!!! Humm.. I mean I could play SONIC 3 ANYWHERE!!!

sega ok, today I watched the clip of street casino zone. I only have a few things to say.

I’m still very sad because physical fa not be exactly equal to the era Genesis.

but I got compliments on the street casino! definitely congratulations.

why this is the spirit of the era Genesis! and casino street revealed the clip reflects well what a player playing sonic since 1991 would like to see.

I’m 28 years old and play sonic since 1991.

always loved sonic and even here in Brazil came to play for a while the beta versions of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 was the genesis!

Today I’m graduating from college for graphic designer and proudly admits that the sonic games always inspired me in my projects.

this is the spirit of game I like to see.

and today with all the pride I have to tell them:

Wow, I’m excited too, but jeez some of you are the most insane people I’ve ever seen use a keyboard. I’m almost to the point where I’m OVER the uncurling thing… the little cosmetic stuff (green eyes, etc) never bothered me (I understand WHY the eyes bother a third of you here, I’m just saying they don’t bother me).

I’m just gonna wait and see. I’m not gonna do what everyone else has done, and watch Youtube videos of THE WHOLE GAME before it’s even out. Though, from what I hear, everything is recycled, so not much is going to “surprise” me.

Last night i downloaded the demo to give it a second chance… i completed the 1st level by just pushing forward and using the homing attack.

seems kacey… that you have missed the point.
trusting sega???? they have produced some very lazy sonic games recently..
they have asked us to give our opinions to help them not to make another terrible sonic game.
So here we are letting them know what we dont like.
Its not hanging onto the past and its not being cruel to sega either.
Were being honest.
If they listen to us they stand to make ALLOT more money.
Seriously… were not gonnah hurt thier feelings by telling them we think thier 3D sonic model or animation sucks.

Oh sega… ive played the beta… allot ofpeople dont like how when you stop pushing forward sonic just stops dead. feels wrong.

I’ve been following the progress on this game since the beginning and I’m really impressed with the changes so far. One thing has always bugged me though. Why does Sonic uncurl when in the air? I kind of get that it’s to encourage the homing attack but nothing’s more satisfying than coming off a ramp and bouncing on a couple of badniks. Anyway, keep up the good work guys!

It truly fills my heart with joy to see you guys working so hard to make this game the best it can be ^-^. I =loved= shooting past the stage at the end and spinning that sign so hard you’d swear it’d fly off it’s hinges like it did in Sonic 3 lol. With every update I get more and more excited for the game. To some these changes may not mean much, but to older gamers like myself this makes all the difference. I’m glad you’re taking into consideration the old along with the new, and really listening to the fans.

hmm I just noticed this other convo going on.. agree with what #248 says. I consider myself pretty loyal to Sega (I’m still pretty bummed they don’t make their own system anymore..) but as Ronny said, we’re doing them a better service by being honest and telling them what we want. Supporting them after they made a game that many didn’t like, will give them the false sense that we’ll take -anything- they give us that has Sonic on it.

That’s what’s going on with final fantasy. It went from being one of the best RPG series to the most loathed because the fanbase, for the most part, takes anything with that name on it, good or bad.

We can’t let the same happen to Sonic. Sure some of our comments and suggestions may seem harsh, but if it’s for the betterment of our fave game and character, I’m sure they won’t take it as an insult, but rather as pointers to help them improve.

I never said it was stupid D=. All I said was loyalty doesn’t mean giving them a soft hand when they mess up. Loyalty to me is, when they make a mistake, we let them know, and then they take the lengths to fix as they are now. And suggesting ideas and such is -exactly- what everyone is doing. I’m afraid I can’t agree with “praising” them though when they mess up. I’ve been a Sega fan since I got my hands on a Genesis 16 years ago (oi showing my age XD *blush* lol) and to this day, I still hope for the best. But I’m not going to say “good job you guys” if the game was badly done. Instead I’ll say “hey guys, this didn’t work too well, let’s see how we can try again and make it better.” Far as I’ve seen, no one is outright insulting them how you’re making it seem. We’re all fans of Sega and Sonic in particular which is why we’re pushing so hard for this game to be all it can be.

If we go easy on them, we’ll just have another mediocre game on our hands, and no one wants that.

It’s gonna be a weird example ^^; but think of parents with their kids. Parents don’t yell at their kids because they’re being mean. They yell and push them because they want them to be the best person they can possibly be. If they go too easy on them, the kid will do whatever they want consequences be damned, and they turn out a mess. This game and the people working on them are “the kid” and we are the tough love “parents” who want to make sure they make it out in the world in the grandest way possible and to make as many people happy with the outcome as they possibly can.
