Not bad – DEFINITELY a step in the right direction. Still some stuff that needs cleaning up though.. When i’m running and let go of the D pad, sonic just sort of strolls to a dead stop just as fast as he does when I hold left to put on the breaks. Same thing when I jump during a run or a roll. Where’s the momentum?
Also, bring back Tails and Knuckles fer chrissakes! NOBODY ELSE!

Can a dev/blog writer please comment on the lack of classic controller support for the Wii version? It was more or less the only reason I had purchased it over my PS360 because I enjoy the CCPro so much, and was extremely dissapointed to be stuck with the Wii Remote only method of play.
Is there any chance of a patch being made to fix this?

I enjoyed this game greatly. i got it for the Wii, so my only complaint is how we can not use a Game cube controller or motionless controller, Sonic 4 would be so much better with motion controls, and the D-pad hurt and sometimes i spindashed when i was not planning to.
9.5/10
Thanks for bringing Sonic back to his roots, i can’t wait for Colors :3

THANKS SEGA!
To quite IGN, “Breath Easy Sonic Fans, Sega Got This One Right!”.
No offense meant to you guys of course.
But this seems quite much the way to go.
I expect lots of episodes.
And if need be to create a sequel, keep this style and don’t bring it back into 3D.
Nono. Don’t stop makign 3D games. Colours looks epic.
And I love ’06, despite the amount of people that hated it.
But if you’re going to somehow continue the originals story through 4 and onward maybe a tad bit more, that 2.5 D style is the perfect system.

Hey guys (and girls), take a look at this video, you should really check this out, the guy is comparing Sonic 2′s physic to Sonic 4′s physic… its pretty relvealing.
I’m sorry, but I think it’s important SEGA take a look at this video and try to understand why some of us feel a little disapointed with Sonic 4. The game clearly dosen’t have the Sonic 1,2 & 3 soul.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6-1cGzPn3E&feature=player_embedded
And please people, dont go all “AARRG!! YOU DON’T LIKE SONIC!! WE LOVE SONIC AND EVERY THING SONIC IS UNTOCHABLE!!!!”
I love Sonic, in fact I loved Sonic the moment my father got me a Genesis and I first popped Sonic 1, in 1991…. And if I am to play the successor of Sonic & Knuckles, I want to pick up the controler, and play Sonic like it played back in the days. You might say it’s because I’m oldshool and I dont want to evolve… you might be right…
But I disagree. The controls in the Genesis Sonic were perfect, why break something that works? Why break what MADE Sonic? Anyway, It’s just me thinking aloud.
Go ahead, yell at me if you think i’m totally coucou! lol

AMAZING game guys. Definitely the best Sonic game since S3&K. The level design is almost flawless. Just ONE problem. The momentum system isn’t very good. I don’t like dropping dead in my tracks as soon as I let go of the analog stick, on ground or in air. Hopefully an update is released that fixes this.

No, no, NO!
Sorry, Dimps, but you are full of it!
There is 1 group you satisfied with this little stunt of yours, and that’s the modern Sonic-fan.
The classic fan will at best go like “if you throw away the Mega-Drive Sonic, and accept the game for what it is; it’s quite good!” <—- Not a return to former glory!
Please accept this one-way ticket to a warm place, on me ^_^

It’s an awesome game, and the levels are really well done, however in my opinion the music falls flat. At a lot of points its just shallow and repetitive. I’m mostly referring to the boss music, Casino Street, and the main theme.

I was so excited about this game!!! checked all the news regularly and kept checking the PS Store today for the update every 15mins. I was even nervous once it was finished downloading!! I spent my childhood playing sonic and finally SEGA were responding to the genesis fans, but….
I’m slightly disappointed… the graphics are awesome and the menu is nice, however….
This is not a true sequel, its a remake of 4 awesome games. But unfortunately everything from the design of sonic, to the gameplay physics/feel and level design is not acceptable…
Surely 16 years of technology later, they could make a better game?? SEGA, you look like your confused between making a sequel or a retro remake. This game is shorter, has worse physics and is less fun than the original games. Where is the progress?
I am still glad SEGA decided to make this game, it is the step in the right direction, but is far from perfect.
Please make a more solid release for Episode 2. I still love sonic, but if your going back to the roots…make sure you do it with more heart.
P.S. Sonic looks stupid when he’s causally walking down the street and then starts running like crazy…did you notice realise this? He has no attitude and the animations are weak. And why is the camera so close to him?? I spent a lot of time falling in pits not having a clue whats around me!!! PLEASE SORT IT….SEGA YOU ROCKKKK!!!!! but this game needs serious work!!!

I bought the game today, and I have all 7 emeralds and stuff. I really like the game, it is actually a very good game. Glad you guys made it. However, there are some really fatal things that need to be taken care of by episode 2.
1. Momentum – When Sonic is running, it is dependent on the D-Pad. This causes him to make a full stop when the D-Pad is not held down. There is no momentum. The same thing with Jumping Momentum. If you are not holding the D-Pad in the direction you want to go, he stops in mid-air. This is a problem especially in Casino Street Zone act 2 with the card platforms. I died needlessly lots of times on this one area.
2. Difficulty Curve – I’m not saying the the game is too difficult or that the game shouldn’t be. It should be challenging, but sometimes the difficulty spikes way to high in uncertain areas. Like the aforementioned card platforms (that’s more about physics), but I think the greatest example is in Special Stage 3. Special Stage 3 is actually more difficult than Special Stage 7. The Difficulty placement in these stages are a real killer. It should Gradually get harder, not hard at random. It’s like a Trainer making you lift 50 pound dumbbells when you are only prepared for 10 pounds.
3. Future Changes I would Love to See – In episode 2, I would love to see online co-op with Sonic and tales, even local co-op, like in Sonic 2 and 3. More power ups would be nice too like S3&K.
I really do like the game, and although I haven’t beaten it yet. I know I will be playing it for a long time. Keep up the good work SEGA.

I’ll let you guys in on a little serect, if you collect all the chaos emeralds and beat the final boss, try to collect all the rings in the ending scene after the final boss for a serect event in that ending, xbox users will want to do this for an avatar award.
…and just so you know its not easy to do unless you remember where all the rings are and time jumps.

Sonic 4 is pretty good like the gameboy advance games… but it still did not get me going like the first Sega genesis and sega cd sonic games. (all but 3d blast.. that is when sonic start to go wrong..)
Or sonic adventure 1 and 2 for that matter…. (still was not as good as the sonics on genesis but For a launch game and a reboot of sonic it was not all t hat bad I have good times playing it….everything after that… Oh god I hanged on until that 2006 sonic game on xbox 360 then I gave up on sonic could not take it anymore so i did not bother paying or buying sonic unleashed.
Sonic 4 at least brought me back and the DS games was pretty good I bought those. Rush and the bioware sonic RPG.
But seriously SEGA Try to get as many people who did the old sonic games on genesis and sega cd as possible to do Key parts ( dream come true dont want to do sonic music amymore? Why did the dudes who did sonic 3/sonic cd music not do any?)
Why does the game have to be 3d and use the New sonic desgin why can there not be an option to use a 3d model of the old sonic style in sonic 4 for those that want that.
Also the game is really short for $15 $10 is plenty for that amount of content I almost did not buy it since it was short and $15.. You are sleeing this in 2 parts. $20 total for the 2 parts is plenty for a download game like this you are not getting a box, and the DS games like it are $29
BUT SERIOUSLY SEGA WHERE IS THE !6 BIT GENESIS SONIC THAT IS LIKE WHAT CAPCOM DID WITH MEGA MAN 9 AND 10 LOOKING LIKE A 8-BIT NES GAME?
(and get as much of the genesis team memebers to do work on it as possible..)

And if nobody know who dreams come true is they did the music on sonic 1 and 2 on genesis…In other words the music that is sonic..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreams_Come_True_(band)
Sonic 3′s music was done by some awsome guys too it was new style but still just as good..
Sonic 4 music Is not bad but still it did not blow me away like sonic 1, 2 ,3/ sonic& knuckles or sonic cd’s sound track…
Hell sonic adventures 1 and 2 sound track was sweet too.. sonic 4 is just average, not bad but you forget it fast..

OH ya and if you had paid for dreams come true to come back and make music for sonic 4 I think I would not be complaining about the $15 price tag since I am sure getting those guys cost some coin now, and would fork over $15 easy but you did not sega..
$15 is to much for half a sonic game that is a download with no box or disc/cart.
In the old days you paid like $49 and most of that was memory chip/box making cost, it is 2010 and a short download game $15 is going to be a huge turn off.

Great game, but some things could be improved to make Episode II even better:
- Slow start up speed for Sonic
- Camera is way too zoomed in which makes widescreen aspect useless
- After hitting an enemy with a homing attack, there is a lag when trying to use another homing attack on the next enemy.
- Stop dead in your tracks mid-air if you stop holding forward/back. It’s definitely jarring.
My biggest complaint is that I wish the control mechanics of the original games was kept for this one. I find it difficult to make my jumps precise because of how he stops dead if you let go of the control pad/analog stick, and because of the homing attack. Sometimes you go to do a homing attack, but the homing icon disappears JUST before you push the jump button and you shoot forward a bit.

Sega, I am officially asking you to give us, the fans, an explanation for why you chose to change the way Sonic is played. Not only does playing Sonic 4 feel bizzard, it seems brokens at time.
I cannot understand why you decided to change what made the first Sonics so great to begin with. Take New Mario Bros. Wii, it plays exactly like the old Mario on the nes and Snes, but still feels like a new game.
So, please, SEGA, either explain to us why the drastic change, or patch the game. You have the power to prevent the Sonic Cycle again…. the fans have spoken for over a year, asking for simple AND logical things…. why did you not listen to us? You said you were going to (finally) listen to your faithful fans.
-No uncurling
-Momentum (LIKE THE GENESIS PLEASE)
-good running animation
thats all we asked for the last year…. you delayed the game, for what? From the first trailer to now, I don’t see any difference..

Just got the avatar awards on the xbox 360, the body part of the costume is great, but the head piece wasn’t what I was expecting, in future episodes or maybe in a patch/update can the head piece of the sonic costume for the xbox 360 avatar be a full sonic head rather than sonics head with a hole in it showing the avatars face? It just looks wierd and was hopeing for a full sonic head rather than a half finished head.

I was convinced that the only reason I continuously replayed the old Sonic games was for nostalgia. I was also convinced that this would make it impossible for me to like any new Sonic games. After enjoying this game as much as any Sonic game from the Genesis, I have to say that I was completely wrong. Sonic Team you have done the impossible, thank you for bringing back Sonic.

Okay guys, you did a pretty good job with Sonic 4. I was impressed overall. Just one gamebreaker for me and a hell of a lot of customers too. The physics.
Please, and I mean pretty please, with sugar on top how about a patch for the physics system? Sonic has no sense of weight and feels a little awkward to a hell of a lot of your paying customers (some of these paying customers are most likely children whom have saved pocket money for this and are overwhelmingly disappointed).
I bought Sonic 4 last night and I was thrilled by almost everything. The music is a bit brash (not the stylish synth funk as it was originally : generic happy la-a kiddie tv music this time around it would seem) but most of all the physics are a bit lame to say the least. Top marks for everything _but_ momentum, music and the way Sonic ‘slides’ along the floor as he starts to walk.
If I could get a refund from PSN, I would have done that yesterday. I feel kinda cheated. It is a good game, but you missed the nail with the hammer. Did anyone play-test the original Sonic games before developing the new physics engine? I can see it is developed to work like it does. Unfortunately, you took the spin, roll, faster-faster, bounce, smile formula away. I can’t imagine why?
I’m hoping you release a ‘classic physics’ patch which is optional in the game settings. I hope to god. Otherwise, that’s £9.99 of my money down the pan for what is so good yet so spectacularly short of what was promised.
Classic physics patch please!

I have to agree with a lot of people here: the physics and momentum definitely need work.
I played Sonic the Hedgehog 3 the day before release to get into the mood and get my skills back to what they once were. First thing that I noticed was that Sonic seems a bit slow off the start and the momentum is gone.
Hope there’s a patch for this at some point but Sega, thanks for this nice nostalgia trip nonetheless!

I really do like the game, and although I haven’t beaten it yet. I know I will be playing it for a long time. Keep up the good work SEGA.

I agree with the above comment but I’d also like to see a return of the super emeralds and hyper sonic.
The music became slightly repetitive in my opinion and the physics are slightly off, especially the running, it felt…i don’t know :/ kinda slower than the originals.
In my personal opinion, this game is a great return to the series and I would easily give this a 9.5/10 but when making episode 2…PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!! Refer to Sonic 3 and Knuckles all the way, it is your greatest retro triumph and i would LOVE to see that game and all it’s glory with a lot more references to sonic adventure (homing attack and style of sonic) in today’s modern video games.
Thankyou SEGA for producing the best game in my eyes since Sonic Adventure 2!!!

I’ve heard some complaints about the physics & I would like to see the physics to be fixed so they’re a lot closer to the Genesis games either for a patch for Ep. I or even for future episodes. Besides have a look at this from Sonic Retro: http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_Physics_Guide
HOWEVER, does that mean Sonic 4 is bad? No. Does it mean I hate Sonic 4? No. I have plans to try & get Sonic 4 Ep. I on XBox Live& see what the game is like for myself. I want to experience the game for myself so I can see what it’s like. I was looking forward to this game for months & I saw my brother play the demo & it looks pretty good. So that means I’m going to give Sonic 4 a shot. I do like that there is more platforming (especially Casino Street Act 2 which does look awesome).
Though, Sega, I would recommend taking a look at Sonic Retro’s Physics Guide to improve the physics (to me the guys at Sonic Retro made figuring out the physics & even changing them really easy) for future Sonic games.
I also would like to see either in a possible patch for Ep.I (though I doubt it’ll happen) or for future episodes to see some/most of the speed boosters removed because from the footage I’ve seen, there was way too many speed boosters in places that were unneeded. Why need so many speed boosters when you can build up real momentum to build up super speed? I do commend you for keeping the promise to have Sonic go to full speed (aka the “spinny feet”) quicker since to us it does feel like a Genesis Sonic game & I’m looking forward to seeing that in future episodes (& maybe future Sonic games).

I’m finding the bonus stages to be incredibly frustrating and unfun. Also a little disappointed in the controls during the action stages. Feels sluggish. The game feels a little short for 15.00 too.

I really did like this game, but there are definitely some improvements required for Episode 2.
First of all, would you mind giving us any info AT ALL on Episode 2? Nothing has been mentioned yet at all.
Episode 2 needs to be longer, definitely. Also, the fact that you only had to beat the first level and then all levels were playable really ruined the game for me. The whole point of classic Sonic games was going through all the levels in order, like it was an adventure and you were actually going somewhere…
Also… WE NEED MORE CHARACTERS! Like I know you want to make it more like classic games, but having Sonic be the only playable character is not the way to go. I loved having a friend follow as Tails… So yeah, Tails and Knuckles would be nice… Heck, I wouldn’t even mind seeing Shadow just for the sake of variety

Just asking… what kind of variety would Shadow give? Tails and knuckles of course need to be in a Sonic game, because they helped build the franchise, AND they had unique abilities that contributed to expand the overalll expirience…
Now Shadow… other than being a black and angry Sonic clone… what does he do? (Being black and “cool” dosent cut it)
Anyway, just askin’!
Oh and SEGA, I’m still waiting for an answer for why Sonic 4 has bad physic.

Hello from Spain:
Well, SEGA, it looks like you have finally found the right way for Sonic. You get back to past and learnt to walk again, but now you must learn to run. Sonic 4 is a great game, but what you have to do is an excellent game. The beginning is to watch the video of #26 comment. It’s something to have in count.
The second I would do if I were you is to learn from all the episodes, and when they all get out, see what’s bad. Then, begin from the first one to the last, correcting all the errors, remaking what’s necessary and get (In DVD & Blur-Ray, please) the ultimate Sonic The Hedgehog 4.
Maybe it’s too much work. I don’t know, I’m not a game programmer. But I know that if yo make the right things, people around the world will thank you for make them live again the classic Sonic games.
As a final note, the homing attack is right, but the peephole and the decission of make the levels acording to it is bad.
You can make a even greater job, you know you can. And when if you do it, i’ll be there to watch it and thnak you.
PD: And please, another walking to run Sonic’s animation. ¡And I want Sonic becoming a ball when he jumps!

Well the game looked great but I honestly felt like I was playing Sonic Advance 4, not Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The music could use some work in some places, (Egg Station, I’m talking to you!) and although I can’t be certain, something tells me Dimps is to blame for the semi-broken physics. Just an extrapolation seeing as I don’t know the exact roll (or reason) they had for being involved with the sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The fact the hedgehog uncurls after spindashing off a ledge really annoyed me and undoubtably many other fans. The homing attack replacing the insta shield and the time limit in the special stages started to irk me after a while, but maybe I just need practice. :/
But other than those bad points this game was MUCH better than guiding a slow lumbering werehog around a lengthy stage. In the next episode however, I would suggest you assign the homing attack to a different button and let the double jump perform the insta shield again… I’m tired of getting thrown off ledges because I THINK I’m on solid ground.
I’m looking forward to seeing episode 2 and any improvements you guys can muster, just as I’m excited to see a certain villain (spoilers) to make a classic come back. And remember, put the super emeralds in episode 2 or it’s a federal offense. ;D

@Kacey: Because the Werehog stages consisted of the same jazz melee music that constantly repeated giving no variety to the levels. Those same levels were about 30 minutes long when the Sonic levels were about 8. You had to constantly collect those stupid day medals in the night levels so for the people who just wanted to play the day levels they had to put themselves through the torture of playing the button mashing 30 minute crap fest. The Werehog stages were very very long with very very stiff controls. They say adults liked the Sonic parts and children liked the Werehog parts.

game is as much of a disappointment as most classic Sonic fans expected.
Way to miss the mark once again Sega.
Don’t call it Sonic 4 if it plays worse than the games it’s supposed to succeed.
Sonic died in 1995, the closest Sega has ever been to getting it right after Sonic 3 & Knuckles was Chaotix on the 32x… and that only did poorly because nobody understood how to play it. Sonic X-Treme had promise, because the main people in charge were still concerned with maintaining the type of gameplay that made the 2D games so good in the transition to 3D… too bad xenophobic Sega of Japan didn’t like anything about its other two world region branches, much less an American group working on their franchise. (of course, if it weren’t for STI, Sonic 3 & Knuckles wouldn’t be what it is)
I think I’m done with you, Sega. If I can play Nintendo’s new Kirby game and still giggle with the same excitement and stupid amusement I had when I was 9 years old when Kirby’s Adventure launched, then you’re doing something wrong.

OK RubyEclipse, I like sonic 4 I want to Love it but I like it. here is a list I have made and beg of you guys to patch this stuff PLEASE, number one is obviously the physics. sonic can walk up and stick to walls.. and his momentum is still a bit poor. and this is really weird. Second. after working at collecting all the chaos emeralds. and hearing the “New Super sonic theme” I cringed. this song is terrible!. and annoying when playing as super sonic so a simple “invincibility song like it was originally” will suffice. seriously though I have to mute my TV. it’s a awful three or four second loop. it’s so bad. that is all i have for the complaints department. now here is some things I would like to see in the next one. #1. Be able to import sonic 4 episode 1 so I do not have to collect the chaos emeralds AGAIN. along with connecting the first game #2, More original level design i know you guys used sonic 2-3 as inspiration but come on.. and finally #3 i would rather have you guys have it like back in the day where it was one act second act ( including the boss ) the three acts then boss feel lazy to me. also this will leave more room for another act for us to enjoy or maybe a “extra act” that is absent from this one. i was expecting to have a super sonic showdown. but sadly no.. and if you guys can please get Yuji Naka. on board on this project. I mean he knows sonic more then anyone. also put him in charge of this project. if possible I seriously hope you truly are listening to the fan base because I do not want this comment to be in vain. these things seriously need to be addressed. also for the second game. and for the future of sonic himself.

Pros
The graphics and backgrounds look great – especially Lost Labrynth
Classic sound effects
Animations for full-speed running, bouding vertically from springs, uncurling, and falling look great
No more horrible “running in the air” thing
Map screen looks good and it’s nice to see all the Emeralds you have
The special stages are based on the original and improved by rotating the stage instead of controlling Sonic
The transformation to Super Sonic looks awesome
Transforming is done by a separate button so you can still jump and have complete control
Not only will Metal Sonic return, it’s the REAL Metal Sonic
Air dash is a nice addition to gain some forward momentum
Homing attack was a good idea, but… (see cons)
The old school ending with Sonic jumping into the screen was good, but Sonic’s facial expressed looked really stupid.
You can do a homing attack in the capsules after boss fights, but there needs to be a good animation for it. Like maybe stomping on and spinning off or doing a handstand or something. Something cool and impressive. Something Sonic would do.
It was good to make Sonic mute, but I’d love to see his real attitude from the cartoons shine through. I want the confident, cocky, impatient, chili dog-eating prankster that’s too cool to be intimidated by Robotnik.
Cons
The physics were all wrong and momentum barely had anything to do with the game
Sonic was way too slow
The jumping animation looked bad and was too slow
The way Sonic landed from a vertical jump looked terrible
Doing the exact same sideways flip off of springs and after every homing attack sucked
After a homing attack, you either bounced back way too far, or bounced up the exact same way. There should have been different animations and it should have been like Unleashed.
Here’s the deal with the uncurling: Most people hate it, but I actually like it because the animation looks so good. To please everyone and make the game better, we should have a choice of:
1) Keep spinning, bounce off of an Badnik and soar back up into the air like back in the day.
2) Keep spinning, press jump to uncurl, savor Sonic’s spread eagle animation while flying through the air, then either do a homing attack or and air dash to gain some forward momentum, hit the ground and take off.
Sonic’s walk looked terrible. He’s not even supposed to walk. In the old games, just tapping left or right made him start with a jog. Sonic accelerated at an agonizingly slow pace, which leads to…
There SHOULD be a boost button, or at least an old school “double tap forward on the D-pad” dash. Seriously, Sonic has the ability to run faster than the speed of SOUND, so why should he have so much trouble running up a hill? Which leads to…
There should be a wall kick to eliminate waiting for floating platforms. Waiting isn’t fast. Again, Sonic is faster than the speed of sound. He waits for NOTHING. He should wall kick and be out there in 1 second flat. Sonic Team needs to go back and watch the open cinematic for Sonic CD. Which leads to…
There should be some special attacks, such as spinning like a buzz saw and slicing through stuff like he did in the cartoons. As for people complaining about the homing attack being in the game, watch the Sonic CD intro. He actually does a homing attack.
The light speed dash would have been awesome
Knuckles and Tails have been hinted at for episode 2. If so, they shouldn’t just be yellow and red Sonic clones like in the Genesis games. They shouldn’t do spin dashes, shouldn’t curl into balls when they jump and Knuckles shouldn’t do the blurry circle feet. There should be specific levels to accommodate their skills, such as Knuckles breaking though walls, digging and gliding to advance to the end.
I would have liked to see more cutscenes, even if they were all mute. They’re a nice touch to move the story along. Remember, it’s not just about making a classic-style game, it’s about further improving on something that was already good.
On XBLA, there was a glitch where the d-pad would suddenly stop working in certain spots, such as:
Special stages
Swinging from vines
Balancing on the giant ball in Lost Labrynth
Not only was the boss music lame, the boss fights were lame. I also wasn’t a fan of going through everything a second time at the end. This isn’t Mega Man.
His-name-is-Doctor-Ivo-Robotnik. Having Sonic call him “Eggman” as an insult is alright, but it shouldn’t be listed as his name. And I’d much-rather go with “Ro-butt-nik” or “Ro-barf-nik”.
And finally, don’t worry so much about trying to attact a whole new generation of kids. Kids of today are stupid. They’re on drugs, they have sex, they have cell phones, they have guns. When I was a kid, we just played Sonic. Your original fanbase may be adults now, but we’ll still buy every Sonic game you make, no matter how old we get or how much we looked down apon by women. When I was a kid, Sonic was the game I played, the cartoon I watched, the plush I took everywhere, what we played at recess and what I drew on the back of all my assignments. I can still remember being the most popular kid in the 1st grade for a short time because everyone wanted me to draw Sonic for them. For a lot of us, Sonic takes us back to a time when life was pretty decent. No job, no bills, no bitch, no stress. If something ever was wrong, we’d just kick on the Genesis, put ourselves in Sonic’s shoes and outrun anything that could have possibly troubled us. That kind of comfort and security is hard to find in video games (or anything) these days. In fact, one of the main reasons why I never turned out to be a worthless, drugged up alcoholic is because I was always too busy playing Sonic. Getting all 7 Chaos Emeralds was always more important to me than trying to impress people by getting into trouble. Make the games that your real fans want and don’t worry about the kids of today. They weren’t there – they don’t know. “True blue for life” isn’t just a cool catch phrase.

Oh god yes… fix the physic!! And you have a very good point there.. Why only please the new fanbase? WE (the older gamers) MADE SONIC. We stood by it in the first place. Why ignore us? Why lie to us by saying that this game is the one we were waiting for for 16 years? Correct me if I’m wrong, but This is more of a Sonic Rush follow up than a Sonic 3 sequel.
Granted, the special levels are pretty fun, the first song in the first act of the first level is decent, but the rest of the songs are just “meh”….
And the physic…. goood god, the physic… its no good. Why ditch something that clearly worked 16 years ago with something that feels like an abomination? Yes, an abomination. The gameplay is broken. Simple as that. This is not Sonic 4.

Hey guys, I just loved the game, buuut….
Why you guys made this Sonic less faster??? When we are running and going up a hill annnd… he loses his speed! This is absurd!! It’s not good for any Sonic player, I’m sure. The game is very beautiful, nice music… But it’s such a copy of Sonic 2 with some details of Sonic 1! I was waiting for a brand new game, in every single aspect. It’s still a great game, and I’m playing to get all trophies now. But I am disappointed with Sega, you guys can’t do it right since Sonic 3 & Knuckles, so something is wrong. Do some research with the old gamers (from all over the world, please), and they will tell you everything to make a new good Sonic game, and this will be a real success.

Sonic 4 is a decent game. The graphics and music are great and the level design is fantastic (especially Lost Labyrinth Act 2) but I think you’re forgetting which fanbase you’re supposed to be aiming for. Everyone I know who bought this game are fans of the originals. They all gave up on Sonic after Sonic Adventure which means that they haven’t even played the newer games. I bought this thinking it’d be the original formula in HD with a homing attack. But it wasn’t. No matter how hard I try I cannot bring myself to love this game. The main problem is the physics. What is so impossible about recreating a 19 year old physics engine? In the originals, platforming was effortless. The way Sonic stops dead in the air in Sonic 4 makes platforming awkward and more importantly ‘unfun’. Whenver I play it I find myself skipping Casino Street Act 2 because I hate the card platforming at the end of the Act. The old physics would improve this section so much. Also, I find in the old games that half of your time is spent holding ‘down’ to spin so when you’re going though loops, down hills etc, you steadily gain momentum. Why was this element removed for Sonic 4? I find myself continually holding ‘right’ otherwise it’s impossible to gain any sense of speed or momentum. Apart from these problems though it’s a quality game. It’s common sense Sega. If you fix the physics you will make more money. Whenever I discuss this game with others, I find that most people downloaded the trial and deleted it after complaining about the physics. Know your audience Sega. The new fans don’t care about this. It’s us Megadrive lovers that forked out the £10. I’d completely given up on the Sonic franchise but this game has restored my faith. It’s brilliant start. I can’t wait to see what Episode 2 has to offer!
