Happy Hedgehog Day!
“This is pitiful. A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat. What a hype. Groundhog Day used to mean something in this town. They used to pull the hog out, and they used to eat it!” Ah, Groundhog Day. Besides being one of those movies that you really should see right now if you haven’t already, Groundhog Day itself is an interesting subject. In short: groundhog comes out of the ground, sees or doesn’t see his shadow, and we make broad-sweeping generalizations about the weather patterns for months based on that. Logically, it’s completely sound! Except that, actually, the history of Groundhog Day, and this whole “small mammal predicting the future” thing does have some truth to it. (Possibly even more than Paul, that one Octopus who was predicting world cup games last year.) Oh, and one other, minor thing: back then, they didn’t use Groundhogs. They used Hedgehogs.
In this picture, Sonic has closed up the southern entrance to his house based on coming wind patterns. Only the north entrance, seen on the right, is visible. You see, Hedgehogs actually have a rather amazing ability – far beyond anything we humans naturally have – to sense and predict changes in the wind direction. Hedgehogs were known for building two entrances to their little homes, one facing north and one facing south. If the wind was going to blow in harshly from the north, the hedgehog would sense this, and would close the northern entrance. If the wind was going to blow from the south instead, it would open up the northern entrance and then close the south in preparation for the change. It may be no small coincidence that in the early 90′s, SEGA renamed February 2nd ‘Hedgehog Day‘, a tradition we continued with our announcement of Sonic 4: Episode 1 on this very day one year ago. The year since has been one of the most exciting and active for the blue blur since, perhaps, just after those original glory days – and with both Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors arriving in that time, the speedy blue hedgehog has proven that there’s both refreshed life and quality lying ahead of him.
Aristotle, above, is one among many Greeks who wrote on the unique abilities of Hedgehogs. Just as the Greeks did those early days in winter when they brought out their own little hedgehogs to sense changes in the wind and weather, perhaps we can do the same for the future of Sonic. So then, what does the coming year hold for our beloved blue hedgehog? As you should already know, this year is the 20th Anniversary for Sonic, with his birthday coming up on June 23rd, 2011. It’s almost hard to believe that his 20th year has already arrived – time, just like hedgehogs with way-past-cool sneakers, flies by before you know it.
Having seen and sensed the direction and future that our own hedgehog has in front of him, this author’s personal thoughts are fairly simple: this year may very well be the best year that Sonic has had since the Genesis days. The winds just ahead of us bring very good things. So, to all of you who have been with us since last year’s Hedgehog Day – and even to those who remember the very first Hedgehog Day almost two decades ago: thanks for standing strong, sticking with us, and supporting the blue blur. We hope you’re just as stoked as we are for what lies ahead. Aristotle, often cited among the Greeks who wrote about Hedgehogs and their powerful wind-sensing abilities, was himself later categorized among writers and thinkers in a comparison that any Sonic fan might find quite interesting. Rumor has it, in fact, that there are two styles of science: compared as either objective or abstract. Find the false line within this paragraph itself, and you may find hidden answers of your own.
On behalf of our teams at SEGA - Happy Hedgehog Day, everyone!

It’s certainly something to think about.
I don’t think Sonic’s future is set in stone. This may be his big year, but he’s got a rough climb. Then again, I doubt he’d appreciate the lack of challenge otherwise. If things were always easy, he’d get bored. Frankly, so would I.

Sounds kind of like you’re hinting at a Greek themed game .. 3rd in the story book series?

*(Will probably need to be edited) Alright, so Berlin wrote an essay called “The Hedgehog and the Fox,” where Aristotle is grouped as a fox…are you saying that Miles will be Aristotle in some third Storybook game, and Sonic will be Plato or Dante or someone?
And what’s the paragraph’s false line? Do you mean sentence or line of text? The first sentence is good, but the second (to me) makes no syntactical sense. (It’s objective v. subjective and abstract v. concrete) So if it’s false…how does it lead anywhere? Just please say it’s not another storybook game; those things are not what Sonic should be known for, so keep him as far away from them as possible.

Wow, so many people are interpreting this in so many ways. I’ve been hearing some rumors about what the 20th anniversary will hold, though, I have no way of knowing how reliable they are until Sega gives us absolute confirmation.
But, man, oh, man! It’s going to be seriously hard for the 20th anniversary to top the 10th. Unless we get the Adventure games ported once again (just hope they’d keep the same voices and sounds for the sake of those games’ actual fans) like “SA: Ultimate Chaos” and “SA2: Project Shadow” or something. At least, that’s what I always thought be be nice subtitles. There is no denying that Sonic has been in a bad slump for a while, but Sega can make an excellent comeback in due time. Think about the past. What made games like Sonic Adventure 2 so wildly popular? Should Sonic run non-stop or should the play be challenged by the choice of what move to make? Should Sonic be alone or alongside friends? Should Eggman be comedic or serious? Should the story be on Mobius or Earth? Should the plot be simple or complex? Should the style be lighthearted or hardcore? Should Crush 40 be involved this time? There are so many variables that really add up to make something a success or a flop and getting in touch with the people you are sending your products out to is vital to make sure everything is what everyone dreamed, much like when Sonic Adventure 2 was in production. And Believe me, I find it no stretch to say that Sonic Adventure 2 was… IS the most inspirational videogame on Earth and certainly my most favorite in the series. That game was challenging, had so many extras, you had to be precise, the story was awesome, the actors were great, the script was classic, the characters were diverse, the chao were adorable, the multiplayer was incredible, the upgrades were cool, the levels were fun, the game was practically perfect. It seems to me that the best way for Sonic to continue with such greatness is to reflect on his first ten years, as that was when everything was without worry and was blowing our minds away. I’m not saying “make Sonic Adventure 3″ (let’s leave that untouched, ok?), I’m saying “make what’s great even greater by what made it great in the first place”, if that makes any sense. I am looking forward to Sonic’s 20th anniversary and even have real hopes to contribute to the blue blur, someday!

@unknown – Are you kidding? Of course Sega has a solid idea of the 20th Anniversary game. I mean, they said we were in for a BIG game for the 20th anniversary last year, and were probably planning it before that. Sega learned there leason to not make games at the LAST MINUTE when they rushed Sonic 06, so they were probably putting a lot of time and effort into this game.
@Chris K – Not bad! You’ve shown just about every single thing Sonic has appeared in. Nice work.

Isaiah Berlin wrote the Hedgehog and the Fox, where the fox knows many little things and the hedgehog knows only one large thing. If you apply this to Sonic, then Tails is the fox that knows almost every small detail about like electronics and stuff. Sonic is the hedgehog that only knows one big thing, “it doesn’t matter now what happens I will never give up the fight, there is no way I will run away from all of my frights
Long as the voice inside me says go, I will always keep on running,
there is no way to stop me from going to the very top,
it doesn’t matter who is wrong and who is right”

Also, I still say Sonic Adventure 3 won’t be happening. It MAY be a possibility but… I seriously doubt it. From what evidence has shown, my belief is still that it is a collection of classic stages re-made in 2D/3D. And the model will naturally be modern Sonic, and maybe a choice to play as classic Sonic.
That is my belief on the Sonic 20th game matter. Sorry if that angers anybody, but that’s just what I think. ^^;

How do we know if they’re making a SA3? Sonic Colors 2? STH 4 EP:II? Or even another olympic games with mario? Although that wouldn’t really be a Sonic 20th anniversary game because it has mario.
If anything they should make another Sonic Chronicles.=)
But that’s just my opinion. Sega should make whatever they want.
Heck they probably won’t make a SA3 because that would be takin’ someone else’s idea. AKA: Copywrite XP

Has anybody noticed that SEGA hasn’t answered your questions yet in the comments that we post above. They’re obviously hideding sumsing. Maybe its something about another olympic games game(BERLIN). I sure as heck hope not unless its totally kicks butt or sumtin. Cuz I thinks that that is where they is holdin em in 2012. Oh wait that’s the end of the world. heh, end of the world does anybody have a single oz. of common sense would know that the world aint gunna end. oh well.
Sonic’s awesome!

Just hope a nice game of Sonic. Sonic is like a friend for me, i was just a little kid when i started to play Sonic. Now i’m a big big big big (…) big fan of him and his friends and pisses me off when i read some commentaries about Sonic games just saying the games are bad, the games are awful blah blah blah. I believe there are many people out there that doesn’t like Sonic games, that’s natural, but, if you don’t like, you don’t need to bad-talk the games or post videos on youtube showing gameplays to try to make us believe the game is bad… well i already have seen so bad gameplays of Sonic games from haters… Sometimes they don’t even know how to play properly –’ and for the “fans” that started to bad-talk Sonic and Sega too… well SEGA could have made some mistakes, but, as a true fan, you need to give to SEGA your support. As true fan and friend of Sonic and his friends is unimaginable for me to bad-talk the games. SEGA and Sonic Team has my total support to keep making new Sonic games and make a lot of people very happy. Sorry about my english and about the big comment :S

I’m with Chis K. here…theres a probability that SA3 won’t happen…not only because of the speculation of UNleashed being SA3…but because of something that happen back in 2001……ok u might not beleieve me but…Sonic Heros is/or supposed to be, Sonic Adventure 3…..now before u go Fanboy spam on me…let me explain myself….

Sonic Heroes was originally going to be called Sonic Adventure 3 although the game’s director Takashi Izuka said not to make it a continuation as he worried that only core gamers and fans would buy the game instead of casual players

There will be NO Mario And Sonic olympic games this year. It will be a type of Sonic Shuffle and Mario Pary game with characters from both worlds joining together to play on a board type level with mini-games and such.
So I repeat, it is NOT a Mario And Sonic OLYMPIC game, it is a PARTY game.
And the following is copied from the description in my YouTube video that I posted in a comment before here. I figured the following deserved to be said here.
From SEGA to Sonic Team… From Needlemouse to Sonic… Twenty long years have passed since the “Blue Blur” ran into my heart… Into our hearts. He is the very simble of freedom… Of hope and destiny… Living life to the fullest, and always keeping his friends close at heart. Breaking a few along the way… But always keeping them close. Through so many games and TV shows, Sonic has become as big a part of the world as the living legends of the past. Sonic represents what the very soul of America is about. And he joins people from all over the world and bonds them together, something no man alive has been able to do since the dawn of time. You are a true hero Sonic The Hedgehog… Thank you for all you have done for me and the world. May you forever be immortal, forever be loved… Forever be true and strong. Never stop running Sonic, for you give the world true hope and happiness.
62 Video game covers…. 255 Comic covers… 51 Pieces of SEGA art… And 100 pieces of fanart. I put my heart and soul into putting this tribute together, just as Sonic has put his into every thing he does.
Thank you to the following people and industries for making Sonic who he is today. Even if you are no longer a part of Sonic now, you will always be remembered in his heart and our’s for the wonderful thing’s you did for the series. May all of you live on as legends to the world as well.

I’m waiting for Sonic 4: Episode II for WiiWare. SEGA, if you are going to release it (or anything for that matter) by Sonic’s 20th Anniversary, I suggest you let the world know soon for obvious reasons. I’m a huge fan of Sonic 4 Episode 1 and can’t wait for the next chapter! Also, I own the Sonic Mega and Gems Collection for Gamecube. It would be really tight if you put all of their contents onto one disc for a new Sonic Collection for Wii, possibly adding the Sonic games that were for GBA. I know that if you did all this, throwing it all onto one disc for the current generation, you would make a lot of gamers very happy, especially those who like myself who are retro junkies.
One more thing. Please update the Sonic 4 ep1 website! And we could use some more fan kits.

You know I’ve been around to see Sonic the Hedgehog begin when I was only four years old, and I watched in horror and agony to see the “Sonic Team” destoy him in Games and T.V. shows! But in the end I’m 25 years old and I still love Sonic the Hedgehog. So for everyone who complains about Sonic or says that they’re too old for Sonic…That’s bull you can never be too old to love Sonic. Because I finished my last tour with the marines 3 months ago and I still love Sonic the Hedgehog and I’m a Marine! Long live Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles “Tails” Prower!

Simply adding Tails to the mix is an easy win situation; in platforms, he’s always been optional… and a separate style of gameplay would extend the replay value. Not to mention: a lot of people love Tails!! However, there appears to be the implication that, while Sonic relies on speed, Tails will rely on a host of attributes. This is straying from the classic gameplay to a VERY risky degree. If he comes off as anything else in Tails’ clothing, it could seem too gimmicky.
Money has to be made with a new generation but please don’t betray your longest-running fans, SEGA.

I’d just like to say something about Sonic’s move back to the classic game style. I’m all for it! But what I really miss are the gorgeous cinematics present in the main series between Adventure and Unleashed.
I want to be able to play as Super/Hyper Sonic streaking from left to right across the screen, and then be treated to a stunning Pixar-esk cutscene that helps carry the story forward in a feature film fashion.
Even if it necessitates a disk bound retail release, the extra quality would be worth it to me. Feel free to leave your thoughts.

ALRIGHT! (I know i’m a bit late) But for those of you still figuring it out: Sonic 4 Episode 2 will feature Sonic and tails again because of Issiah Berlin’s book: The Hedgehog and the Fox. AND if you are looking for the false line it is the fact that Issiah Berlin was the one who researched Hedgehog’s abilities of wind change so it could mean one of two things
A) Another way of pointing you to Issiah Berlin’s book
OR
B) The fact that the 3rd installment of the story telling series will feature that Greek
God
Am I close?
