Today is a very exciting day in community, it’s always a treat when we bring out a game that we know is going to excite our fans. What better way to do this than to announce the return of a true SEGA gem from the Saturn era: Guardian Heroes! Read on for the full press release…
SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announced the upcoming re-release of Guardian Heroe, a classic Action-RPG Brawler by celebrated developers Treasure. Originally released for the SEGA Saturn™ in 1996, Guardian Heroes has been re-mastered with enhanced graphics, online co-op and battle modes, all-new modes of play, and more. The game will be available via Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft this fall.
“Ever since we began to make SEGA’s classic Dreamcast and Genesis / Mega Drive titles available for modern systems, the fan response has been overwhelming – and the demand for their favorite games has been pouring in,” said Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA. “Players have been clamoring for this treasured favorite from the Saturn days, and we cannot wait to show them what we have got for them – all of the fantastic side-scrolling action, branching story paths, and distinct characters, now in a fully HD, widescreen presentation with online support. ”
Guardian Heroes brings the Saturn favorite to life with new HD graphics, presenting Treasure’s iconic fast-paced gameplay on a new generation of hardware, with all of the convenience of purchase via instant download. The game also features:
Action-RPG Brawling: Choose one of four heroes to level up and guide along a branching storyline with five different endings
Friends, Foes, and Fighters: Play the game’s Story Mode alone or with a second player, or challenge Versus Mode with up to 12 players at once
Extended Gameplay: Time Attack Mode, Arcade Mode, Arrange Mode and more allow players to explore every nuance of 45 different fighters
Fully Re-Mastered: All-new graphics and visual effects bring the classic to life in a completely high-definition, widescreen presentation
As an active member of the SEGA community, I can say with certainty that Guardian Heroes is a name I’m regularly seeing across the internet for game requests. We hope you are as excited as we are!
Concept Art
As a special release for community, we have signature art assets available! We hope you enjoy these concept images, with more on the way for this classic, signature SEGA title!

@Clumsyorchid Yeah, it’s a great start, but I fear my Saturn will die soon, so the more Saturn games I can get on a newer console, the better. Plus, I’m pumped for hi-def Saturn games. Astal maybe?

I believe the little rabbit dude was called Nando, right? Randy and Serena were my favourite characters, but I loved being able to play as Valgar in battle mode!
Will the music be the same? I loved the soundtrack from the original! Especially Valgar’s theme

I too, would be rather disappointed if SEGA did not release their Saturn games for PC & PS3. Exclusives are not typically SEGA’s style though, so I’ll hold out some hope for a fair release on all the systems one would expect.

I would love to see this and other Saturn game out on the XBLA. Beats shelling out for the game on eBay, and I’d rather Sega and the developers get some money for such an awesome game instead of yet-another-reseller out to make a buck of nostalgia.
PS-Another game in the Panzer Dragoon universe would be awesome too, that’s an epic series.

My favorite Saturn game coming to XBLA is simply a dream come true! All those characters and different endings were just MADNESS

But please, please, give us the option to use the original graphics, screenshots I have seen of this port use a Sai2x filter of some sorts which make graphics look like washed out sprites

I’ve been hoping for this ever since I saw Ikaruga come to XBLA. Really hope everything from the original is preserved faithfully.
I’m bugging all of my friends to get this the moment it hits so I can coop with them. Driving to pick up friends to play coop with was a regular weekend thing when this game came out. I look forward to rounding them all up again online.
Any chances of porting all of the panzer dragoon games too?

Also, I really hope that this is a glimpse at what is to come and that Sega will be dipping into its amazing Saturn library. It would be awesome to see a release of NiGHTS, Shining Force III, Burning Rangers, and, of course, Panzer Dragoon Saga on PSN and XBLA.

I was a big fan of Guardian Heroes back in the day. I would spend ages trying to get the debug cheat to trigger so i could play as Serena right off the starting grid, lol. She’s the one for me! XD
I’m excited for this. Very much so.
This HAS to be the start of more to come, at least that’s my hope anyway. The Saturn as a console was so overlooked, people need a chance to play some of its titles. I can think of a certain purple jester who had a game on that console too, wouldn’t it be nice of that game was also ported as well?

WOW i’m absolutely amazed. And here I thought @SEGA forgot about us gamer pensioners who remember the Saturn.
To have this game released on ANY format is a HUGE win for gamers in general. To see a SEGA SATURN on the radar puts the console back in the spotlight, where it should always have been!
Next: Fighters Megamix HD please

As others have stated, do NOT let this be exclusive to the 360. It was hard enough dealing with it being exclusive to the Saturn for several years. It would be entirely unfair to make it exclusive on the 360. There are plenty of users on the PS3 and Steam that would jump on the chance to be able to play this game.

There’s lots of hate going on in other boards, but this is a good thing. It’s about about time SEGA started to bring more of their franchises back and onto XBLA. This should have happened a long time ago. Now, you guys have the opportunity to bring back even more Saturn favorites, and the next title has to be Panzer Dragoon Saga.

“Proper remaster” or not, just having access to one of the greatest games to have ever graced the Saturn generation with new online co-op capacity is without a doubt one of the greatest reasons to own a 360. It would be a shame to not share this with PSN/PS3 I must say, not because I dont own a 360, but because this game is that much pwnage.
Consider a copy of this game already sold.

I’m noticing ’4 selectable characters’ here …and Serena would make her the 5th so …won’t she be included then? *sad face* I wasn’t sure if you could ever access her outside of debug mode …and i doubt this port will occur with debug mode in it so does that mean no Serena for me? T_T
Also, just because i need to make it obvious otherwise i wouldn’t be doing my job – NiGHTS INTO DREAMS ….and i got about 4780 people backing me up on that one, Clumsy >:]

Guardian Heroes was one of the greatest games to ever grace the Beat em up scene. Sega I commend you for bringing out so many classic games from your partnership with treasure. Ikaruga, Radiant silvergun (on the way), Gunstar Heroes, and now Guardian Heroes. As a fanboy I’m proud to see that a company will still bring out titles that were once very niche to a much larger audience.

I hate to be a party pooper but I’m really, really sick of this ‘HD REMAKE’ nonsense… That isnt HD, that is a horrible filter that nobody wants.
This otherwise fantastic announcment has been ruined for a lot of people because the PR statment got their hopes up for a HD remastered version and instead we get this cheap looking filter…
Seriously stop doing this… Either make a good HD remake or give us the filter but don’t tell people its a HD remake and make sure you announce in the PR that both versions are optional…

That said now that I’ve seen it running live on ‘On The Spot’ I feel much better about how it looks. HD Sprites still would have been better but it doesnt look as bad as those original screens made it look.

Thank you very much for bringing Guardian Heroes to XBLA. I’ve played the Japanese version on my friend’s Saturn and I’ve been looking for a long time to get a reasonably priced English version for myself. I want to say to PLEASE work on making the online the best it can be. The whole point of playing games like TMNT, Final Fight and Guardian Heroes is being able to play them with friends. So please make sure the online netcode can support all of the players. Final Fight Double Impact worked great, so please see about using GGPO for the netcode.
Also, could it ever be possible to release a Saturn controller for the Xbox 360? I know there was a version for the PC but I would love to be able to play Guardian Heroes and other 2D games with a Saturn controller, which I still think is the perfect 2D gaming controller that has ever been made!

Amazing news! This was most definitely a curve ball. Many people have been clamoring for more SATURN releases on XBL/PSN.
I understand there is more logistical hurdles with Saturn titles, especially if many of the games no longer have source code (Panzer Dragoon Saga), but PLEASE do not stop here. I understand and agree with 1 step at a time, but please consider the other great Saturn Franchises/Titles. Shining Series, Panzer Dragoon (SAGA!!!!!), Dragon Force, Grandia (Saturn was much superior to PSOne version), Albert Odyssey. And so many others….please keep the train moving!

@Tsukento: Virtual ON, for a start. Additionally, not all the titles saw a PSN release outside of America. The only way to get, for example, Sonic 3 and Knuckles in Oceania without owning the original Mega Drive version is to have a Wii or a 360 — The Ultimate Mega Drive collection doesn’t have lock-on for those two games. That’s not counting the 3rd party re-releases like Soul Calibur or Ikaruga.

The Saturn, out of all my platforms, is one I’m still collecting games with, and though I have many rare titles for it (especially my beloved Panzer Dragoon Saga), Guardian Heroes was one I missed out on. As horrible as I am with Treasure’s games, there’s something about them that keeps pulling me back.
Of course, I would hope that this would lead to eventual re-releases of Saturn titles. And there’s that little bit in me that really wants MODEL2, MODEL3, or NAOMI arcade titles that didn’t exactly reach home. (Yes, I’m aware of Virtual-On and bought a X360 for the game, even though I own the Dreamcast version)
Thanks Treasure and Sega.

Sure, I know they are. But why bother when they are obviously pretty poor. I’ve been missing the ‘if you do something, do it right’ attitude at SEGA for far too long. So, SEGA, start do the right thing by putting some SERIOUS effort into your releases rather than always taking the easy/cheapest road. Don’t end up like Acclaim.

I saw some gameplay yesterday on Gamespot’s On the Spot, and it looked pretty good. I’m pretty sure I’ll be picking this up now. I do have to ask, why was the HD mode darker than the non filtered version? Was it some color correction because the level shown was at night?

This is fantastic news! Its a Great game, that more people will finally get to play! I would like to press two major points though. First, I hope it makes it over to Steam for pc digital distribution. Second, and most importantly, I really hope this is the Strt of porting other amazing Saturn titles. I see panzer dragoon saga, fighters megamix, and burning rangers as being very successful Live Arcade titles!

Please, Please, Please SEGA put this on PSN. THIS GAME WILL SELL. This game is what every gamer wants. For you not to put this on Xbox Live, PSN, and even STEAM is a travesty. If you are willing to give Sonic so many chances and take risk on so many other new IPs, Why would you then limit the sales of one of your biggest franchises. It breaks my heart to know that you even considered going exclusive. Please SEGA. Don’t punish your fan base. Put this game on as many downloadable services as you can. Thank you for hearing me out.

I trust Treasure is handling, or at least supervising, the remake? Their work is just so full of love that I hope they are on board.

However I do kind of wish that Guardian Heroes Advance was added on to this – I couldn’t get to grips with it on the GBA =/

When in the Saturn my friends and me loved the game and the only thing we agreed was that the story mode would be amazing if four of us could play it at the same time.
Please think about it and make this happen for us the old fans please please please, thanks.

I have A LOT of memories of Guardian Heroes. In fact, it’s one of the reasons why I still have my Saturn, but after all those years of loving and mastering this game the last memory you’re going to leave me with is that I can’t get this version because I own a PS3 and not a 360??!?!?! Honestly Sega, I was the biggest Sega fanboy until you left me high and dry after the Dreamcast and now this feels like a complete slap in the face! I was literally the guy who would maybe have another system here or there but would ALWAYS have the current gen Sega system. If you’re truly never going to make another console, then at least give me this. Sheesh. My Randy skills are unmatched, by the way.

It is a complete travesty that this is not coming to the PS3. Haven’t PSN users suffered enough? I suggest a ban on SEGA products until we get this game on the PSN. Moreover, we PSN users want parity with the XBLA users. I’m sick and tired of having to wait 6 months to a year for game to come to the PSN.

Sega pleeeeeeeeeeeease put Guardian Heroes on PSN/PS3!!!!!!! Most of the games on PSN (except for about a nice 40%) are really lame and boring….. No joke. If you were to put Guardian Heroes on PSN it would be such a HUGE blessing (the selection of games we have on PSN now are so horrible you just don’t understand how badly we need this title). Alot of loyal PSN users would buy this game and I could assure you that this would be one of the few game that people would buy and not illegally share or download. You would not be wasting your time and money developing this game for playstation (or with a sequel either, that game would be a game changer if you decide to). THE PLAYSTATION UNIVERSE NEEDS THIS GAME!!!!!…….. BADLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to voice our opinions and thank you for letting me share my thoughts and may you all have a very nice day. P.S. a third game in the series would be awesome as well (this game has byfar the best action/fighting engines ever created, I love it!!!!!).

Sega what is your problem. Put it on PS3. While I am at it, Sega, why the heck would you released Sonic on the PS3 and 360 without the lock-on technology for Sonic and Knuckles. Really, Sega, you should come out with a legit emulator for ps3 and just sell the roms. Easy to do and it would require no large development teams. As it is, you can play emulators on computer and the consoles and download the roms. Why not make some green and make people happy.
