About Those Graphics in Guardian Heroes…We announced Guardian Heroes for XBLA last week, and the response was great! It’s amazing to see so much excitement around this game. But one thing that generated a lot of questions and comments was the statement “Guardian Heroes has been re-mastered with enhanced graphics”. A lot of you wanted to know exactly what that meant, so here are some more details for you! In HD:
Same as Saturn:
Changes:
And because I know you want comparison shots, here they are! With HD
Saturn Mode Hope that clears it up for you! If you have more questions about Guardian Heroes, please ask them in the comments. I may not be able to answer them all, but I’m happy to tell you anything I can.

So glad the original sound track is intact! Awesome tunes.
The HD upgrade actually looks really nice. I know the upscaling in some games has looked worse than the original, but SEGA have done a great job here. I can’t wait!

Now Sega, you know what to do with a certain franchise that has a specific purple jester, for his 15th.

Thanks for the extra information. I’m still wondering why the HD graphics seem darker than the Saturn mode.

Will the animated intro be retained in Saturn and “HD” modes?
Any chance at getting a high resolution / less compressed version of it for HD mode?

I wish there was an option to turn off the crummy filter on the sprites but keep the other enhancements like the better transparencies and effects and the filtering on the backgrounds.

Question that’s been asked often around Guardian Heroes message boards is that is there any mode that lets you play with the 45 characters during the Story/Main mode, or are they a Versus only thing?

Awesome, will there be an option for the original graphics too?

@ #6 It’s only in the arena. 45 players during the story mode would break the game.

Can you play multiplayer (i.e. 6 players) co-op? I was gutted when I finally got my Saturn multitap only to discover the 6 player mode was versus mode only, =P.

Please, instead of 2 player co-op, raise the limit to 4 player co-op in the story mode in this GH port before release.

Balanced verses mode sounds good, I remember my brother picking the last boss and continually doing the full screen explosions while the rest of us were fighting amongst ourselves

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Pixellation and slow-down made for some awesome moments in that game!! Really adds to the atmosphere when a screen-filling attack makes everything go haywire. HD updates look seriously crummy because of the lack of detail, whereas a good sprite is a good sprite!!

This might sound a little silly, but will the animated intro that was featured in the original Saturn release appear as well? Just asking…

Can you have the old Saturn version style HP and MP metres in the HD version? Also it would be amazing if it’s possible to skip Kannon’s rant in the middle, I read it enough for two life times. Finally thank you for remaking Guardian heroes, I still own my Saturn copy.

Will it be possible to only pick some HD features for the game? Like if we wanted the new portrait art and magic effects but still have original unfiltered blocky sprites?
Also, with versus mode, any chance for customized or tiered randomizers? So I can disable characters I don’t want to be used. Or have a normal dude tier, hero tier, boss tier type options for the random selector? This was always an issue I had with the original.

Some questions (and hopefully constructive criticism):
- The game looks darker in “HD mode”, probably due to the filtering, This is very noticeable in the Gamespot preview video. This may be a side-effect of the blur generated by the filters, which drains the color from the entire image, although it does seem to be present on the characters as well. I hope this will be fixed before the game is released?
- The HD mode completely smudges the background. Look at the second and fourth image and compare the backgrounds, all the detail in the background of the HD screenshot has been obliterated in an effort to hide the pixels. The filter being used there is way too aggressive. Again, I hope this is going to be tweaked?
- The remade HD characters aren’t actually worthy of being called HD, they weren’t remade from scratch in high resolution and it clearly shows (look at the sword and staff in the first HD screenhot). Apart from some anti-aliasing and the “striped shadows” filter the difference between the original characters is very minor.
While I understand they might not have the budget to deliver a true HD version, I’d at least like to have control over the different filters being used rather than just an “HD ON/OFF” option. As it stands now the HD version gets rid of the pixels but at the cost of a ton of detail. Right now I’d probably want to play the Saturn mode, but with the new fonts/gauges/close-ups, something that apparently wouldn’t be possible at this point.

Does the game translated into Spanish or English will be integrated into the original? Will we be able to choose the voices in Japanese / English?
Best regards.

Although I’m a bit dissapointed that my Saturn disk will severly depreciate in value, I’m thankful for the revised graphics. Thanks Sega for making an extra effort and thanks Treasure for making an awesome game!!!

This is insanely awesome news. I’m glad SEGA and/or Treasure got together to make this port a reality. One big question that I’m about on my knees in hoping for is that -ONLINE- functionality be added, even if only limited to the versus arena. Having online co-op would be amazing since a friend and I that I still keep in contact with owns a 360, the Saturn, and a copy of Guardian Heroes for the Saturn that we used to play more often than Smash Bros Melee. It’d be great to experience that again though in the comfort of our own long distanced homes.
I really hope some new programmers can enlighten this possibility as well- the online functionality attempted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for XBLA is just downright atrocious. There needs to be as minimal lag between the controller input and what takes place on screen as possible. Please please try to remedy this- I’d rather have local multiplayer than a heavily delayed input/lag online.
Other than the concerns and questions of possibilities- I’m completely psyched for this game. Trust me, if you take the time to make this a good port/remake, people will notice, and sales WILL reflect that. Just look at Castle Crashers- little to no advertisements were made of that game(that I know of), yet the online and co-op were so addictive(thus word of mouth helped sales) it’s one of the best selling XBLA titles to date.
Good luck SEGA, can’t wait to beat this game over and over again! Ginjirou FTW!

This is a dream come true – Guardian Heroes is my favorite game of all time!
My biggest request: 4-player Coop Story Mode
It seems the original didn’t have this option due to processor limitations (and there only being 2 controller ports on the Saturn).
With the upgrade to X360, it seems like an extremely logical upgrade. The new hardware can no doubt handle the extra players in the game (why Versus was raised to 12 players – and Story mode is basically a series of scripted Versus modes).
So PLEASE consider adding support for 4-player Story Mode.
YOU WILL SELL MORE COPIES AND I WILL DIE HAPPY

Instant buy for me. I do have Guardian Heroes on Saturn, but an updated release with online multiplayer, yes please. Of course, if 4-player story mode is implemented, that’ll be a dream come true.
