I’m really disappointed that it will only feature the Japanese soundtrack.
I recieved the PC version in 1996 so I grew up with the US soundtrack, and to me, the US soundtrack makes Sonic CD special… it gives the Sonic franchise a whole new feel, and I think that Spencer Nilsen created a truly brilliant atmosphere. As much as I love Sonic CD, it just won’t have the same feel. So I ask you, SEGA, please give us the option to choose either the US soundtrack, or the Japanese soundtrack… otherwise I may see myself not buying it… Or, make sure that if you use an Xbox 360 Custom Soundtrack, then the sound effects still activate (unlike the previous XBLA titles).

I 100% agree with merzitar, please give the option for US soundtrack. i STILL listen to it from time to time, and will NOT purchase the game if it comes only with the Japanese soundtrack. I have been waiting for this game to be re-released since I parted ways with my Sega-CD oh-so-many years ago. please don’t screw this up. Please.

I’m very happy the Japanese soundtrack is included. Yes it would be nice to have an option (to switch between the US or Japanese soundtrack). But for the past releases (PC, Sonic Gems Collection) the US soundtrack has been the only available version. If you really want the US soundtrack you can play those versions. But finally, officially, we get a US release of the game with the Japanese soundtrack. This is something that should have happened with the original game’s release, and I’m thrilled that it’s finally happening!
It gives me a good reason to buy it and play it all over again.

Agreed about the soundtrack! Sonic CD is my all-time favorite Sonic game, and I’ve played all in the main series and the SA series. The 4 different “versions” of each level w/ the time travel element is just too much fun. But yeah, the Spencer Nilsen soundtrack is essential to my memories =) Back in the day on my old website, I had a glowing review of his work on Sonic CD, and he actually sent me a personal email to say thanks! Great guy whose musical talents DESERVE to be heard by everyone — please make this happen, Sega! And thanks for re-releasing the BEST Sonic game of all time!

I really wonder why they use Sonıc’s ınsultıng nıckname for Dr Robotnık as hıs actual name these days…why dıd they change? He ıs Dr Robotnık, and Sonıc called hım Eggman to wınd hım up. In the days of Sonıc CD he was known as Robotnık-I hope they’ve not changed thıs ın the new release of thıs classıc. I lıke that Sonıc CD was so close to the story and characters developed ın the Sonıc the Comıc serıes too. It ıs a pıty that they moved on to new, odd and mısmatched characters not ın keepıng wıth the Sonıc world rather than expand on the storıes and characters that were already there (ın the newer games). Sonıc CD and Knuckles Chaotıx are perhaps the last Sonıc games that really were Sonıc, before some people at Sega ruıned ıt all…

Sega, you’ve given me hope that there’s still some good in the gaming industry when you acknowledge what the majority of your fans have said about the jpn ost being superior.
Now I’m just curious how the two cutscenes will be handled.

I agree with merzitar. I first played CD on Sonic Gems Collection, and the soundtrack was INCREDIBLE. The game was amazing and I’m glad I can play it on Xbox 360 now. I don’t mean to sound like a fanboy, but I think the US soundtrack is better.

Time Sonic, I like a in game reward for collecting all the time stones, i got spoiled with since sonic 2 with super sonic. it can be something that does not take away from the game, just somthing of a reward for doing all the hard work besides the awesome ending (which could be longer or show some awesome action scene plus the ending) Besides that kudos for sonic cd, amazing!

I completely agree with both of my fellow posters. When I first played Sonic CD, it was with the US soundtrack. Since the game’s release, it’s american music has been bashed all over the internet. But I think that particular soundtrack is one of Spencer Nilsen’s finest works (and that’s saying A LOT!). I would also like to see an option to download the game with either soundtrack. No offense to the guys at Sega Japan, but I think their american colleagues did a better job with the music.
And just for the record, I’m not american, and I love J-Pop. It’s just that Nilsen did a much better job, the original soundtrack sounds almost puerile. But the american version gave the game a whole personality of it’s own.

Glad it has the original soundtrack. The only EU release that ever used it was the original on Mega CD and I was annoyed that all re-releases utilised the inferior US soundtrack. =/

Thank you Sega for bringing back yet another Sonic classic to current consoles. I am disappointed that the US Soundtrack might not be in as that’s how I remember Sonic CD best. Even so, Sonic CD was a great game so I hope that if it so happens that we are stuck with the Japanese soundtrack, that it won’t ruin the experience. I hope that by the time it releases, you give us the option to select between both versions and in addition, I hope that someday you re-release Sonic 3 & Knuckles on PlayStation Network as well. Keep on rockin’ Sega!

I agree with the first poster. The Japanese soundtrack is a deal breaker for me. This was my favorite Sonic game back in the day when I played it on the Sega CD and the US soundtrack had a lot to do with my enjoyment. VERY disappointed as I probably won’t buy it now even though I was looking so forward to this. I guess I’ll need to track down a Sonic Gems disc for gamecube.

So it’s coming with its original OST? Well, can’t say I’m not disappointed that we won’t be able to toggle between both soundtracks at will, but Sonic CD still has amazing tracks either way. Besides, I can’t get rid of the feeling that we might hear a remix of both known versions of Bad Future Stardust Speedway when we’ll face off against Metal Sonic in Sonic Generations. Maybe a bit of “What I’m Made Of” in there? XD Anyway, just me being hopeful.
And a multiplatform release too? Sweet! Little Planet at home AND on the go!

So Awesome! so glad it coming out and I love the Japanese soundtrack to each there own likes and dislikes on the soundtrack but both be amazing!
I wanted to just send out for collecting all the time stones, i know sonic 2 spoiled me with super sonic ever since, however can there be a in between. like a time sonic that not as super and would not ruin the game for those against super sonic but be something like super speed or anything as a reward for collecting all the time stones. something cause besides getting the good ending i really like to know the hard work is recognized by giving a enhanced or super form of sonic just for the hard work.
An achievement is nice, but a Time Sonic would just be icing on the cake, you need them all anyway to really beat the game so why not be rewarded and if you dislike the use of it, just do not use the “Time Sonic” super mode.
Yeah call me spoiled since sonic 2 I admire the Dragon Ball Z – like super red-eyed Sonic for the longest time cause of the hard work you put into each sonic game.
I hope this could be heard and thank ya for not hating on me completely for the suggestion.”
Now I know it seems to be a mixed on changing the formula for a classic game but as you remember using super sonic on the games is a choice (in sonic 2 and sonic 3 it could not be helped actually so it was not a choice just even if you did not want to use it happened) as long as it was made a choice to use “Time Sonic” I think this idea would be a nice add on to the game.
I want something for kicking alien ufo butts! lol

I knew as soon as I read the article that everyone would be moaning about the soundtrack though. Having never heard either I will just be pleased to play it. Sonic fans never seem happy (green eyes, “Eggman”, physics etc etc). Sure I moan as much as everyone else… Sega must have such a hard time trying to keep everyone happy. So much so that they’ve put both new and old Sonic into their latest game…

Mfw Sonic CD is dubbed as ‘prequel to Sonic 4: Episode 1′. It’s kinda like calling Sonic Generations the long awaited sequel to Sonic Shuffle.
But yeah, I like the sound of the Japanese soundtrack, cos I have fond memories of playing Sonic 2 on the Master System with the Green Hills Zone stuck in my head (which I later learned was based on Toot Toot Sonic Warrior) and felt kinda jibbed when Europe got stuck with the US version for Sonic Gems Collection (as well as their lack of Streets of Rage).

Aw, SEGA, please include the option for the US soundtrack by Spencer Nilsen. It was a really enjoyable and delightful soundtrack. I loved Sonic CD so much on the PC (it came with our first PC ever, a Packard Bell back in the mid-90s) that I decided to get a SEGA CD and the version of Sonic CD for that as well.
Next I hope we see Knuckles’ Chaotix re-released. That was the one gem I never, ever had the opportunity to play, mainly because I chose the SEGA CD over the 32X.

Thanks for this, SEGA! I am really happy to see that SEGA is including the Japanese version for this release. I really think it’s much better than the US version for several reasons, but specially cause it’s the original soundtrack and because all songs of a level in different times are versions of the same, making the game more consistent. Those who never played the JP version will understand this when they compare the past songs in US with present songs in JP.
Nevertheless, I totally respect the opinion of those who love the US sountrack, cause it’s a good work, and most of all, cause once you’ve grown up with a version of a game, it’s really horrible to play it another way. So i too think the best for the game would be to include an option to choose US sountrack. I’m with merzitar on this.
Please SEGA, HD full animated secuences!! (with both JP and US songs i guess

Brilliant, brilliant news! Ever since that guy ported Sonic CD to the iPhone a couple of years ago to show you guys what it would look like, I’ve been hoping this would happen and it would get a full re-release! I wonder if that was how this came about? Anyway, Sonic CD is absolutely one of my top favourite games, and I’ll be picking this up on the 360 and the App Store for my iPhone!
However, as others in the comments have said, I also grew up with the NA soundtrack due to owning it on the PC and Sonic Gems Collection, I never actually had the original release, and I adore it! The NA soundtrack gives the game such a great atmosphere, making it feel like no other Sonic game and it plays a major part in how much I love this game. Sonic Boom is also an epic, epic theme song! So if it isn’t already a feature, please, please, please SEGA, allow us to choose between the two soundtracks! A lot of your Mega Drive ports for the iPhone allow us to choose between the U.S and Japanese soundtracks, so please include the same option here for Sonic CD!!
But anyway, thanks so much SEGA for finally making this absolute classic portable for the first time, I shall be playing it all the time wherever I go now!

If you people go back and listen, the Japanese soundtrack is far superior. The Past themes were kept the same for both releases, but Spencer Nilsen had no knowledge of them before writing his themes for Present and Future. Therefore the themes and melodies are vastly different, whereas in Japan the melodies carried over and evolved as the soundtrack shifted from Past to Present to Future, almost like remixes of each other. I guarantee if you listen to all three versions of any act in the japanese version as opposed to the US version, you will immediately notice the difference.

I’m so happy to see SEGA paying attention to the older fans. Heck, if SEGA released a simple hack of sonic 2 / 3+k / CD with new levels, I’d pay whatever they ask. (As fun as fan games are, it all seems like rehashing old stuff).
Anyways, yay Sonic CD. Yay original music. Yay SEGA! Thanks!

Please, PLEASE do not use the Japanese/European soundtrack for U.S.A. gamers. Sonic CD was a great game but if you release a version that most people did not grow up with then why should they buy it? As other people said, it would be awesome to have BOTH soundtracks available as a toggle option.
“Sonic Boom” forever!

I prefer the Japanese soundtrack, but how about offering the American one as an option or even DLC?

Personally, I’d like to see the ability to customize the soundtrack to each and every individual level. Generally, I prefer the JP soundtrack, but there are a few levels here and there where I feel the US has better tracks. I can’t imagine a single person anywhere picking the US version of Stage 1′s music, though. Sounds soooo awful and makes blood trickle down from my ears. Clearly stage 1 was Spencer’s lowest moment, composed while he was on drugs, depressed and contemplating suicide. All of the other levels he did were much better. Everybody gets the JP soundtrack for the PAST levels, though, and no amount of complaining can change that. I’d love to hear how US versions of the past would have turned out, but Spencer couldn’t figure out how to do chip music with the Sega CD (the past tunes are all chip tunes).

Great, now redo all the other Sonic games from the Genesis. Those backbone devs made those into crap. Button lag and blurring graphics of those ports or very poor.
I hope to see some cool unlocks for this glad they rebuilt this from the ground up.

Sonic CD is coming to digital platforms with music from the “original Japanese soundtrack”
That reminds me of how FUNimation advertised the remasterd DBZ boxsets.

On the one hand: YAY!!! Finally, I can play Sonic CD on my compy!
On the other hand: No option for the US Soundtrack? I understand that a lot of people seem to prefer the Japanese soundtrack, but I’d really like the option of being able to at least choose the US Soundtrack. I actually prefer it over the Japanese one.
Regardless, Thank you for this!

I do agree with James and merzitar. I do luv Both Versions, but still, the US soundtrack was pretty good. The Speed Run music kicked the JP Version’s ass, i think summ other songs as well. Still, even tho i have sonic gems, i’ll still download this anyways

I really don’t see why they feel the need to tie it in with Sonic 4. Probably because that game let so many people down they’re hoping they can boost it’s popularity by association.
To all those wishing they’d release it with both soundtracks: Apparently they can’t include the US soundtrack at the moment due to licensing issues, but you’ll be pleased to know that they’re trying to sort it out. Might eventually come out as a patch or (more probably) as DLC.
Personally, I’ve always preferred the original soundtrack. I don’t think the US one suited it very well (especially because they didn’t fit with the “past” themes) and even Spencer Nilsen himself once stated in an interview that he thought replacing the music was a bad idea.
Anyway, every re-release of Sonic CD since has only had the US soundtrack, so it’s about time they evened the score.
P.S. @ M@: He WAS originally called Dr. Eggman. Always has been; he was only originally called Robotnik in the US and Europe. Eggman is the correct name.

AMAZING!!! I have been waiting for this game for a really long time and like how it has the Japanese soundtrack but i do agree it needs to have a option for choosing between soundtracks. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING SONIC CD BACK!

No U.S. soundtrack, no buy. Come on, Sega. In this age of multi-gigabyte downloads, can’t you include both soundtracks and satisfy everybody?

@Stormwatch: that’s a great idea even though I like the Jap/Eur version better. however there was a pre-release in america that played the Japanese soundtrack before they changed it. Sonic CD was supposed to have been released in September of 1993 but due to remaking the soundtrack it was released in November instead. The Pre-release is titled “Sonic CD 920 (Sept. 20, 1993)” so this release could be that version finally getting a release (but I wouldn’t expect it to be released on that specific date) but if that is the release date then I would have SEGA pegged from the get-go. But thats unlikely!

Nice I’ll buy it right away when it shows up on PSN =)
However there’s something that’s bothering me
When will you release Sonic 4 Episode II (If you didn’t give up already on it)?
And more important, what about the best Sonic ever? Sonic 3 & Knuckles? ._. when will you release bundle this PS3?

Including the original japanese soundtrack is a great decision, but please also include the US version as well. I grew up with this game, and still own both my Sega CD copy and my Windows PC copy, and I just wouldn’t be able to play it without the soundtrack I’ve always known. Without it, I have no desire to get this again.

Why are people saying that they will not buy the game over the music? Really guys? You buy games to play them, not sit and listen. Who would pay 60 bucks (Price for console games these days) for music? It’s ridiculous. And to that one fanboy who hates Sonic because Eggman’s name is Eggman, his name was Eggman since 1991 in Japan. His name was Eggman the whole time. It was the Americans like me who changed his name to Robotnik. Sure, it’s totally better than Eggman, but first, get your facts straight.

Sonic Generations was in development since Sonic Unleashed was released. Sonic Colors was most likely written after Generations. The Happy Tree Friends and Madworld writers have shown they can write a good story in Colors, so Generations is good by default.

@ I Dislike All Sonic “Fans”: Finally Someone is making sense if people don’t buy because of something as trivial as music then no games would be bought. Like I said in my last post I don’t hate the American soundtrack, I just prefer the Jap/Eur version more because it’s rare to have its original tracks in America and really I don’t care which tracks go in because I like them both.

thank you sega! ive been hoping this would happen for years. some of my fondest childhood memories are of me playing this game. however, i am dissappointed in the lack of a US soundtrack. it just wont feel the same without “sonic boom.” i grew up with the us soundtrack and when i hear it, waves of nostalgia rush over me, but i am not attached to the japanese soundtrack what so ever. that being said, i probably will end up downloading this for my xbox, but im going to download the US soundtrack and play it over the game. any who, its a step in the rigt direction sega
. now if only you guys could re-release knuckles chaotix..

This re release has me seriously craving some sonic cd, but I don’t care for the international soundtrack :/ it’s not a bad soundtrack by any means, but i didn’t grow up with it, and it just feels wrong playing it without the US soundtrack. im going to buy myself a sega CD for Christmas, with a copy of sonic CD and maybe a few other games. Sorry sega, but the US soundtrack is a deal breaker for me. If you do end up releasing the US soundtrack as DLC, dont charge us for it pretty please with a cherry on top.

Sonic CD was among my favorites. I love EVERYTHING that has to do with the blue blur. I love ALL of his games and nitpicking fans do nothing good for the dying franchise. The whining needs to stop. Real fans unite. My only opinion to make Sonic games better is to bring back the figure 8 peel out.

I really hope the game has the option for the u.s soundtrack. Most people who grew up playing the game in America (like me) only know the u.s. Soundtrack. Sure , some of the tunes are downright cheesey, but i still love the music. Japanese tracks may be “better” musically, but I would wager that most American gamers will be replaying this game for nostalgia’s sake and would rather hear the same music that was sounding from their crt television sets in the early 90s when they revisit this gem of a title.
