Welcome Kate to the SEGA Community Team

As many of you know, it’s been Julian (ClumsyOrchid) and I doing a lot of the community work for the past few months, since Aaron (RubyEclipse) transferred to a different part of SEGA. And we’ve got the pile of empty coffee cups and dark circles under our eyes to prove it! But today starts a new chapter for the community team, because we’re thrilled to have Kate (kateburning) join the US community team as our Assistant Community Manager.

Since we like to introduce you to the people here at SEGA, and since you’ll be interacting with Kate a lot both online and in person (at places like Comic Con, PAX, etc), we wanted to give you a chance to get to know her a bit. So without further ado…

Welcome to the SEGA community team! Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Kate and I just moved from Atlanta to San Francisco to join the SEGA community team. I like to bake and crochet and am, in general, a wealth of useless information.

What was the coolest thing  you saw on your drive from Atlanta to San Francisco?

We drove down parts of Route 66, so there were plenty of roadside attractions to stop at. One of my favorites was the Cadillac Ranch – which is a bunch of old Cadillacs that are halfway buried in the ground and painted. A lot of the people that stop to look at the Cadillac Ranch bring their own spray paint and add their names, so the cars are covered in graffiti.

Why did you want to work at SEGA?

SEGA Genesis was the first video game console I owned, and as an only child I spent tons of time playing lots of Sonic and Disney games. Working for SEGA is a childhood dream come true!

What are you most looking forward to at SEGA?

I’m really excited to be working in a field that I find interesting and fun – not everyone gets to do that!

What’s one thing that Atlanta has that San Francisco can’t compete with? And what does San Francisco have that Atlanta can’t match?

I’ll definitely miss good southern BBQ. I grew up eating really great BBQ, and once you leave the south it’s hard to find anything that can compete. However, San Francisco is definitely winning weather wise.

What’s your favorite SEGA game or franchise, and why?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the first video game I ever played, which automatically puts him in the top spot. I also really enjoy the abundance of oddly-themed fighting games that Genesis had, like Primal Rage (fighting dinosaurs!) and Shaq-Fu (fighting Shaq!).

So tell me about these cupcakes of yours.

I love baking, and cupcakes are one of my favorite things to make! My absolute favorite recipe is brown-sugar pound cake with almond frosting. If you look through my kitchen cabinets, you’ll find a comically large collection of sprinkles and cupcake liners.

I hear you’re a cosplayer, too. What’s your favorite costume/character? Any SEGA-related cosplay?

That is a tough question… I think my favorite costume to make was Akazukin Cha Cha, because she’s so cute and upbeat all the time. As for SEGA-related, I did Mew from Jet Set Radio and got kicked out of Anime Festival Orlando for rollerblading in the convention hall. (They let me back in once I put regular shoes on, but still…)

What superpower would you most like to have, and why?

The power to have all the powers I want? If I had to pick just one, I think I’d go with the ability to teleport. I’m always early to things because I hate being late, and I feel like I could time things out better if I could just teleport.

What games are you currently playing?

This has been my summer of Mortal Kombat 2011. You don’t want to be near me when I’m Sheeva. Not because I’m especially great, but because it’s guaranteed I’ll be singing “Whip My Hair” the entire time. I’m also always fooling around with Rock Band and my favorite classic games, like Space Channel 5 and Parappa the Rapper. (I’m definitely into music games, if you couldn’t tell.)

As you know, we like to show our own personalities around here. What will you do to help keep SEGA weird?

I tend to break out into songs spontaneously, and I also meow a lot. If you’re lucky, you can catch me meowing songs.

Please join us in welcoming Kate!
