Recently we ran a Sonic CD fanart contest across North America, Europe, and Mexico and today we’re really excited to show the entire SEGA community the winners! We received over 500 images across all three territories, which is an incredible amount of art and really shows how much Sonic CD has touched fans everywhere. Each territory had a total of FIFTY winners, FIVE of which received a GRAND PRIZE. Everyone, please join me in congratulating our winners!
Now, as we received a total of 138 winners across the three territories, this makes for a blog of epic length. So we’ve gone ahead and posted all the winning images to our Flickr page and will be posting the winning entries in batches leading into the holidays. Today’s update features our fifteen grand prize winners as well as the names of everyone who won the competition. Check back for updates with the remaining entries!

OH MY GOD! Some of these are just mind-blowingly amazing! Very happy to see just about all of my friends making a place among the winners!
And also… thank you SEGA. So much. After this, I’ve more confidence than ever in my art-and with my more powerful computer, I’ll be able to continue improving!
Thank you SEGA, for helping make the last month of this year an even more memorable one! :3

A really, truly superb set of entries. I’m particularly blown away by the 3rd entry down in the American Grand Prize Winners list, but every single illustration of course brings a lovely element of their own to the table.
Clumsyorchid – I don’t wish to draw attention to which illustration was my entry, but I was one of the European Grand Prize winners and I don’t see my name listed (my name is Tom F, and the closest I see in the list is Tom W, which may be a mistake). Obviously, I see my entry here, but it’d be very kindly appreciated if my name could also be corrected in the list as well please. Much obliged!
Well done everyone!

Also, all the entries are fabulous! Loving them!

The last picture in the North America section… That picture literally made me cry. So beautiful! One of my favorite moments in CD, when Amy uncover her eyes to look at her blue hero, but he’s already gone.
All these pictures are wonderful! Congrats to all the winners! You sure have made Sonic CD very proud.

Jordan – this came up on our Facebook page as well, here is my response as it covers off the same information:
The rules we created are intended to allow artists to submit their creations and not have their art stolen. I can tell you first hand how terrible I felt when I ran a contest or Black Knight and had one of the winners steal art from the internet from an unknowing Sonic Fan. That’s bad and it shouldn’t happen, so as we run these contests, we learn and we adapt.
Had this question come up at the time of post, we would have posted the same answer. It wasn’t our intention to confuse anyone, just protect the artists and make sure we’d not be giving cheaters big prizes. The prizes in this case is a code and CD, which are both available for purchase.
Very sorry there was confusion – please ask us in the future if anything is unclear, we’re reachable at communityteam (at) sega (dot) com, here on Facebook, @sega on twitter, or in the Blogs on the articles we publish.

There are so many talented people, well done everyone
I’d like to know when we’re contacted about our prizes since some winners have already had e-mails? I don’t know if to be worried since I’ve not had an e-mail yet. But I’ll give it time.

I'm also surprised to see a lot of entries from people who thought they didn't win because they didn't receive the first prize confirmation email, I'm SO happy for them since a few are my friends, I'm sure they'll be so happy to see their entries are one of the top 50!

I’m a little confused… One of the pictures in the European grand prize winners is from America, so does this mean America gets 6 grand prize winners and Europe gets 4? :/

Please also check out my recent article at my Sega fan blog about how Sonic CD influenced my art throughout my life: http://sega-memories.blogspot.com/2011/12/sonic-cd-is-my-life.html

After seeing these, mine looks terrible.
I feel like a lot of these were made via PC, thus using special effects to look so much better. A bit of an unfair advantage to the standard pencil/colored pencils but oh well.

The last 5 looked possible to draw, but the others was so so so good I thought they weren’t drawn at all. I didn’t enter the contest because I can’t even make a good Sonic. I drew one really good picture of him but I copied it off my toy. They first 10 pictures looked IMPOSSIBLE to draw. They must have done something to it do make it look really clear. By the way, great job to all of you winners. Also to the people who didn’t win, but tried.

I’ve entered this contest but I wasn’t a Europe Winner. Why am I not surprised that the Secret Angel Statue was not a common focus? (It was my focus, the Past and Bad future of said room). Ah well, gonna upload it to DeviantArt now that its over. I’m not surprised I lost either, those grand prize winners are off the scale in quality. Especially the last one (which took a while to realise it’s based on the Special Stage), that one’s a instant favorite. I might try again once I learnt how to color my drawings in.
