More SEGA Classics For Virtual ConsoleOut now for Virtual Console, the revolutionary arcade racer Super Hang-On — and coming out this May 10th, two entries from the classic Wonder Boy franchise: Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and, for the first time ever outside of Japan, Monster World IV! All three games are available for 900 Nintendo Points. Super Hang-OnBased on the hit arcade racer originally released in 1987, Super Hang-On will put your street bike skills to the test. Tour through 48 challenging tracks set across four continents and explore the rush of true arcade gameplay as you blaze through checkpoints in a race to beat the clock and your competitors. Wonder Boy in Monster LandThe once beautiful kingdom has been thrown into chaos by a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon and his monstrous henchmen whose aim is to create their own Monster Land. Unable to defend themselves from the onslaught, the people cry out for a hero to save them! As Wonder Boy, set out on an incredible journey across different environments and dungeons, collect powerful weapons and spells, and rid the land of evil! Monster World IVFor the first time outside of Japan, experience the final chapter in the classic Monster World series! As Asha, a young adventurer, set forth into Monster World and defeat evil alongside your amorphous pet Pepe and magical Genie in order to save the troubled Elemental Spirits! Gaming history buffs, take note — along with the original Phantasy Star, this is one of the first games to feature a female protagonist.

Awesome news. They’re both coming out on May 10th, right? In which regions, North America, Europe, or both?

And thanks for bringing a few more Genesis/Mega Drive titles for the PC on Steam this week!
Keep them coming (and I’ll keep buying them).

Hmm, are those backgrounds really present in the Virtual Console release? That’s very different from how every other VC game has behaved up to this point. It’s a little off-putting considering how VC has maintained great accuracy in preserving an authentic experience. Will there at least be an option to disable them?

@Jack: As far as I know, both. Will post if I find out otherwise!
@Leroy: Woo!
@Funktion: Definitely you are welcome for that! Hoping for more soon on that …

Please, SEGA Staff… Release outside Japan Phantasy Star Generation:1&2 and finish the Trilogy by remaking Phantasy Star 4, as it was originally planned…
Really, please!

Thanks for translating these! It’s nice to finally have the whole series available to play again.
But we’re still missing the arcade version of Wonderboy. Please bring that next!
Once again, thanks!

The VC version of Monster World IV will be in English like the XBLA/PSN versions, right? The pre-release media seems to be a little vague on this point.

Sega’s 1985 game Sega Ninja (Ninja Princess in Japan) had a female protagonist before either game mentioned. Quartet (1986) also had a female hero named Mary.

Strider, SSFII online, Super Hang-on and now Monster Land and Monster World IV.
Sega does what Nintendon´t (support the VC and give better options with the gamegear VC)

Just to clarify, the version being released for the Virtual Console IS going to be in English, right?

I hope these will also be released on PSN soon, including Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap which is the best Wonder Boy game.

Wait, Wonder Boy in Monster Land? That is already on the Wii VC. Came out January 26, 2009. Is it the Arcade version of Monster Land? I wanted to own that game, but the Wii only got the Master System version.

SEGA, why do Wii owners have to pay $10 per title while PSN XBLA pay $10 for all three Monster World games???
WTF???

Just like Hector (#10) said, it’s great that there’s people other than me wishing for the same.
PSN, XBoxLIVE, WiiWare, even Steam, but please, try to release them both and if possible remake PS4 so the Trilogy is complete.

Hey everyone — regarding screens, sorry, the wrong ones were in place. The correct ones for Virtual Console are now up! You can click on the images to see the rest of our set for these games, as well. Hope you enjoy!

Will Monster World IV run at 60Hz on PAL Wiis like with every other import game?
Posted by BSonirachi on May 4th, 2012 at 5:36 pm
Comment # 23
Alex Rushdy, you can blame Nintendo for setting the prices, not Sega. All Genesis games are 800 points as standard with import games costing 100 points more. Arcade games vary but the larger the game, the more likely the more points it will cost.

It is a very good initiative to make this awesome game available legally, although I didn’t like the english font used by the official upcoming release here

but whatever, I am excited!

@BSonirachi
“every other import game?”
I think you mean every other import game EXCEPT the ones put out by SEGA. So far all of SEGA’s imports have been forced into 50hz with borders and slower gameplay. This is DESPITE being falsely advertised as 60hz only on the Wii shop (until myself and others complained to Nintendo and this line was taken down) and still costing 100 points extra.
With all the extra work that has gone into translating MWIV it will be a nothing short of a joke if Sega botches the PAL conversion by cramming it into its 50hz only emulator.

beatlefreak — couldn’t agree more. Zillion is one of my all-time favorites (it also had some incredible music). I don’t get to decide what games are re-released, but I promise that I suggest it whenever I’m able.
