Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II Launches, True Blue Initiative Returns!Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II begins rolling out today! This new entry in the Sonic 4 storyline has the iconic blue hedgehog taking on two legendary rivals with the help of one of his oldest friends, Miles “Tails” Prower. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II is available today on the PlayStation Network and Steam for $14.99/€12.99/£9.99/AUD$18.25. It will be available tomorrow on Xbox LIVE Arcade for 1200 points, as well as NVidia Tegra 3 powered devices on Android for $6.99/ AUD$7.49/€5.49/ £4.99. On 17th May, it will be available for iPhone and iPad on the iTunes App Store for $6.99/ AUD$7.49/€5.49/ £4.99. “Sonic 4 Episode II is very special because we’ve integrated community feedback into the game.” said Haruki Satomi, Senior Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “We have some of the most loyal and dedicated fans and I hope they enjoy this next chapter in the Sonic 4 saga.” Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II also offers players who have purchased Sonic the Hedgehog™ 4 Episode I the exclusive chance to experience Episode Metal, a special unlockable story available to anyone who owns both titles on the same platform. Lead one of our hero’s greatest foes, Metal Sonic, across four reworked Acts from Episode I to learn more about how he survived the events at the end of Sonic CD.
Sonic 4 Episode II and Episode Metal will also be coming to all other Android Device systems this June, and Windows Mobile Phones by this July. For more information about the game, visit http://www.sonicthehedgehog4.com/. The True Blue Initiative, Episode IIWhen Episode I launched, we wanted to pay a special thank-you tribute to everyone who purchased multiple copies of the game. We called it the True Blue Initiative, and it’s back for Episode II! Anyone who picks up two or more versions of the game will be included in a special video, featuring me and Ken Balough, to be posted on the SEGA America YouTube channel, the SEGA Blog, The SEGA forums, the Sonic Facebook, and the SEGA Twitter. This will be a sort of MVP list that will document all of the fans out there who went above and beyond to help support the game. (Rumor has it that interested parties may also request that Ken present his thank you in Spanish, and he will actually do so. Es loco!) Those fans who have the determination to grab four versions of the game will also be in the video, but as a special bonus thank you, will also receive a mini-poster featuring artwork from Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II that is signed by the Sonic 4 team at SEGA of America. Pretty awesome! Here are the details:
The wait is over! Go play some Sonic 4 Episode II, and thanks for being True Blue fans!

I have a question; What if we bought Episode 1 on the Nintendo Wii and not the 360 or PS3 systems? Is there still a way for those people to receive the benefits of the Metal Sonic DLC?

Woot. Just purchased my steam copy thanks to Steam Wallet Credits at GameStop. Now to pick up some MS points to get a 360 copy. Thanks Sega.
Also. Does the Sonic 4 Episode Metal come unlocked or do you have to finish Episode II before you can play it. (I already own Episode I through steam.)

Oyajitchi – no, you must own Episodes 1 & 2 on the same platform to unlock Episode Metal.
João Vítor – yes, but it will not be out for your device until next month.
ILoveSonic – yes, you will get a receipt for your purchase and you can just submit a screenshot of that. XBLA doesn’t issue receipts so I added instructions to the blog on how to do that.
Bman1991 – an excellent question! Yes, we will accept this as one of the platforms.

Dear Princess Celestia,
Today, I found out that Sega keeps on giving an entire 3rd of their fan base the short end of the stick by not releasing their games on various platforms either promptly or at all. Even with Windows Phone Users getting the game well after their console counterparts get it, Keeping the game from ever seeing a Nintendo Console when a good deal of us bought Episode 1 on the Wii seems like a poor move and a good way to alienate fans. While I still love the Sonic franchise, having to tolerate this bad judgement call is a lot harder than it should be.
Your Student,
Twilight Sparkle

I’m a great sonic fan, really. But i don’t see any interest in buying four times the same game, especially when they are exactly the same. Buying ep I to get metal episode is one thing, and i’m ok with that. But even if i’ll be happy to have a mini poster signed by the team, i can’t afford buying many times the same game! Should find a smarter way to make money guys…

I mad because you didn’t put sonic segal all star racing transformed on Wii. SEGA are you going to pu sonic 4 episode 2 out on the Wii U that would be awesome. by the way you let down a lot of sonic fans when you annoucend it would not be on the Wii. why even put episode 1 on thier if i can’t complete the adventure.

Interestingly enough for anyone following this blog. I’m an Australian resident on the east coast. According to http://www.sega-australia.com/games/sonic-the-hedgehog-4-episode-2/
The game is out on Xbox live arcade, when indeed it is now almost after 6pm on the 16th and we don’t have access to it yet. Other sources place it as a 16th release date for Australia as well. I now regret buying episode 1 on xbox (well regret even more as it was one of the single worst games in the franchise) as it has left myself stuck waiting. I’d prefer to be waiting for a hard copy, which leads to the other problem of no physical copy for my Sonic people like myself who collect the series as well. Maybe a combined collectors edition physical copy when all the possible episodes are completed and the story arc is finished?

I don’t see buying 4 games of the same copy either, even if there is a reward for doing so.
I will enjoy the game regardless but those who are buying 4 of the same game must have money to burn when you could put that to other SEGA games that get little recognition!

The Tablet is only a year old, and Tegra 3 JUST came out..
Will still probably buy the plain ol Android Version
Hopefully it’s not missing TOO much from THD version..

wow! ramping up sales numbers with a promotion that requires people to buy four copies of the game. this is low, even for you sega. the sad thing is, as disgusted as I am, I would actually consider getting the game for steam if i could get the metal sonic thing. but i previously bought ep 1 on the wii. and that wasnt even worth any of what i payed for it simply because they didnt do a proper port to the lower resolution. the game was so zoomed in it was almost unplayable. not to mention the terrible injustice done to the music in all versions of the game. still, if i could get a refund i would gladly buy both of them on steam. but i know that’ll never happen. and with this latest scam, i dont know if ive got the stomach to ever look at a sega game again.

@unoblink — yes, just send us your receipts and we’ll send you a poster.
If you don’t want to buy multiple copies of the game… or heck, if you don’t want to buy even one copy of the game, that’s totally fine. Of course we love when people buy our game, but the point of this is not to sell more games, it’s to say thanks to the fans who do buy multiple copies of the game. If that’s not you, it’s totally fine. Nobody is required to participate!

I enjoyed the PC version of Sonic 4 Ep. 2, but I’m unable to play the iPod Touch version of it. Every time I press the app, the game fails to load. I’ve tried several methods, including the ones mentioned in the SEGA Customer Service about this problem. The game still refuses to load. I think the problem may be with the app, as I’ve never had this problem with SEGA’s other games for the iOS.

Joshua Carraway I’ve figured out what’s happened now. In their efforts to try and make the physics more like the Genesis games they have made Sonic slower. It’s to the point where even Sonic has better acceleration in Episode I. I think they took that whole “speed as a reward” thing too literally. When you curl into a ball and go down a hill you don’t gain speed like you should. Instead, you stay the same speed and in some instances still slow down just like in Episode I. Also, you barely get ANY acceleration from the spin dash. The spin dash is almost useless in Sonic 4. If they could combine the speed and acceleration from episode I and the physics from episode II and fine tune it by studying the Genesis games they could easily have the gameplay perfected for episode III if they decide to make it. All this complaining about the physics and speed makes it sound like I hate the game but in actuality I do not. I actually really like the game and enjoyed playing through it. The story was great, the levels were surprisingly a good mix of old and new, and the music was very good overall besides a couple of duds. I think it is definitely an improvement over Episode I but it’s those small little things that really affect the gameplay and if they make an Episode III I really hope they get it right. I think it was just a case of not really understanding the Genesis physics and therefore, not making them correctly. Maybe someone fro the community should work on episode III similar to how Christian Whitehead did on the Sonic CD port. It needs to be someone who thoroughly understand the physics from the Genesis games. That or beg Yuji Naka to come back and program the physics himself. One can only dream!
Posted by Joshua Carraway on May 18th, 2012 at 1:50 am
Comment # 54
Also, this HAS to be said. How is it that the physics and speed are nearly SPOT ON for Sonic Generations but still falling short on Sonic 4 Ep. 2. Maybe Sonic Team was more directly involved with Generations than Sonic 4. Is it Dimps that does most of the work on those episodes? If so, then they need to be taken off of the Sonic 4 project completely.

Jun Senoue completely, horribly, utterly, totally, undeniably, sickeningly, disgustingly, irritatingly, revoltingly, SUCKS at making music using classic instruments.
For Episode 3, simply hire the Dreams Come True musicians again along with the lead composer for Sonic 1 and 2 Naofumi Hataya. Or at least just one of the other. Pay them whatever they want and quit being cheap using some Japanese hillbilly rocker to make such ear bleeding 16 bit techno music.

I’m getting a copy of the game for the iphone, for Steam, and for Xbox live. I don’t own a PSN device or an Android phone, though so I am unable to purchase a 4th copy of the game from them. Is it ok if my 4th copy is one of the following?:
- The ipad version of the game
- A second copy on steam that I gift to a friend (I saw Bman’s post, just wanted to confirm).
Please let me know, I’ll pretty much buy whatever it takes to qualify.
