Phantasy Star Online 2 is Coming WestPhantasy Star Online 2 is on its way to North America and Europe! SEGA’s newest and most advanced online multiplayer game ever — and successor to the revolutionary Phantasy Star Online — will be making its way on PC to North America, where it will land in 2013 as a Free to Play title! Of Journeys Past …Let’s travel back in time for a moment: to the days of Sega Net and the Dreamcast, and something unprecedented: a multiplayer adventure, combining arcade action, dungeon crawling, and RPG progression with a sci-fi story blended with fantasy spirit. The original Phantasy Star Online helped to usher in the age of the MMO while introducing SEGA and Phantasy Star to a new generation of gamers. Phantasy Star Online broke new ground while resolutely doing its own thing—in particular, weaving action-based multiplayer combat through a deeply-entrenched story. Now, the story continues for a new generation of online games and new ways to play and explore, while embracing a free to play model and building the game around that. There are, of course, lots of details to be revealed about this model — we know everyone has questions about how “Free to Play” will work for the Western version of PSO2, so stay tuned! The New Journey BeginsPhantasy Star Online 2 will find players joining the “Arks” organization as part of the Oracle Fleet – a group of spaceships traveling through the far reaches of the galaxy, with the mission to explore and research newly discovered planets. The game recaptures the sense of adventure and discovery of the original PSO, with players finding their way through uncertain territory while working together — the game is designed so you can adventure alone and explore at your own pace, but has a heavy emphasis on teamwork as well, making unprecedented group encounters possible. Starting the game in a central hub reminiscent of the original PSO, players will find join a futuristic living space with the chance to learn about their missions, meet other players, and set off to explore challenging new worlds. Embark on the game’s story, and encounter the mysterious D-Arkers — a malevolent force challenging those who would venture into the depths of space. Together, intrepid players may be able to unravel the mysteries of Phantasy Star, but one thing is for sure: from Rappies to MAGs; from player housing to massive boss encounters, with teamwork and skillful action combat, Phantasy Star is back to provide all new worlds of adventure. Infinite Adventure and Infinite CustomizationThere’s a lot to tell you about and a lot to look forward to – in the coming months we’ll talk about the various features of PSO2. Here are some starting points to ponder. First, the game features an insanely powerful character creator, giving you unprecedented control over your avatar – change the size and shape of any body part, change height and weight, and — if you play as CAST — re-arrange your parts to your heart’s content to build the robot you want to be. Play as the jack-of-all-trades Humans, the mystical Newman, or the powerful and robotic CAST. From there, you can begin to explore the way the class system is designed to open up your ability to experience and interact with the game world. The game features three different classes to start as: the Force class with their mastery of Photon Arts, the up-close-and-personal combat prowess of the Hunter, and the long-range tactical genius of the Ranger. Leveling in PSO2 is class-based: you level up classes as you choose, allowing you to try out different ways of playing. Making your way through the game you will explore randomized dungeons and have special random encounters – custom-event challenges that happen during the course of a mission, designed to test your skill, nerve, and teamwork. Oh yes — and, making its return from the original Phantasy Star Online, the MAG – a combat assistant you can customize to suit your needs. Ultimately, the game is shaped around the core idea of players extensively customizing their individual weapon combos and upgrading their own skills, combining the character progression of an RPG with the flat-out combat prowess of an arcade-action game. Mix in Phantasy Star’s unique and extensive style and incredible customization, and you have the recipe for an online multiplayer experience unlike any other. For those of you who have traveled with us in the past, through the original RPGs, through the original Online or Portable adventures, or across the Universe: We hope you will make the journey with us to this exciting new realm. If you are new to Phantasy Star, we hope you will join us for a new adventure unlike anything else Online. We are pleased and proud to make this announcement — stay tuned for much more news to come from Phantasy Star Online 2! You can also check out the teaser site at: http://www.pso2.com

D-Arkers…what?
Anyway, the only thing I’m wondering about the english version is the update schedule, if in 2013 it will start with the content the Japanese version had on release or if there’s no simultaneous updates with the japanese version, no way I’m playing in the english version.
“Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you.” Right?

I agree with ezodagrom! Sega please do not make the same mistake that you have made in the past. You want people to support this game and hopefully pay for extra content then you need to start doing simultaneous updates between the USA and Japan. As a player there is nothing more frustrating than to know Japan is always 6 months to 1 year ahead on content. Because of the power of the internet and Youtube fans often view the new released content that Japanese player get to have months before we do only to find out in the end that some of it we will never get or we won’t get any at all. This discourages fans of all level and often make them not want to play or they play less.
When the game is released in 2013, it needs to be released and up to date where ever the Japanese players are and moving forward it needs to have simultaneous updates. I don’t know what plans or marketing strategies you guys have in place, but I seriously hope you consider what I have said. If you don’t believe there is truth to my words then take a look at how poorly PSU did over here. In the beginning there were tons of players, but due to the same repetitive dragon and ruins run the game got stale very fast. You guys just took to long to release content. I hung in till the PC servers went down, but often I felt the game was very stale. It was only because I was such a huge fan of the original DC version is what kept me going.

Can’t… contain… excitement… AWESOME STUFF, SEGA!!! And I fear not about the content ”issue”; one of the reasons I bet it is PC-only is to avoid being delayed by Sony like they were with PS2/PC servers with PSU… although, well ok so it IS coming to the Vita too but, hey, I dunno that version might stick to Japan or, by the time it’s done ”sync up with Westerner release”?… yeah alright let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself!

Let’s make a couple of things very clear, SEGA:
1. When you bring this over, I would highly recommend you keep it exactly as it is in the Japanese version, just with text translation. No mechanic changes, no censoring, no item removal, no nonsense.
2. You have a HORRIBLE habit of either removing content released in Japanese versions or never releasing it at all and ending up months, if not years, behind them in content patches and upgrades. None of this crap this time.
3. If Japan gets special items/costumes/etc? We get them too. This is mandatory, especially after the debacle that was Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity: No Export For U Edition.
Right now, the vast majority of us are playing the Japanese version online via the beta. If you want us to migrate to the Western release, don’t give us reason to look at it as the “lesser” version below the Japanese edition.
Thank you.

I have been playing the Japanese version and it is a blast! Though I am curious about two things: On the japanese client, there is a drop down menu where we are able to choose more than one language, even though at the moment only Japanese is able to be selected. Does that mean that there is a chance that we will be sharing the same servers with the Japanese players? Also, will their be a beta period or will we jump right into it?

SEGA,
please learn from all the mistakes you made with PSU. Keep PSO like it was and still is. I hope we will again get Servers where players from all over the world can play together, like the EU US JP shiplists in PSO. And please bring back the word select, it was and still is a unique masterpiece of global ingame communication. The PSO spirit is still very strong, so don’t fool us. Don’t you remember the days the Dreamcast servers were shut down? Full servers were noone more could join as the limit was reached, everyone crying in nostalgy?
Please, stay at the roots with PSO.

@Questions about Vita/etc: We don’t have any additional information about other versions of the game at this time — I promise we’ll post if we do.
@Questions about content: It’s a huge concern for us, something we realize was an issue from PSU, and something we want to do our best to address for PSO2. I do think that there’s greater opportunity for you, the players: remember, this game is free to play. I do think we have an obligation to make sure the versions are as near to each other as possible; you don’t have to spend $60 on this and you don’t have to spend for a subscription, so the game is there for you to evaluate as you see fit.

@Edward 2013 is way to long. Memory serves me, in the past, different versions of PSO came out a month from each other. Can’t you tell them to just translate the subtitles and menus? Surely it won’t take that long.

@pso2love Past versions were at least a few months apart or more — in the case of PSU remember that it was just PSU, not AOTI, and for many, it simply was not a complete game experience until AOTI. So there are risks in trying to get everything out as close together as possible.
The thing is this is a huge project with a new model (free to play) that we want to get right. We will want to see how the “transaction” portions of the game work and make sure they work for our audience (all of that stuff is more complicated than just the localization, in some ways). The localization and setting up of servers and testing and everything is additional time. I know 2013 is a long time to wait — especially when the game is right there in Japan.
We’ll get there! In the meantime I hope I can show you enough of what’s going on to keep you all interested in the game, and when it launches I hope you’re all still excited for it.

Separate servers?
If so, a lot of people are going to stick to JP. We’ve already got characters on there that’re gonna be maxed out by the time the game launches here! Not only that, but after how far behind PSU got… Please try to get them to link the servers! Do it for the fans who want to see the game prosper!

I’ll believe that when I see it, even if the english version starts with content as near as possible to the Japanese version, I honestly don’t believe you guys will be able to keep a steady rate of updates for years, especially after PSU went from just a 2 months gap to over 1 year and half.

@Edward Yes, after PSO, SEGA has been lagging on localizations and updates… Which is why THIS game is in hopes of changing the currently “poor” image of SEGA. We, the die-hard fans want this game done right, within reasonable time.
“In the case of PSU remember that it was just PSU, not AOTI, and for many, it simply was not a complete game experience until AOTI. So there are risks in trying to get everything out as close together as possible.”
You’re telling me that you guys can’t translate the game until it is finished over in Japan?
If that’s the case, I better start learning Japanese then. >.<
"The thing is this is a huge project with a new model (free to play) that we want to get right. SOJ has had 3 alphas and 3 betas, in during that time, they ALREADY tested these things out. They wouldn't release the official in JPN if it wasn't working. If SOA was really serious and truly excited about releasing this game to satisfy the fans of old and new in NA/EU, they would realize that excuses are no longer acceptable. Yes, we know that it takes time and money to do these things, but we gave you 6 extra months… 6 EXTRA MONTHS… and now you're telling us that it's going to be 6 more? Please send me an email of someone at SEGA I can talk to about funding for this title. I'm serious.
Also, can you tell the designer of the pso2.com website to please clean up the site? At least get the music to play at normal speed.

pso2love — I’m not sure you quite took my meaning, but that’s okay. If you either don’t believe what we’re saying, or just want to respond to it with hostility, then there isn’t much to discuss (because that isn’t a discussion).
The game takes as long as it takes, let’s put it that way. We’ll take the time we need to make it and make it right (I’m not sure you ‘gave us’ that time).
You aren’t being asked to pre-purchase anything. This IS news we’re excited about — I definitely am. I honestly can’t speak to what every part of the schedule is used for, though I can say it’s more complicated than you’re willing to accept, if your assumption that Japan testing in alpha/beta means that at the same time we should have doing X Y or Z. What I said about schedules and releases is to give you a general idea of some of the concerns that go into planning a major release — please don’t read into that just because you’re unhappy with having to wait for a game.
I am sorry if you’re feeling like none of this interests you — I promise I’ll be here either way to talk about everything I can for the game, if you change your mind.

@Edward Nothing hostile about my previous comment. I’m not attacking SEGA nor you, good sir, I am asking you about certain things for clarity for those who are deeply interested in this title, and I am addressing everything that has been going on while SOA has been silent for the past 2 years about this game, except for Aaron Weber of course.
I apologize for not clarifying. You’re right, I can’t assume you were involved with the mishaps of PSU. You just seem to be the only one at SEGA talking about this game at the moment.
However, I am serious about investing in SEGA concerning this title, which is why I’m asking you to refer me to someone I can talk to about funding by sending me an email. It should be listed by my screen name. A phone number perhaps so I can schedule an appointment.
The pso2.com website is but a personal request. Please request that they at least speed the music back to its original speed. In comparison with the pso2.jp website, it could use a little more shiny.

I also would request that rather than different servers for America, more ships be added to the already existing servers. Allowing that kind of global interaction between players would, in it’s own way, enhance the exploration aspect at the core of Phantasy Star Online 2, letting us meet and interact with and communicate with players outside our country. I’d imagine that in the PSO universe, there are indeed different languages and dialects between peoples of the same race – it seems fitting to allow that within the game as well.

This game seems amazing, I sure would like some more information about the game (in general). From my understanding this game is free and the “pre-open” beta has ended so basically everyone can play it at any time now, right? It appears as it’s only in JP language as of now but I know alot of people who would like to at least be able to play it in english (even though this is the JP Beta release). And I would deffinately like to see more gameplay footage.
What specs do you need to run this game, and how do you get to play it (Beta version). I appreciate your work on this game and I hope I get to play it at one point or an other. And I’m glad to see replies here and there from a Sega employe.
My final words are: Is there a slight chance that PSO2 would come to the Wii U. Rather dumb question, I suppose. You’re probably not even allowed to answer on that at this point.

Having been mostly mollified by your reassurances, Edward, I have a few comments to make. As it has been said before, SEGA has a tremendous opportunity here to deliver on promises they made with Phantasy Star Universe that the fans have clung to for years. One of the things I think most of us would like to see is a global Phantasy Star community. One of the things that made games like Final Fantasy XI and the original PSO so enticing was the breakdown of language barriers with universally symbolic language translation systems such as PSO’s auto-word function, enabling shared JP, NA, and EU servers, and I sincerely hope you will work on making that a reality for PSO2 as well. Also, I know many of us will be investing a lot of time into the Japanese version that is already out, especially with a team already working on a translation hack. (Yes, not legit, I know.) All I ask in that regard is to be able to transfer that progress smoothly and seamlessly to the western versions, even in the case of regionally separate servers.
Finally, thank you for your time and patience in reading and responding to our comments – it means a lot to us to know that Sega’s actually listening.

Sega. PLEASE DO NOT SCREW THIS UP!
As mentioned by others:
1 – Same content as the original (JP) release, no removal/censoring BS. Rate it M if you have to (though doubtful but w/e).
2 – Global servers but with region-specific servers available to let us either choose the one closest to us for better ping or allow us to play globally with others.
3 – MARKET TEST YOUR CASH SHOP! Market test it market test it market test it market test it! MARKET TEST YOUR CASH SHOP! Do I have to repeat that? Set reasonable prices on stuff we need (inventory expansions), and make completely unreasonably overpriced stuff that is purely cosmetic for those who want it.
Better yet, let us expand our inventory in-game with in-game money. No cash shop traps needed. You want to know a good F2P model? Aion from NcSoft went F2P. Best damn thing they ever did and it is fantastic. Better customer support from them (for free) than I ever got from the WoW Blizztards Corporation.

Being as my previous comment is awaiting moderation (someone get on that, please.) I will simply state that I agree with Benjamin and pso2love: omitting ANYTHING from localization is going to forever fracture the international community between local and JP servers, with users of the former being content with their version, and users of the latter playing to get all the extra stuff.

Do you know what would go well with an excellent localization of Phantasy Star Online 2? A western release for Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity.

I say, give Sega a chance. As Edward mentioned they want to get it right. The game is free to play so there is no big risk in playing in the end. Yeah, its very obvious that PSU was beating a dead horse but I feel now that its in a different ballpark that it might be a turn from the impression PSU gave to die-hard fans.
I understand the fears, I too hated how PSU was implemented so I don’t blame anyone for being fearful of the news but since the game is free there really isn’t nothing to lose in the end. Try it, like it? Then play! Try it, don’t like it? Its alright at least you gave it a shot without spending a dime, right?

So — there’s a lot of comments here, and opinions, and advice, and .. offers of financial consultation?
But what I’m taking away from that is, there’s a lot of hard core fans who want to see the game do well; who have strong opinions about franchise. If it makes those of you with questions and concerns feel better: none of this is surprising to hear, and it’s built on the lessons of what we’ve been learning for years now.
We’re going to do our best to bring the version of the game you want to the West. You’ll have the chance to see and decide for yourselves if it’s something you are excited about, and I’ll do my best to answer questions and support the game.

Where’s the right place for fans to express their interests and enthusiasms regarding the voice acting localization. is it here? the sega.com forums? @Sega on twitter? @Phantasystar on twitter? It would be awesome if we could maybe affect or at least know as things happen who’s going to be voicing characters for this game.

@Edward. I think there is some cause for concern with many of the comments we’ve seen from you. Namely, it seems to be that your opinion is that the game is free to play so now we have no right to complain about the possibility of bad western support. That simply isn’t true. It was certainly worse that you charged us for shoddy and horribly delayed service on PSU, but making this game free to play doesn’t make it ok to continue in that way.
You know what we want to hear. Ideally, we’d have global servers. That would ensure we don’t get left behind by the Japanese side of the community. It’s really painful to see so many of SEGA’s most faithful and enthusiastic couples constantly be treated as second class citizens because we were born too far west. We’d like to be treated with respect regardless of our nationality, but time and again SEGA has shown that their western customers, despite being PAYING customers are worth less to them than their Japanese consumers.
So what you can do to alleviate a lot of peoples concerns is to explain to us how this time it’s going to be different. Be open and be clear. Stop with the cryptic responses. We need to know that we will NOT be behind Japan in terms of content. Not for a year, or a month, or even a week. That we will not be denied content that the Japanese servers get. Or ideally, that we’d be able to play on a global server with the Japanese players, although that one may be asking a bit too much.
So, what say Edward and SEGA? Can you step up to the challenge? I fully expect this reply to be ignored. But I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that SEGA is finally turning a new page and trying to listen to it’s fans.

For those who are actually considering playing this game, just play on the Japanese servers. If you haven’t gotten the hint by now from Phantasy Star Universe, Sega of America will not hold this game to its original glory. Sorry to say, but you should just give your hopes up. This Edward or whatever may say things, but saying and doing are two entirely different things.

Hello,
Edward I will say you have been one of the only few to relay info. through out SoA. For that I thank you! But you need to listen to the fans for this game. After all, we will be the ones paying for the extra content. We are the die-hard fans, and want to see this game excel. So please do the following:
1. Make the servers global. Just add onto JP’s servers. If that fails then make our JP characters movable to the NA/EU release. Yes, this may take some money and time. But take the time. I atleast want the game to be good instead of throwing everything to be thrown together. That is what cripples a game.
2. Keep the game the same as the JP. It is perfect as it is now.
3. Don’t put the prices to much! If you want the game to bring in money then you can’t put the prices too high for the average buyer. People will say “it is just a game and its free, why should I pay? ” To make that not an issue keep the prices minimal, but yet still keep up a profit.
4. Make a 360(or the next microsoft console) version. That is the version that stayed the longest. So it is only fair to keep it going.
Thanks,
Windorf

Hello, Edward and those at Sega of America reading this. I’m very excited and relieved that PSO2 is coming to the west. I tried the Japanese beta and liked the game play, but didn’t play much more because I really wanted to understand the story.
My only real concern about the Western release is in regards to voice acting. I was really bummed out when I purchased AOTI and, instead of getting dubbed dialog, got absolutely no spoken dialog sans the opening and ending movie. I was doubly bummed when I purchased Phantasy Star Portable 2 and experienced the same thing. No spoken dialog sans the FMVs.
I really appreciated the work and effort that went into the dubbing of Phantasy Star Portable 1 and I appreciated, but didn’t understand, the work that went into the spoken dialog of the Japanese PSO2 beta.
I’m really hoping that the Western version of PSO2 includes English voice acting for all the same spoken dialog as the Japanese version. If there is no money to pay for dubbing or Sega decides not to dub it, can you at least try to push for leaving the Japanese voice acting in? I’d really prefer a dub but, if that’s not possible, I could at least get a sense of emotion from the tone of voice from the Japanese voice acting.
Thanks so much for reading and acknowledging my input and thanks again for bringing this game over here.

For now, let’s remind ourselves that Edward is the representative, not the decision maker. Until he gives us reason to think otherwise, I believe that he’ll convey our concerns to SEGA. That’s all we can ask for. Bear in mind that if SEGA screws us all again, they’ll be screwing Edward too since he’s the go-between for now, so he doesn’t have a reason to mislead us yet.
Let’s not hammer on the man.

@Benjamin – Exactly! Edward can only convey our comments and concerns to SOA, he is not SOA entirely. I apologize if Edward took my comments as being hostile, for they were not directed solely at him. Yes, I still believe that 6 more months is still too long, however, I am praying that what he says will come to pass. “We’re going to do our best to bring the version of the game you want to the West.”
As far as having this game on 360, @Windof, you will need to contact Microsoft, as they seem to be silent on the issue of hosting F2P MMORPG games on their console. Last I heard, they were thinking about it… and that was way over a year ago. Maybe asking Microsoft to allow this game on the 360 would help.

This makes me happy. I’ve been really excited to get in and play the game. And without wanting to sound demanding, I really do think it would be neat if it would be possible for the US players to play with the Japanese and Global communities. Different people and cultures coming together to battle space monsters on far away worlds? How cool is that, huh!? And I really think that with an intuitive enough interface for doing so, it would really only be a boon to the game, Sega, and most importantly the community.

Well at the very least the game is being released to the west. Valkyria Chronicles 3 wasn’t so lucky, I just wish to get some sign that there is chance to see a localized version of the game, on any system at whatever price, because petitions and fan translations of the game paint the picture that there is no feasible chance of this.
At least the browser card game of Valkyria Chronicles demonstrates that Sega hasn’t abandoned the series, and hopefully that there is another Valkyria Chronicles game in the near future.
But I am losing hope that Sega has any plans to release any more Valkyria Chronicles game to the west.

I’ve been noticing an unsettling trend lately in regards to localization of games from Japan. Very few of them permit players to actually play and interact with other international players. I’m sure we can all recognize PSU as one of the earlier games to use this method. This is actually a really important facet that could be a very big game changer, as it was with Armored Core V. I want to be able to play with my friends in England, Japan, France, South Korea, etc. I myself find the spirit of MMO games to be to utilize the internet to allow players across the world to play together, and enjoy their time with others across the world. As it has been lately, I can’t pick up a game localized from Japan, and play with a friend in England. There’s nothing multiplayer about a game that restricts you from being able to play with anyone outside your continent. Armored Core V could’ve been great… but we couldn’t play with the Japanese or even English. We were restricted to just ourselves, unable to play our favorite game with half our friends. What I’m getting at is this: will this ready-to-be-amazing game attempt to get between me and my friends?

Because I for one (don’t speak for everyone) would buy 20/50$ PSN cards just for this game..

That all goes along with what the version WE want to the West, and that includes the Vita, iOS/Android versions as well. Surely, this should not be a problem, for like the PC version, all they have to do is translate the text into English. All the formats are tied to the exact same server, plus as I have stated many times before in other blogs, the other formats are going to grab people’s attention, as they already have when JPN made the announcement. Why would SOA NOT want to have these versions released in the West, and earn more money because of it? The point of making a F2P game, is to entice more people to play by letting them play the base game for free, giving them n experience like no other, so they would be persuaded to buy things from the cash shops. Ultimately, WE the fans/players will be the ones buying the Arks Cash items and services to support this game. If they want OUR money, they will need to do exactly what they are setting out to do… To do their best to bring the version of the game WE want to the West.

Like everyone else has been saying. I want to play the same game, just translate it. Charge for costume enhancements, fancy mags, but dont charge for core items, take a page from schthacks book. use the incentives they do like double exp, if you do this right you will have players forever. but right now there are alot of Americans dealing with katakana and hirigana trying desperately to play the game.
if nothing else can you put out an English version. at the very least

pso2love, there are factors you don’t seem to be considering here. A localization costs a lot more than just a translation team’s salary, you have directors and quality managers and in-house testing and all kinds of work that has to be done on the localization side. It’s actually a huge investment. They also have to factor in how well they think each specific item of content would be received in a localized environment, be it costumes or My Room content or entire cross-platform versions of the game itself. Why would SoA NOT want them released in the west, you ask? Simply put, they have to know it will sell, or they will LOSE money, and when it comes down to the bottom line, it’s a board of shareholders that a public corporation has to answer to, not necessarily the die-hard fans. This is why World of Warcraft has gone so far downhill recently.
That said, I’m feeling pretty good about this. Iris is right, Edward is in fact implying that Sega is learning from their past mistakes, and if they start feeling optimistic about how the Vita and Mobile versions will do, they’ll announce them too.

I do think that some of those who are instantly focused in on how things “have” to be to make it good are possibly missing the forest through the trees: I don’t want to dismiss your concerns, because that’s not my job, but I do think there’s a hyper-focus on certain things.
I do understand: you’re looking at what you feel are mistakes made with PSU — regardless of the reasons for them, you view them as negatives. “Entitled” is a pretty harsh word, but maybe not totally unfair. At the same time, it’s not unreasonable to want a good game experience for your time. That’s what we all want, right?
And again, yes, I get the concerns. I’ve been with PSU for a long time now and I’ve seen the community response from a lot of different angles. Again, nothing here is a surprise to me, which is good. It means we’re on the same page.
pso2love, in particular: I have gathered you are a passionate fan. I get the sense you’ll enjoy the game regardless, but you don’t want to “let us off the hook” for what you feel are important details. At the same time, you don’t speak for everyone. It doesn’t mean your concerns are baseless, but you can’t say how everyone feels, or even the majority. Again, I am not saying you are wrong, but be careful in how you present your concerns.
Overall: We just announced this game for the West. Concerned or not, I think most of you are excited (I am — seriously. It’s a joy to get to work on this and I’m excited for what’s to come). We haven’t released any additional details about the game at this time. As we DO release details, please ask your questions and raise your concerns — that’s mostly all I ask. In the meantime, I think we will all have a better experience if there’s a willingness to wait and see how the game actually shapes up.

Yay, I finally finished all the interesting comments, some a bit meh.
Let’s see if they allow my post, I’m just being honest.
–I do think we have an obligation to make sure the versions are as near to each other as possible;—-
Versions, your language, as mentioned by others scares me to believe die hard or even moderate fans won’t get their wishes, and casual gamers won’t care, “weee swing the sword” “yellow penguin?”…
—-please don’t read into that just because you’re unhappy with having to wait for a game—-
I just cringe at this kind of talk, its just the way you say “a game” like it’s nothing? there are many other activities that don’t work on comprehension skills, reading skills, hand to eye coordination, communication skills, etc. etc. like “a game” does, for someone in your position to refer to one of the most popular past times around by using the word “a” infront of it….*cringe* I could go on…
—-I’d trust SEGA with MMOs over Square Enix who made a mess of the XIV MMO any day.—
The reason XIV WAS the way that it WAS, is due to SE trying to cater to the “casual gamers”, man, remember those nintendo games, supernintindo games, where you had to be a dedicated gamer, as if it was a considered a hobby among the other lame hobbies out there as opposed to being just a “a game”, heh
—-@Edward As I did some google searching earlier this morning, I came across the # for Sega Of America in San Francisco. You need not send me an email now. Please, continue to inform us of what they relay to you concerning this game that we are all excited for. Have a great day, good sir.——
I would love for pso2love to get in there and just get a few words out, to represent the fans, global servers, global servers, global servers, id loved dc version, but screw it if we can’t get consoles, id rather a great game over console release, global servers lol
—I say, give Sega a chance. As Edward mentioned they want to get it right. The game is free to play so there is no big risk in playing in the end.—–
this is beyond ridiculous, your saying a game we’ve been asking for on multiple forums for years, a game that we grew up with, a permanent memory in our lives, your saying that b/c its free, we just have to deal with? could you clarify that for me? because, wow, casual gamers are kickin our butts in the gaming world, we got console press conferences with usher(who i don’t even owns any) and dumb bimbos dancing on stage, games, games, games, globalization lol
—-I understand the fears, I too hated how PSU was implemented so I don’t blame anyone for being fearful of the news but since the game is free there really isn’t nothing to lose in the end. Try it, like it? Then play! Try it, don’t like it? Its alright at least you gave it a shot without spending a dime, right?—-
I’m sorry bro, I really don’t think you understand, I don’t, gonna call you an hour a day gamer

Hey PSOD. First, some comments may not show up here right away. A lot of them await approval, and there’s a lot of comments, so they may not show up immediately. I do see them all eventually.
First, there are no details about the game in the West yet, except that it is coming West. When I talk about the Western version, well, you’re going to be downloading a client that is localized — that’s all I mean by “version”. I have literally nothing else to impart yet.
“An hour a day gamer” — c’mon now. I might call you a “high school gamer”. As in, you still have a ton of free time. Growing up and getting a job doesn’t mean you aren’t still a serious gamer. A lot of us — myself included — don’t often have more than an hour a day (except on the weekends!). It’ll happen to you one day, too. That doesn’t mean we aren’t serious gamers. If I’m wrong about your age, that’s fine, but, don’t make assumptions that people who argue for being reasonable aren’t “hard core” enough.
And the game being free to play does mean there’s less of a commitment from you — and it requires more from us. It means you don’t have to buy the game AND sign up for a subscription; you can see what the game is like and decide if it is worth your time. That’s the idea. It doesn’t mean the game shouldn’t be as good — in fact, what we really want is for this to be an excellent experience, not just an excellent free to play experience. Someone suggesting that you wait until we actually know something about the game here in the West may, in fact, understand.

So that we’re not constantly re-treading the same things over and over between Edward and the rest of us, I’ll ask a different question – do you know when we might, roughly, get more details on the localization process? Within the next month, or a few months from now, or further? Not asking for super-specifics right now, just curious if there’s a “when” concept present yet for SEGA?
I’ll repeat what I said for everyone earlier – Edward is clearly firmly aware of our concerns, let’s not constantly remind him/hammer on them for the next week in comments. We’ll better represent ourselves as fans by being a bit more reasonable. We’ve said our piece, and now the ball is in SEGA’s court.

You put that in the game and I GUARANTEE you PSO2 will sell like hot cakes. Honestly you should just put in the option to play all of the old music if you wanted to. Hopefully with special events or secret areas we can relive the old forest, ruins etc like they did with PSU.
Come on Sega make it happen and make it happen right! People have been waiting a decade for a TRUE PSO sequel. You have everyone’s attention! You just have to deliver the package correctly.
Please please please do not take anything out of the Japanese version and definitely give us the option to play the game with Japanese voices and English sub titles.

LoL, you could say I’m a high school gamer, I do work though, and sometimes I have a gf, or fwb, but other than me throwing some exercise in there in the future, “for the time being” until I finish school, I game allot, but anyway, focusing on our concerns…
There was a poll on pso2.com, I didn’t vote b/c of the reason you mentioned, we don’t know what you guys are gonna do yet, but we’re speculating based on history and what tidbits have been released and any circumstances, that’s all we can do is speculate, on the other hand, this blog just shows how much we care about what we “highs chool” gamers plan to invest allot of time in for years to come, that’s all.
I know gaming is a large part of my life, its a way for me to communicate w/ friends who live in japan, as i wont b e able to get their for a while, its a way to escape the troubles of this world until we breath no more,
what allot of ppl understand and many more do, is that video games have become much more than an experiment, almost to the point where they should make commercials about it like they do lolfootball(american) and as in other major hobbies activities, or w/e, fans, ppl who keep the producers in business wish to be heard, you’ve made a blog that allows us to vent what people have been discussing for some time now, that’s it, most ppl are still stuck in history, (i was busy playing xi, so i really missed out on allot of psu, played a bit), really thats all were doing is venting, hoping and speculating. …………..sorry, can’t help it but shared servers >.> ganbare!

After reading a majority of the comments posted on this page I can sum most of them up by the following;
This game will be an instant hit thanks to the loyal and hardcore fans who played the DC and CB version and manager to survive the terrible PS3 card version.
We are glad it is free to play as ‘add on content’ seems to be the way forward, but the main concern is that when the west finally gets this game, Japan will be many updates ahead and we will have to start from building block 1.
When we receive the game it should be patched to where the Japanese version is at, gamers are impatient these days yet but if the patches are solving bugs and content then why should the UK and US market have to suffer through the same things that have already been solved.
I can see this becoming another cult classic that I will play with my friends, even though we’ve all grown up I believe this title still have the power to bring gamers together once more.

I read this whole thing through and i understand the situations and the points that are trying to be heard. I really do wish that PSO2 does come out for the Vita. I can promise that i would buy the PC and Vita versions. Along with all the DLC that would release. Of course this cant be stressed enough, but it needs to be heard, constantly for SEGA to really get the picture. WE. NEED. SHARED. SERVERS. NA and EU always get the hand-me-down versions from JP’s version. We would like to be treated with the same consideration that Japan gets. Of course ill say it again. Shared servers, and Vita release in the West. You are right Benjamin. It’s SEGA’s ball.

Just wondering what happened to the fourth character race??? The Beastmen. They were great at melee and could some arts. Originally it was Beastmen for best melee, Casts for best ranged, Newman for best Arts, and Human for a mix of everything. Why are there now only 3 races?? Can someone from Sega explain this to me??

I sure am excited about this title. I hope I get to play it and I have a few questions about it if you don’t mind.
Let’s say you create a character on the jp version will you then be able to use that character/Sega ID on the EU/US version later on?
How many characters are you allowed to have?
How many different language settings will there be in the game?
I certainly assume more than one.
How come the game is/will be free to play?
Not complaining, just wondered. What are the Ark cash all about, what is it for?
And last but not least will there be a challenge/battle mode in the game?
I supppse some of the questions are to early to be answered on.

In response to PSO Fan:
Don’t know about them ever transferring characters between servers, however changing the language on your client isn’t too unreasonable.
You’re allowed 1 character right now in jpso2, but like in psu 1 character can switch between classes.
Right now there’s only 1 language setting (Japanese). However the drop down menu is there and just waiting to be filled!
The game is free to play (just download and play no money needed!) because “p2p mmos are dieing” not my words. You can also buy a physical copy of the game though that comes with some perks.
The Ark cash is how the game gets away with being free to play. basically there is a cash shop (real currency) with in game items you can buy. mostly vanity, some however are beneficial to the game.
and so far there is no battle or challenge mode in the game however theres still so much being added to the game before our release, such as 3 new classes and several weapon types.

Edward,
I really appreciate your work. It’ not easy getting “hits” from both sides, the hardcore fans begging for information, SEGA not wanting you to spread “unofficial” details you’d lovew to spread.
I am sure it would help alot getting in the right mood for PSO looking at the videos made on the last day the PSO Dreamcast servers were online, the fans from that day are still here and their kids grew up with PSO offline or on unofficial private servers.
Right, I am one of those true-hearted PSO fans too, I still have a sealed, untouched Copy of PSOv1 for the Dreamcast whixch is kind of a relic for me.
Some suggestions which could be helpfull for the dev team to get us old-schoold PSO gamers on the hook and ensure a long lifespan of PSO2 could be:
1st: have sth. like a “memorial hall” with textures from the Dreamcast online Lobby playing the original lobby theme “day dawns” As PSO in that days was more gathering in ONE start lobby (not wide spreaded like in PSU) and just chatting (a lot of friends called it the world best chat system) I remeber a lot of weekends we gathered like 7pm, chatting in the lobby with friends all over the world and made a quick forrest run at 1am, “just to have played” It would bring back memories and would be kind of a Wgive sth back” to us players from the first days.
2nd: LobbyBall, it was really fun and i am sure players would love to have it back. A nice idea would be to have official matches you can register to at sega.com or pso2.com with a SEGA GM moderating the game.
3rd: A higher presence of GMs. It would give us the feeling that you are “there”, maybee even joining partys from time to time
4th: As PSO2 will be free to play and sometimes free2play games become bad when there is not enough money to keep servers up to date, bring new vontent… How about the following, having a special item for your room which is a gold / chrome/ whatever statue of your character with a plate on saying sth like “SEGA-ID donated XXXX” you can buy for a certain ammount of real cash minimum but without max. I am sure there are enough players wanting “help out” and pay a lot for an item like that, showing visitors how much they care and love PSO.
Oh and if its easier, just do subtitles in english, menues, item names etc… Lot of games are english only. If it rapidly speeds everything up, delayed “translation patches” would be ok if replaced witrh english were unfinished.
Thanks for reading all of our comments, it’s good to have you here.

Since Sakai announced earlier “due to money exchange in different countries, it will be difficult for all of it to be on same server.”, if that means no global servers, then that means SOA/SOE has a lot of work ahead of them to keep up to date on translation, patches, updates, etc. I find this hard to believe seeing that there was no explanation as to why PSO v1 & v2 was able to have global servers. Version 2 is when you started charging for hunters license, at least in the US.
If there is an explanation for this, I sure would love to hear it.

Thank you for your reply!
I hope that you actually can switch between servers later on.
1 character you say, guess my old cube characters will not see the day-light on PSO2 then, yeah I had plans on re-creating them=P
I wonder how much the physical copy of the game will cost.
And now I know what the ARK cash is for and it makes perfectly sence.
I sure hope challenge/battle mode will be in the game, eventhough I barely did do battle/c-mode runs back in the day on Pso I&II. It would be a nice feature nonetheless.
And yeah I know there alot of stuff beeing added to the jp version. It’s no longer Beta anymore, now they bring new content from time to time (though I assume they did that during Beta as well)
That’s all for now!

WELL, looks like we lost guys, only time will tell now how long our much awaited title will last, I garuantee you our exclusives will not match up to theirs, as I’m primarily a Japanese gamer, I can tell you, it never has, Japan has games and extras, we would cringe at, you’ll find out if you either visit or search online. Sayonara~
Japanese gaming website 4gamer.net recently interviewed Satoshi Sakai, producer for the Phantasy Star Online series. In the interview, Sakai talks about the creation of Phantasy Star Online 2, future updates, and the regional servers. In particular, he mentioned the North American/European servers will not be linked to the Japanese servers.
This turn of events will surely come as a disappointment to those that were expecting globaly linked servers.

Well this wpould mean most players will import the japanese version, turn language setting to english and play on the japanese servers. EU/US servers then will ha ve only few people left.
@SEGA of Japan
Why try to kill your american/european brothers in forcing fans not to choose their version?
Please globalize more, announce new things worldwide. No more like with the DC BBA, it was affordable when coming out in JP and now only special import shops or ebay sell rests at 200 Euros. Nearly all of my DC friends got one or are loving to buy one, some even got 3 DCs all with BBA. Please allow SOA / SOE to spread what you have on new interesting things and give them the chance to order it.
Please link the servers, work together globaly, no more SOJ/SOA/SOE splitting as 3 different companies only having a SEGA in its name in common. Work together globally in developing the game SAME TIME, adding voices, subtitles SAME TIME, doing tests SAME TIME and adding content SAME TIME to LINKED SERVERS.
Working teams more and more become “virtual team” spread all over the world, consider that…

What people don’t seem to understand here is that Sega not globally linking their servers is NOT indicative of a lack of effort or any notion to screw over any part of their fanbase. Rather, it is an issue of copyright and content distribution laws as well as online business regulations. There will be so much content in each update that it LITERALLY will not be possible to square all the deals away in THREE DIFFERENT WORLD REGIONS in time for the updates to come out. What do you want, perfectly identical versions and global servers, or a game that’s updated more than once a year? That said, I still have faith that all the major aspects of the Japanese version will make it into the western versions, and that the only differences will be largely aesthetic. Sega has reassured us repeatedly that they are keenly aware of the issues that broke PSU, so I have it on faith that they are working around the clock to keep each version as similar to one another as possible.

@Iris Caldor I agree with all those points. People are just so scorned that they have no trust left to give Sega. But, they can’t be dumb enough to make the same mistakes again when they’re so blatantly aware of them. What WOULD make my day however, is if they make a point to import major event quests like Maximum Attack and the like when they come out. PSP2 didn’t get a lick of that kind of support, which made no sense as it left the tickets you got from the Kasch mission without a purpose.

I’m going to make three predictions right now based on that Japan’s end has decided “no world servers for you”:
A. Anything that looks remotely like panties or swimsuit bottoms will be changed into shorts in the west. They’ve done this for basically every other regional shift, why stop being nervous about those dastardly puritans now.
B. Enjoy watching Japan get those cool anime-themed outfits from things like Index or Disgaea or Vocaloid and the like – if Infinity was any sign, we won’t be getting any of it (in fact, the last time we got anything like that was in PSP2′s Evangelion plugsuits, and even then we got the censored versions of said costumes while Japan got the saucier ones).
C. Prepare for delays. Lots of them. When Japan gets something new, expect at least three months, if we get it at all in the case of the aforementioned costumes and the like.
I know I said that the ball was in SEGA’s court, but they’ve kicked it dangerously close to the dumpster again. If Nintendo can figure out how to handle copyright and licensing insanity on Tatsunoko VS Capcom on the Wii, SEGA could have figured it out on world servers. They just didn’t want to.
Time will tell if the ball ends up in the actual dumpster or not, but this announcement does not instill grand confidence.

Actually, I’ll amend that slightly, Nintendo proved just a couple of weeks ago that they’re not a shining light of localization either when Club Nintendo of America got massively crapped on while Club Japan ran away with the vault and Club Europe invented it’s own exclusive prizes since the Japanese kids wouldn’t share.
Now that I think on it, doesn’t say much for American companies in general. Or Japan, but Japanese corporations are notoriously xenophobic on a wide scale. Individuals less so, but the big companies, yeah. No Export For You, filthy foreign barbarians.

ya know i been playing this phantasy star crap for a long time now and it’s killing me to see how you shut down servers only to discover that this new one comes out and then your old audience that cherish it so much only 60% from a platfrom doesn’t even get to play this new because you took something we cherish so much and made it then said lets put it on computer plz just do us a big favor and just put it on the add a xbox 360 version in there somewhere just stop trying to make us suffer everytime you feel like you have that chance to do so

“When I talk about the Western version, well, you’re going to be downloading a client that is localized — that’s all I mean by “version”. I have literally nothing else to impart yet.”
so the chance that you just “add ships to the jp server” and have a english website as essentially a facade site is possible?….. having just to translate the game/launcher/new patchs/events?…
so why 2013?….. if this is possible?….
I mean this sounds easy/cheap and fast, but “sounding” and realistic are of course two different things..
p.s thank you… just making a post with something like that… gives me hope….

Is it just me, or is there a typo in the western announcement trailer? “check out the latest updateds” almost like they threw everything in at the last second. The PSO-world.com logo on the website tells me that they have been hearing us the entire time… And yet, SEGA is going about this by watering it down to the western fanbase yet again?
It is really starting to look like SEGA is telling their fans “here you go, you little baby… Now go wait while we pull the wool over your eyes again just like we did with PSU.”
I am fully aware that it was intentional for this game to be f2p from the very beginning, however, In the end, you are asking us ( the players ) for money. I want you to make money. We want this game in English. We don’t want it watered down. The only way you are going to see this game succeeding in the west, is when SEGA actually listens to the greatest concerns that their fans have, and not just hear. You have the chance to break barriers and shine, question is, are you really in the position to risk losing possible money, your hardcore fans, your image, all for the sake of getting by, with the same rubbish, by lying to us? Or are you going to say that your best, is never going to be good enough…
Answer me this, if you can, Edward…
If Nintendo & Steam can handle money from different countries, why can’t SEGA? It seems to be the only excuse not to have global servers.

@djecliptik Where are you getting your information? Where did you hear, at all, that Sega will be watering down the western version pf PSO2, other than some overzealous fans’ speculation?
Also, as I have just explained above, this isn’t about money, it’s about distribution rights, copyright law, and business regulations, which are completely different between each of the three regions in which SEGA currently plans to do business with this game. It’s all right up there in #115; money is not the issue here. It’s unfortunate – I want global servers and simultaneous content updates as much as you or anyone else here – but nothing we can say or do will change that. I’ve accepted that, and it is high time the rest of you did as well.
Another things to keep in mind: exactly how big do you think the hardcore Phantasy Star fanbase is? And for whom exactly how much of us is it that you can truly say you speak?

Though, with that said, SEGA does have a track record here, and I think we’ve all of us been burned by it – the fans and SEGA alike. If SEGA wants to make amends, SEGA should do all it can to make PSO2 everything PSU wasn’t. And if we, the fans, want to see that dream realized, we should do everything to support SEGA, instead of holding our PSU grudges.

From the words of Sakai himself.
A petition to bring PSO2 west was slammed on the official SEGA fb page started June 9th. Exactly one month later, the western announcement was made… Coincidence? O.O
As I mentioned in my previous statement, SEGA has their eye on PSO-world.com , so they recognize where the hardcore fanbase is. You don’t have to take my word for it, just visit the forum and read the comments and concerns of the other fans for yourself.

For further clarification to my question towards Edward, here is the statement made by Sakai:
“Since the laws of handling cash items is different in each country, it’s difficult for them to have everyone share the same server.”
Also this:
“Since game culturalization will be necessary, there may be some changes to the game’s contents to reflect each nation.”
I had no idea that’s what they’re calling it nowadays, “game culturalization”.

“If SEGA wants to make amends, SEGA should do all it can to make PSO2 everything PSU wasn’t. And if we, the fans, want to see that dream realized, we should do everything to support SEGA, instead of holding our PSU grudges.”
I WANT to support SEGA! It’s because I WANT to support SEGA, to be asking these questions about great concerns. Same reason why I believe that the hackers moving the NPC’s on the JPN servers were wanting to support SEGA, by help showing faults that need to be fixed (I am not affiliated, nor am I one of those said hackers, only to present what I believe their true intent was, after hearing their statements on Expfull.com in an interview in one of their podcast episodes). When SEGA says one thing, and the contrary happens, it makes me question things. In order for something to get stronger, it has to go through some sort of resistance or purification process. That’s what we want from SEGA, to make them shine like they have before the mishaps of PSU.
I take back what I said about the petition in my previous post. It wasn’t slammed, more like shared, even before the goal was reached, so I can’t take full credit for that.
Still, an answer or explanation to my question would still be welcome by any representative willing to do so.

I don’t think Edward is reading any of this anymore, it’s like we’re blaming him for it all.
He’s just trying to be nice, help out and answer the questions we ask. When the questions are rather similair to one other and has almost become a debate there’s no point in responding. The fans will not stop complaining until they “win”.
There’s so much more I can say…
For now let them do their work and perhaps they might actually do as the fans have said one day if we are patient and behave well.

I’m fine with a dub, as long as its GOOD. Taking a look at the anime dubbing industry, only like 5 or 6 out of the total of over 100 dubbed shows have good dubs. Ignore the Dubsux subs4ever people as they hate something purely for the sake of hating something.
- In regards to content, keep it the same. I don’t want to find out you’ve removed Yukatas from the game because ‘Japanese culture’
- Allows us to pick between English and Japanese voice overs, some people like me, prefer Japanese voice overs as they more easily convey emotion, especially with English text. (Although, if the dub is of excellent quality, Of course I will pick it over the Japanese voice)
- Updates, the JP version updates roughly once a month and its usually a big update. Featuring new levels, items, gachas, maybe even a new level cap. Its fine to be a few weeks behind to take into account translation timing/testing. But no further.
- Reasonably priced gacha please. Make the prices equal to their rates. If you have a high chance of getting something nice. Price it high. If a low chance (but still a chance to get something nice) Price it low. This allows people with low incomes to give it a shot, and people with high incomes to just get what they want. It also provides you a good income. An example being say a gacha costs 6 dollars to roll. But drops its best item roughly every 2 rolls. People with money to burn can get what they want quickly. -Important- this gacha must not contain junk. Now we look at the low priced gacha, say 1 dollar per roll. Seeing as how the high priced gacha took only 2 rolls to get a good item, make this gacha have an average of the best item present in (high priced gacha) to drop in 12 rolls at the worse. This gacha may have a bit of junk but make it useful junk. (New lobby actions, voice overs, hairstyles, dyes, stuff for mag)
And Finally.
- Fix the pso2.com website, The music is laggy a bit and doesn’t sync up to the video. Probably would help to improve the quality of it as well. But that’s just me being an audiophile.
I hope you take these comments into consideration SoA. I have high hopes and I am currently playing the JP version and enjoying it greatly – even with my minimal knowledge of Japanese.

If the game were to get a 360 port (which for all intents and purposes I highly doubt is going to happen) then it would be SoJ who’d make that decision. Right not the game is only slated for PC, the Vita, and smartphones.

i believe the download for the vita may have a small charge is what i am guessing but im not sure exactly on that or what features it will come with. most likely if the vita version isnt free you will probably get promo items with it is what i am guessing.

I learned my lesson with the DC version regarding being left in the dirt so far as content goes. I played US v1 but as soon as it was announced, I imported the ASCII controller and the JP version of Ep 1&2 for the GC and was a happy camper for a long time. When PSU was announced, I preordered and totally forgot about the shameful treatment we got on the DC version here in the west. Boy, was I wrong. I’d have rather learned Japanese. I bought AotI to support the game but stopped playing soon afterwards.
I’m so excited for this game. I want it to be as good as the DC/GC versions were. I want the updates and content that the JP players get. I want it all. I admit it and I’ll gladly pay for it, too. But, please, don’t make me jump through the hoops associated with importing the game and running it from the US just to get the whole thing. I’m not sure I’d actually do it this time.
Now, I think I’ll go pull the ol’ modded Cube out of storage and fire it up. I still have a couple of 200s sitting on memory cards that could use a walk-about.

Sooo stoked! I was disappointed a lot with PSO III and Universe because I was so addicted to PSO I&II, I would have played longer if the servers would have still been up (was not into the hacked servers afterwards). This looks like a real follow-up to PSO I&II.. I’M IN!!!!

Awesome announcement! Coming West, WOOHOO! Can’t Wait! ^_^
Me been playing PS for, well, a damn long time…all the way up to PSU on Xbox. i paid my $10/month up to a last year since PSU was released. if this will be truly a free play MMO thats awesome, and the only thing we would have to pay for it some items.
there were lots of BS from PSO & PSU that pissed me off…a lot of repetitive crap…delayed releases… like a lot of you have already mentioned….
SEGA! DON’T REPEAT THE SAME BS LIKE THE LAST TIME. i love this series, love the game play, and interactions with other players….this is a game that deserve better than BS. that made a lot of players EJECT from the game and not come back.
I look forward to firing up my Force Newman, Human Fighter, & Cast Ranger once more.

I’m not going to get my hopes up of it lasting long like the Phantasy Star Online games before this (minus universe pre ambitions of illuminus), so I will be recording much gameplay as possible until the very end. I have big doubts that Japan will work with NA version to keep it close up to date as possible.

As long as the PS Vita version releases in NA me and a bunch of my friends will support this. Cause we dont have PSP2 on our vitas. Still wanna know why it’s removed from the psn. Please put that back up.
Also this won’t have a 360 version for 2 reasons. Microsoft won’t let live connect to PSN, the PS Vita game connects to the PC servers, which means live would have to which won’t work. PS3 or PS4 may have down the line though. Second is xbox live takes away from to much people. PSN gives everyone access

I kinda wish it was a continuation of the first PSO on the dreamcast! that would have been nice. You know I spent over four hundred hours to finish that game to find what i already knew; Red Ring Rico was DEAD! Past that, it was an amazing game that i could really get lost in. I was hoping that we would still be on Ragol, with all the old monsters and some new ones. I hope this is setup just like the GOOD old PSO and NOTHING like PSU. And yes, bring back the MAGs. I hope the classes and all are still the same, and still fully customizable. Maybe throw in the Beast race for good measure. but keep it like the good PSO, please?

Sega does need to listen to the comments about making sure to do simultaneous or at least no more than a 1 week delay in releasing Japanese content. As a player from Square Enix’s FFXI online (which I still play) the idea of keeping update releases on the same schedule for a single international release for all reasons stops a lot of issues like players going for an import title (why import if you can get the exact same thing localized?). Plus SE was smart enough to have complete crossplatform AND international server support.
PSU limited itself to a seperate 360 server version, and then a combined PC/PS2 server version and then limited itself to regional restrictions… instead it should have been 360+PC+PS2~3 all on one server system with international connections (as in a player in Japan could party with a player in Brazil etc.) where it would have increased the complete total server population over a full 24-hour period.
Considering how long it will take for this to be localised in other countries, it seems as if Sega has not learned a thing about synchronising their efforts in all regions. Pretty stupid to make the same mistake twice in a row. I’ll play it when it comes out, but I won’t be too surprised if it goes down the exact same path as PSU.

If server aren’t linked like it was in PSO dreamcast, I’ll just stick to JP version wwww
The world select system was genius. A big part of the western community moved to JP ships around ver.2 release (2002 or something). Mean we just want an international game, not some empty boring located server like most F2P (which are never really free anyway).
Well, I guess we’ll never have those kind of experiences again. Playing with Challenges with USA, FR and JP players, spamming world select and our symbol art masterpiece :/

*********Reposting this original message from Hunter, because it’s one of the very few posts on here that stays pertinent to the ritical issues of PSO2 without the extra nonsense that isn’t of concern to the fanbase as a whole, AND is gramatically error-free.
But I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that SEGA is finally turning a new page and trying to listen to it’s fans

Step up to the challenge? Mr. Katalio, I’m not sure you’ve actually read anything I’ve said.
Just because you say you are throwing down the gauntlet does not mean a gauntlet has been thrown down. That’s not how this works.
First, I can’t answer every question about this game. I’m not a developer and I’m not here to divulge everything about it — I am a community manager and that’s my role; I can talk with you about information we have made public about the game in the West. That’s it. If I did more than that, I would not be working here anymore. So you can call me out all you want, and demand answers, but that doesn’t mean I can give them to you.
Does this make sense? I am not just *choosing* to not tell you what you are asking. We have announced this game and you are demanding a list of specifics we are not ready to discuss. I cannot set the schedule on how to discuss these things — we will discuss everything we can, when we can. That’s not me avoiding the question; that is the actual answer. I am sorry if you don’t like it, but that’s where we are at. You’ll find this is true for every major game from every major publisher.
Second, I literally never said what you are saying I did about free to play. In fact, I said the opposite. Mr. Katalio, please. This is not a political election. Let’s not play that game. Here is what I have said: Free to Play games have changed dramatically even in the past year — major AAA titles are now free to play, and that is the arena one competes in with a F2P title. *In my opinion, it puts the competitive onus entirely on the publisher/developer; a player can leave at any time so to keep something good and compelling, no one can depend on a monthly subscription.*
There is a lot of feeling in the gaming community that subscription games are a license to keep users going from month to month. I don’t feel this way, and customers can and will leave a subscription game if they are not pleased — but that hardly matters what just I think — I understand the sentiment and I see the point. What I have said, multiple times, is that a free to play game means that the game itself has to be up to snuff. It means all those questions about content are such that if the content is not there, then the game has no revenue. No one is hanging on just to see what might happen in another week. They simply go elsewhere, and don’t play, and don’t pay. And the more people do that, the fewer might return even if what they want is added.
In other words, the game needs to be good, and it needs to meet expectations in a reasonable way. We all are aware of PSO2 in Japan and that’s clearly what is setting the expectations, at least in part — my opinion is this is a wonderful game, but of course, you don’t need to take my word for it.
If you want to ignore the answers I have given you, that’s fine, but I am not suddenly going to divulge all details. The game will come out when it comes out and we will do our absolute best to make it something fans are happy with and want to play. That’s our job! And that is my response now. If you want to ask about information we have already discussed, that’s one thing, and I will be happy to discuss that with you. If not, then my answers will not be changing from what I have already given.

@Edward@Sega – You say you’re a community manager so I have a question to pose for you. Do you believe that Sega America is handling the release of Phantasy Star Online 2 properly by leaving the English Website, Facebook page (which I read they wanted to take over), and pretty much everything in the dark?
The page is a shell of being complete, there has not been any official word (and I’m not talking about release dates. We all know the game will take however long it needs to take to be released properly) on what SEGA America is even doing.
In the modern age, publicity and making things known is what sells a game. Don’t you believe, as someone who works with the community, that the community deserves to have some type of information? Even if it’s a “Yes, it’s still being planned for release” from OFFICIAL sources?
Personally, I’ve been a part of the PSO experience Since the Beta of Blue Burst in NA…And I’ve always seen that SEGA America tends to drop the ball when it comes to keeping it’s community informed on what is going on.
Just curious on your opinion.
Thanks!

@Jerome makes a very valid point. At this point in time, I question the release of PSO2 in NA, with the lack of information that has been stated. I understand that making a video game is no easy task, however so is getting consumers to buy a product. I feel Sega may wish to brush up on the consumer decision making process. I personally require some knowledge of a product before purchase, something you clearly lack.
In short am I just getting my hopes up thinking it’s coming here? Will it be worth my time? These are the questions we seek answers to. It’s your call whether or not to answer, but more information may lead to higher profit in the end.

i guess i have a few questions that may or may not get answered.
1. can each race be each class? pso 1+2 had severe limits towards that
(i.e. casts could not use magic, so no cast forces) has that been changed?
2. are weapons still mostly class/stat based, or are they based on level now like other mmos?i know armor was and likely still is level based.
3. the piece above mentions character customization per body part. does that have a wide range of scale? and is appearance like in 1+2, where you chose body, features and clothing at start and made few changes at high cost later, or is it an equipment based look?
4. without divulging specifics, what would you say is the main level progression in this game? 1+2 were pretty much grinding (at least offline) with “quests” that unlocked to provide some change of pace but only monetary compensation. are there alternate means of advancing your characters level?
5. will shops offer a more solid selection of gear, will there be quest rewards, or is the best way to upgrade still left to random chance and time spent grinding?
6. from what ive read i gather the game is a hub-misson area set up like 1+2. do all players in a given area see/interact with one another, or are they instanced apart until grouped? and if they do all appear in the same areas, do monsters/objectives reset/spawn?
i haven’t played anything beyond 1+2′s offline mode, so im interested to see a new version of this. im not sure if my questions will/can be answered, but i thought i’d ask since they’re on my mind and didn’t see any of these clearly talked about.

@Paul
1. They just added the ability for sub classes in the JPN version, which allows for example Hunters to be able to cast Resta, which was mainly reserved for forces.
2. Armor has no stats now, so you can change your style of armor w/o having to worry about stats. Defense stats are now based on what shields/attachments you have equipped. Weapons still work like in previous PSO games except certain classes cant use certain types of weapons. All can use gunslash.
3. If you are concerned about the character creator, there is a free demo available for download, which also includes a benchmark test for your PC.
4. pretty much everything you do, whether it be client orders, or grinding, or quests, pretty much are what help you LVL. The main thing to note is, you are not leveling up your character anymore, you are leveling up your class, which means, your one character can play any class at any given time, just only one at a time.
5. shops offer a great variety of gear, however, since players were taking advantage of price gouging the shops, they now limit what you can sell to certain level range items. Find more info at bumped dot org.
6. if you are referring to multi-party areas, yes you will encounter up to 11 other players and be able to interact with one another. If you start a multi party quest you can have all 12 people at once. after a given time, monsters will respawn.

@Edward I agree with my fellow fans above me. We are simply waiting far too long for something we know everything, yet nothing about (some would beg to differ that the American way is ‘we want it, and we want it now,’) but for a game most of us a die hard fans of, we really expect some information. Most of us are people who have played on the JPN servers, so we know the classes, races, maps, gameplay, items, etc. But that’s not what we’re asking about anymore! We’re ready to have this game whenever you’re giving it to us, but what we’re wondering is: Is it something that we’d wish to wait that long for? I know you’re not purposefully trying to extend the suspense, you guys at SEGA are trying to make a game that will bring profit to you and enjoyment to the fans.
But for you to be able to do that, you can’t be closed to us anymore. We’re not (some of us, maybe, but not me specifically) asking you tell us everything about the game. We’re not begging you individually as a community manager to tell us, we’re asking you as a company. Please, look at a good example– AeriaGames’ Lime Odyssey. It was scheduled to come out 2011. Never did. We didn’t hear from Aeria about it for months: they even shut down the community boards for a while, if I recall correctly (someone feel free to counter me on that, I’m not 100% positive). People started to get upset and scared, but at last Aeria came through, sending devoted fans alpha codes to get into the game, and suddenly, a blast of popularity surged through. Though the beta release was supposedly scheduled this December, 2012, it has yet to come out, but there is news of its testing stages, which mean that our fun can’t be too far off!
The main point was, there was a time when we almost gave up hope, and I’m sorry to be one of the bringers of bad news, but that’s about what’s going to happen to PSO2! As pso2love said above me, we’re already getting frustrated and losing our patience about this. I’d love to see this beautiful title come out in my native language, but this feeling of insecurity won’t go away. I want to be back in the place I really felt home: on that Arks ship with a beautiful view of the starry universe surrounding me, fellow soldiers fighting beside me on foreign ground that I felt attraction to, as if I had already known it.
I’m sure I’m not the only one, right?
Whether you’re giving us an ESTIMATED release date or confirming / disproving our fears whether we’ll be behind our Eastern counterparts, your fans need information so that PSO2 //CAN// be a success. Edward, you say that you don’t choose whether to divulge us this information, but SEGA is the only one who can choose! We the consumers don’t get to choose for you. If we did, all of us would have made that decision long ago. It’s time to step into the Age of Light, just like the world of PSO2. Again, we’re not asking you tell us everything you’re doing in the inner workings, but we’re tired of being left out.
Thank you if you took the time to read all of this carefully because it seems like you don’t try to, as what happened with Katalio whom you sourced in your last post, when it was actually Hunter who typed that.

You say I don’t speak on behalf of the fans, yet I know without a shadow of a doubt, that the fans are only reiterating what I’ve already said. Tomoe got it right… We already know that the JPN is what the Western version will be compared to, and we already know what to expect as far as game culturalization goes… We just want an update from SEGA saying that “We are getting close to the official launch. We want the fans to get excited and share this reponse with their friends so they can get excited about PSO2 West as well.”… maybe even say something like “PSO2 West is scheduled for release in *enter month here*” IDK… we want SOMETHING!

The community is speaking loudly to you, a community manager, about what they want. They aren’t asking for details about gameplay, they aren’t asking about different things you can’t tell them.
They just want word SEGA America is learning from their past mistakes and plans to keep the community informed on what is going on with the NA/EU launch. News, news, news.
It isn’t hard, and it’s a true pity that claims are made that the company and it’s people learned from their past mistake, yet their actions speak far louder than such words. Still no news, still no ‘we haven’t forgotten you,’ nothing.
It’s Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst and Phantasy Star Universe all over again, with false claims of ‘learning’ from the past. Your community is speaking. Let’s see if any answers or even a response is to be found.

Now see, these people are getting it all right, but you guys just aren’t listening. No surprise there. We want updates or details or something. Ok, so you annouced the Western version. You showed it off at PAX. You gave away some swag SO WHAT. That was months ago, and now we don’t have a clue what’s going on. We need news or something. A release date or what the game is going to have content wise or anything! Not just a facebook page that has nothing on it, a crappy community manager, and a useless website for the game.
How about you guys actually do something right for once.

I agree that given the last notice (january 2013) not having any news to report is a little disappointing. is it still on track for that release? has it been delayed?
percentage completion sounds like a nice way of telling us where sega is at on this game, but since thats not likely…
@Edward@SEGA
is there any vague updates to keep us hopeful? is it on track for a jan release, or has it been delayed?
I know we aren’t likely to hear about content until it’s out, i would just like an accurate estimate.

Just slightly concerned with how the teaser site hasn’t been updated with news for quite a while as well as the facebook page. Please release some news soon? Even a progress update could keep at least me tide over for a bit more…

I’m excited and cannot wait to play this. I heard it’s also coming to tablet and portable devices.
Though I’m dissapointed that its not coming to consoles, as I had a TON of fun playing on dreamcast and xbox/360…. I see the reason why… consoles come and go, and the serves get shut down time and time again every time a new console is released. Hopefully sega keep these servers up forever. With that logic, I would gladly sacrifice my console gaming experience for PSOII. I just hope and pray that I can use an xbox 360 controller with the game! :>

Yes, you can use a xbox 360 controller… this game also supports other USB controllers… I’ve even tested with a wired PS3 controller and can confirm that it works with this game for the PC version.
@SEGA
* are keeping up with PSO2.JP so quickly, that they translated everything that Satoshi Sakai himself broadcasted on his blog overnight! THEY put out new info every week or at least every other week… and if it took longer, they at least informed us… bottom line, there was no 6 month long silence period when it came to their official announcement of the title being in the works. Once PSO2.JP website was up, there was no silence period. It was all hype! Something which is majorly lacking in SOA for a very, very long time.
I’m done ranting about the Western release date. Monies I could have spent towards this game, unfortunately, went to other titles that were not made by SEGA as of 3 months ago, because there was no major update by SOA to convince me to hold on. “No one is hanging on just to see what might happen in another week.” For someone aware of their own website, yet not quite bright, they must not have taken the time to see that PSO-WORLD.COM and another blog * you know who you are

If you truly are excited for this game as you say you are, then why not give us (the fans) an update? You represent SEGA, which means SEGA is just as lazy as they were when they made the western announcement. This really makes me feel like that you only made the announcement just to TRY to shut up the fans, who by the way, want to see you succeed, because your success = our pleasure. Why deny yourselves and the fans of what could turn out to be SOA’s savior of 2013? Do you really want to give up the hopes and dreams of vets who spent countless hours playing PSO, only for them to tell their friends “I wish I could show you the experiences we one had, but no, SOA is becoming so shady and unreasonable that I might give up on them and their IP’s for the rest of my life.”? Your call, SOA.

Yea I know that already. But doesn’t hurt to try and know something about release, because it has to be at least by Feb or March of this year since it is announced for NA/EU early 2013.
For sometimes during early announcement, wiki had Jan. 4 2013 for U.S. release but changed it to Early 2013.
@ Edward
Any information is better than no information. I’ve seen many f2p games done this, one for example is Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO). Players would get angry when no info is released. Delayed info well please players regardless of how late it is, at least before release dates, etc.
What I want to know is weather or not well the English version well be behind on contents to that of the Japanese version.

@Strikehunter – I understand the desire to know, but I don’t want anyone getting false hope up and have them telling more people that ‘sonic said x’ thinking it’s an actual official SEGA America person. False hope leads to a lot more disappointment than is already felt due to SoA’s poor communication with it’s community.
I guess you could say SoA needs someone who actively works with it’s community. Then again, I’ve been a part of the Phantasy Star fandom since Blue Burst’s Beta, and even then SoA just kinda…Shrugged and released it to appease fans, and gave it little support.
It’s why it tanked. And why PSU tanked. And why (god I hate saying this) I believe PSO2 will probably tank in NA/EU. Because SEGA America constantly claims to ‘learn’ and ‘change’ but their actions speak way louder than their words.

*sigh* 6 months has past… it’s 2013 and still Sega has not released any ounce of new information about this game. Hello, but thousands upon thousand of fans both old and new are waiting for an update.
While I love Sega’s IPs more than any other company out there I truly have gotten used to how terrible they relay information to their fans. Seriously after so many years of fans complaining about the same terrible business practice that frustrates us and makes us NOT want to buy your games or just give up on a franchise all together. You would think the suits who are making the same dumb mistake over and over would finally HEAR the fan’s cry and try a different approach in regards to reaching out to supporters or should I say CUSTOMERS.
Please can we get some kind of an update???????????? Early 2013 almost here! We are practically in it’s back yard. Seriously if the content is not up to date with the Japanese game when you guys finally drop this you do know there is going to be A LOT OF PISSED OFF SUBSCRIBERS.
Please do not drop the ball Sega. The fans would rather you push the game back and just put out some info letting us know what’s going on rather than release it with half the content.

Thank you for reiterating some of my previous posts. I grow tired of trying to hype this game to everyone I meet by myself, only to tell them that SOA is doing a poor job of advertising and giving us updates about this game.
If only SOA, besides EDWARD@SEGA, were reading this post, I would tell them this:
1. Give us *future potential players & fans* periodic updates… STOP BEING SILENT!
2. ADVERTISE! A video of the opening trailer and a website is great and all, but if that’s the extent of your reach to the general audience, then I am truly disgusted at what the future might bring to this game in the west. How about a commercial on TV networks? You did it before, and you can do it again! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw6hosekixk
3. I would say at least half of the fans were disappointed at first to find out this would be a PC only game. Then later, Satoshi Sakai dropped the bomb at TGS 2012 with the PS Vita version as well as the iOS/Android versions. We don’t want to be left out… we want these versions in the west as well!
@Rodney
some of them switch out from the AC stores from time to time, however there are other ways of getting them.
BTW, They already include music discs for the jukebox in the MY ROOM… You will find out in the JP version that some of the music from the original PSO is already there in PSO2… Including the one you posted.

Also “In the world of Phantasy Star Online, lasts for eternity.” LOL really? then my DC PSOv1 should still be able to get online, no? Oh, you meant offline? heh, you sure got me *rolls eyes*
Yes, SEGA has come a long way since then, however, please do this game right, by not lying in your advertisements anymore.

@pso2love
hey thanks for posting that old commercial. Damn that brings back such good memories.
I couldn’t wait to get PSO when I first saw that commercial.
I completely agree with you in regards to Sega’s silence and this has always been their problem and pathetic practice for all the major titles that fans truly want to play. It’s amazes me that no one at Sega is smart enough to realize that if you simply released a video of the game in motion, perhaps showing a new area that’s already been seen in Japan, but would be new to USA players it would be more than enough to ease the waiting pain. Seriously how hard would it be to throw together a bogus content video just to get people’s minds off the bad and focused on the good (content) that’s to come?
Anyway, when I start thinking about how Sega treats it’s hardcore fans it really does gives me a headache and makes me question why have I stayed a fan since 1986 when the Sega Master System was released.
Iin regards to the jukebox music, I think that’s cool that they have already added the tracks. But, I was hoping for an option that allowed you to play the track in the ship lobby like the old days. When I played PSU I never really spent any time in my room other than putting things up for sale in my store or swapping / putting away weapons and armor.

There is a solution to the release in America you could give the Japanese and the Americans the same game only give the option of being able to play it in English or Japanese and add a secondary server in the us that is communicating with the Japanese server and vice versa. There is also something called Time Dilation that could make high player areas more effective by transferring server power from a low player area to the high temporarily to support a larger gathering of players in a single place without having to increase the servers capacity. Creating a single game with both languages built in would ensure a simultaneous update for both Japanese and English players.

It was only natural to get excited about PSO2 for the fact it was a sequel to not only one of my favorite games, but a favorite memory. Though I’m a little disappointed in the lack of information I understand the situation. I too have to hold back information sometimes (I’m in the military) for not everything should be said. I believe SEGA is working hard on giving us a great game. A game that has the solid foundation and content of a P2P, but the flexibility and freedom of subscription and “ball n chain” of a F2P. Needless to say I’m excited, keep up the good work SEGA and good job.

Posted by strikerhunter on January 21st, 2013 at 8:41 pm
Comment # 261
@Asuna & @strikerhunter – Chances are there won’t be a BETA for the NA/EU release. At least, I don’t see why there would be since the entire game is already released in Japan at the moment – meaning that they already know 90% of the bugs and stuff.
Unless SEGA of America is doing more than translations, I think a Beta would just be a waste of time and further drive away all those waiting. It’s already lost a lot of it’s hype and I know a lot of people who are going off to other Free to Play or even Pay to Play games saying that they don’t want anything to do with waiting on something that probably will die off like PSU.
Personally, I check back now and again, otherwise I’m looking more forward to Tera Online going free to play in Feb. and Blade and Soul releasing whenever it does. For my PSO2 needs, I’ll stick to the Japanese servers.

True that we may never see beta because most of it has already been tested.
SoA better release it soon or they well have some competition to compete with because several F2P games are due to be released this spring. They are already in competition with current successful F2P games as well, for me noticeably Lord Of The Rings Online.
Point Being: PSO2 sales will fall from lost of hype when new games coming out and older games continuing to expand.

I wish more JP/KR companies would just open-world release their games, and just allow the fans to localize the game client/content instead of trying to do it all themselves. Those games that people are really excited about, will translate the content in order to enable their friends to play.
Mainly the only reason not to play the JP version already is the lack of being able to buy the cash shop items using their own credit cards.

@ Sakei – I don’t favor (I do play on it, and don’t dislike it but…) using the Japanese version because I can’t understand the story at all. All the ‘story elements’ are in Japanese still and that makes it hard for me to get into a game.
I know most aren’t bothered by it, and just play PSO2 for the gameplay and the grind (Just a guess on that one) but personally I like to feel a need to ‘go further’ and ‘see what happens next’ in a story. For me, the Japanese version lacks that right now.
That, and a lot of my friends refuse to go through the hassle of patching, losing the story, etc etc to play…And any game is more fun with friends!

You can easily find the “Phantasy Star Online 2 Character Creator” either by going straight to pso2.jp or just Googling it. There is also an unofficial working “English patch” out there just by googling it as well. It only took SOJ less than 4 months to record voice actors for the 3 volume script, and for Hideaki Kobayashi to record the theme music with the Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague, Russia. These are all fun facts here, however seriously, we need to know EXACTLY what is the hold up! If you can do that, before the end of this month, you MIGHT be able to hold on to the fan base, and get more people interested again… and yes we do come back every week just to see if there is anything new. I would love to stop spending my money on other games, and throw money at SEGA just for this game… however, the silence has to stop, and now you know that I do speak for a lot of the fan base.

Agree. Something must have caused a hold up on info, I mean how long does it even takes to translate stuffs? And what’s up with the long silence?
OMG it would be cool if it were for PS Vita in the U.S. when western version comes out on PC.

I have a question…
After PSO 2 will come to Europe and North America, since i have the Japanese client installed, will i be able to change the languages from the client without having to install a new one? I mean a English or European version of it.
Anyway ill patiently wait for the western update.

Sakai has previously stated that NA/EU will have unified servers, separate from JPN. They want to do an option where you can transfer your character from one ship to another… It is still unknown if that will allow players outside of Japan to transfer their JPN characters to NA/EU servers.

@ Edward@Sega Thank you for the update, even so do you think there is any hope of an official copy of the character creator being released in English in the near future? At least it would give people something to start trying out, and like the JP one it would also let people sort out whether their current PC’s will be able to run the game.

I know you said you don’t have any additional news to post. Would you be able to ask permission for some unofficial information from some of the people who decide those things and tell us what they say? Even something like “everything is progressing as we expected” or “keep an eye out for more news soon” would be awesome now. The last full post regarding PSO2 I see is from August 22 in regards to PAX. I don’t think the community is wanting on a whole lot of information but anything, official or not, would make the wait a bit more bearable.I’m not looking for confirmation of any specific points but any small announcement would help. Could we even get a vague status update?
If I am looking in the wrong place for news please inform me so I can try focus on the better source. I do not wish to seem rude. I’m just a fan wanting to know what or where I can learn more about the upcoming game. I realize there is a lot of information that is confidential. Are there any specific reasons why they haven’t allowed the release of anything more recent? Are there problems with development? Do the people in charge just not want to say anything either way in case there is a delay? I can handle a delay if it was at least mentioned.

Tell SEGA to stop lying to the fans. January came and went, and yet we still have no update. If you are going to take longer, at least post an update that says so, and be specific, because there will need to be a legitimate reason for taking so long. Lying to your fans is only making the hype drown deep. You and I both know that you are able to ask SEGA to allow you to post an update. Do it, and do it quickly!

I don’t think that’s how it works. Edward is only here to give out information he is allowed to announce. It’s not him who chooses what information can be given but it’s SEGA who does. And even if he did ask SEGA i don’t think that there would be many chances of them approving. Plus Edward only mentioned early 2013 not January so it could come anytime at 1/4 of the year. So stop blaming Edward for not giving enough information and ask them yourself if you can. Just saying. And by the way, i can’t wait for this damn update too but all we can do for now is wait for SEGA. Or you could play something different, i mean there are a lot of games that might hold your interest better than this.

There’s literally no news on this game and the CBT hasn’t even started for it. It’s not coming out “early 2013″. And even if it did it would be dead before even entering the market because Sega doesn’t actually care enough about the game to advertise it and build up the playerbase it needs to even be remotely profitable.
Much as I love Phantasy Star, once they screw this up I’m done with Sega as a whole. If they don’t want to take the time to support their games and their fans then I sure as hell don’t want to spend the time and money supporting their products. Sorry Platinum Games, but even you’re not worth this.

@Bluedragon – re-read what Asuna is saying. She isn’t blaming him, she’s blaming SEGA for lying to their fans. And honestly? They are. And Edward was one of those stating that they (which includes himself) have learned from past mistakes on PSU/PSO:BB etc. Which is (at least in my mind) a lie since keeping the fans in the dark was a mistake that was done in PSO:BB, was done again in PSU, and their actions show is going to be done AGAIN in PSO2.
Edward has the ability, as a community rep, to let the higher-ups know that they are screwing the fans over, and losing business to other companies. That’s all she’s asking him to do, to talk to them, to try and manage his community as he has stated is his job in an earlier post.

OK Sega, serious problem, there is no information at all concerning pso2, the last we heard was on the 24th of august, its a shame, as a big company, you think it would be the first concern of getting some information out there, your being more secure than the FBI servers,if you want people to pay money, you have to get some hype for the game, everyone seems to be losing interest because of the information. With the Japanese version, the information was released daily and there seems to be nothing from your side. With Wayne’s world, they said ”if you make it, they will come.” They still did roots of advertising. Come on, get a grip and start giving the hardcore fans what they want. if Sega of mexico did a version, it would be out sooner.
Signed by me
P.S I need the information, me and a group of people will be live streaming the start of the NA/EU servers.

Why in the feck does so many people think it’s just NOT going to come out? I’m pretty sure SEGA knows how bad that would be for them with so many people expecting it.
I have a hunch that this game is going to be dumped on us all of a sudden without much warning. They’re going to finish translating the PC -and- Vita versions and release them simultaneously so everyone on both platforms can all start at the same time.
This is wishful thinking, but I pray it be truth.

Exactly!… I would like to point out that PSO2 in Japan is the best thing going for SEGA right now, according to SEGA SAMMY FY Ending March 2013 3rd Quarter Results. Just Google it and you’ll see what I mean.
@Bluedragon
I decided to give in, and play something different while I wait. I went and pre-ordered Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed on Steam, and I must say, waaaaay better than Mario Kart! I highly recommend it. At least the SUMO devs responded in less than 24 hours when bugs were found upon release, and it’s like they are replying with updates every other day… that’s more than I can say about SEGA right now.

This is what I wanted to point out:
“Phantasy Star Online 2 – Over 1.7 million registered users”
Think about it, at that point, theres no telling what possible income that might be… See, if people wanted to, they could buy Arks Cash every month to get the premium services, which would make it seem like a sub fee, but it’s not, because it’s not required since it is a free to play game(unless you like to have the services all the time). This is money SEGA US/EU is missing out on right now. Once again, we want SEGA to succeed, because their success is our pleasure… but that won’t happen if you continue to be silent about this game, SOA.

I still actually play episode 1 and 2 quite often actually. Hopefully they do release the game soon. most of us has been waiting patiently for this games release. everything about it is unlike any MMO i’ve seen, except SAO which would not be released for years to come xD
But really though, this MMO is worth the wait in my opinion and hope they could speed up the process just alittle. I heard the US version will be just like the JP version, if this is true, then it should take very little time to turn the language on all items/etc in the system to english based. If it’s a like, and it won’t be the same, I suppose I could understand why it is taking longer than expected.

January had already passed and now we are halfway through February and still no info that we are coming close to release date……………………………..Come on SoA!!!! some info on release date well be nice after a nearly 7months of silence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Back at PAX the game already seem rightfully done from translation to content. There is no need for betas since it is just a simple translation between the game.
How long does it even takes to translate a game?
The only thing I can think of why there is no info because:
1. No new info to be given because it’s going to be up-to-date with the JP version.
2. SOA decides not to give info
3. Delaying because of the lack of actors to do voices of characters in story-mode.
4. Sega is having a hard time translating new contents and older contents and trying to keep up with the up-coming contents in the months to follow.
5. There is no NA/EU PSO2 and that it was just a hoax.
Just my nickle.
Better hope for late Feb or March release date.

Although thoroughly looking forward to this game I find myself becoming very worried about the slowly unfolding reality. I have been hearing about the release of this game for the past two years and although I missed out on Beta trials for the Japanese version (due to continental difference) I have been patiently waiting for news of the games release in the UK and America.
Back in August 2012 I heard about the plans for a release date in November and imidiately began saving up to purchase the game. November rolled through and I waited to heard any announcement, nothing. On December the 2nd I discovered that the release date had been moved to 2013. At first I was horrified to find that I would have to wait a year for the likely release in September ‘common time for game releases’, but to my relief I found that the plan was to make it an earliy release for January.
In late December I was in full excitement to play the game I had waited so long for, but once more news told of a problem with the game that would need to be held back til Febuary 2013 and now here we are. Febuary is in full swing but still no news.
I am hoping that the release is still imminent but without any more information I am slowly losing hope for the release of this famed title. Please Sega, any information at all is better than this. I’m not sure how long I can keep up this optimism.
Thank you,

Just an update on the progress of PSO2 West is all we are asking for at the moment… if it’s going to be delayed, yet again!?… then tell us, SEGA OF AMERICA, and quit leaving the fans in the dark!
It really is a simple, yet profound request.
On A side note… I’m glad Microsoft decided not to buy out SEGA, because SEGA really needs to get back to what they did best, before they jumped guns… make great games, and give the fans what they want. That way, tehy would get back in the ranks up with Sony & Nintendo again… and at that point, we may even see a Dreamcast 2 in the future.
The new SEGA laptops are cool… but A Dreamcast 2 would be much better. :3

1. If that is the case, SEGA should tell us right away! Stop leaving us fans in the dark!
2. SEGA did come out and posted a link to pso-world.com on pso2.com teaser page… They better not be witholding new info, otherwise, it would be a slap in the face to us fans.

is just saying “Hey look, sorry fans their is no PSO2 to wait”. Literally every MMO that I played gives monthly infos from updates to releases to expansion and yet Sega had yet to give one bit of info out when there are plenty of info to be given, from contents to release date.
Heck Sega, if you don’t give info on release date then why not just hype the fans about contents! Contents well help keep your fans’ hopes alive until release date. Saying that the US/EU version is up-to-date with the JP version or whatever update is coming up or whatever update that you guys are doing which is causing the delaying of info or release.

SEGA has screwed up the whole thing and has not the courage to admit it.

How dare you SEGA lie to us! Again! (for that matter)
You send Edward to tell us “In the meantime I hope I can show you enough of what’s going on to keep you all interested in the game, and when it launches I hope you’re all still excited for it.” , when he does not stick to his word. Do you really want to be like this, SEGA? All you’ve done was show off a short demo at PAX last year, translated a few things that would have taken unofficial translators less than a week or two, and you expect us to hold on because you’re doing soo much behind the scenes (yet, you’re not giving us a clue as to waht you are doing) and expect us to be compliant and wait, while you continue to be silent, again! It is not rude to ask someone why are they being silent after making such a big announcement. So why do you continue this way?
I know this isn’t Edward’s fault… this is SEGA of America/SEGA of Europe’s fault for not following through on their promises. SEGA, you have the chance to make awesome money on this title here in the west, and you just stay silent….
This is something investors do not take lightly. We want you to post an update, either stating that you are still bringing it here in the west, or that you aren’t going to release it at all. As one person already commented on this blog post said “Stop lying to your fans”. Also, we want a public apology for your silence, and legitimate reasons for doing so. Is SEGA planning to expand this game with the Vita version simultaneously with the PC version? Have you been recording English Voice actors? Has the “Game Culturalization” consumed most of the work? We NEED to know this stuff, that is, if you are still going through with the western release. One more thing, give us a more estimated release date window. We don’t have to know the day, the month would be suffice… stating “2013″ isn’t going to cut it anymore. We want answers…. Now!

Well, that maybe true but I wouldn’t be a “Prick” about it. There will always be a more awesome game out there like TERA, or Blade & Soul. Rather play those instead of PSO2 to be honest. If SEGA wants to lose money or lose consumers/customers and not gain any more money, that’s their lost not ours. Eventually they will get shut down in the long run … just like every other MMO out there, so I wouldn’t much worry about it. Haha, also my last comment before “Kirito” about the novels, I added my last name from FB “Kazuto” because there is apparently another “Kirito” here and wouldn’t want others to think that is me. I mentioned it before however after 2-3 days still says “awaiting moderation” which I think is stupid.

anyone else have similar feelings about this?
i feel it’s the best course of action not only because E3 is big, but because it would really display PSO2 off to the public on a greater scale instead of just announcing it at some random date in the year with no significance to it.

@Strikehunter, English text translation was probably the first part they finished, there’s plenty more work that need to be done to the game for it to function well in the West. Dubbing being a big portion since from what i understand there’s plenty of story and talking in PSO2 and having speech translated into English is pretty much a must in NA market for games these days.

Yes, this is what Sakai called “Game Culturalization”. I mentioned this in my earlier posts under this blog post, just scroll up and see for yourself. This is nothing new. We already knew that they are working on this. We just don’t know what else is taking them so long.
Configuring the skin color spectrum for different colored players is understandable… However, to “Americanize” PSO2 by adding Jeans/tshirts as special costumes, would be something they should add after the fact… not before release (or not really have at all… Vindictus has done this before, and it just doesn’t look right IMHO)… then again, SEGA will do what they feel is right… unless one of the Devs starts to listen to the concerns of the fans… Oh Wait…

Phantasy Star Online 2 – the next chapter in the SEGA American failure saga.
Tera has gone F2P. I’ve pretty well stopped playing PSO2 altogether. =/ As awesome as the JP version is, I can’t understand they story due to the fan translators being unable to do anything about it being server-side or whatever. (Many things to them for what they CAN and DO translate for us however!)
The American version will come out watered down just like the last two installments, SEGA will flop on content update and doing any real moderation, and it’ll be shut down like the rest. Honestly if it isn’t Sonic, SEGA America should keep the heck away from it.

I find it interesting, it looks like if it’s true we’d get most of the game’s new content fairly quickly. There was also a bit in there that struck me, making me really wonder if it’s real:
“Netcafe shop items will be distributed through AC, FUN, EX Cube, Photon and Badge shops, as the NC system has been removed from the English release.”
Considering Netcafes aren’t really prominent here…;)

They have lied to use for long enough and, like the racist company they are, they have maliciously kept away the real monetary contributors to their dying company. If they had any business sense, they would release it asap to the west and europe. Japanese gamers change games like the wind and they will be left with a barren ghost town of a server, whereas more western gamers show increased loyalty and love of a server over time. The fact that they have just not allowed the english language function to work is proof of their national favoritism and biasts or at their pettiest state, Sega just wants to give their own japanese players a head start so they can passive agressively put the rest of the world behind them to feed the Asiatic ego.

Okay, everyone, calm down, This game WILL be released in the U.S., that much has been confirmed. The reason? because there are so many English people playing the Japanese version for over a year now, and they translated all the info you’d need to play it in English. So quit being nay-Sayers thinking you know everything, when you haven’t even seen it all. I have a level 15 (can’t remember, been forever) character in the Japanese version, playing with an English patch that’s free to obtain, and there are plenty of sites showing you how to get it working for English speakers.and @strikerhunter, the game has a cash shop like all other free MMO’s, and they need a beta so they can set up the ENGLISH servers to work well for you, since they can’t use the original Japanese version.

They gave out AC during closed beta in the JP version to help test out purchasing the features, and you weren’t able to purchase AC because they haven’t implemented the payment system yet.

It’s an amazing game. You people act as if PSO2 is the only MMO out there, I can name over 20 MMOs better than PSO2. It’s not the end of the world so stop arguing and stop bitching on the blog. Yes I’m playing the JP version as we speak which is why I given out my point.
I know it isn’t true for many reasons.
Here are some:
1. It’s by some dope who just went and created a site to give hope to others.
2. It didn’t even sourced where the info came from, all it said was this and that.
3. Why would they have setbacks on updates on different versions of an MMO?
I know Sega has a reputation with that in PSU and PSO but this is not on a console. Any MMO that has different language variants and one version having all the updates while others don’t will fail. It’s like saying only US WoW gets all the updates and EU WoW doesn’t, it’ll lead to a big failure.
In the mean time as I wait for western release I’ll be playing the JP version.

I think it is a little too late for a kickstarter. If SEGA would have just said something like this sometime in November of last year: “Sorry for taking so long with the translation and (game culturalization). We just don’t have enough hands to speed up the process. Maybe you guys might be interested in supporting a kickstarter project? We could give out extra stuff like extra AC and special weapons for those who support.
“, then that would have worked, and I would have gladly pitched in.
(This is a WHAT IF… not supporting the pastebin info) Especially IF the pastebin info was true, that would mean we should hear something by the end of this month, in which PAX East would make sense for SEGA to say something… like the announcement of signing up for beta. In this case, there would definitely be no need for a kickstarter, because that would mean SEGA has PSO2 West already ready!? (like I said, only IF the pastebin info was true)

I’ve been playing Phantasy Star games ever since the Dreamcast. I’ve been patient I really have! But this waiting in the darkness needs to end please. I grow tired of even having conversations about PSO2 knowing that when my friends ask me “when will it release? whats the last we’ve heard about it?” I have to break the news to them and it breaks my heart. Phantasy Star has been an exceptionally joyous franchise for me I’ve logged a ridiculous amount of hours onto each and every game for the entire purpose of playing it with my friends which we’ve forged very memorable experiences from. Please I really want to have that back. While I have been playing on the JP servers my friends are either incapable or unwilling to make that jump so please just give us some info! I can be optimistic and wait but I think I speak for everyone when I say our interesting in Phantasy Star is dying by the day.

@pso2love, Also they would never use kickstarter, It’s kinda stupid to think they would ever. Come on It’s SEGA! they have enough money to fund projects.
Kickstarter is something more used for smaller time things, like indie game, indie movies/series, Art (books, comics, webcomics), concept products or raising funds to complete products (like Ouya did) etc…
Not really something big branded companies would need to use i would think, would kinda look bad if they did,
I’m sure SEGA has the money for PSO2 it’s just the matter of getting everything done which is quite a lot of work, and depending on the size of the team working on it and there experience with f2p MMORPG’s it could take longer since they will have to go over and learn it themselves during the process of localization.
I would hate if they released a rushed product filled with problems.

Everything else said “2013″. However, you wouldn’t notice this until someone shows this to you, but they did have a dev at PAX 2012 say on camera “Sometime in 2013″.
Point is, SEGA did say “Early 2013″ first, because PSO-WORLD.COM was the first to get the news before they posted on their sega.com website and their blog. Still, 6 1/2 months of silence is not a good sign.

It’s sad that fans have to go as far as making a petition to SEGA to get ANY new news about PSO2 West, simply because SEGA is soo quiet. However, it also shows that the fans are passionate & showing major interest, despite this silence.
SEGA, have the decency to say something. You’re not helping this release by staying silent. The fans would love to help, but you got to give them an update. Here is a little bit of 101… It’s no wonder other f2p mmorpg’s are fairing very well, and thats because they are giving teasers and updates constantly… without them, the hype becomes stagnant. Even before PSO2 became a reality in Japan, there was a steady stream of updates and teasers… The fact that random people stepped up to translate japanese, shows how much the fans want to play this game in English, especially since that version of the game had to be hacked in order to make that a reality.
Hire hackers! Not only are they good at finding loopholes/exploits/etc., they will also help protect your assets by sharing data that they have discovered with you, thus giving you better or best protection against future attempts to hack the game.
Still, with all this re-work, it’s becoming clear that if this “game culturalization” becomes unattractive, people will rather stick to the JP version because of their great content that isn’t left out. You could suprise us all, by announcing release at PAX this week, along with the questions that are in the petition. Regardless, this should be an interesting week, indeed. ;3

Wiki now has it saying quarter 2-2013.
Well, just go play with the English community that had already began playing PSO2 on ship 2 as they wait for US/EU release. I’m already playing it for nearly 2 months as I wait.
If the whole culturalization means different content between each, then I don’t see why not go play both versions.
If PSO2 US/EU does release in Q-2 2013 then SoA has my money, if not then by by I’m gonna enjoy SoJP’s success.

SEGA can go suck a log. They are going to crash and burn before they could even get off the ground. People are tired of the corporate BS, and the waiting. It doesn’t cost a red cent to simply put up a few YouTube teasers and an alpha, beta, and release date. Hate to break it to you guys it will never come out. If it did, it would be too late as FFO online, Tera, and that new nude boob flopping game Scarlet Blade take the market. Keep up the remarkable work at failing to maintain PR with your faithful fan base. As for me, I’ve played the JP version and moved on. Most of the JP players already know that the West will get shafted. Time to go play the deboobed Tomb Raider Reboot. Don’t lose sleep over it. It won’t happen, sorry US of A

You’re not at PAX East this year? WOW! This must’ve been deliberate, seeing as you guys were there in the past. This is not a good sign.
I was hoping to play PSO2 West before the tribulation… however, it looks like that might not happen after all, unless you guys say something by the end of this month. If this month ends, and we hear no news from you about this release, then you better announce your cancellation.

To back it up, it was from Siliconera.
Wow, it took them over half a year to announce that they were going to delay it? Why am I not surprise? Oh yea because as I suspect it, it’s already past Early 2013.
Only thoughts: the contents better be worth the wait of over half-a-year to wait for.

I used to love Sega back when Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was my FAVORITE game, now Sega disappointing me at every turn, all the JPN exclusives, late western releases, it’s all pointless garbage that needs to stop, but they wont, at least not as long as they still make sales…It’s a little ironic, we say the way they treat us is bad, but we still buy it, and they still make Profit, there’s NO benefit to the gamer, it’s a shame really. Sega does not care for their WESTERN gamers, they even delayed the game, for no reason, there is already an English patch for the latest version of JPN PSO2, how hard is it for Seg-arbage to do the same? It’s not. They just won’t because they don’t care.

The article states “SEGA can officially confirm PSO2 has been delayed”, yet they can’t even name the spokesperson. You would figure if SEGA would officially confirm something, they would do it using their own resources and not just leaving it to a third party.
IF the article is true and correct, please make an official announcement by making a new post on this blog, so we would have an official, tangible source to go by. If it is not true, please debunk this with a reply of some sort. Many fans would appreciate your reply concerning this.

So bringing over a “non-complete” version of the game will make it being delayed even further? In a MMO? Isn´t that like shooting yourself in the foot?
I mean a MMO will never be “complete” as to it being released in one sitting without no further updates. Isn´t it better to release the first let´s call them “chapters” and then keep working on getting updates out so that the fans that would love to start playing on the eng servers can do this?
The only thing I can think of now delaying it is the character creator as it might be a bit to much for the market outside Japan with all the customization you can do to your character at the very start…
Cause otherwise what reasons can it be? the Jap version is getting more and more content and all we are left with is a “this game is delayed, no further info” notice in a comment on the Sega Blog? Wouldn´t it be better to make a post with the information and post it all over the net? And on your FB page which hasn´t been updated in like 6months.
But yes I will keep waiting. I´ll wait untill my birthday and after that I´m looking at the Jap version.

My only question is: Will the game be up-to-date with the JP version or have contents that are entirely different than to the JP version, if not either then I see no point into waiting for US/EU release and just stay on the JP severs.

Edward really? Most of us who would be playing are on the Japanese game already, which we have taken to time to translate for others. We even have made ways to by AC and have been doing so for months. We don’t want a half assed release. If you really cant say anything at this point, a year later, there is something fundamentally wrong here. And yes I pay for PSO 2 AC myself. Sega has already created this situation, where there are 2 options. The players will stay on the Japanese servers who have made there progress and dont wish to leave there progress and will not support the USA version anyway. Or 2 you end up blocking international IP an we abandon PSO all together. This statement not only comes from me but my team and our group of teams. Every generation of PSO has had this happen and I have to say, we are to old for this. As consumers, as your target audience, as your fans, we deserve better, and you should take in to account these things as a company.

@Michael: I understand where you’re coming from, both in your support of a game you like and obviously care a great deal about, and in your frustration over previous and current issues. That’s part of the complexity of being a huge multiplayer game to a different territory. I am not saying anything about the game or the status though so I don’t know where you’re talking about a “half assed release”. The goal is to bring the best game we can to people here. It will take as long as it takes, and I really am sorry it has been delayed at this point.
@PsowKion: Thanks for your support! What the community is doing — supporting a franchise they love through thick & thin — is more than enough, and the rest is on us to bring the game to you.
@strikerhunter: It’s true, all I can post is what I am able to post. Is this something you are trying to call out as something that isn’t self-evident? I can’t deliver news I don’t have. I am here as a community manager which means promoting the news that is public and that we are able to discuss. (smiley face) It isn’t my job to decide what goes out, or to “hide” anything. I talk about what I can, and if you want to meet the discussion on those terms, okay. But saying I’m doing what I say I can do doesn’t get us anywhere, now does it.

Regardless most of the PSO fans, including me, are wondering why are there no info, what’s the reason to the delay, and are we up-to-date on content.
When Michael said “Half ass released” what Michael meant was that we don’t want another Phantasy Star game that is behind on content where as the JP version is a year or 2 ahead, remember PSU?
Honestly, if there are problems that needs to be tested, bugs to be found, etc. make a beta version and let your fans help you ease up your work.

At this case, it’s very reasonable. Why give out the first expansion of a new game a few months after it’s released? Why not just make it up-to-date upon release so that it doesn’t get fall behind. If they do release western version now, then the update be delayed because of it. Otherwise, they delay the regular date just to allow the updated version. They can also use this time to find more bugs and fix on other areas as well.
Just my two cents.
Also, then you tell me any other logical reasons why they (Sega) delayed the game.
If it was ready as you said, then why hadn’t we seen it released yet then huh?

I really doubt that the reason is because of JP’s EP 2.
If anything it’s just the work load and possibly some of the already released patches/content updates.
Episode 2 is probably not even on the plate yet for SoA,
Also i feel that so called “Delay” was just to clear up all that talk about an “early 2013″ release which seemed false according to dates written on SEGA and and even talked about during the demo at PAX.
The quoted text he provided in that delay article didn’t mention anything about a Delay at all, Was just you normal reply to people wanting info which can’t be provided (yet), I’ve heard Edward say pretty much the same thing a few times now in reply to some peoples posts on here,

like displayed in this pic: http://i48.tinypic.com/2unww11.png
@Taylor, just pass off the so called “delay” as a release period correction. I really don’t think there was any delay to begin with.
Sega of Japan can be part of the reason why but there’s also the fact that PSO2 is a pretty big game with lots of work needed to be done in order to localize it, not only for NA but for EU as well, This is SEGA’s first F2P PC MMORPG as well.
I would give it a year at least so i’ll be waiting until July before i start getting impatient if nothing has been said by then.

Another thing, spiral knights is Sega’s first f2p mmorpg, not pso2.
@Edward
After reading all the comments posted in the petition I started a few months ago,I noticed one very common message… That SEGA of America is not doing a very good job of communicating with it’s fanbase when it comes to content.I do not know what your plans are, however, gamers tend to get excited when they see lots of advertisement, and are getting updates of content info… Even if it s stuff we already know from the jp version, the fact that SEGA would tease the fans every week with content kept their interest. Tomoi has a point, if you want us (the fans) to help spread the word, you need to give us something to work with.

They did technically clarify that the date was 2013 at PAX Prime when one of the devs said “sometime in 2013″.
Yes i understand Spiral Knights is a f2p MMORPG but it wasn’t developed by SEGA, SEGA is just the publisher and Three Rings was the developer.

It wasn’t inaccurate. The delay mentioned at Polygon clearly stated that they was intending for a Early 2013 release. It’s obvious that SEGA US/EU has no idea when they are going to get a release date nor anything what so ever about it. Hinting that JP has full control over our version of the game.
I have to agree that it gets rather confusing as the Dev at PAX did say “Sometime in 2013″…

2013 has many more mentions than Early 2013, the fact 2013 is mentioned officially on SEGA.com a few times i’d be more likely to believe that over the single and only mention of “early 2013″on PSO-World.

@Anonymous
The reason why the “delay” was legit, IS because SEGA acknowledges PSO-WORLD as the largest Phantasy Star community… so it was an honor for them to get the news first, directly from SEGA themselves (add to the fact, once again, that the admin at pso-world confirmed that they got the “early 2013″ from SEGA themselves. It was not a typo, nor an add-on.) They even have their logo posted on the front of SEGA’s official pso2.com website. Edward@SEGA confirmed the article, enough said.
@SEGA
You want fans to help you out by “supporting a franchise they love through thick & thin”.
We get that… we have for a very long time… The truth is we, the fans, don’t have much to go on. The hardcore fans already know whats going on with the Japanese version, yet newcomers only have a Pax demo that was last year. Start communicating more with your fans by releasing tidbits of info from time to time… every 6 months is way too long to wait for news. Need I remind you that SoJ released info at least every week to two weeks for like a year and a half before its release. You say you are listening, show us some proof.

@pso2love, So just because they got the news a few hours before hand and because their site was put on the teaser site as a fan site/forum that makes it more official then something SEGA puts on their own site, blog, youtube page?
don’t forget even this Blog post says the date is 2013,
I understand Edward confirmed the article but it is unaware what Edwards involvement with PSO2 really is so can his words be taken seriously or maybe what he said was just used to further the clean up process of the mistaken date through the article (i dunno).

just reading the PSO-World Press release now is funny because the actual date announcement is labelled with the Location, Date and SEGA branding and in that paragraph “early 2013″ wasn’t mentioned, it was only ever mentioned in the short 1 sentence above that which differs from the same press release posted on SEGA.com which left out the “early” part.

pso2love pointed out the obvious already, which is… “Early 2013″ was their original goal, SEGA knew they couldn’t meet it, so they announced the “delay” which was OFFICIALLY confirmed by Edward@SEGA. What is it that you don’t get? Calm down, and wait, like everyone else.

It is true that SOA/SOE is lacking in the communication department. It would be nice of them to start giving us tidbits like pso2love mentioned earlier. It just sucks that SEGA would rather spend time on making more Sonic games, making them Nintendo exclusives BTW, than giving us status updates on PSO2 West. SEGA says they want to grab newcomers and please the hardcore fans, but it looks like they’re depending on the fans a lil too much to make a hype machine… pso2love is right… SEGA needs to give us something to work with, rather than sit there becoming stagnant. v.v
Yes, the only thing we have seen from SOA/SOE so far is a PAX demo, which is for the PC. However, SEGA could very well suprise us all by giving us the Vita and iOS/Android versions as well… Only time will tell.

I still got my hopes for E3. Though at the moment they seem very focused on Sonic. It’s what made them who they are today, so I guess that’s more important.

Even when the game comes here we probably wont get the full flavor Japan has and some stuff might even be edited out entirely unfortunately. I hope we’ll get Hatsune Miku stuff and crossovers like Japan has, but I have my doubts given Sega’s record with previous PSO (and even classic like certain monsters being edited out of the game for nudity) titles. Some Mario crossover stuff can be cool if it’s ever announced for Wii U. “Emergency Code:Avoid” where you need to avoid Mario jumping on your head would be awesome.

Considering Sega’s track record with previous PSO titles stuff might get edited out for “western sensibilities” so we likely won’t be getting the full flavor of the Japan version unfortunately. I’d love to have Hatsune Miku items in all versions, but Sega likely doesn’t love us that much. Hopefully Sega learned from the past and gives all its games equal treatment and the American version is just a translated version of the Japanese one. I don’t mean an exactly literal translation but just translate meaning don’t completely change characters because they might not be PC in the west or whatever.

I’m mostly repeating myself here, but here goes: I would give you tidbits if I could. There isn’t any information that I *can* give but am choosing not to. It doesn’t work like that. From my position, what I see every day is feedback from incredibly passionate fans. I do my best to make sure that is chronicled and passed along so it’s clear how much this game means, and that there have been people waiting on news for months.
Right now nothing has changed, and I don’t have additional news.

It’s been more than half a year since SOA has put out any substantial info on PSO2West.
I question, what criteria goes into an highly anticipated title? Does SOA/SOE even care? Are they merely just tossing a bone to those asking for this game, in hopes that would be enough?
Yes, people are suprised there are still people like me, who still have faith, that a company from so long ago, could return with a bright image of themselves, to actually give people what they actually want… a great game! I’m sorry Microsoft screwed you guys over with the Xbox prototype, also known as the Dreamcast (which I still have mine till this very day). I gotta say, The very game that makes your company money right this very moment, and you delay the chance on making more money over here in the west… while pissing off the very fanbase who are trying their hardest to hype this game till its release with what they are given, is NOT showing any sign of fruition.
I read this in a post just recently, and I leave you with this quote: “I find it fascinating. Sega of America are either fucking genius’s and they have a plan for USA PSO2 so crafty up their sleeve that they are gonna knock the skulls out of your heads leaving your brains intact, or they are so fucking dumb that it’s almost criminal that they are allowed to market online games at all. At least…that’s what I think from a third party perspective. It doesn’t seem as though it could possibly be anything in between at this point.”

It’s a shame that we still have no news on a release date, it’s been almost a year since it was announced and if I remember correctly, almost a year since it was released in JP. Seems as though we are going to be way behind JP, yet again
and global servers are out of the question yet again since I very seriously doubt that joining a global server with those who have been playing for almost a year now is going to be at all desirable, at this point I find myself hoping that servers aren’t global as I plan on starting this game from day one of release and wouldn’t care to start with a year or more’s disadvantage.

I’ve really been looking forward to this, as I was an original player of PSO on the Dreamcast. Kindly clarify: Are we getting this in the States, or not?

“Right now nothing has changed, and I don’t have additional news.”
So… PSO2West is still coming… yet, SEGA won’t give any new updates… It’s not like you’re hiding any strategies from different companies, since the JP version is already released. *sigh*
You won’t rush, yet, you won’t give a release date. “Sometime in 2013″ just doesn’t cut it anymore. It seems to me SEGA already has a release date, and they already have the game ready… the question really is… why is this game NOT one of your top priorities? Let’s face it… you are not the company you once were… but, you can be… If SOA/SOE would start taking Sakai’s advice. “Listen to your fans. They know what they want. Stop making games you “think” players want, and actually make games players really want.”

Personally I am sick and tired of waiting for this game to be released to the west. A year is a LONG time to delay a game and on top of that STILL no word on if its ever ganna be released to the west. At this point I don’t ever think it will! So im completely done waiting for this game. So screw Pso2 there are other games I can be playing and spending my money on. So peace SEGA probably wont ever see you again. PS. If anyone else starts Tera lets hit each other up because that’s the game im ganna be playing from now on. IGN: Lockzo

I’m a bit tired of waiting. Yet I’m not going to yell and shout. I think much of that has been done. I’m glad to see there is someone that has been responding to us.
I do hope that the big project is still going. I also agree with the previous comment. If you guys got something, go with your gut. Just do it.
I also think it’s time for another announcement, even if it’s of another delay. Even if that might bring an inevitable backlash of “OMG WE GAVE YOU THIS MUCH TIME”, I think it shows that you guys are still working on it, and gives us more hope.
And one last thing, I see you are the only one responding, and that may get stressful for you. I would think it would at least be helpful if you had someone else also helping with responding to the public (us).
Now time for me to try and play the JP version, or some PSZero. I really miss the game.

I’m starting to think that the western release is intentionally being delayed so that it coincides/gets ported to the PS4 which is scheduled to be released in 2014
Posted by Danphiroth on June 16th, 2013 at 3:28 pm
Comment # 500
@Danphiroth, i don’t think that’s the case and also the PS4 comes out this year during the holidays not in 2014.
though it could be on intentional delay if they want to released the Vita version with the PC version release, that would also require them to have content patched up to when they added the Vita for support (probably).
being 1 year behind isn’t that much of a problem nor do i see it as such, i think it’s quite normal considering what all needs to be done and the fact that this is SOA’s first dive into the PC F2P MMORPG market with such a large title (Spiral Knights doesn’t really count since it’s handled by Three Rings). The Team behind it needs all the time they can get considering PSO2 was given to them after the initial release so that puts a damper on things.

Ah, I was thinking that it seemed like the holidays this year seemed a better time to release the PS4, I was sorely misinformed and couldn’t find an actual release date at playstation.com. As far as the PS Vita, that does seem a lot more plausible and I’m hoping that it does get released for the Vita at the same time of release instead of waiting like JP had to as I would much prefer to play on the PS Vita/PS4.

Maybe this is redundant, but what exactly is it that’s making SEGA want the game’s information to be disclosed (of course I’m aware this is basically no different from what many are saying, and that it’s possible the question can’t even be answered.) Are there bugs in the system? Are you adding new content (such as English voices or changing Japanese customs to more familiar American/Canadian/British/other customs?) Details are not required, I would just like to know why it was necessary to delay.
It’s already close to being a year since the game’s said release date was announced, and since that backfired, where are all the fans going? 2013 English-speaking MMORPG players are totally ready for a grand adventure, and SEGA knows this! That’s why you’re trying to make PSO2 so great.
But really, how much is going to change from the Japanese version? Is it something that takes THAT long?

Don’t bother… I started a petition to SEGA many months back, asking the exact same questions, and to no avail. Edward will only repeat himself until his higher-ups give him something new to say… so, unfortunately, asking him or SEGA those questions at this moment will not work.
The question really is, is there anyone willing to talk to SEGA in person about these issues… travel to headquarters, schedule an appointment, and hit them with these questions up front? It really seems to me that there is some confusion, or even war going on internally in SEGA management for them to NOT want to say anything new about this release. This really has to hurt them, if it hasn’t already.
