Coming Soon: Zaxxon Escape

Thirty years ago, a primal force from the back of the alphabet invaded arcades in an isometric science fiction environment: Zaxxon, one of SEGA’s oldest of old-school salvos in the arcade wars of the early 80s.

Now, we are proud to announce the return of Zaxxon — or more appropriately, the escape: Escape From Zaxxon is coming soon to iPhone, iPad, and Android devices!

The all new game follows in the arcade footsteps — a fast-paced game to challenge your skills and take command of the ship from Zaxxon all over again.

Thirty years ago, the first wave of arcade fever was hitting America: a communal electronic experience unlike anything else, early arcade cabinets would bind a generation of kids together as shorthand for their shared experiences with an emerging art form (even if back then, no one wanted to call it that).

Let’s not be too fancy, though: arcade games were about fun and challenge. The best games had to be hard enough to take in money, but fun enough that you’d want to keep coming back. Zaxxon was indeed painfully difficult, but wanting to fly a starship against an alien horde is one of the most primal forces known to humankind.

Here’s a look at two different versions of the Zaxxon arcade cabinet — that wood paneling is how you know you are in for a quality experience:

Zaxxon was ported to a ‘who’s who’ of old-timey game systems, including the Amiga 1000, Apple II, Atari 400/800, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari XL, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Dragon 32, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Sega SG-1000 (the forerunner to the Sega Master System, for which the game also appeared in a 3D version) and TRS-80 Color Computer.

And just in case that whole video game fad thing didn’t stick around (and for a while, it seemed like it wouldn’t), there was even a board game version that Milton Bradley put out in 1982:
