Round One, Fight: AM2 Classics Available NowJust a reminder: the trio of classic fighting games we announced last week is live and ready for round one, starting today on PlayStation Network in North America, tomorrow (November 28th) on Xbox Live Arcade worldwide. The PlayStation Network release for Europe will be live on December 5th. The price is a sterling $4.99/£3.69/€4.49 for each (PSN) and 400 MSP each (XBLA). Here’s what’s releasing:
There you go — all three games are available today on PSN in North America, tomorrow worldwide for XBLA, and December 5th everywhere else for PlayStation Network. We’re excited to be able to bring you these games and it has been great to hear your feedback on the offerings — thank you to everyone who has contributed to the discussion about what sorts of games you are interested in seeing available for download in the future!

Great to see these games. Though I’m holding out on VF2 since I think it’ll be in Yakuza 5.

Five dollars for EACH? Thank you very much. I would pay 5 dollars for Fighting Vipers 1 and 2, but not for only the first one. Anyway, it’s good to see them again, even if it is for an absurd price.

Too bad there isn’t a Steam release. I would’ve preferred that more than Xbox 360, but I guess Xbox 360 will do. Glad to see these are being re-released!

Thanks, SEGA. Only the presence of Fighting Vipers is enough to heal all the pain and sadness from the world. Honey for the win. Bought the 3 and i am already playing online (which, btw, is perfect).

I’m happy to see VF2 but I would be thrilled if Sega made a VF collection similar to what Mortal Kombat did. I’ve been jonesing to play the original arcade version of Virtua Fighter for 15 years now.

Thank you so much for finally giving us proper ports of Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers after all these years. I was playing VF2 all night. It is seriously perfect.
As far as Model 2 games go, I would love to see SEGA Rally Championship classic next personally, but I am hoping some games that never got a home release get consideration too.

@SEGA_fan: “Only the presence of Fighting Vipers is enough to heal all the pain and sadness from the world.” Thank you! I only wish we had received that comment earlier, so we could use it as the game’s official marketing line.
@wizard: I think for now the focus is on delivering these games via digital download. There is a lot of extra cost to bring something to a physical package collection. One of the big benefits here is the price point, and especially for bringing back classic games, it ends up being a higher cost to justify a whole collection. That said, are there particular games you’d like to see from the AM2 catalog?

just downloaded sonic fighters and i’m loving it, but where’s the intro? It would had also been nice if it was a little harder (i got all the trophies within a half hour) so the online matches wouldn’t be based so much on luck. Other than that the game is awesome and an absolute gem for 5 “bones” (regular show). Hope a lot of people play it so the online stays alive and hopefully an even better sequel could be made with a larger roster made up of characters from every where (comics, TV shows, and games).

Hey Edward! So glad to see these old-school 3D fighters come home intact — and then some, in Sonic the Fighters’ case! (Referring to characters that got promoted from “hackable” to “unlockable,” naturally.)
You asked about other AM2 classics to make available for digital download. Daytona USA 2, Scud Race, Fighters Megamix, and the three Virtua Cops are my top choices from that developer, in that order.
Truth be told, the AM2 label carries a lot of prestige (and rightly so), but the other AM departments developed their fair share of classics. Confidential Mission, Planet Harriers, and the lovably absurd Dynamite Deka series are all games I’d love to play at home. Not to mention Star Wars Trilogy Arcade and the oft-requested Lost World: Jurassic Park, licensing fees be darned.
Lastly, but not at all least-ly: The original Virtual On is coming to Japan’s consoles, so I’d love to see it here, too — but definitely with an option for split-screen versus. I almost bought a 360 just to play VO:OT with a simple, affordable “twin stick” setup, but the fact that I couldn’t hold tournaments with friends at a party was a huge turnoff.
Many thanks! Keep the classics comin’!! =D
