Happy Hedgehog Day!On February 2nd in 1994, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released in the US, and it was dubbed βHedgehog Dayβ. For the past few years, we’ve revived this day as a holiday for all Sonic fans. We’ve got some great stuff coming up this year, but we’re not ready to talk about it just yet. Instead, we wanted to show you one of the unique items we have in our office at SEGA of America. This is a 10th Anniversary Sonic statue signed by Tom Kalinske, Al Nilsen, Madeline Schroeder, and Shinobu Toyoda. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind piece of Sonic history, and it’s pretty amazing.
From all of us to all of you… Happy Hedgehog Day, and thanks for being true blue Sonic fans.

Well, I give up. I can’t shake the feeling this goes at the end of a youtube URL, but I couldn’t find anything (moved numbers around, capitalization, everything). Even tried unscrambling it… Curse you ernirehdgr!
Best I could get was “hedge rinrr”. I feel like this is all one big “one month early” April Fools. SEGA’s mocking us, I can practically hear them laughing already.

Happy Hedgehog Day! My list of Sonic games has gone from:
Master System: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Chaos
Mega Drive: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
Sega Saturn: Sonic Jam, Sonic R
Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2
Gameboy Advance: Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3
XBox: Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Sonic Heroes
Gamecbue: Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Sonic Gems Collection
PC: Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Sonic Generations, Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing, Sonic and All-Star Racing Transformed, Sonic CD, and the Genesis Collection Sonic Games.
I just wish the Master System games had gotten some love in Sonic Generations. Really need to see about playing the Rush games and the ones I’ve missed. Even Sonic the Hedgehog ’06.

I think there’s more here than expected. I think “Red Herring” is a distraction to the picture of Sonic Adventure 2’s Sonic. If you didn’t know, Takeshi Lizuka is having a Q & A session with the unofficial Sonic Adventure 3 Facebook page. Now, can you see what I’m getting at? Red Herring is a troll in the post, and I think that the statue is hinting at the next game being Sonic Adventure 3. That is the best I can come up with, anyway.

Red herring is a fake valuable of sorts meant to trick you into forgetting the real valuable. Well here’s some things i realized that probably mean nothing. 10th anniversary= sonic adventure 2. That statue looks similar to the nendoroid sonics that were released a while back which resembled sonic from sonic adventure 1, in that they resembled classic and modern sonic. Iiuzuka did NOT say sonic adventure 3 was impossible. He said there was nothing planned yet.

And what was released on his 10th anniversary? SA2!
And why would sega just randomly show us the signed statue?
And why aren’t they ready to talk about the game they’re making?
well… just a guess… and i was probably thinking about the red herring a little too much… but… i think they’re making…

Red herring…Knuckles is red. Herring is a fish. Big the Cat catches fish. Knuckles and Big… Sonic Adventure… Red herring anagrammed is “her red ring” Red rings first appeared in Sonic and the Secret rings as “fire souls” Sonic and the secret rings had secret big the cat references. The 4 people who signed the statue all worked on Sonic Adventure 2. Hmm…

That is a 10th anniversary model. That’s not right. It’s not his 10th anniversary.
Sonic Adventure was announced for Sonic’s 10th anniversary.
Which means maybe, just maybe, they tried throwing us off with the “red herring,” and divert our attention from the photo?
And maybe the photo is suggesting… SA3.
Also, Sonic, in the Photo, is pointing to the “Find us” in the “Find us on Facebook”
… Clue?

Okay, we might have gotten “Red Herring” but let’s look at the REAL clues:
– SEGA mentions a Sonic statue from Sonic’s 10th Anniversary. Sonic Adventure 2 was released for Sonic’s 10th Anniversary.
– SEGA mentions Sonic The Hedgehog 3. The third installment to a popular series…
I say this almost every year, but I’m seriously hoping for Sonic Adventure 3

@Sonic52789: I already thought of that, but when I watched the live stream, the Sonic Adventure 2 staff did nothing more than chat vaguely about their times during the game and casually about Sonic in general. It may be Sonic Adventure 3 because the team hasn’t been together for a while but don’t get your hopes up.

“RED HERRING” is actually a Sonic 3 and Sonic And Knuckles reference.
It is the same as how they referred to Knuckles belief due to Robotnik “tricking” him that Sonic was the “villain”.
This is a revealing of Sonic 4 Episode 3.
The whole Adventure set up is just a ploy to hide that fact.

@Sheyla: No mystery here: It’s because Sega has used this name before in the blogs for Hedgehog day in previous years. Just like you cannot save a file with the same name as another on your computer without overwriting it, the blog management system at Sega automatically renames the page name so it does not overwrite past entries with the same name.

@Chris K. – You might be right, SEGA might announce Episode 3, but they still gotta announce a MAIN series Sonic game. When episode 1 came out, Sonic Colors also came out that year.
My guess is SEGA is hinting two things:
– Red Herring = Sonic 4 Episode 3
– Mention of SA2 and third installment of a Sonic game = Sonic Adventure 3

Don’t screw this up SEGA, you’ve been pretty good and consistent with Colors and Generations but if you mess it up now all that you’ve worked for will be lost, and i dont want another Sonic ’06 because that was just embarassing

@Sheyla: I reassert what I wrote. But, after looking through Hedgehog day posts from previous years, there is the remote possibility that there may be something beyond the surface of this when you look at it more closely. It is also my thought that they made several articles for today but only one made the cut, meaning that there was a lot of information that was originally going to be revealed but it had to be held back probably due to some special directive from the top brass. Still, my original theory of the blog page names simply being different makes more sense if you look at the links below. SEGA have said they were going to concentrate on their core franchises, sadly I’m worried this means more spin off titles which historically have been rather poor.
Generations was nice, but I have mixed feelings over the 3D/2D mix.
I’m STILL waiting for a proper 3D successor to Sonic Adventure. When it came out it was truly impressive, breath taking and fast.
Before Sonic ’06 was released, the teaser images had me soo excited, alas they did not reflect the game at all, not only the crippling loading times but world layout was not as I pictured.
I want a huge open world, the whole planet(s) (Mobius/Earth) and be able to zoom for miles.
Oh and evidenced by Wreck-It-Ralph, we need more Sonic Movies!!! and another cartoon series (Less Sonic X, more SatAM or I’d even accept another AoStH, look at how popular Phineas and Ferb is, I’m sure Dr. Doofensmirtz took some bases from Robotnik on that cartoon.)
SEGA just go all out on Sonic, really put the effort in, please no more spin off racing/Olympic/tennis/golf/party or “heroes” games. *shudder*

Hey guys at sega, just let us know if you’re working on a sonic game. Specifically if its a boxes game or a downloadable title. I think that you’d get much better sales if you’d stop teasing with this Sega stream you did earlier and with this whole “red harring” business. Some long time fans, like me, are getting tired of waiting for just a conformation of something about it. All we have is that article in a toy magazine about how you have a boxes sonic game planned…. But we haven’t even seen anything on it yet!
Anyway, happy hedgehog day

Why are you all speculating? I admire your passion, but if there’s a new Sonic announcement coming won’t it simply be “There’s a new Sonic game coming.”
Something we all know already. Obviously there’s a Sonic game coming at some point. There’s Sonic games always plopping out of the Sega factory. It’s not even a big deal.

@JT For actual “SONIC FANS” it’s a very big deal. What kind of sonic fan are you? THIS IS A HUGE DEAL! This could be the Sonic Adventure-styled game (Sonic Adventure 3) that iv’e been waiting 11 years for!! *wishful thinking…*
Or it could be Sonic Unleashed 4… in which case I’ll never buy the game, if it is…. I’ll switch to the comics/toys.
or worse, a “Sonic Adventure 3″ with Unleashed/Colors/Generations gameplay *shudders* in that case, I would just plain RAGE and petition/picket sega.
EITHER WAY Let the hype flow and let the sonic cycle begin! :D!

Since my last comment is still awaiting moderation, I’d just like to throw in another thing, just as a little test.
As Hifihedgehog suggested, I went back and looked at previous Hedgehog Day posts. While I was too lazy to again check every one of them today, there was one that stuck out, and it was the 2011 post, the one also featuring a shout-out to the movie “Groundhog Day”.
Why did it stick out? Why, it can only be because they made certain specific letters bold there, too! While it was less confusing than this one, I should note that apparently certain people picked up a certain clue, or figured something out, which resulted in an Admin editing their post. Clearly, looking through all these comments, nothing like that has happened here, so either the “Red Herring” trick is a good joke from SEGA, or we’re truly far from the answer.
So, let’s look at certain clues.
1) We can’t truly incorporate the idea of the “Hedgehog Day 3″ link being any truly special thing, considering the other one I referenced earlier was titled “Hedgehog Day 2″ in its link. Or perhaps, it IS hinting at something, considering, which I also mentioned already, it gave little hints in that one too. When you look at the Hedgehog Day posts without any hints, they’re titled “Hedgehog Day 2012″ and a mere “Hedgehog Day” link. While the last one makes it seem unlikely, there’s a 50/50 chance of there being something, or there being nothing.
2) Maybe we aren’t looking at the big picture. That’s probably because it was set to Private on their image hosting account, which is what I tried to point out in my comment that is still awaiting Moderation. Could there be any reason as to why it’s set to private? It’d be great to find out why it was.
3) Maybe instead of looking at the specific letters, we should try looking at the specific words that the letters are bolded in. They are: Hedgehog, Years, Coming, Instead, Anniversary, [Madeline] Schroeder, History, Hedgehog, Being True. They could have set any random letters on certain words to bold, but the fact they chose these ones specifically could mean something more.
4) Looking at “Sonic Stadium” (Which many, many people seem to trust around here), there was an article mentioning how this new game that is to be announced soon, highly likely of being in this month. has been ” in the works since before Sonic Generations”. Now, let’s head back over to that Hedgehog Day post from 2011. Supposedly, it was hinting over at Sonic Generations. It was titled in the link “Hedgehog Day 2″. The one before that was titled simply “Hedgehog Day”, no “2010” in the link. Now, assuming this info is true, we can look at how 2012’s Hedgehog Day post was named “Hedgehog Day 2012″ in the link, and how this one was titled “Hedgehog Day 3″, and assume that, in the chance that there IS a Sonic Adventure 3 game being hinted here, they did this purposely on 2012 to give the inclusion of the 3 as a hint, which would make sense for them to post about the 10th Anniversary Sonic statue, which many will know that the 10th Anniversary game was in fact Sonic Adventure 2.
There were one or two other things that I had picked up from this post, but sadly, my memory is complete garbage and I had forgotten the rest. If anything, I feel like this Hedgehog Day post is hinting towards nothing other than the next Sonic game being none other than Sonic Adventure 3, and the “Red Herring” being but a trap to make us not dig into the post much for clues. Either way, I will wait here for the actual announcement from SEGA as to what the next installment will be.

ernirehdgt <- Red Herring <- ''Her 'Red Ring'''. 2013/02/02 – 1994/02/2
I have in Mind ''Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode III'' which would have that element
In the Main series, For the 3rd time, it's supposed to be SA3 BUT. . .I think it would have another name because i think it will leave a ''footprint''[Return of Characters Since a Long Time, An Adventure Like Unleashed/Colors/Generations Style, New Features Like Any Modern Sonic Game, etc…]
Anyway, Why i can feel a Knuckles refference 0.0 ?

There’s no hiding that a new sonic game is close. Ever since unleashed i started weaning off sonic. I dont like the boost ganeplay its just boring that there is no exploration like the adventure titles. Im gonna say this that i dont exactly like sonic colors and generations its just an opinion that theyre childish with no action or story. Sonic 06 on its release was not the same as its announcement. It had big potential and i died for it but in the end its still SA3 somehow. They must bring back the adventure series for the mature audience. I hope we’re in for a treat this feb!!

Here is a post from the Sonic Adventure 3 fan page on Facebook.
*(Why Sonic 4 And 2D Only Game Play Didn’t Hit Records)*
The Sonic 4 series in it’s entirety is basically, at it’s core, a side by-product experimentation of SEGA with very little given to fund the series production. While Episode 2 was allowed a bigger budget, it was only a few extra dollars in corporation eyes, so it was still very limited.
In the eyes of fans, the amounts seem far greater, but to producers, it was pennies in the bucket…
Cheap Cash = Cheap Game
And this, in all ways of the term, is why Sonic 4 didn’t receive the proper popularity level it could have achieved.
And here is the reason why WE find to be infuriated.
With Sonic 4 is seeming to be a pretty big failure to some in the fan base, SEGA is considering putting the lid on the series. This means that due to the judgement of this one series, it could put pure 2D only fans in a deeper hole than those of us SA3 fans.
Why limit the 2D fans to the cheap market? Why eliminate pure 2D fans from the main console series because of Sonic 4? Why not put as much, or more into their 2D titles as they do the 3D games?
A pure 2D Sonic title on main consoles COULD be a bigger hit than Generations could have ever achieved even if DLC stages had been added if said 2D title had a budget the size of Generations or greater and given the Hedgehog Engine graphics and design treatment.
So is SEGA going to eliminate pure 2D fans from the consoles because Sonic 4 failed due to it’s cheap treatment? Are they going to restrict them to cheaper watered down handheld titles for the rest of their time as self owned corporation?
Only fans and time will tell what SEGA does from here on…
But because of Sonic 4, fans may never get a complete boxed 2D only title with a budget put in the amount it deserves…
The page isn’t stating they didn’t like Sonic 4, they are posting this to tell fans why the issues about it have risen and how it could have been a wonderful game, and they are telling fans about how SEGA will be tossing them back in a hole after Sonic 4 because of the series. SEGA will think fans hate 2D only when actually, they hate SEGA for being cheap, not the style itself.

I’m really irritated and bothered how you “fans” are constantly complaining about Sonic games. If you are a true fan, you’d be happy that you even have a game to play.
@T.K. The Hedgehog- You sir, are not a true Sonic fan if you’re going to ditch SEGA for the comics if it’s going to be Unleashed style gameplay. And really, Sonic is all about speed. Deal with it. Sonic today, with the speed he’s come to go at through levels, is going to have to have a fast-paced style. You don’t like it, go ahead and be a terrible critic. And the Sonic Cycle is caused by “fans” like you.

Prepare for chaos energy and the Force to fuse universes, as this is going to be the most riveting announcement of the year for two major franchises and their fanbases: It has been discovered that the phrase “Red Herring” as found in a Sega Blogs post is actually an incorrect sorting of the letters when, in actuality, the phrase should be “Ring Herder, ” a subtle play on words of the famous phrase “stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking, Nerf Herder” made by Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars series. Upon finalizing the purchase of LucasFilms, it has been confirmed by one of our sources, likely a well-paid Bothan spy who died to get us this information, that Disney has not only decided to make a Angry Birds parody of the world famous space drama but is also making a Sonic the Hedgehog parody in the next year. Seeing that the Sonic the Hedgehog series already mimicks many of the plot devices and characters in its series, such as with the clear nod that the Death Egg and Space Colony A.R.K make to the Death Star, all of this is sure be a pleasing combination to fans on both sides. In fact, George Lucas and Fugi Naka, who are secret penpals to one another, were said to have been seen together in the vast crowds of a recent Star Wars Weekend parade at Walt Disney World, casually talking between themselves and jesting about the future of both of their franchises. And both seem to feel confident that the best is yet to come because of this.
All of the original cast members of the original trilogy are set to reprise their original roles as the voices of their counterparts in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill, will be none other than our own blue dude with ‘tude, Sonic the Hedgehog, along with other familiar faces such as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik by Emperor Palpatine, Shadow the Hedgehog by Darth Vader, Amy Rose by Princess Leia, Knuckles the Echidna by Han Solo, Miles “Tails” Prower by R2-D2, Omochao by C-3P0, Big the Cat by Jar Jar Binks, Froggy as himself, Rouge the Bat by Mara Jade, and Team Chaotix by various X-Wing pilots. Likewise, serious consideration is being given for extending the cast to include characters from the Saturday Morning TV series, the Archie comic series, and even the Sonic X TV series due to a cult group of fans requesting Christopher Thorndyke to not be forgotten. However, matters have remained quite touchy as fans have argued over whether or not Sally Acorn should take Amy Rose’s place as Sonic’s and ultimately Knuckle’s romantic interest, whether or not Sonic should have green eyes and so forth, but until fans and Sega representatives can end these spats and come to a consensus, these additions are all very unlikely to occur.
But know this: The power of a Death Egg is insignificant next to the power of the Force… err… Chaos Emeralds.

@Ecchi: If you seriously think that every Sonic game with a boost button instantly makes it boost to win (And at the very least Colors will prove you wrong), then it’s probably best that you hit the road. Go back to playing Sonic 06, it may be terrible, buggy, and the story may be crap, but at least it doesn’t have a boost button.

Also, let’s take a look at SEGA’s pattern:
– 2011
* Sonic Adventure released on XBOX
* Sonic 4 Ep. 1 released
– 2012
* Sonic Adventure 2 released on XBOX
* Sonic 4 Ep. 2 released
Now so it’s 2013, time for part 3.
* Sonic 4 Ep. 3
* Sonic Adventure 3 (What we have all been waiting for)

SEGA I’m asking as a hardcore Sonic fan who grew up with the blue blur, please let Sonic Adventure 3 be announced soon. I remember playing the Dark Story for SA2 while my brother plays the Hero Stroy, and we thought it was the coolest game ever. We couldn’t wait to get back on and see what stages await, what happens next in the story, and most importantly, to see what the message was at the end of the game.
If you’re hesitating on making this game because you fear fans reaction, just know that I will be proud to play Sonic Adventure 3 because I know it will be amazing.
One more thing, you never know unless you try. That’s what Sonic would say

@Sonic Hog Speed – Just because i *AM* a hardcore sonic fan, doesn’t mean that i’m a stupid one. Only an idiot would pay for something that he or she DOESN’T enjoy. As a true fan, I want sonic to thrive and I want sega to take my money. ALL OF IT! :D! They can take my money in more ways than just games. so you DEAL with it :p
im not paying for something that I don’t enjoy, and that’s that. I could easily take $50 and blow it on a room full of official sega/sonic memorabilia instead of a game that i’m never gonna play again after the credits roll. What would you rather do?
ViVA la Sonic Adventure 3!

Red herring is an English-language idiom that commonly refers to a type of logical fallacy in which a clue is intentionally or unintentionally misleading or distracting from the actual issue. It is also a literary device employed by writers that leads readers or characters towards a false conclusion, often used in mystery or detective fiction.

My Suggestions to Making the Next Sonic Game That Everyone Can Enjoy:
In past Sonic games, the dialogue has been campy so perhaps you could look to be more like the Shrek films and find that balance of seriousness and humor that gamers of all ages can enjoy. Follow the Sonic Adventure 2 formula and have three teams with nine playable characters. Stick with the physics engine from Sonic Generations and build off of it.
Team Sonic
* Sonic (Light Speed Dash and Spin Dash should be in his natural move set)
* Tails (His special abilities should focus on his flying and swimming)
* Knuckles (Use all of his effective power moves from past games and NO TREASURE HUNTING STAGES)
Team Dark
* Shadow (Leave his personality and abilities as is)
* Dr. Eggman (Make him an edgier and more ruthless villain)
* Metal Sonic (Pattern him more after Classic Sonic and leave his abilities as is)
Team Rose
* Amy Rose (Allow her personality come off as more independent but still leave some Sonic fan girl in her)
* Silver (Pattern him after Modern Sonic and allow his telekinetic powers to be more interactive with his environment)
* Blaze (Her move set was great from Sonic ’06 so just allow her personality to shine through during the dialogue scenes)
* Attempt to make the game available on all platforms
* Continue to seek more new and creative level designs
* Possibly bring in Daft Punk or The Neptunes for a fresh approach on the soundtrack
* Bring back all Super and Hyper transformations from the Genesis Era

Red Herring = Knuckles. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles since Knuckles was tricked by Dr. Eggman into thinking Sonic was the villain.
That might be a clue that later this year they’ll make Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode III.
