SEGA Cup: Update from Justin Wong

The blog entry below was written by Justin Wong, who is training for the SEGA Cup 2013 Virtua Fighter Tournament.

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown SEGA Cup 2013

Hello Virtua Fighter Players and Fans,

I’ve been playing Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown for about two months now and I’m having a blast!  It’s been great to enter locals and majors and meet a lot of the key VF players.  My progress has been pretty good, considering I started out going 0-2 in a local tournament but was recently able to make top 4 at Final Round just two months later.  I really hope I can keep this momentum up.

Now I’m looking to take my practice routine to the next level.  I will be incorporating more of Jacky’s mixups to make my opponent think twice before striking.  I also am still very weak at breaking throws and fuzzy guarding so I need to practice both of those in training mode and in matches. However, by far the biggest thing will be learning character-specific combos.  I learned that the hard way when I was playing a fellow VF player, Shidosha, online.  He completely destroyed me with Taka and Jeffery because my combos weren’t connecting against their heavy weight class.

I haven’t fought against every character yet but I do feel pretty comfortable with Akira, Brad, Goh, Jacky, Jean, Jeffry, Pai, Sarah, Shun Di, and Taka.  It will still take some work to be really effective against the others but at least I know enough to be competitive.  If you guys want, I would love to play anyone online sometime!

My hope for the Sega Cup is to make the top 16.  I know that many top players will be traveling for this and I may not have enough experience to take out the masters, but the learning process will be fun and I am willing to endure it because I really like the game.

Thank you guys again for the support and here is one of my latest tournament matches from Final Round.  I hope to improve a lot more by Sega Cup and I’d love suggestions on what I need to do better.
