I was wondering if you could elaborate; is this a “reboot” and are the characters permanently being redesigned across the board (all future games, comics, merchandise, etc)? Or is this just another branch of Sonic, and we still have the Sonic games and merchandise that we’re used to? Sega… I’m really dissapointed… The gameplay looks fun, and the graphics are the most beautiful thing I’ve evee seen in a Sonic game… But those character designs…. are extremely terrible, Why you do this? the “Modern Sonic” would have been perfect for this, Sonic Lost World was cool, Sonic Colors was cool, Sonic Adventure was the best… BUT THIS?! WHAT’S THAT??!! The character design is horrible!! Has Sonic blue arms?! Has Knuckles had steroids?! Why are they wearing different shoes AND CLOTHES? Where are the robots from Sonic Lost World and Sonic Generations? And Eggman? EGGMAN IS NOT FAT!!!
I’ve always prefered classic design than modern. But this!!! Modern design is million times better than this!!!!!
However I think the argument is quite good. But I hope SEGA will have fixed that (the things I’ve mentioned before) before the disaster, because when I saw that character and robot design I started to cry because I’m a Sonic fan since I was 4 and I had never seen a murder like this. You have killed the history of this amazing character, but you have a chance to fix that.
P.S. It’s obvious that Sonic Team is not developing it.

Overall, I love the setting, it brings back distant memories of the art style of Sonic CD, the Sonic Anime Movie and to a degree, Sonic Underground. For this it already has a strength, the characters are good choices as well. Especially with (I assume) Knuckles getting more of a spotlight and Amy not being mostly the damsel in distress like in Sonic X. Finally, the designs. They’re definately not a bad step to take, but they are still flawed in that going overboard with Bandages is just silly, and perhaps Knuckles should be just a bit shorter, he looks too out of place.

Well this is totally my own opinion so don’t throw hate on me for me writing this.
This is a copy of what I commented on the sneak peek of the tv show:
”Smooth animation, cool graphics, technical side works, the shapes of the models of most of the characters works, but OH GOD THE NEW DESIGNS, WHY… ( Be prepared for tiny raging if you’re reading this! 😀 )

SonicMaster23, by that attitude then Sonic 1 would have been repeated for 20 years. Sure they’ve made some bad decisions, but every franchise does at times. I’m a hardcore Sonic fan and have been since the first game, and I have to say the blue arms were weird but I’m over it. I like the new cartoon, I think it will do really well. And the new designs kinda spice things up a little (although Knuckles should have been a little bit thinner. I always thought Knuckles with more muscles than the other characters would make sense considering his strength) and the redesign kinda makes things seem fresh. And the scarf is no different to when Sonic carried a backpack all the time in SaTAM. Tails? Love the new look. Very cool. And Amy? I just hope you make her more of an independant character (like the UK STC did) and show a strong female lead rather than a stereotypical anti-feminist idiot who drools over Sonic.

Looking at the placement of the bandages I assume it’s extra buffers/protection for when they use their powered up abilities or fighting styles. If you look at Sonic who uses just hands and feet, that’s where his are. Amy has none because she uses a hammer. Tails who only runs fast at times, but does not really do hand to hand, has them on his feet. Knuckles, who given he is buffed up now (not sure why, maybe the guardian thing) uses his body and digs underground so has a lot more than the others. As far as sonic’s blue arms…. he’s an animal with fur. I kinda always asked why he had naked arms when hedgehogs normally have fur on their limbs. I say, lets see what happens guys. Sometimes gameplay and good story are worth a some changes to design.

I don’t see this being the permanent design for the characters now, seeing that the game is just being made to partner with the cartoon.

There are aspects I am looking forward to, but other aspects I am fearing.

@ricardo – I don’t see this becoming Sonic’s death. You know as well as I do that Sega has always been about experimenting. I don’t know why, but they like to think outside the box. Who knows? This may turn out being better than we’re all expecting. :/

This is the best news I’ve read in a long time. I watch the promos of both the game and TV series and loved every bit of it. I’m digging the new looks of the characters and universe as a whole and hope SEGA will continue with the endeavor despite the constant griping and pestering of Sonic’s so called ‘fanbase’. I turn 21 this year and I’ve loved Sonic since I played the second game (first one I played) on the Genesis way back when. Despite past hiccups such as Sonic 2006, I love that SEGA is able to make it through all the negativity and reinvent their brand in a positive way. SEGA, please continue with this new Sonic and continue to innovate him and support him, because I do and I’m know I’m not the only.

I have been a fan forever, and despite the unfair nit picking from some, I love everything about Sonic boom! Knuckles’ redesign makes a lot of scents seeing how much stronger he is then Sonic, when you think about it if he was so strong he shouldn’t have been the same height and same muscle mass! Amy looks like a much stronger character and tails looks like a much more useful hero then in previous games were he did nothing. The co-op centered game play reminds me of Sonic heroes, or better yet what Sonic heroes should have been! I am so looking forward to this, I can’t wait THANK YOU SEGA you took a while to come to our favorite hero’s defense but I think this makes up for it!

I’m crossing fingers they can finally perhaps bring back some of the enemies from the older games that Sega haven’t found a place for in the Sonic Boom series. I would love to see Nack the Weasel, Bark the Polar Bear, Bean the Dynamite Duck etc show up in Sonic Boom since they have mentioned it will have OLD and new enemies, some we may know.

Would love to see Mighty and Ray back again as perhaps in one episode where they help Sonic and the crew. Its a really good chance to dig into the Sonic stuff that has been MIA and give it a new home. Make it happen Sega!!

As promising as this looks, I can’t get over Sonic’s blue arms and how Knuckles looks like he’s jacked on steroids, but the other character designs look great, but I don’t know about Eggman, I mean, he’s Eggman, thats why he’s shaped like an egg. So it seems like the main issue people are having with this is the new design. Its not something you like at first glance.
At first i thought all of the new designs were terrible and they should use the original characters, i mean, something CHANGED!

but upon reflection, the only character that’s really Bad is Knuckles. Sonics scarf hides his scrawny neck, The utility belt type thing tails has suits him perfectly, and the goggles aren’t unfamiliar as he wore those in the Riders series, too. Amy’s new dress looks much more natural compared to her original one.

Eggman i have mixed feelings about, he looks more Menacing, but that’s not the kind of villain Eggman is, so it Works, but it doesn’t work.

Knuckles doesn’t work at all and i hope all of the people who drew, revised, and authorized this design get fired.

the series seems a little on the childish side, but the game looks good so i will be getting that.

I’m finding Knuckles’ new look to be kinda weird, and Sonic’s arms being blue now is a bit odd too (to be honest though, I didn’t notice until I read the comments), but I am looking forward to seeing the show and hopefully playing the game.
Although I do hope that, if the episodes are only going to be 11 minutes long, they’ll do 2 episodes at a time.

You know, after Sonic Lost World i really thought sega were back on track with Sonic. He was everything he always should have been. Fast, acrobatic and moves fluently from sprint to roll and wall bouncing.

But then they pull this out and im done. knuckles looks like a dreamworks character (and i dont mean the good kind like in Dragons, but the really cheesy, triangle shape bodied, slanted grin kind).
Sonic’s voice actor isn’t great. His arm’s are blue!?????

And what’s with all the bandages? Looks like a designer going through a phase went overboard.

*sigh* Sega why do you do this to us. We want to love Sonic again but you just won’t let us when you do stuff like this.

I would LOVE a true sequal to the original Phantasy Star series.
For wii U!
Phantasy Star 5: A new generation.
Not a huge fan of the online games.
I miss the awesome stories and works and turn based RPG fun of the old series.
Also, what happen to Alex Kidd? Why not give him another go?
Maybe he would work better on newer consoles, where he failed on old ones?
New tech could be good for Alex.
And what about the other IPs?
I would LOVE a new Streets of Rage aka Bare Knuckle!
It could be a download only game.

Hm, Sonic looks great, except for the blue arms. Make them peach – his lanky blue body needs to be broken up somehow. I was originally distracted by his proportions, but the peach arms will avert some of the attention away. Everyone else except Knuckles I can live with. Knuckles used to be so cool and now he just looks stupid. If he just had wider arms that’d be understandable. He looks more top-heavy than usual.

As far as attire goes, I think they look great! ‘Just hoping Sonic will make use of that bandanna if he’s running through a desert or something.

Also, I must say that I’m a huge fan of the level designs, especially compared to what he had in Lost World. The Wii U is capable of so much and Lost World didn’t really make use of that.

The TV show looks great too, but from what I’ve seen so far, Sonic’s blue arms are going to distract me so much.

This made my skin cancer spread. You did that, Sega. That’s how much stress you put me under.

I wouldn’t mind if this were an alternate universe, like Mario has Paper Mario & Mario and Luigi set outside its main continuity; but I know that that’s not what this is. This is a Spyro->Skylanders esque REBOOT, the one horrific thing I hoped Sonic would never subject us to.
Just to show Mario isn’t the only example I can think of: Legend of Zelda! Has normal Link, Toon Link, and numerous timelines to boot.
Also Kirby. Tries various spin offs periodically. Pokemon too. (Pokemon Ranger and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon ringing any bells? Didn’t stop the main series)

PLEASE don’t just axe the Sonic us longtime fans know and love… if anyone at Sega even reads these. Give thought to duel franchises. It can work, if you put the effort into it. Hell, I’ll take on writing the dialogue for it for free if it helps (I have been writing fanfics for nearly a decade, I think I could handle it… though working for free’d kinda suck. but that’s how much I don’t want it to die)

@torcoolguy did you pay ANY attention to this blog entry? They are COMPLETELY rebranding the franchise. Any idea how much effort and money it takes to do that? There isn’t enough gas in the tank left for the previous series after this. They’re going ALL IN with Sonic Boom. Use your eyes, people!!

But they didn’t have to, and this doesn’t have to be permanent is what I’m saying. Fans like me will wait patiently for a year or two if there’s hope of returning to the previously-established universe. I’m still waiting for several plot threads to be tidied up in that series… which I know now won’t ever happen, but I used to be able to dream! (Blaze? Silver? Eggman Nega? SOMEONE EXPLAIN ALL THIS CONFUSION REGARDING THEIR PLOTLINES!!! Where exactly IS Nega from, anyway!?!?)

I honestly can’t wait for this. ^^ Yeah some of the designs are not the best choices, but hey, it’s nice to see they have plans for a new TV show. I loved Sonic X when it was on, and I think I’ll love this too. 😀 True fans stick with the new, not just the old. People who sit there and say the original Sonic games were always better, just need to stop, or the ones who sit there and say Sonic Adventure was the last, best Sonic game. -_- It annoys me to see so called ‘true’ Sonic fans hate on the new, but love only the old. I only have a few things to say… I LOVE IT! Really, I love it! I can’t wait! I am a very long standing Sonic fan, having played Sonic games all my life since Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I have played and loved every single Sonic game I could get my hands on, even ones that a lot of people have problems with. Anyway, I’ve been waiting, WAITING, for a new Sonic game that had a huge adventure-driven plot behind it like Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. I love this. I LOVE the new designs, especially Knuckles and Amy; I think the new looks really suit them in my personal opinions. I also love how Sonic looks in that little scarf, and the blue arms are perfectly fine with me (It’s funny, I didn’t even notice them until I saw someone else talking about them. They don’t make any sort of difference to me). I’m looking forward to this very, very much. I can’t wait to see the Sonic Boom series kick off with these models!

I don’t really mind the blue arms. I think they only did that for contrast with the bandages. Looks like they are treasure hunters. I give them credit for making such a big investment on Sonic and taking it to a fresh direction. I only wish I could play Sonic on a top end console (XB1/PS4). It’s not a big deal with Sonic’s design, they’ve changed a lot of things on him in the past and you people didn’t have problems with that!

Knuckles, however. I’m still a bit unsure about his design. He looks like he’s on steroids, as others have said. Though, that doesn’t take away from his character I suppose.

Tails is by far my favorite, his new design matches his character completely and I’m looking forward to seeing how his story goes from this reboot.

Also, are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman, they ONLY characters that will make an appearance? Or will characters such as Shadow, Blaze and Rouge make appearences as well? Because I believe they should be in the show too, due to the fact that the only other show some characters were in was Sonic X, which was based off Sonic Adventure 2. I would especially enjoy seeing Blaze and Silver being in the show, because they don’t get many main story appearences in the games.

I have been a HUGE Sonic fan ever since I was freaking born. I have no idea what this is. First off, Sonic’s arms are blue. The fans always bash toy companies and things for making his arms blue on mistake, and now SEGA is doing it? Shame. Second, Amy looks like a slut. Which hardly fits her. Knuckles looks like a full blown retard, I’ve never seen anything like it. I am a HUGE Knuckles fan and I like his normal non-mutated self. The characters (non-female) just don’t wear clothes. (Unless for special occasion) This is retarded all the way, and I hope it’s not a permanent change to the Sonic franchise.

Why CHAOS ESMERALDS don’t exist? CHAOS ESMERALDS are a basic part of Sonic saga. You CAN’T delete them from Sonic’s universe, and besides, where is Knucles from if Chaos Emeralds and Angel Island don’t exist?
I want you to fix that, because the game seems amazing (but the character design), but Sonic’s universe is not Sonic’s universe if CHAOS ESMERALDS don’t exist!!!

I didn’t like the design. People complained about the designs of all the characters (except Eggman) as if it’s not them anymore. They loved the older Sonic because it was him in the first place. The fans, the judges, they all didn’t like it that much. It didn’t suit them they said.
Amy looks like she’s all but I know she’s always ready to fight. Tails looks like he grew up from being ” Old Tails ” to ” New Tails ” it was good though. Sonic. Now Sonic is what I’m focusing. They expected him to be more him and not a wanderer from the desert. Where did the Green Hills Sonic go? I liked his fur in his spikes but the bandages in his legs made him look taller. Those blue arms are not fitting. They were peach in the first place. Now Knuckles’ face is like it’s been pasted in his new body. Knuckles was better before. Every fan loved him because it was good.
The reason why SEGA is losing his fans because of the designs. It was no longer them. Now people are saying goodbye old Sonic gang because they miss them. That’s my saying.

For those who say they hate this and want the old sonic, play the genesis games and stop complaining, I love the evolution of sonic and other games. My thoughts, this looks great, sega is doing a great job, you can’t have the old Sonic, it’s not the 90’s the systems are different, enjoy that. Sonic, hes grown just like the new systems, we can’t go back to that era, it’s gone, stop wishing for the past and speed into the future. Not all the games are going to be like the genesis games, the genesis had it’s day, did you think that sonic was really going to stay 16 bit forever?

I really like your designs and there was a lot of heart put into them and that’s what I really like although if you COULD it would be nice to make knuckles a bit smaller and I look forward to this. But what I look forward to the most is that there might just be a chance the freedom fighters will be in sonic boom it may not mean a lot but I just wanted a say in this because I feel like this could be something new. But there is one thing I do not want I heard something is going to happen between sonic and amy I do not support this because I bothers me to see sally never in a game with sonic and the cartoon was it and it went to the comics because maybe if we tried the freedom fighters people will really enjoy them. In the past too the comics were not as good and feel it was like a whole fan base war and that ever since Ian Flynn took over I think just maybe Archie is trying to get the Satam characters in the games. All I want and many others want is maybe a shot for them and maybe they can stay for a few years and see how it plays out.

Ta gra jest do kitu z Sonica zrobili pedała, z Tailsa fajtłapę, Knuckles wygląda jakby przesadził z siłownią, a Amy lodziara po za tym Sonic ma beżowe ręce a nie niebieskie, Knuckles powinien mieć normalny wzrost i swoje rękawice z jednym palcem, a nie takie jak Sonic, Amy mnie nie obchodzi bo i tak jej nie lubię. W team Sonic powinny być tylko trzy osoby a nie cztery Amy do nich nie pasuję i tylko Sonic powinien być szybki a nie wszyscy, a długie nogi niebieskiego jeża tylko go spowalniają.Nie wiem co Sega chciała przez to osiągnąć lecz wyszło im to beznadziejnie i albo niech wycofają tę grę, albo niech zmienią jej fabułę i zrobią na podstawie serialu Sonic X może wtedy zmienię zdanie na temat temat tej gry bo to co zrobili z Sonicem i Knucklesem to gruba przesada, jestem wielką fanką Sonica i jego gier i wszystkie mi się podobały aż do tej pory,lecz gdy zobaczyłam Sonic Boom stwierdzam że nie postacie beznadziejne i fabuła zresztą też nic dodać ,nic ująć.

I prefer non-aged-up Amy, but hey. Of the redesigns, I like Knuckles best. He looks like a fighter, which suits him. Tails’ goggles are super adorbs too.
