Free Stuff Friday - Sign up for Twitter

Free Stuff Friday - Example Tweet

2. Giveaways start around 11am Pacific Time on Fridays. We tweet a message with instructions and participants send a Direct Message (commonly called DM) in return. Send a Direct Message changes depending on what Twitter client you are using, we recommend reading this helpful tutorial before the giveaway day.

Note: @SEGA is verified, you can send a Direct Message without being followed. This is totally against everything Twitter has taught you about Direct Messages, but it really works.

Example of a typical giveaway:

@SEGA Tweets: “GIVEAWAY: Sonic T-shirt, size L. Be the 15th person to DM “Sonic Adventure” to win!”

You see this, and want to win it, so you send us a direct message that says “Sonic Adventure”. If you are the 15th person to do so, you are the winner! Quotation marks do not matter, capitalization does not matter, but spelling does matter! (Note, this is just an example, please do not Direct Message this example phrase).

3. We will announce the winner the following week across our blog in the next Free Stuff Friday giveaway. Please read the official rules at the end of this post to confirm eligibility.

Introducing Sticks to the Sonic Boom Franchise

Sonic Boom - Sticks Reveal

In advance of the highly-anticipated launch of Sonic Boom, the newest branch of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe announced earlier this year, SEGA is pleased to unveil Sticks, a brand-new character that will play an integral role across all Sonic Boom platforms. Sticks, a jungle badger who has spent most of her life living alone in the wilderness, will appear in the Sonic Boom TV series, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS video games, and merchandise, forming a common thread across all iterations of the new Sonic Boom world.  Sticks joins Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy to form the core ensemble featured throughout the Sonic Boom franchise.

“Sticks is a significant addition to the Sonic Boom universe and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise,” said Hiroyuki Miyazaki, Chief Content Officer for the Sonic Brand, SEGA of America.  “She brings a quirky personality and perspective to the team dynamic, and we look forward to sharing this energetic and funny new character with the world.”

YouTube Preview Image

Sticks is new to Sonic’s circle of friends– actually new to friends in general– and as the most primal character in the Sonic universe, she is a force of nature in every way.  Sticks is wilder than the other members of Sonic’s team with unparalleled animal instincts and extremely sharp survival skills.  She’s a fearsome combatant and a tenacious hunter who’s armed with handmade weapons at all times, most notably a handmade boomerang that she keeps in tow.

Her wildness means that her social skills need plenty of work and she’s not the most trusting individual. Full of outrageous suspicions, Sticks’ instincts often prove to be accurate. While the concepts of sharing, compassion and friendship are foreign to her, Sticks has a good heart and a genuine desire to get closer to her new friends, particularly Amy, who helps Sticks adapt to civilization. Sticks and Amy quickly become best friends, with Sticks willing to go to extremes to protect her new pal, a quality that will play out through new Sonic Boom content. Her eccentric character adds an endless amount of humor and surprise to the Sonic team.

Sonic Boom - Sticks Reveal
The Sonic Boom television series, coproduced by SEGA of America Inc. and OuiDO! Productions, will debut on Cartoon Network in the U.S. and on CANAL J and GULLI in France during the 2014/2015 season.  Every episode starts from a small character-driven story and explodes into an epic tale of saving the world, robot battles and more.

Serving as a prequel to the stories revealed in the TV series the Sonic Boom video games will deliver a totally different experience to previous Sonic games with collaborative gameplay at its core.  Developed in the U.S by California based Big Red Button Entertainment (Wii U) and Sanzaru Games (Nintendo 3DS) in collaboration with Sonic Team, this is the third title to be released as part of an exclusive deal with Nintendo.  Sonic Boom will take advantage of the innovative hardware of both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, with traditional elements of Sonic games, such as speed, also featured.  The videogame will also introduce exploration, combat and a new Enerbeam tether mechanic that will allow the Sonic Boom world to be discovered in totally unique ways.

Sonic Boom will be supported by a robust global licensing and merchandising program, anchored by master toy partner TOMY. TOMY’s line will showcase the new character looks, stressing interaction between core characters, and will feature new play patterns based on both the new games and TV series.  TOMY will develop a comprehensive toy range across a broad number of categories including plush, action figures, RC, role play, vehicles and novelty. Sonic fans can expect a high-quality, collectible toy line fueled by TOMY innovation and energized with speed, lights, sounds, motion-activation and action-performance.

Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared as a videogame character in June 1991 and instantly became an icon for a generation of gamers. Defined by his super-fast speed and cool attitude, in the years since he first raced on to videogame consoles Sonic has become a true global phenomenon with over 140 million videogames sold or downloaded worldwide across consoles, PC’s, mobile phones and tablets. SEGA’s iconic blue blur has also gone on to enjoy incredible success in many licensed areas, such as toys, apparel, comics and animation.

Executive producers on the Sonic Boom TV series are Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Meir and Jane McGregor on behalf of SEGA, and Sandrine Nguyen and Boris Hertzog from OuiDO!.  Bill Freiberger is Co-Executive Producer.  Other partners involved in the TV series include Lagardère Entertainment Rights for distribution for TV and Video and Lagardère Active TV Licensing & New Business for licensing and merchandise in France.

Summer of Sonic and Sonic Boom (The Event) 2014 Update

Many of you are anticipating the announcement of the two biggest Sonic community events of the year – Summer of Sonic and Sonic Boom (the event). We have an update today, but it’s a mix of excitement and sadness.

 SUMMER OF SONIC

Summer of Sonic 2013

Unfortunately, the organizers of Summer of Sonic have decided not to hold the event this year. Below is a statement from the Summer of Sonic organizers.

Every year, The Summer of Sonic team dreams of new ways to excite and inspire like-minded Sonic the Hedgehog fans, with large-scale conventions that aim to bring people together under a common theme.

Due to the nature of how the annual event is organised, each Summer of Sonic event hinges on the availability of key team players, as they help build the show in their spare time – alongside SEGA personnel who also must work around their daily duties.

With this in mind, it is after a lot of consideration that we have decided to put Summer of Sonic on hiatus for 2014. During this hiatus, we will take stock of the things we have accomplished with SEGA and then decide when we will be able to return for another round of Sonic excitement.

The team would like to express our sincere thanks for the continued support of our fellow Sonic fans, as well as our apologies for any disappointment this news may cause.

Since its debut in 2008, the Summer of Sonic has been a truly pioneering event, entertaining thousands of fellow Sonic the Hedgehog fans from all corners of the world with the mantra of providing a convention by the fans, for the fans.

Its creation also marks a significant milestone in the video games industry – these past six years this small team of adoring fans have enjoyed an extremely close working partnership with the company responsible for the products and characters they grew up with and love. This close interaction between brand and community is unprecedented to this day, and shows SEGA as a company ahead of the curve when it comes to fan engagement.

As such, the team would like to thank SEGA and the Sonic Team for its support for the convention – both past, present and future.

We wish them well and look forward to potential events in the future.

SONIC BOOM (THE EVENT)

Free Stuff Friday – May 16th, 2014

We’re back with more fun stuff in our weekly Free Stuff Friday giveaway. Today’s group of prizes is a mix of Sonic and Jet Set Radio! We’ve got some special lanyards that we gave out at PAX shows in years past, as well as a Sonic backpack from our Licensing team, and a special Jet Set Radio Soundtrack & lanyard combo. Yes, that means we’ve only got three prizes packs this week, but they’re bundles, which makes them bigger than normal prizes, so you know, they’re like twice as good.

Before we get to the prizes, big congrats go out to last week’s winners!

1. Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed PlayStation 3 – @JanJanshee
2. Anarchy Reigns PlayStation 3 – @deniscdali
3. Resonance of Fate PlayStation 3 – @Hanajimaismycat
4. Sonic Generations PlayStation 3 – @Timodus

On the Block

Free Stuff Friday - May 16th 2014

1. Sonic the Hedgehog backpack – We did mention this week was bundles, but we didn’t say what was in the backpack, did we? Nope, we sure didn’t, but you better believe something is in there and it’s a secret. What could it be?

Free Stuff Friday - May 16th 2014

2. Lanyard pack with classic Sonic keyring – Lanyards is kind of our thing for the Penny Arcade Expo show in Seattle, so this pack has two Sonic specific lanyards from Sonic CD and a Classic Sonic lanyard. The keyring is extra, thrown in because we thought it was cool.

Free Stuff Friday - May 16th 2014

3. Jet Set Radio Lanyard & Soundtrack – Both made to promote the re-release of Jet Set Radio to consoles and PC a few years back. Lanyard is tough to come by, I think we only passed this out at PAX and E3.

Sonic Fan Art Friday and Original Artwork

Recently, we decided to start featuring some of the great Sonic fan art out there. We announced Fan Art Friday earlier this week, and we’ve seen hundreds of art submissions already.  A lot of them have been truly amazing, and I can’t wait to show them to you in the weeks and months to come. One of the things we specified in that original announcement and call for artwork is that the pieces should be your own original work. Unfortunately, right out of the gate, that wasn’t what happened.

To be totally honest, we were concerned about doing Fan Art Friday, and this is why. There’s some amazing artwork out there, but how could we ever know for sure that the artwork someone submitted was their own original art? Trying to find the original source for something on the internet is kind of like having a bowl full of different ice cream flavors and trying to pick out just one of them. You can just never know for sure.

But ultimately, the benefits outweighed the risks. We have a long history of posting Sonic fan art, from way back in the Sonic Central days. There’s great Sonic fan art out there. We want to recognize the dedicated Sonic fans who make this. We thought about just posting artwork, without going through the risk of putting a name to it. But that wouldn’t be giving credit to the fans we’re trying to honor with this. Nope, the best way to do this was to be specific that people needed to submit their own original works of art. And then just hope that people were honest enough to do that, and not try to get attention for work they didn’t do.

The first piece of artwork we featured today was submitted by someone named Francine Rosales, via our Facebook page. It was one of the first submissions we received, and it’s really great artwork. I had personally not seen it before, and Francine’s name was in the bottom right corner of the artwork. I selected it to lead off Fan Art Fridays.

Artwork by Evan Stanley

Unfortunately, this was not Francine’s original work. Many fans alerted us to the fact that this was Evan Stanley’s artwork. We quickly updated the text on Facebook, and issued a correction tweet with a link to Evan’s artwork. We also replied to everyone who took the time to alert us of the issue. This doesn’t undo the damage that was done, though.

There’s a lot of Sonic fan art out there. We’ve seen a lot of it, but we can’t be expected to see it all. Let alone to know the original artist for all of it. It’s very difficult to find the original source of something on the internet. With the hundreds of submissions that we receive, and the time it takes to look at, evaluate, organize, upload, and schedule them all, we couldn’t do Fan Art Friday if we had to individually research each piece of art that was submitted. So we clearly stated that all submitted art should be your own original work, and left it at that.

In this case, Francine intentionally tried to pass off someone else’s artwork as her own. Right down to changing the signature in the bottom right corner to reflect her own name. We didn’t know this, or we never would have posted it. We’ll do our best to better evaluate the artwork in the future, but sometimes mistakes happen. We’ll always apologize and credit the original artist when they do. If you see that we’ve posted artwork by someone other than the person named, please let us know.

TL;DR – Please only submit your own original artwork for Fan Art Fridays. Passing someone else’s artwork off as your own hurts us all.

If you have submitted artwork for Fan Art Fridays that wasn’t your own original work, please let us know. You can send an email to communityteam@sega.com (with Fan Art Friday in the subject line), you can send us a message on our Facebook page, or you can send us a tweet. We won’t chastise you, and we won’t tell anyone. We’ll simply remove your submission from the queue.

We really, honestly, want to celebrate the fan art and fan artists in the Sonic community. Thanks for helping us do that.

Free Stuff Friday – May 9th, 2014

For this week’s Free Stuff Friday we’ve raided the PS3 vault for some SEGA games from the past. Grabbing the games, I had a conversation in the office about how amazing Resonance of Fate is – such a fun RPG from Tri Ace with a really incredible battle system. If RPG’s aren’t your thing, we’ve got Sonic Generations and All Stars Racing Transformed, or if you just want to brawl – Anarchy Reigns. Good stuff all around.

Before we head into the giveaway, big congratulations to last week’s winners!

1. Sonic Wallet: @Braves88Atl
2. Sonic Pixel Art Hat: @BIG_Phil89
3. Sonic themed Micro Raschel Throw: @CuteLittleChaz
4. All Stars Racing Transformed Shadow toy: @kevisawesome123

Now then, on to the giveaway!

On the Block

Free Stuff Friday - May 9th 2014

1. Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed PlayStation 3

2. Anarchy Reigns PlayStation 3

3. Resonance of Fate PlayStation 3

4. Sonic Generations PlayStation 3

How it Works

Free Stuff Friday - Sign up for Twitter

1. You must have a Twitter account and be following @SEGA on Twitter to be eligible. If you don’t have a Twitter account, you can create one by going to http://www.twitter.com and click the green “get started — join!” button in the center of the page.
