So you want to work at SEGA? (Epilogue)

The following blog was written by Aaron Webber, aka RubyEclipse.

———————————
I rode the elevator up to the lobby that morning, the same as I had all six years prior. I smiled at the SEGA lettering behind the reception desk, at the Sonic statue sitting there, and at the monitors displaying the video game trailer our team had created just months before.

aaron post

That morning, I walked in through different doors – ones that that led away from my desk. This side of the building had just been renovated to a lounge, and it was next to Legal and HR. I thought quietly about the Green Hill Desk which had been torn down to make way for that lounge, and was filled with nostalgia about both people and a time that had long since moved on. That was four years ago, I realized.

My heart was beating a little faster now, as I walked into the room of the HR director. I’d been debating this moment for an entire month, and even now I was a little unsure if the time was right. After a smile and a few pleasantries, the heart of the matter arrived. They were some of the hardest words I had ever had to say to anyone at SEGA, but I knew that today I had to face them:

“I think it’s time for me to put in my two weeks,” I said.

SEGA of America office

I started at SEGA when I was 19.

I had a big dream, and lots of passion, and spent way too much time playing SEGA games. It was thanks to this combination, but particularly that passion, that new doors began to open. I was given the chance to leave my entire life behind me to work at SEGA, living in San Francisco. Without even knowing where I would stay or if I could make ends meet, I said yes.

I left everything – my family, my friends, and perhaps some rational thinking – behind me in order to pursue that dream. In hindsight, it was one of the best decisions I have made in my entire life.

I still can’t believe how surreal it has been. To go from being a fan to representing the fans, to representing SEGA – and now, with my final day on the horizon, I find myself filled with a desire to write one more journal in this series. A snapshot of my life at this exact moment, and a message of encouragement to all of you out there who seek to live for your dreams, too.

aaron 2

Thank you all, as fans and as friends, for always being so supportive. Meeting you at conventions, greeting those of you who came to our lobby, and seeing you at events like Sonic Boom were the moments that rejuvenated every aspect of the job for me. I posted your fan art at my desk and read each letter with a warm smile, happy to know people out there really cared. I’m humbled and honored to know each and every one of you.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I’ll state it one more time: Never give up on your own dreams. (Far too many people in this world do.) It was Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist that initially spurred me to send in my resume to SEGA years ahead of schedule, and I recommend the book to anyone out there who has an evening or two to read it.

Finally, it’s important to remember one’s roots: A huge thank you to Julian who believed in one of his moderators enough to interview him, and then offer him a job. My life would have taken such a different turn if not for that, and I’m eternally grateful.

Each of you reading this from SEGA: thank you all for making my six years here so wonderful, and full of so many amazing memories. I will always look back fondly upon my time here. I know you all will do wonderful things in the future, and I can’t wait to see what it holds.

To all of the fans out there: I’m sorry I couldn’t stick around longer. Sometimes, we know when it’s time to move on – and that day finally arrived for me. Against all logic and sane thinking (once again), it’s time to follow my dreams in a new direction entirely, this time outside of the industry.

But, before I do that, I’d like to announce an all-new-possibly-fictional SEGA game, releasing in 2025 exclusively on the Game Gear Mark IV:

aarons big fishing adventure

Take care, everyone, and thank you all, once more.

Free Stuff Friday – June 27th, 2014

SEGA@E3 2014

This week’s Free Stuff Friday flashes back to just a few weeks ago when we were in Los Angeles for the E3 convention. This year featured a pretty snazzy SEGA E3 logo, which was placed throughout our blogs, Facebook, Twitter, as well as our event t-shirts. The t-shirts were pretty popular, they were so popular we have no leftovers in any size other than Small.

So for this week’s giveaway, we’ve got 6 total shirts, all in a Men’s small size. If you can’t wear it, perhaps you could remake it into a stylish headband, or affix to other clothing in creative ways. All we know is, this shirt could be yours if you participate!

On the Block

Free Stuff Friday
All six prizes: a Small SEGA E3 Shirt.

How it Works

2. Giveaways start around 11am Pacific Time on Fridays. We tweet a message with instructions and participants send a Direct Message (commonly called DM) in return. Send a Direct Message changes depending on what Twitter client you are using, we recommend reading this helpful tutorial before the giveaway day.

Note: @SEGA is verified, you can send a Direct Message without being followed. This is totally against everything Twitter has taught you about Direct Messages, but it really works.

Example of a typical giveaway:

@SEGA Tweets: “GIVEAWAY: Sonic T-shirt, size L. Be the 15th person to DM “Sonic Adventure” to win!”

You see this, and want to win it, so you send us a direct message that says “Sonic Adventure”. If you are the 15th person to do so, you are the winner! Quotation marks do not matter, capitalization does not matter, but spelling does matter! (Note, this is just an example, please do not Direct Message this example phrase).

3. We will announce the winner the following week across our blog in the next Free Stuff Friday giveaway. Please read the official rules at the end of this post to confirm eligibility.

Suffering from combat fatigue and spread out on enemy soil, US Forces have fought their way deep into Europe, driving back the German war machine. An army made of citizen soldiers; they have been pitted against a hardened professional military with over four years’ experience. Introducing “Travel Tuesdays” for Sonic the Hedgehog!

London

Sonic is a world traveler. From arcades in Tokyo to amusement parks in London to events in the US, Sonic’s been everywhere and he has fans all over the world. This is your chance to show us Sonic in your world with the new Sonic Travel Tuesday!

The idea is really simple. You take a photo of Sonic and/or his friends (can be a Sonic figurine, plush, whatever), and submit the picture to us! We’d love for you to take a photo with something famous or historic (like this photo, taken at the Tower Bridge in London), but you can send us a photo from your vacation, something interesting in your town, or an interesting situation (eating a giant donut? watching a meteor shower?).

IMPORTANT: All photos must be your own original creation. Do not find photos on the internet and submit them to us.

You can submit your photo one of four ways:

Facebook – Send us a message from our Facebook page with your image attached. Be sure to specify the location the photo was taken in (for example, Tower Bridge in London, UK), any other information you want to tell us about the photo, location, or situation, and how you want to be credited. If you don’t submit how you want to be credited, you will be credited by your Facebook name.

Twitter – Tweet your photo to @sonic_hedgehog with the hashtag #traveltuesday. Be sure to specify the location of the photo, any other info you want to tell us, and how you want to be credited. If you don’t submit how you want to be credited, you will be credited by your Twitter name.

Instagram – Hey, did you know we have an Instagram account now? We do! Instagram your photo and include @sonicthehedgehog and #traveltuesday in the comment, or you can just send it to us via Instagram Direct. Be sure to specify the location of the photo, and any other info you want to tell us. We’ll repost your Instagram post to our feed, and we’ll credit you with your Instagram username.

Email – Email your photo along with where it was taken, how you want to be credited, and any other info you want to tell us to community team@sega.com with the subject line “Travel Tuesday”.

Thanks for participating, and we can’t wait to see your photos!

Alien: Isolation E3 2014

My drooling hunter gruesomely killed me no matter what I tried to do, be it crouching quietly behind barrels, hiding in a locker, or torching the fiend with a flamethrower. One full blast – all I had – merely scared the pursuer off, but my new found safety was always brief.
