3 Limited Edition SEGA sweatshirts up for grabs in today's giveaway

Free Stuff Friday! That’s today and after a busy busy week here at the SEGA HQ we are just now posting the giveaways that will be headed to our twitter page in just a few short hours! In honor of the fantastic weather here in the SF bay area, we’re giving out 3 of our very popular and very limited SEGA hoodies – just in time for Summer!

On the Block

1. The Dreamcast hoodie – XL ONLY – we only have 3 of these left in our merch room and we only have them in Extra Large.

2. SEGA Controller hoodie – S, L, XL, and 2XL - Another favorite for SEGA fans, this blue and white hoodie matches comes with 4 embroidered SEGA controllers across the front. Extremely limited, only 300 were produced in this batch.

3. Aliens: Colonial Marines hoodie – M and L - Our most recent hoodie, created for a recent press event and our official team colors for the PAX East show. Only 200 have been produced.

How it Works

1. You must be following us on Twitter to be eligible. (If you don’t have a Twitter account, you can create one by going to http://www.twitter.com and click the green “get started — join!” button in the center of the page.)

2. At random times on Friday, we will announce the prize we are giving away, a word or phrase, and what number of response you need to be to win. Send us a direct message (DM) via Twitter and be that number to win the prize. (@ replies do not count as entries!) We only accept one direct message per person per prize!

Example:

We tweet “GIVEAWAY: Sonic T-shirt, size L. Be the 15th person to DM “Sonic Adventure” to win!”

You see this, and want to win it, so you send us a direct message that says “Sonic Adventure”. If you are the 15th person to do so, you are the winner!

Quotation marks do not matter, capitalization does not matter, but spelling does matter!

3. All followers are eligible to win all prizes, unless a restriction is noted. Restrictions are usually due to the prize being region-locked. For example, US games that won’t work on UK gaming systems. There may also be age restrictions due to the rating of the game.

4. We will announce the winner on our Twitter feed once eligibility is confirmed.

Other Assorted Information:

Free Stuff Friday duties alternate between the London and San Francisco offices and are done during business hours (usually mid-morning) in our respective time zones.

No, you can’t know what number message you were – so please don’t ask! We will tell you that the information is classified!

If you have questions during the giveaway, please contact us with an @reply. As you can imagine, we get a whole lot of direct messages during the contests and there is a very good chance we will miss your question if it is sent as a DM.

How to Send Direct Messages on Twitter

Due to a change in our account status with Twitter, you should be able to send us direct messages without us following you. However, third-party applications may not allow you to.

There are a few ways to send us a Direct Message on Twitter. The easiest way is:

Log in to your Twitter account.

Click on the person icon and select Direct messages from the drop down menu.

You’ll see a pop up showing your Direct message history. Click the New message button, highlighted below.

In the address box, type the name or username (SEGA) of the person you wish to send a message to.

Enter your message and click Send message.

You may also select the “direct messages” tab from your Twitter homepage, and select SEGA from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. Again, if you don’t see our name there, it’s probably because we’re not following you. Let us know, and we’ll follow you. If you still have questions on sending direct messages, please visit Twitter’s Help Section.

There are also many Twitter clients that you can use instead of using the website. These include TweetDeck, Twitteriffic, Tweetie, and Twhirl. Each of these programs works differently, so you’ll want to figure out how to send a direct message on the program you use. If you want to send us a test message, we’ll let you know if we received it or not. Please make sure your message says “test” somewhere.

Game Over Man! The Life of a Colonial Marine is a Dangerous one in Aliens Infestation!

Today we have our final Aliens Infestation blog from the Wayforward development team. This weeks’ topic is all about the challenging, and unique, death mechanics in the game. Just like in the movies, a Colonial Marine can meet his end at moment’s notice… Our final blog is a two parter, with part 1 below and part 2 featured on the Gearboxity community site.

Death and Rescue

Adam Tierney (Director, Wayforward):

One of the really standout features of the game is the notion of true death. Unlike most action games, where death means (at worst) a brief wait to respawn, or getting kicked back to the previous checkpoint, we decided that this game would feature a true death mechanic, rarely seen in modern games (and most notably in Nintendo’s Fire Emblem series). As mentioned previously, James Cameron’s formula for success in the 1986 film was essentially:

1) Make the viewer become attached to a group of memorable, funny, endearing badasses
2) Then kill them off one-by-one

Doing this crafted a tremendously-impactful experience for the viewer, and made them root that much harder for Ripley and Bishop during the film’s climactic battle. Following suit, we knew we could create a group of memorable Marines by giving them individual names, faces, dialogue, and backstories. But that wouldn’t really mean anything if players could hold onto their favorite characters indefinitely. We needed to make it tough so that players would have to really WORK at keeping their favorite Marines alive. And ultimately, we the developers don’t WANT them to be kept alive, because the game is structured to encourage losing Marines and recruiting new ones to replace them. That’s right, gamers: the developers are trying to kill your favorite soldiers. Bwahahahaha…

Players start the game with four initial marines: Cameron (the hero), Whistler (the hopeless new recruit), Paulson (the walking mountain), and Johnston (our tough-as-nails chick – our ‘Vasquez’). After the opening story sequence, the player selects who to begin playing as, and can swap control to any of the other marines inside one of the game’s Save Rooms. Players begin the game with a xeno-free, slow build intro, navigating the ship, picking off minor enemies, and generally just getting acquainted to the setting (as in the films).

Then the carnage begins. As the player’s character takes damage, their HP Meter will drain (which can be replenished by grabbing health packs). Outside of Save Rooms (which aren’t plentiful), there’s no way to switch between Marines. So if your character is on the verge of death, you’d better find some health packs or start playing very cautiously to keep them out of the grave.

When the HP Meter is drained, that character is dead (sort of). Say goodbye, because you’re never going to see their portrait, or hear their voice again. You even get a big, fat, red X over their portrait in the Marines Roster, and their status is changed from “Active” to “Deceased”. Once they’ve died, their radio screen cuts to static (as in the film), and the player is asked to select from their remaining soldiers. This is potentially a very tough choice; you want to select the characters you enjoy playing as, but at the same time you know that using them could result in losing them. So there’s an interesting ‘play vs. save’ dynamic that we noticed as people played the game. We purposefully made the first Queen battle a rough one, to get players used to the idea that it’s okay to lose a Marine or two. Sure, it’s possible that players will kill her without losing a life. But more commonly, they’re gonna lose a few good men in battling that initial beast.

If that character dies, you select the next one, on and on until your last Marine dies and it’s Game Over, Man! At this point, you’re returned to your last Save Point, with whatever Marines were alive at that moment. And this created an interesting dilemma for us: if losing all lives brings back your dead marines, what’s to keep players from just powering off their system and hopping back to when their favorite characters were alive? Aside from the obvious (a loss of any progress made since the last save), the answer was in the ‘tease’ of new soldiers.

Head over for Part 2 on Gearboxity!

Go go go! The final part of the final developer diary is just a click away – do it now! Also be sure to head to our flickr page for updated images and full resolution marine bios. We hope you’ve enjoyed these blogs and now we want to hear back from you! Tell us your Aliens Infestation experiences in the comments below!

Aliens Infestation, the newest from SEGA and WayForward is now available worldwide! Developed for the Nintendo DS, Aliens Infestation is a 2D sprite based side scroller that returns gamers to a familiar world within the Aliens franchise, where you’ll encounter chest bursting, face hugging, and mini-mouth face stabbing, among many other epic Aliens moments. It’s not all Colonial Marine death scenes though, there’s plenty of key finding, blowtorch using, smartgun blasting, power loader driving, and more!

The reviews have been coming in since the recent European launch of the game on September 30th. Lots of good stuff too, which we’ve combed over the net to deliver to you, saving you the painstaking googling – Read on!

Infestation is a game that any fan of Metroid, Aliens, or classic action games in general should grab. It’s a wonderful verse in the DS’s swan song. I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Warrior aliens, facehuggers and chestbursters roam around each area’s corridors, with only a small beeping dot on your motion tracker telling you there’s something nearby. There’s a real feeling of suspense when you’re wandering around an area that you know to be infested with aliens, especially when your ammo is running low and you realise you’re going to have to resort to your useless pistol.

The tension in pretty much any room in this game is effective; you’ll find yourself taking a minute in a clear room to load shotgun shells individually, and slowly; you’ll hide behind crates to fire at robots from cover. While you do find more weapons, unlike other games in the genre, you never become an overpowered super-soldier capable of blasting through earlier areas with abandon. There’s no Screw Attack equivalent. From beginning to end, you risk death from almost any random enemy, unless you move carefully and conserve ammo.

WayForward wastes no time in creating an imposing atmosphere about the USS Sulaco, where your adventure begins. Metallic clanks and hisses are accompanied by an ominous synth-led soundtrack, creating a slow-burn tension through the early stages that is released by one of the cheapest scares in the book. (One which I, playing in the dark with headphones turned up to full volume, was completely suckered by.)

On the Block

This week we have six identical packs, each with one of the following prizes included. Good luck!

1. Aliens Infestation - the Nintendo DS Game! The game is completely region free and can be enjoyed across any Nintendo DS, or 3DS system.

2. Aliens Infestation Buttons – four buttons displaying different Colonial Marines meeting their end from various Alien life forms. Facehugger, chestburster, and full on Alien with mini-through-head-death. These were originally given away at our PAX 2011 booth and were quite the hit!

3. Aliens Infestation Animated Lenticular – This framed art piece features a fully animated Alien stalking and attacking a Colonial Marine. The animation is pulled directly from the in-game sprites and is, in essence, a moving picture in a static format. In the image above you can catch the last frame when the Marine is pushing the Alien back with a burst of gunfire from the Pulse Rifle. We’re really happy with how these turned out and cannot wait to get them out to 6 lucky winners! **Only 200 of these were created, they are extremely limited!**

(@ replies do not count as entries!)

How to Send Direct Messages on Twitter

Due to a change in our account status with Twitter, you should be able to send us direct messages without us following you.

There are a few ways to send us a Direct Message on Twitter. The easiest way is to go to our Twitter page and select “message” under the “Actions” heading in the side bar. If you do not see “message”, this means that we are not following you. Please send a message to @sega to let us know, and we will follow you. When you click “message” you will be taken to a window where you can type a message and press send.

You may also select the “direct messages” tab from your Twitter homepage, and select SEGA from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. Again, if you don’t see our name there, it’s probably because we’re not following you. Let us know, and we’ll follow you.

This week AvPGalaxy.net has our 3rd developer diary from WayForward

Alien Infestation is nearly here, launching in European territories on September 30th and arriving in North America on October 11th! With only a few days a way, we’ve got another developer diary from the good folks at WayForward to help ease the pain of waiting. This week’s blog features the development of the characters, the Colonial Marines, the folks you’ll be guiding through the sidescroller Alien Infestation.

We’ve got a small preview of the blog here, with the full text appearing on AvPGalaxy.net, fansite for all things Aliens, Predator and an excellent reference for all things in between, enjoy!

Adam Tierney (Director, Wayforward):

So we’ve talked a lot about developing our tiny Marines. But what exactly went into that? Just how fleshed out are these soldiers, and why should players care when they die if there’s always another one right around the corner, waiting to take their place?

The game features 20 Marines: 19 of which are playable, and one which is your Commanding Officer, Patrick “Stainless” Steele. Steele contacts you via radio throughout the adventure to offer intel, and to give the playable character someone to chat with (in what would otherwise be a pretty quiet game).

Because of the tremendous amount of animations required for our Marines (multiplied by every type of firearm), it wasn’t feasible to actually animate 19 different character sets. If we’d attempted that, we’d still be animating the game right now. So instead, we decided to differentiate characters in the following four ways…

(continued…)

To be Continued – Right Now!

If the above has you interested, you’ll want to catch the rest over at AvpGalaxy.net. Read up on the rest of the character’s developer diary and also check out individual character bios detailing backstory on a few of the marines you’ll be playing as!

WayForward returns to discuss tension, fear, and pacing in the newest developer Diary for Aliens Infestation

What’s that? Fear? On a Nintendo DS? You’d better believe it and even if you don’t we have the good folks from WayForward tell you all about their project plans. In our second blog about Aliens Infestation, the team talks about how they crafted the experience and came up with new ways to frighten and disturb players. Read on!
Level Design and Crafting Fear

Level Design and Crafting Fear

Adam Tierney (Director, WayForward):

So now that WayForward has signed on to develop the Aliens project with Gearbox and Sega…what next?

We’d initially pitched our publisher on a Metroidvania-style exploration game, which seemed to fit the license. For those that aren’t familiar with that term, it refers to the backtracking, lock-and-key nature of games like Metroid and Castlevania. Rather than rushing forward, the player is forced to search for specific objects, which allow them to bypassed previously-locked areas, and expand their game world section-by-section. The world of Aliens is filled with memorable gadgets and technology, so it was very easy to come up with locks and keys in this sense: welded doors, xeno-gunked passages, key cards, etc.

We knew early on that it was important to play up the ‘hidden passages’ aspect of the films, in order to give our creatures a believable method by which they could leap out of the floors and ceilings. So each of our game environments has two areas: the main floors, and the air ducts above and below those floors. Players essentially ‘warp’ between the two types of areas each time they step through a hatch in the ceiling or wall. By locking the players out of standard paths, and forcing them to hop into these confined, dark enclosures (often barely tall enough to crawl through), we limited the player’s options are (hopefully) created unsettling situations.

The other things those air ducts allowed us to do was connect the Xenomorphs’ world to our own. In most of our game environments, there are multiple alien Queen hives hidden in between floors, accessible only air ducts. Creating these nooks was a fantastic opportunity to play up the organic composition of those areas, in stark contrast to the more structured, angular environments of the human-built areas. In fact, we even split the art load between two different pixel artists (Mads and Telemachus), so that the two areas would feel very foreign to one another. These hives would play a critical role in the game, in regard to rescuing captured squad mates (but more on that later).

Another critical element was creating situations where the player would lack confidence, and fear what’s ahead of them. This proved to be one of the biggest challenges in a tiny, pixel art game on Nintendo DS. Could a 2D pixel game be scary? Was that even possible? We decided to focus on two areas of the game to foster our fear: visibility and resources.

Regarding visibility, we felt that if we could prevent players from seeing their adversaries, or seeing the full environment around them, it would make them apprehensive about moving forward (in spite of the pixel art style). This was accomplished first, and most directly, by occasionally turning the lights out. Many areas of the game are completely dark, and block the player from progressing until they’ve located a portable light source. Even then, the flashlight (once located) will only shine a thin beam forward, in the direction the character is currently facing. It does nothing to illuminate what’s behind or above the player, unless they turn to face in that direction (which then obscures what’s in front of them). By limiting visibility dramatically in these sections of the game, we were able to cultivate that uncertainty in players.

Our xeno spawn systems helped elevate that unease even further. Basically, the two primary ways that xenos can appear in this game are: slinking out of the shadows, or popping out from the floors/ceilings. The first approach is a subtle, uneasy entrance. A xeno is wedged into the architecture (as it was in the final scene of Ridley Scott’s alien). The player knows it’s there…or do they? The hidden xeno will remain lodged in the wall, completely still, illustrated in a way that matches the sci-fi art style of the environment. It’s not until the player passes the creature, that it slinks out of its hiding space, engaging them in combat. It was important to never cheat the player in this regard: you can always see highlights of the alien resting in its nook; they aren’t totally invisible. But because of the complexity of the environment’s art style, players can never be completely sure if something is there, without getting close and checking it out first-hand.

The other prominent xeno entrance is leaping out at players. Instead of having our xenos just standing around, waiting for the player to approach and attack them, they’re more often hidden in the floor and ceilings (just as in the films). If the player rushes through an area too quickly, the xeno will leap out, knocking them down and brutally attacking the player as a punishment for their impetuousness. Instead, the safe player must either proceed slowly and cautiously, so that they have (just) enough time to dodge when a xeno bursts out, or they must learn to perfectly time a dodge roll, in order to zip past the creature just as it bursts forth. Playing sloppy and failing to adequately take either approach will result in pretty quick death.

When the player gets the Motion Tracker, this heightens the fear even more, with the player now able to tell roughly where those aliens are hiding, and inching toward them very, very slowly with the anticipation that they’re going to jump out any second. Sometimes, giving the player more information can actually make them feel less confident.

The other area of the game we felt we could build fear, as mentioned, was in resources. Nothing’s frightening when you can unload unlimited Smart Gun ammo against your enemies. So with the exception of the single-shot pistol, every weapon in the game has a limited amount of ammo (even the pulse rifle). By forcing players to spend their clips cautiously, we’re able to milk the action. Rather than unloading wildly on a creature (and risk wasting a few shots), the player learns to fire in short bursts. Doing this, of course, takes longer to kill each enemy, and allows each enemy to get closer to the player than if they’d just held the firing button down continuously. In this sense, our enemies will force players to backpedal while firing (another important mechanic, detailed in the next section). So now rather than tearing through enemies, the player is blasting out conservative rounds, praying that they’re got enough ammo and (hallway space) to destroy the creature before it slices them to pieces.

Once we had the mechanics for these elements figured out amongst the team, we were able to proceed with confidence that our game (while pixel and handheld) would be intense. And ultimately, the formula for nailing each of these elements was right there in the original films.
Metroidvania or Lock and Key – Gameplay explained

Metroidvania or Lock and Key – Gameplay explained

Cole Phillips (lead designer):

As fans of the Metroid series know, the Alien films had an influence on many aspects of the game. From the pacing to the art style to even similarities in plot devices, Metroid has always given off that ‘Alien vibe’. When we were tasked to design a new 2D side scrolling Aliens game, I couldn’t believe it! I’ve wanted to make a game of this type for some time, and thought this would be a great opportunity for that.

We decided to combine the action shooter genre with ‘MetroidVania’ style lock-n-key progression. The Aliens universe proved to be an ideal candidate for the treatment, rich in weapons, gear, and enemy lore. Metroid always felt a little more real to me than most platforming games. We decided to add a sense of realism to our game by adding features more commonly found in tactical titles: Slower movement, limited ammo, magazine changes, taking cover, blind fire. I always appreciated the tempo of the Metroid games and thought the same approach could work well here.

Exploring was also a big part of the MetroidVania experience and we tried to provide that same feeling by really making a maze out of the guts of the Sulaco. It’s hard to look at the in-game map and not be reminded of the maps in Super Metroid.

WayForward discusses design, story and Aliens!

As part of an ongoing series, we are very honored to post the first Developer Diary from the good folks at WayForward, creators of the upcoming Aliens: Infestation. The first entry discusses the team at WayForward and their general philosophy, while offering insight into the Aliens world that they are building into. These developer diaries are shared between the SEGA blogs (you are here!) and the Gearbox community blog at Gearboxity.com. We hope you enjoy the first entry!

Who is WayForward and What is Their Design Philosophy for Aliens: Infestation?

Adam Tierney of WayForward (Director):
Every now and then, we get an opportunity to work on a brand so ingrained in our youth, that shaped us so deeply as storytellers and game designers, that it is (quite literally, sometimes) a dream come true. For many of the people at our company, that game was Contra 4 on Nintendo DS. Reigniting the Contra series was an incredible opportunity that combined our company’s love of classic gameplay mechanics and beautiful character animation, with a brand that many of us grew up loving. We had a blast making that game, and the fan response was incredible.

But for me personally, Aliens is a step beyond that. James Cameron’s 1986 movie is arguably (and I WILL argue this) the greatest action film ever made, and holds up remarkably well to this day. Not just because of the horror (which is there) and the action (BOY is it there), but because of the incredible characters and world Cameron wove together. Everything felt like it extended beyond the boundaries of those two hours we saw.

So when we got the call from Sega and Gearbox about making a 2D pixel DS game based on Aliens, needless to say we were pretty ecstatic. And when I say based on Aliens, I mean BASED ON ALIENS. This isn’t just an action title that happens to feature Xenomorphs. This is a game firmly set in the world and events established by James Cameron, and Ridley Scott before him. It’s a game that pays homage to both of those films, without recycling from either, and continues where they left off.

It also came along at the perfect time for WayForward. Having just finished Contra 4 on the Nintendo DS, we were in the perfect mindset for another 2D action platformer. Contra 4 had been very well received by both critics and fans for its retro feel and tough-as-nails gameplay. But at the same time, Contra is a very reactionary series: run, something appears, kill it before it kills you. There are few subtleties in a world of shirtless mercenaries. And while the two brands certainly share the same intense action, we knew creating a game based on Aliens would require a deeper connection between the characters and their world.

So we took a long, hard look at what worked so well in the James Cameron film. And we found that it all essentially boils down to two things: love and loss. James Cameron’s recipe for success was to write the most endearing, badass, memorable action heroes ever, and then kill them off one by one. Love and loss, that’s what the film was built on, beyond all the fantastic action and inventive sci-fi visuals.

We realized a true Aliens game would only work if players got as invested in our characters as we were in Hicks, Vasquez, Apone, Bishop…yes, even Hudson. We had to make players love everything about our Marines: their weapons, their abilities, their appearance, their personalities, even their humor. So that when they died (and we’re talking real, permanent death), it actually meant something. That’s a pretty tall order for a game where the characters are only 40 pixels tall.

So right from the start, it was apparent that the heart of the game rested with our troops. And once we figured that out, we knew we were on the track to creating a really unique experience for players.

A 2D side scroller, lock and key style, Aliens action game that you cannot miss - check out what folks have been saying about Aliens Infestation!

Aliens Infestation is coming soon, launching in Europe on September 30th and in North America on October 11th. The game has been getting all kinds of praise from folks who get their hands on the game and today we have a trailer to show it off.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The first outing is a bit action packed, but wait there’s more … Aliens Infestation is a classic lock and key style game, some might call Metroidvania. Crafted by WayForward, one of the top 2D developers, you know it’s going to be a good one. Don’t just take my word for it, we had some recent coverage from both Comic-con and Penny Arcade Expo that you should read:

1up.com enjoyed their hands on and had this to say:

It doesn’t happen very often, but every once in a while I come across a game that seems so similar to what I’d design for myself if I had the time and talent that it’s almost unnerving. Sega’s Aliens: Infestation is one such game. In fact, it hits pretty much all the sweet spots I look for in an action game.

Gamefront enjoyed Infestation and created a list of seven reasons why you should pick this game up!

Despite its humble DS home, Infestation does all it can to be as authentic an Aliens experience as possible. From sound effects to visual design, WayForward has done an impressive job of making Infestation look, sound and feel like a Xenomorph-flavored game. You’ll fire pulse rifles, weld doors, use flamethrowers to burn through obstacles, and drop flares to mark positions.

Destructoid awarded Aliens Infestation one of it’s top games of the PAX 2011 show, an award only 9 others received.

I absolutely loved what I got to play of the game and I’m very much looking forward to playing more. The beautiful sprite-based animations, comic-book personality, surprising atmosphere and panic-inducing challenge sets the scene for what might be one of the best Aliens games ever made. I can’t wait to get my hands on more!

Lastly 4PlayerPodcast wrote up a preview that had us all laughing, even getting a spot on our wall of awesome, here’s a tease:

To put it simply, Aliens: Infestation plays like an amalgamation of Metroid and Shadow Complex, expect transpose Metroids and soliders with Xenomorphs. It has everything you would expect from a Metroid experience; the large non-linear explorable map, the upgrading of weapons to allow access to previously inaccessible areas, and all the atmosphere and tension we have come to expect from an Aliens experience.

Press saw it, and press loved it - read impressions from the show floor!

E3 is now officially over! Officially now that we’re in the office and the E3 smell has been washed out of our clothing and life for another year. With the return to the office and a steady connection to the outside world, we can do a bit of a round up on all things Aliens: Colonial Marines! As noted in our E3 Show blog, the Aliens: Colonial Marines booth was decked out and themed to the Aliens universe with a theater, live Colonial Marines (see above!) and even holograms of the Aliens on the sides. While the outside looked cool, inside was the only place to view the demo of the upcoming SEGA and Gearbox title. The demo ran for about 30 minutes and we had folks queued up all day long to get in and get a chance to see it; when they got out, they were excited for the upcoming game!

There’s certainly a lot of interest in the title, so I didn’t list everything, just the lengthier articles that had a different perspectives or notable moments that they could catch from the presentation. I know that there is much more on the way as far as impressions, so keep your eyes open for more links and articles from the E3 show floor!

Impressions & Previews

MTV Multiplayer Blog has impressions up from the preview, read it here!

“Gearbox Software has been developing “Colonial Marines” for years now, but they finally took the wraps off the game at this year’s E3. Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox, is referring to this game as the “true sequel to ‘Aliens.’

The Wall Street Journal’s Blog, Speakeasy, had a chance to check out the game, check their preview here

Fans will be happy that the first-person shooter has all of the familiar elements from the movies, including pulse rifles with over/under grenade launchers, flamethrowers, power loaders and acid alien blood that will do you serious damage if you get into a “close encounter.” The designers have even incorporated the sentry gun robots from the director’s cut of “Aliens.”

Ars Technica has a very in depth article about the demo, including a quote that I’ve listed below – be sure to read the full article here.

I caught up with Gearbox’s Minister of Art—his actual job title—after the event, and asked about the danger of dealing with a property so many people love, one that has been somewhat abused in the past few years. “There were a few figures that were made when the movie came out, like a xenomorph that’s a praying mantis, and we have them tacked on our wall at the office to remind us what mistakes to avoid,” he told Ars. He said that everyone on the team is a fan of the franchise, and they have a strong sense of how to respect it without crossing any lines.

Video Game Writers posted their impressions, you can read them here.

Before beginning the live gameplay presentation, Pitchford joked that the game industry has been ripping off ideas from Aliens for years, and it was awesome to finally do it officially.

Examiner.com has lengthy impressions up as well, you can view the full article here.

Using a shotgun and later a pulse rifle the demo showed that even with great firepower the marines are at a huge disadvantage. The battle moved from the blast damaged observation area complerte with the ruined atmosphere processor in the distance.

VideoGamer.com has an excellent write up that covers off so much, you can tell they are big fans of the movies and certainly anticipating the release of Colonial Marines. Read their full writeup here.

There’ll always be at least one ally to hand, however, as drop in/drop out co-op play is available at all times, for a maximum of four participants. Perhaps this shouldn’t be a surprise given the success of Borderlands, but it’s certainly excellent news all the same.

Kotaku has a long preview up, peppered with details from the demo and their interviews – a great summary and overall read!

The position beyond saving, Winter and his pal run back upstairs where they see aliens streaming into the room through vents in the ceilings and walls. The aliens drop to the floor, jump over crates, bound toward you. The lights go out, in the silence and the black you can hear the motion tracking beeps of an approaching horde.

Gamespot has a write up of their impressions of the demo, read it all here…

The main character whipped out his handheld radar scanner and soon found several blips dashing toward the unit from the west. Naturally, the creatures were the titular Xenomorph aliens. One of them darted through the broken airshafts, wiggled out the other end, and snatched up an unlucky marine. It was time for our protagonist to get out of this sticky situation fast.

Finally Joystiq has a preview up of the demo presentation that also has a ton of detail, don’t miss out on the full article!

Gearbox told us there are other throwbacks for fans, like seeing Bishop’s torn legs in the USS Sulaco hanger bay, checking out the vent where Vasquez martyred herself, and seeing Newt’s doll head. But the game isn’t all throwback; in order to deliver a compelling narrative of its own, Gearbox received some early help from Bradley Thompson and David Weddle of Battlestar Galactica fame to augment its in-house writing talent.

Please Hold Your Questions until the End

Previews from press are one thing, and questions to the Gearbox developers are yet another – while the folks at E3 had a chance to get in and see the game, we have an in at Gearbox to get your questions answered! Take a look at the previews and let us know if you have any questions about the game in the comments below.

3 New Screens and shots from the E3 floor!

It’s finally here! Day one of the E3 show, ready to rock and show off one of the most anticipated SEGA titles in recent years – Aliens: Colonial Marines! As you’ve seen from the Booth photos, the SEGA E3 space is amazing and quite a site to behold. Colonial Marines right in front grabbing your attention when you first arrive at the booth.

What are we showing? Glad you asked! As you can see from the photos, we have an incredible theater showing off the game with a demo from the Gearbox team. The theater itself is really cool with lots to look at from the outside before you get in to see the game in action. Right off you can see our real life Colonial Marines manning the floor and keeping people in check. We also have a very cool 3D Alien images that unfortunately do not come out very well in photo form – we’ll see if we can get a bit of video to show them off, because they look pretty slick.

Inside, visitors are treated with a full gameplay demo of Colonial Marines and a chance to meet the Gearbox team. There’s a lot to see, but unfortunately we can’t show you any images or videos – the only way to get a glimpse of the game in action is right on the E3 Floor! The lucky few who get in to see the game also walk out with an Aliens: Colonial Marines shirt that fans may recognize from the Aliens movie (slight modification to have our line art match the game though!).

With that in mind, we want your questions for the Gearbox team! By now, previews and impressions should be flooding the web and we want to take your questions straight to the source. Post in the comments below!

Not to leave you entirely empty handed, we have 3 new screens of the game! Be sure to click in and see them in their full resolution on our Flickr page!

Press Release

SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. today announced that the highly-anticipated first-person shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines™, will be launching in spring 2012 on PC, PlayStation3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. In partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and developed by critically acclaimed studio Gearbox Software, Aliens: Colonial Marines will bring new levels of bone-chilling suspense and adrenaline-filled action to the renowned franchise. The game pits players against the universe’s ultimate alien killing machines, the Xenomorphs, in claustrophobic environments guaranteed to produce blood curdling thrills that the movie is renowned for. A first look of the game is presented in the South Hall at SEGA’s booth #2023, at this week’s E3 in Los Angeles.

“To Gearbox Software and its peers throughout the industry, ALIENS is one of the most influential science fiction properties of all time,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “Aliens: Colonial Marines, designed as an interactive successor to the landmark films from Twentieth Century Fox, is a dream project about which our studio is deeply committed and passionate.”

“Aliens: Colonial Marines will be THE definitive ALIENS gaming experience,” said Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA Europe and SEGA of America. “Gearbox Software are doing a brilliant job translating the thrill and horror that ALIENS stands for into an action-packed shooter experience with co-operative gameplay at its core.”

Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President of New Media for Fox Consumer Products added, “It’s no easy task to take on one of the most influential films of all-time, but SEGA and Gearbox are not going to disappoint. This game will be a must-have for fans of the ALIENS franchise and gamers around the globe.”

Aliens: Colonial Marines begins with an ostensibly abandoned ship, the U.S.S. Sulaco, recovered in orbit around LV-426. Players lead a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines as they board the deserted craft to uncover the fate of the crew. They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe. Aliens: Colonial Marines features authentic environments, such as the surface of LV-426 and Hadley’s Hope, weapons inspired by the film series and is designed to provide an exhilarating and engaging new chapter in the Aliens universe.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will be available spring 2012 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The game is also on display in the South Hall at SEGA’s booth #2032, at this week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to go check out the WonderCon comic book convention here in San Francisco. Basically it is a huge event held annually for the last 18 years to celebrate comics, sci fi, and movies. This year was WonderCon’s fifth year at the famed Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco after its early reign across the bay in Oakland.

Convention-goers from all over the globe arrived in droves to check out all the cool merchandise, artists, costume, and the huge hype surrounding the preview of the new X-Files movie and appearances by David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Chris Carter, and Frank Spotnitz. In addition to the X-Files preview, attendees could also expect appearances by Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway promoting the new Get Smart feature, a first look at the new Street Fighter 4 game, and a endless bundle of other movie and comic related insider panels.

I arrived around 11:00 AM with camera in tow to be greeted by a totally massive line wrapping out the front door and out to the street. Luckily for me I had pre-purchased my ticket and just needed to hop in the speed line to obtain my badge and get the train a-rolling.

Once I walked into the main convention center, I was pretty overwhelmed by where to start my journey. I had a few definites on my agenda, but with about 8,000,000 of my my closest friends in attendance, I would have to wade through a sea of people to even begin to find some of the unexpected surprises that would await me below.

I gave my buddy ChillAura a call as he had just shown up as well, and we rendezvoused near the Artists’ Alley to check out some of the premier comic and sculpture artists’ work. We got the chance to scope out Jim Lee (one of my favorite X-Men artists), Tim Sale (Grendel, Hulk Gray), Mark Brooks (Arana, Marvel) and a ton of other great pencil and ink guys among the company of artists’ booths positioned in the hall’s northeast corner.

Chill and I were pretty stoked on all the Artists’ Alley stuff, but we had other things on our agenda that we had to take care of, so we headed to the far west end of the hall to check out the merchandisers, to see what new gear we could pick up. There was actually one ominously towering T-shirt vendor that caught our eye (along with the eyes of anyone not legally blind) and we made our way through the sea of fans and costumed heroes and villains to see what kind of deals we could score. Chill was able to add to and replenish his impressive collection of shirts, but one shirt in particular caught my eye — and it was on sale to boot!

Alright, now that we had dropped some cash and had some tangibles to bring home with us, it was time to take in some of the other sights. Not much effort was needed to be expended on our end, luckily, as the barrage of visuals and costumes was upon us whether we liked it or not. It just so happened I ran into Rex Adams, member of the USCM, a really cool group of guys dedicated to Aliens-inspired replica armor, weapons, and memorabilia that I’ve had the pleasure to get to get to know and meet recently. It looked like Rex had already caught the attention of a small group of people blown away by the detail of his USCM armor, pulse rifle, and working motion tracker — I know I was!

Rex and I headed over to meet up with his fellow USCM buddy David Wong over at his Sci Fi Military booth. We got to talk about all their gear and the differences between the types of armors and ways the guys have built replica weaponry to be as accurate as possible to the characters and movies. It’s amazingly impressive and I look forward to getting my chance to put together my own project. Rex also shared with me some info on this great Aliens movie project he and some of the guys have been working on called Drop Zone Copernicus, which judging from the trailer they have on their site and the passion behind its production looks to be pretty amazing once it is done. I was happy to get to share some of the work being done on the upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines game here. They seemed really excited about the game and its direction, which was great, because I know these gusy are harsh critics when it comes to Aliens, the Colonial Marines and video games.

I parted ways with Rex and David to try and get over to the main hall, where they would be premiering the new X-Files trailer. Earlier in the day, the line for people trying to get front row was pretty incredible, so I had my fingers crossed that I would be able to get in quickly and find a reasonable seat. Luckily for me (seems I’m two-for-two on avoiding lines today) a friend had been camped out and had an extra seat next to her that would let me snag a great view. The first look at the X-Files movie didn’t tell a whole lot, but I think that the push behind this and the direction definitely sounds like fans who have been waiting for more X-Files will be pleased. The Q&A with David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Chris Carter, and Frank Spotnitz was actually pretty great as well. I was slightly taken aback with Gillian’s candor as her role as Dana Scully is so much different than her relaxed and sarcastic presentation I saw during the Q&A.

A good hour or so had now gone by and I was pretty much starving — too much excitement on an empty stomach can be hazardous to your convention-going health, so Chill and I booked it across the street through the (now pouring) rain to grab some BBQ at the Metreon food court. After reliving some of our adventures for the day, we decided to head back over for one last pass through to make sure we didn’t miss anything and snag some more pictures of some of the cool costumes we saw there.

During our quest to find the coolest and most elaborate costumes, I stumbled upon a booth that had some pretty well-done Marvel masks. Unfortunately I didn’t see anyone actually dressed up as Dr. Doom or Iron Man, but word on the street was there were a few Marvel costumes I missed. I guess I will have to head to ComiCon in San Diego this year (which I hear has an even larger percentage of costumed fans) and bring my own motion tracker to seek them out.

So with the rain letting up, Chill and I decided it was time to split. Before we left, however, I had to find this guy I had heard about earlier from the USCM guys, who was rocking an Aliens T-Shirt with a real 3-D chestburster coming out of it. I had nearly given up with my anxiety levels rising with the tide of the crowd, but just as I hit the last booth before the door I found him! How cool is this?

For more pictures of the event, check out my Flickr set here. If anyone else was at WonderCon, what cool stuff did you see? Miss anything on your ‘must see’ list of things to check out, or find any really good merch scores? Epic.
