Behind the Scenes of Game Development – Meet a SEGA Team!

Game development can be a nebulous endeavor, and it’s not often you get a comprehensive look at what’s going on behind the scenes. As part of an interview series, we had the pleasure of talking to many members of the Kingdom Conquest II Team, both at SEGA’s development studio in Japan, and here at our offices in San Francisco.

There’s a lot of interesting stuff in these conversations, from inspirational stories to amusing anecdotes, and we thought it would be convenient to collect all the interviews in one place, so that you can easily read the thoughts of those behind a modern SEGA game. While this by no means represents everyone who worked on Kingdom Conquest II here at SEGA, it’s a large part of the team that devotes most of their time to this title.

Kingdom Conquest II Interview Archive

We hope you enjoy these articles, which covers all the different disciplines involved in developing and publishing a global game. While they tend to be more specific to Kingdom Conquest II, we are confident you’ll find them interesting regardless of whether you’ve played or not!

Kingdom Conquest II – Interview with “Tetsuo” Hisaka

In gaming companies, people tend to take on a lot of different roles. “Tetsuo” Hisaka, who works over at the SEGA of Japan offices, is one of those people. He wears many hats, from translator, to Customer Support Director, to go-between for SEGA of America and SEGA of Japan. As such, he’s been exposed to many different parts of SEGA, and has a lot of interesting experience to share. Let’s get started!

Interview Preview

1. How did you come to work in the Video Game industry and for SEGA? Was it always a dream for you, or was it unexpected?
I was initially working as a freelance translator, but SEGA was seeking someone with strong communication skills, and can fluently switch between Japanese and English. The job description also matched what I wanted to do, so I took the plunge into the Video Game industry. Working for a game company is a dream that a lot of kids have when growing up in Japan, and I was that lucky guy who ended up fulfilling it.

6. Do you have any funny stories about your time here at SEGA?

Oh yeah, we’re all hard workers, but we love to goof around on occasion to let off some steam.

Just last week…

Interview with Kingdom Conquest II’s Yoshiharu “Mr. KC” Kayanuma

This interview is a fun one! We have the pleasure of asking Kingdom Conquest II’s Yoshiharu “Mr. KC” Kayanuma some questions. If you’re not familiar with him, Mr. KC is our resident Kingdom Conquest II Arena expert, and he writes analyses in the Arena reports that follow each Arena Event (such as the latest MWC 2013 Preliminary Tournament Arena Report). He knows all about the stats in Arenas, is very knowledgeable about the game, and has agreed to give us some insight into his knowledge well!

Interview Preview

1. Let’s start with the basics… How did you get involved in the video game industry and working at SEGA?
I was originally a director for a different game company. After I gained some experience, I joined SEGA as a Project Manager.

2. Did your unique Kingdom Conquest persona (Mr. KC) exist prior to 2011? We assume you came into existence when the original Kingdom Conquest was launched.
I gave myself this name when the Arena feature was introduced for Kingdom Conquest II, and wanted to give players more ways to enjoy the game.

3. How did you come to be so knowledgeable about Kingdom Conquest, and particularly PvP in Arena?
The development team has a “Unit Simulator” on hand. The team uses this tool to simulate ideal unit compositions, or recreate units that are being used in top tier Arena battles. Whenever a new monster or commander is released, I always go directly to the Unit Simulator to do some research.

4. What has your experience in writing for the Arena Reports been like? Have you learned anything interesting?

Head to the Kingdom Conquest 2 forums to read his answer and the full interview!

You’ll never need to feel like you’re racing alone with integrated Facebook and Game Center functionality that lets you see your friends’ profile pictures zoom past you on the track. Last but not least, if you want a new reason to play, iOS 7 & Android controller support transforms your racing experience into something different for mobile gaming.
