Attention NiGHTS into dreams… fans! We’ve released a patch for the game on XBLA and PSN with two very important updates. First, we’ve adjusted the controls to allow analog input in 24 directions, which will give you greater control. Second, we’ve changed the drill-dash speed so it aligns with the Saturn version of the game.
Make sure you get the update, and keep enjoying the game!

It’s a good day for fans of classic SEGA.

Available now for PlayStation Network — and in just a few days, on October 5th, for Xbox Live Arcade — are two well-loved classics, remastered in HD: NiGHTS Into Dreams… and Sonic Adventure 2!

Both NiGHTS and Sonic Adventure 2 are priced at $9.99/£6.49/€7.99 on PlayStation Network and 800 MSP on the Xbox 360. The games have been remastered in HD and are stocked with unique achievements.

Sonic Adventure 2 also offers players the ability to grab the “Battle Mode” downloadable content for an additional $3.00/£1.99/€2.49/AU$4.25/240 Microsoft Points this Friday, adding in maps and characters from the the Gamecube re-release of the game. Meanwhile, players who buy a copy of NiGHTS into Dreams… will receive free access to the Christmas NiGHTS bonus content, containing levels previously only available through special promotions and SEGA Saturn holiday bundles.

Additionally, anyone who buys a copy of either game on the PlayStation Network will receive a free, exclusive NiGHTS or Sonic Adventure 2 theme for their PlayStation 3.

Last bit of official notice before I pontificate for a bit about each game: both games will also be coming to PC digital download in the coming months, so if you’re a PC gamer (as I am) then you’re in luck — stay tuned for more info!

Sonic Swan Song

As a fan who grew up with Sega in the 1990s (okay, and the 80s) it’s definitely a kick and a trip to see these two games arrive on these platforms on the same day.

Sonic Adventure 2 released in 2001 for the Dreamcast — it was the last and the biggest Sonic game on that system. Introducing Shadow the Hedgehog and combining both the arcade thrills of old-school Sonic with the sprawling adventure made possible by new hardware, Sonic Adventure 2 was a wonderful swan song for a beloved system. Featuring an epic plot and six playable characters — including the he’s-so-bad-but-ladies-couldn’t-you-make-him-change Shadow the Hedgehog, the game was definitely memorable.

And yet it was nearly eclipsed by another feature within the game — to this day we get letters from fans about Chao Gardens, the delightfully ahead-of-its-time ‘battle’ feature that allowed you to raise, evolve, and battle for supremacy with the adorable little Chao. At the recent Penny Arcade Expo I had fans walk up and tell me that they still had their Dreamcast VMU, and still had their Chao saved to it.

Given the game’s critical success and lasting popularity with fans, it was also probably inevitable that it would end up with HD remastering as a digital release.

Dream a Little Dream

Maybe less inevitable was the (ahem) journey that NiGHTS took to get here. The pure definition of a cult classic, NiGHTS was released on the SEGA Saturn in 1996. Part of the middle-child “fifth generation” of consoles (along with the Nintendo 64 and the original PlayStation) released in the 90s, some truly unique and awesome games showed up for the Saturn, as games began for the first time to experiment with transitioning from 2D platformers to 3D spaces.

NiGHTS was and remains unlike anything else that’s been released. Partly, this is the still-dazzling aerial navigation through 3D space and the technical achievement of smoothly pulling off so much wizardly. But technically impressive achievements can always be surpassed and what’s given NiGHTS lasting appeal is that it has a unique and haunting story — there is an ethereal feel of other-worldliness to the game. The game follows the nocturnal journeys in the dream realm of its child protagonists, who use the form of the eponymous purple jester as a sort of avatar to explore the dreamscape and take back stolen dream aspects.

It’s a mythology-heavy and even existential plot that deals with the slippery nature of identity and how our dreams inform our reality and vice-versa — and if that seems kind of heavy for a wild-looking racing/adventure game bursting with color where you play as a magical purple-clad jester, tell that to the legion of fans who are to this day inspired by NiGHTS to create music and artwork. Since arriving at SEGA five years ago I have learned that NiGHTS fans are one of the most tirelessly devoted and best organized groups of I’ve ever encountered. They’ve been carrying the torch for this game for sixteen years, and it’s — ahh, I’ll just go ahead and say it, please forgive me — a dream come true to release this.

If it seems like I’m getting all emotional here, well … games like the enigmatic NiGHTS and the rollicking and ambitious Sonic Adventure 2 are why I love games in the first place, and it’s my pleasure to re-introduce them to our old fans, and introduce them for the first time to new fans.

One of the questions we get asked most often lately is when the HD remakes of both NiGHTS into dreams… and Sonic Adventure 2 will be coming out. Today, I have an answer! Both games will be available for digital download this October.

On the PlayStation Network, NiGHTS and Sonic Adventure 2 will be available on October 2 for $9.99 USD, and available October 5 for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE  Arcade for the Xbox 360.

Sonic fans will also be able to enhance their Sonic Adventure 2 experience with Battle Mode DLC for an additional $3.00 / 240 Microsoft Points. Battle Mode includes more maps and characters from the beloved Gamecube version of the title, including everyone’s favorite mode: Chao Karate.

As an added bonus for NiGHTS into dreams…, players who buy the title will receive free access to the dreams from the original 1996 holiday-themed expansion, Christmas NiGHTS - previously only available through a Saturn holiday bundle or from special game and magazine promotions.

The Penny Arcade Expo is nearly here! In a week’s time we’ll be in sunny Seattle showing off a ton of SEGA games and meeting the fans of our products. We’ve already detailed the games that are available for play on the show floor and today we show you the goods! Official Rules

There is no purchase necessary to enter or to win.

1) Promotion Description: Sega of America, Inc. (“Sponsor”) is offering the ”Share Your Dreams Contest” (the “Promotion”) and will determine winners based on judging all eligible entries against the criteria established in these Official Rules. The Promotion begins at 9:00:00 AM US Pacific Time (“PT”) on August 13, 2012 and the deadline for submission of entries is 10:00:00 AM PT on August 26, 2012 (“Submission Entry Period”).

2) Eligibility: Promotion is open to all legal residents of the fifty (50) United States, the District of Columbia (excluding Puerto Rico) and Canada (excluding Quebec), who are 13 years of age or older at the time of entry (“Entrants”). Employees, officers and directors of the Sponsor, its parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, divisions, advertising, promotional, fulfillment and marketing agencies (collectively “Promotion Entities”), their immediate families (parent, child, sibling & spouse) and persons living in the same households of such individuals (whether related or not), are not eligible to participate in the Promotion. 3) Creating your Essay Submission:  Prepare an essay of no more than five hundred (500) words on the topic of “What has been your most significant dream and why?” (your “Essay Submission”). Your Essay Submission must: (a) be prepared in English and submitted as a word processed document; (b) consist of no more than five hundred (500) words; (c) be totally original, created by you, cannot be previously published or appear anywhere else and CANNOT contain any third party copyrighted material or otherwise infringe on the intellectual property or other rights of a third party; (d) be suitable for general audiences (i.e., may not be obscene or indecent, including but not limited to references to nudity, pornography, profanity or gratuitous violence); (e) not contain defamatory statements (including, but not limited to, words or thoughts that are widely considered offensive to individuals of a certain race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or socioeconomic group); (f) not include threats to any person, place, business, group or nation; and (g) not invade privacy or other rights of any person, firm or entity, and it must not in any other way violate any law or regulation.

4) How to enter your Essay Submission: Send an e-mail to communityteam@sega.com with “Share Your Dreams Contest” in the subject line.  Attach your Essay Submission as a Word Document to the e-mail. In the body of the e-mail include the following informational points (your “Entry”):

• Your first and last name
• Your age
• Your date of birth
• Your state/province
• Your e-mail address
• Your telephone number including area code
• The title/reference for your Essay Submission

There is no limit to the number of different times you can enter, however, each Essay Submission must be new and completely different from any previous Entry you have submitted and each must be submitted as a separate e-mail Entry. There is a limit of one (1) prize per person. By entering, you agree that you are assigning all ownership and usage rights to your Essay Submission to Sponsor in exchange for no compensation of any kind.

5) Judging and Winner Determination:  Entries will be judged by a panel of marketers from Sponsor (“Judging Panel”) and will be judged and weighted equally on the following points:  (a) originality; (b) quality of writing; and (c) demonstrated effort in the preparation of the Essay Submission. The Judging Panel will determine twenty (20) winners.  At Sponsor’s sole discretion, if an inadequate number of entries or entries of inadequate quality are received, Sponsor reserves the right NOT to determine any entries as winners or to determine any number of winners fewer than twenty (20).  The decisions of the Judging Panel in all matters relating to this Promotion are final. Judging will be completed on or about September 6, 2012.

6) Prizes: Each of the twenty (20) winners will receive one (1) NiGHTS into dreams… pillowcase, Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”) fifteen USD ($15). There are a total of twenty (20) prizes available with a total ARV of three hundred USD ($300).

7) Prize Awarding – Potential winners will be contacted within one (1) business day of the conclusion of judging by the e-mail address and/or phone number associated with their Entry (“Prize Notification”) and asked to confirm prize acceptance and provide a mailing address for the purposes of prize fulfillment. If a potential winner is under the age of eighteen (18) his/her parent or legal guardian will be required to accept the prize on his/her behalf. Non-compliance with any of these requirements may result in disqualification and forfeiture of the prize. Return of Prize Notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and forfeiture of the prize. Acceptance of a prize constitutes permission for Sponsor to use winner’s name and likeness for advertising and promotional purposes as Sponsor so determines without notice or further compensation, except where prohibited by law. Prize recipient shall not be permitted to (a) replace his/her designated prize with another prize or item, (b) transfer or assign his/her designated prize to another person, or (c) substitute any prize or prize component for cash. In the event of unavailability, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value. All federal, state, local, and other taxes on prizes, including any applicable import taxes on prizes, are the sole responsibility of the person accepting the prize.

8 ) General:  If, during any period of the Promotion, for reasons beyond the Sponsor’s control (including, but not limited to, tampering or computer virus infection), the Promotion is not capable of running as originally planned, the Sponsor, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to cancel or modify the Promotion, without liability and to the extent feasible, will determine winners among entries received prior to cancellation or modification. Sponsor is not responsible for Internet, computer hardware and software, phone, and other technical errors, malfunctions, and delays. Entries that are incomplete, inaccurate, irregular, or otherwise not in compliance with these Official Rules, are void. All Entrants agree to comply fully with each provision in these Official Rules. Any person attempting to defraud or in any way tamper with this Promotion and any person who does not comply with these Official Rules will be ineligible and may be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

If Sponsor is duly notified that any element of an Entrant’s Essay Submission infringes upon the rights of another person and/or receives a legally valid request to remove the affected Essay Submission because of such infringement, such Essay Submission may be removed and disqualified from the Promotion, as Sponsor may determine in its sole discretion. Further, no Entrant will be named a winner unless Sponsor determines, in its sole and absolute discretion, that such Entrant’s Essay Submission has been or can be sufficiently cleared for legal purposes and such Entrant has complied with the terms of these Official Rules.

Past experience has shown a promotion such as this one may generate similar submissions which closely resemble concepts and ideas developed by the Promotion Entities whether before, during or after the Promotion. Entrants may see a presentation that seemingly incorporates an idea or concept or includes materials similar to that contained in their entry (e.g., Essay Submission). Any similarity may be purely coincidental and is always unavoidable in light of the volume of ideas that the Promotion Entities routinely consider in the course of their content development. Winner will be selected by the panel of judges approximately two (2) weeks after the ending date of each Promotion Period and no later than September 7^th 2012. Potential winners will be contacted within two (2) business days of the decisions being made by the judging panel by the e-mail address associated with their Registered User account to confirm prize acceptance and determine a mailing address for the prize. Potential winners will have five (5) business days to respond to the prize notification e-mail with the requested information. Failure to respond within this time frame or without the requested information will result in disqualification, forfeiture of the prize and the selection of an alternate winner. Return of prize notification e-mail as undeliverable will result in disqualification, forfeiture of the prize and the selection of an alternate winner.

Acceptance of a prize constitutes permission for Sponsor to use winner’s name and likeness for advertising and promotional purposes as Sponsor so determines without notice or further compensation, except where prohibited by law. Prize recipient shall not be permitted to (a) replace his/her designated prize with another prize or item, (b) transfer or assign his/her designated prize to another person, or (c) substitute any prize or prize component for cash. In the event of unavailability, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value. All cash prizes will be issued in GBP Pound Sterling via cheque or bank transfer. ANY AND ALL TAX LIABILITY RESULTING FROM A WINNER’S RECEIPT OF THE PRIZE IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WINNER.

(i) Sponsor reserves the right to discontinue this Promotion at any time and without notice following the conclusion and complete fulfilment of all prizes associated with any given (and then current) Promotion. In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of the person submitting the winning entry, the prize will be awarded to the authorised account holder of the submitted Internet e-mail address regardless of the individual who submitted the entry. The authorised account holder is the natural person who is assigned to the e-mail address by an Internet Service Provider or other organisation that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses or the domain names associated with e-mail addresses. Sponsor reserves the right to void entries, which in its sole determination, are irregular, incomplete, inaccurate, do not comply with these official rules or have been generated with abusive and/or duplicitous intent including but not limited to false or multiple e-mail addresses.

(ii) By entering, you (a) agree to comply with and be bound by the official rules and the decisions of the Sponsor which are final and binding in all respects; (b) agree to release Sponsor and its employees and agents from any and all liability, loss, damage or injury resulting from participation in this Promotion or from the awarding, receipt, possession use and/or misuse of any prize; (c) acknowledge that Sponsor, and its employees and agents have neither made nor are in any manner responsible or liable for any warranty, representation, or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, relative to any prize including, but not limited to, its quality, mechanical condition or fitness for a particular purpose; (d) consent to use of your name, photograph and/or likeness, written or oral statements, biographical information and voice for advertising and promotional purposes in all media worldwide and in perpetuity without additional compensation, unless prohibited by law; [(e) represent and warrant that your Submission is wholly original, not previously published, and does not incorporate or include anything that is owned by any third party or would require the consent of any third party and your Entry does not violate any copyright, trademark, publicity right, privacy right or any other right of any third party; (f) automatically grant to Sponsor a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable license to use, reproduce, create derivative works from, modify, publish, edit, translate, distribute and display your Submission; (g) agree that upon selection as a winner of any prize, you agree that your Submission shall legally be considered a "work made for hire," with all rights therein, including, without limitation, the exclusive copyright, transferred to and being the property of Sponsor; (h) in the event your Submission is considered not to be a "work made for hire," you irrevocably assign to Sponsor, all right, title, and interest in and to your Submission (including, without limitation, the copyright) in any and all media whether now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, anywhere in the world, with the right to make any and all uses thereof, including, without limitation, for purposes of advertising or trade; and (i) agree that by entering your Submission, you grant to Sponsor the right to sell and otherwise distribute your Submission on any of its websites or in any of its products without any compensation. (iii)Without in any way limiting, expanding or amending the Terms of Service at http://www.sega.co.uk/legal/terms.php which Terms of Service policy shall remain in full force and effect, if Sponsor is duly notified that any element of an Entrant’s Submission infringes upon the rights of another person and/or receives a legally valid request to remove the affected Submission because of such infringement, such Submission may be removed and disqualified from the Promotion, as Sponsor may determine in its sole discretion. Further, no Entrant will be eligible to receive a prize unless Sponsor determines, in its sole and absolute discretion, that such Entrant’s Submission has been or can be sufficiently cleared for legal purposes and such Entrant has complied with the terms of these Official Rules.

(iv) Past experience has shown a promotion such as this one may generate similar submissions which closely resemble concepts and ideas developed by the Promotion Entities whether before, during or after the Promotion. Entrants may see a presentation that seemingly incorporates an idea or concept or includes materials similar to that contained in their entry (e.g., Submission). Any similarity may be purely coincidental and is always unavoidable in light of the volume of ideas that the Promotion Entities routinely consider in the course of their content development. (vi) Sponsor is not responsible for any lost, late, delayed, misdirected, garbled, illegible, incorrect or inaccurate information or entries that are misdirected or misrouted as a result of interrupted or unavailable network connections or internet transmissions for any reason, or any failure of the website during the Promotion Period, or for any computer, phone, phone line hardware or software malfunction, failure or error of any kind, whether mechanical, human or electronic. Any attempt by an entrant to interfere with the operations of this Promotion is a violation of criminal and civil laws; Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such entrant to the fullest extent permitted by law. If, for any reason, any Promotion is not capable of running as planned, including, without limitation, infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorised intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsor which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Promotion, Sponsor reserves the right at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Promotion and select winners in a random drawing from among all eligible entries received prior to the cancellation. We’re excited to announce a line-up of nine playable games, including one unannounced game, for this year’s Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle. Alongside our upcoming blockbuster franchise titles Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Aliens: Colonial Marines, we are also showing off several digital titles, including Double Fine’s The Cave and Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit by indie developer Arkedo Studios. Phantasy Star Online 2, the popular multi-player online role playing game, which launched to more than 730,000 players in less than one month in Japan, will be making its Western debut at the show. Fans of the iconic blue hedgehog will also get to play the recently-announced HD version of Sonic Adventure 2.

On Tuesday, we posted this image to our SEGA Facebook and Twitter. While many people didn’t know what it was, there were also fans who knew immediately. It’s NiGHTS.

Today is a day that many NiGHTS fans have been waiting for. We’re so excited to announce that an HD remake of the fan-favorite flying platformer, NiGHTS into dreams…, will be coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Windows PC Digital Download this fall. To prove this news isn’t a dream itself, check out the first official NiGHTS trailer!

“The SEGA Saturn offered many unique gaming experiences, and NiGHTS into dreams… stands out as one of the most recognizable titles that found a home on the system,” said Chris Olson, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA. “We’ve gotten a lot of requests about this game over the years, and are very happy to be able to give both former Saturn owners and new players a chance to play it in its most beautiful form to date this fall.”

Initially released for SEGA Saturn 16 years ago today, on July 5, 1996, NiGHTS into dreams… is one of the best-regarded games in SEGA history and a favorite of many fans thanks to its innovative 3D gameplay and multi-faceted level design. This new version will bring Nightopia to vivid life with improved HD graphics and a 16:9 aspect ratio, as well as added support for leaderboards, trophies, and achievements. It will also feature an optional Saturn Mode that will let players experience the game with the original graphics intact.
