Four New Game Gear Titles for the Nintendo 3DS eShopSEGA is proud to announce four new classic Game Gear titles are now available in the Nintendo 3DS eShop! The color (!!!) portable system from SEGA’s 90s past – the one that ate batteries like tater tots and had a TV Tuner, which was pretty awesome even if it ate even more batteries – has previously joined forces with the finely-crafted Nintendo portable system. We’re back with more, adding four of the games that helped define the Game Gear: Sonic the Hedgehog, Columns, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, and Shining Force: Sword of Hajya! If you’re a fan of Game Gear’s unique portable offerings, then we have more on the way in the near future — for now though, let’s plug in the car adapter and buckle in to the backseat for a trip down memory lane to look at these titles: Sonic the HedgehogAh yes, Sonic. We know about this game, right? Blue Hedgehog runs fast, collects rings, thwarts plans, frees animals encased in unfeeling metal, is charged with the mystical energies of special emeralds. Classic! Actually the Game Gear version is a slightly different spin on the original – it’s the same version as appeared on the SEGA Master System: half of the zones feature a different design than the 16-bit counterpart, and it has different level design and story elements. Notably, the game also featured original music from chiptune wizard Yuzo Koshiro – the same musician who created the amazing tracks for the Streets of Rage series and contributed fifteen original tracks to Shenmue. ColumnsColumns! Seriously though, Columns. Yes, there is a fine tradition of games where the player arranges falling things in a desperate bid to make them disappear. It’s as apt a metaphor for life itself as video games have devised. The twist in columns – have you guessed it? – is the frenetic arrangements are all vertical, a metaphor for the chaos of our waking lives, and/or a metaphor for spinning falling gems stuck to one another that vanish if you line them up just so. As is becoming a recurring theme here, Columns also had some fantastic music. Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean MachineLook, it was the 90s, and matching contortionist strings of goo-beans was just something that we did back then. It’s hard to explain if you weren’t there, but this game is a window into the culture of my people. Oh! Also it is basically a Puyo Puyo game, which is to say exactly a Puyo Puyo game, but remade with a Sonic theme, because again, it was the 90s, and that’s how we rolled. One neat thing about the Game Gear versions of Genesis titles is they often had something unique going for them – in this case, a “Puzzle Mode” that didn’t appear in its 16-bit cousin. Nineties! Yeah! Shining Force: The Sword of HajyaA rare gem from one of my personal favorite series – the original Shining Force games rank highly on my list of all-time favorites for their blend of tactical strategy and story-driven RPG. Sword of Hajya takes place some 20 years after the original Shining Force, give or take, and continues the story of Guardiana. A handful of characters from the original – including Luke, Ken, Lowe, and the magical egg-shaped squid-creature (???) Domingo – return in this Gamer Gear exclusive. To be honest, RPGs don’t always age well – they can be grindy and they can belong very much to their eras. Sometimes you take what you can get. But tactical RPGs and in particular the Shining Force series have always felt very much alive, and the blend of character progression, story, and tactical strategy still hold a primal appeal. I mean, I’m biased! But I like to think I’m biased for a reason, and those reasons say I am very excited to see this game (and all these games) show up for download on the 3DS. Stay tuned … there’s more on the way for the Nintendo 3DS!

Sonic Lost World Booth at E3The Sonic Lost World section of SEGA’s E3 booth is like a world unto itself. In the middle stands a 15 foot rotating Sonic statue, along with some display cases of Sonic merchandise from the past and present. The game is playable on Wii U and 3DS around the outside circle of this center. Around the outside of the circle are amazing color graphics of Sonic and the Deadly Six. On the other side of the circle is the Sonic Lost World logo and a smaller Sonic statue. This is a very popular place for attendees to get their photo taken. The display cases inside the booth have lots of great Sonic merchandise.

Sonic Lost World at E3!
Sonic Lost World is playable for the first time at E3 this week, and we’re really excited to show it off. To celebrate, we’ve got new screens for you, along with a brand new trailer for the 3DS version.
Sonic Lost World will be published on Nintendo platforms as part of the exclusive partnership recently announced between the two companies. Sonic Lost World puts Sonic up to the challenge as he faces his most powerful enemy to date – and this time there are six of them to conquer! Sonic Lost World will be available exclusively for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms later this year.
Dr. Eggman has harnessed the power of six menacing creatures collectively known as the Deadly Six, but when the Deadly Six rise up against their master, Sonic has to unite with his arch nemesis in order to take on the new enemies head-on. Using his dynamic new parkour moves and improved Color Powers, Sonic must run, jump and race through a variety of ever-changing terrains in order to defeat the Deadly Six. Alongside a single player adventure, the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of Sonic Lost World will feature a range of competitive multiplayer modes. In addition, each platform will also contain distinctive features that take advantage of the consoles’ unique capabilities. Exclusive Wii U Color Powers can be controlled with the Wii U GamePad by tilting, touching, aiming and more. The full game can also be played using only the GamePad screen and will feature a two player support mode. Sonic Lost World for the Nintendo 3DS is the first handheld Sonic game ever to feature fully realized 3D levels which include exclusive Special Stages and Color Powers unique to Nintendo 3DS.

SEGA’s Favorite Places in Los Angeles – The LA/E3 Foursquare ListHere at SEGA, we love to eat. We’ve even got a whole blog category dedicated to food. We travel a lot, and we’re all from different parts of the world. All of that adds up to us knowing some pretty spectacular places to eat, drink, and be merry. We launched our Foursquare account earlier this year, and we’ve loved adding our tips and seeing people using our recommendations to find great stuff. As many of us are veterans of E3 and/or Los Angeles, we’ve compiled all of our LA-based tips onto this handy Foursquare list. TL;DRGames at E3:
Please use the hashtag #SegaE3 when tweeting about our E3 stuff, or posting Instagram photos of our E3 stuff. We’re on Instagram! Our username is SEGA. We compiled a Foursquare list of awesome places to go in LA.

Sonic Generations of Skate RecapIt was a beautiful, not-too-hot, Saturday at the Clairemont Skate Park in San Diego, California as we gathered for Sonic Generations of Skate 2013. We were excited and proud to be part of the Clash at Clairemont and helping to raise money for Grind for Life, a charity that helps people battling with cancer. As the athletes checked in for the competition, we were happy to provide them gift bags to thank them for participating. We had some fantastic sponsors that helped us out with this — American Giant, New Era, Bazooka Candy, Skullcandy Sergie Ventura Kevin Staub Tony Hawk And of course, Sonic himself was there to cheer all the skaters on. After some warm up skating and some friendly handshakes, the competition was on. The skaters were divided into teams of three, each team having one person from each “generation” — in their 40s, 30s, and 20s or younger. The teams performed individual tricks and stunts, as well as group runs. For the second time in a row, the winning team was Tony Hawk, Andy MacDonald, and Mitchie Brusco. Sonic was happy to pose for photos with the winners and their Sonic Lost World trophies. To see more photos from this incredible charity event, go to our Flickr. But of course, there was one more thing we had to do before we left San Diego — and that’s slide down the half pipe. Once the event was over, Sonic Lost World brand managers Judy and Aaron (known to many of you as RubyEclipse) were brave enough to take a wild ride down the half pipe. You can see what happened on the Vine video. Thanks to everyone who came to the event, and we’ll see you next time!
