Spiral Knights: U.I. Overhaul and Birthday Celebration

Spiral Knights

Hail, Knights!

Preamble: In which news is delivered to our Knights, of improvements and a celebration!

Part I: In Which A Caketastrophe is Baked

Happy Birthday to Spiral Knights: it was two years ago that Knights first crash-landed on the planet Cradle! First and foremost, thank you to all our players for joining us in this adventure. We will be celebrating with a special birthday event that runs through April 16th.

Second, we have made cakes! But, oh dear. Something is wrong.

What’s that? Oh. Nothing is wrong! Everything is fine. We’re fine, how are you? There are no monstrous “Creep Cakes” of any kind. Please do proceed to the Haven town square at your earliest convenience, though, and meet Skylark’s Head Chef, Biscotti.

It’s not an emergency or anything but seriously, do head there post-haste?

Spiral Knights

The totally everything’s fine situation / celebration includes:

  • A Prestige Mission: ‘Total Caketastrophe’
  • Creep Cake nests can be found randomly throughout the clockworks
  • Earn Cake Slice Tokens
  • Special NPCs Biscotti, Maskwell, and Bulky can be found in the Haven town square…
  • Maskwell now trades Cake Helms and Anniversary Prize boxes for the cake corpses – er, slices
  • Bulky now sells confetti and Cake Slice tokens

(Please note, the Frosted Helm and Foiled Frosted Helm will expire on April 30th 2013, however the Prismatic Frosted Helm lasts forever!)

For a full list of prizes and odds of winning them in the Anniversary Prize Box, please check here.

Part II: Spectacular Optics

Spiral Knights

With age comes wisdom, and in this case, the ripe old age of two brings about a whole new User Interface! As you will no doubt notice immediately upon logging in, Spiral Knights has a new and – we hope you will feel – improved UI, overhauling the interface we have been using since Beta.

Here’s the major changes:

  • A visible character portrait
  • A new way of viewing health: health pips now change from red to silver and finally gold as more health is accrued. Additionally, a percentage health display is present.
  • A shield power meter under health.
  • A weapon selection ‘wheel’ that allows you to see the name and icon of your weapons.
  • A much more detailed mini map, featuring enemy locations, NPCs and more.
  • A new Targeting UI that displays information about whatever you are targeting. For monsters this includes health, attack types and weaknesses.
  • An Activities Panel that contains all the various activities that you can perform in a given zone!
  • A zoom button that allows you to zoom in when in Haven…
  • A general layer of shine and je ne sais quoi across all the other interfaces.

Part III: Sundry Changes

A handful of other updates have been made to go along with the updated UI. And here they are:

– Monster and player damage flash effects have been revamped for better clarity in combat.
– Vials and Capsule pickups have had their icons updated.
– Art for unbreakable blocks in the Clockworks has been updated.
– A player’s rank will now be shown with their name above their heads.
– Items will now show a message when they cannot be picked up.
– Player names are now white, green if a guildmate and blue if a friend. This color scheme is also used on the mini map.
– Vitapods can no longer be dropped, only replaced by superior versions.
– Bugfix: Dusky Long Feather added to the Iron Lockbox drop table.

Love is a Spiral, Splendored Thing

LP hat

Love isn’t just a thing that happens once a year: love, like a turret entrenched in the dungeon of a clockwork planet, is always there for you, or at least as a rare spawn that sometimes – sometimes! – is there right when you need it.

To celebrate the fleeting and off destructive nature of love, Spiral Knights for a limited time is featuring the Forever Love Puppy mask, available in-game from the Supply Depot. Nothing says true love like wearing a replica severed husk of the anthropomorphized cannon that wanted only to heal your injuries!

And if that is somehow not enough love for you, the Love Aura accessory is available for free with select purchases of crystal energy.

Both these items are available through February 19th, 2013.

For further meditations on love – true love! – here are the official release notes for today.

Spiral Knights: Kataclysmic Confrontation

Spiral Knights

Of Knights And Kats

Thousands of Kats. Millions of Kats! A horde of cursed black kats swarming the clockworks. Haunting corners, spooking the unwary, knocking things off shelves, asking to go out and then wanting to come right back in … and what-not.

The Story: Some unknown nefarious something/something has released an absolutely insane number of Kats into the Clockworks.

Awesome! Now what? Actually this is kind of a problem. A – wait for it — katastrophe. Now that we have that out of the way: seriously though it’s kind of bad down there. The Kat spooks are drawn to arcane energy, of the sort that Moorcroft Manor is just absolutely brimming with.

Like most Manors, Moorcroft keeps their arcane energy safely ensconced within magical grimoires. A grimoire is a type of book for people who wear robes. Just trust us that this is important.

Okay, Then: Advanced scouts have determined that a) Kats cannot read (that’s good!) and b) they are just eating the freaking things instead (that’s bad). Look, don’t ask us to explain how cats, let alone mystical undead ghost Kat versions, go about problem solving.

Spiral Knights

Event Overview

What: Kataclysmic Confrontation is a new event for Spiral Knights – it will run for a limited time, and, as with all invasions of phantom felines, will return in the future! Due to the excessive danger of the Black Kat invasion, these missions are only available for Knights who have achieved rank 4-1 and up.

Event Goals: The object of the event: to collect Ancient Page tokens from Black Kats. Ancient Page tokens will be awarded either as daily Prestige Mission rewards, or as drops from individual Black Kat monsters via missions from the Arcade.

Meow? The villain of this event – the Black Kat! This is a new monster type equipped with a power ability to snub any food you offer it … and curse your immortal soul! Seriously though, the Black Kats deliver curse damage, so watch out for that. They can be randomly found in place of any Spookat-type monster in a Tier 2 or Tier 3 level of the Clockworks.

Meow! Indeed! The Kataclysmic Confrontation event is scheduled to end on February 13th.

Moorcroft Manor: Going to Katmandu

Knights are now able to explore the Archives, a newly accessible area of Moorcroft Manor. Therein, you will find the Ancient Grimoires … and also the Black Kats who ate them. So there’s that.

  • Pembrooke, the Spookat caretaker of the Moorcroft Archives
  • Montague, the Historic Preservation Motivator. Montague is a token trader that exchanges rewards for Ancient Page tokens.
  • Moorcroft Alchemy Station, where Kat Gear can be crafted!
  • The mysterious Konjuring Kat. What koncerns this kitty? Perhaps if you had the right item …

Spiral Knights

New Gear and New Guild Hall Features

In addition to a veritable ocean of phantom Black Kats choking the gears of the Clockworks and devouring ancient books, there is also: New Stuff! and… New Furniture!

Many new Kat-themed helms of high quality are available from Montague, within the Moorcroft Manor addition.

For guild-minded Knights, there are also a variety of new themes available with which to decorate your Guild Halls – whole decoration schemes, as well as Environment themes, allowing you to have actual weather conditions inside your Guild Hall! Which is crazy. Crazy awesome.

Please see the official patch notes for additional information, changes, and details on new STUFF!

Spiral Knights: ‘Battle Sprites’ Preview

Spiral Knights: Battle Sprites Preview

Our good friends & partners at Three Rings have been hard at work of late, updating Spiral Knights with new features and adding plans for more.

We’re happy to share with you a preview of another upcoming feature for Spiral Knights — Battle Sprites!

Though they’ve made Cradle their home, the Knights, we would remind you, are not from these parts — before arriving, Battle Sprites — known to the Knights as “E-Class Battle Sprites” — were originally A.I.-powered companions for the Knights, used for planetary reconnaissance.

Now, the advanced technology of the E-Class Battle Sprites has begun reacting to the strange energy emanating from the Core: as Sprites are recovered from within the Clockworks, they are found to have adapted dramatically to their various environments … improving, adding combat capabilities, and honing their resolve to support their Knight companions!

So how will this work in-game?

E-Class Battle Sprites are companions: think along the lines of a robotic pet who will follow you around, only if your pet could also shoot fire or improve your ability to withstand onslaughts of lasers. The Battle Sprites will evolve, level-up, and gain new skills: they can add additional firepower to your party, or help by buffing you against enemy fire.

Would You Like To Know More?

Spiral Knights has always been designed to allow groups to form ad-hoc, without worrying about specific class roles. What Battle Sprites add are the ability to further strategize — your Knight can battle how they wish, while providing a depth and character to your party with added firepower or abilities to help group synergy. And of course, for those who like venturing solo into the clockworks, you can now have a bit of extra help.

Ultimately the idea is to provide more flexibility and more customization options to gameplay. Once Battle Sprites are active within the game, a new series of rank missions will be available in Haven: these will function as tutorials to explain the three basic “starter sprites” you can choose from, ending with you adopting a Sprite of your very own!

Here’s a quick preview of the three “basic” Sprite versions you’ll be able to pick from:

Drakon: The snarling little dragon of a bot does what dragons do — sets things on fire. Sets all the things on fire. If you favor head-on hand-to-hand combat, or you’re just a fan of the aforementioned fire, this is the Battle Sprite for you.

Spiral Knights: Battle Sprites Preview

Seraphynx: Graceful, feline, and mercurial — and an invaluable asset to any group! The Seraphynx is there to buff & assist, adding flexibility and defense to any journey into the clockworks.

Spiral Knights: Battle Sprites Preview

Maskeraith: Just look at those glowing, calculating eyes — it should be immediately clear that Maskeraith is here help Knights who prefer to engage in the arts of subtly, sabotage, and crippling enemies from a distance — this alien looking bot can curse and cripple foes to allow their Knight to deliver the killing blow!

Spiral Knights: Battle Sprites Preview

I want one! When Can I have one?

Battle Sprites are currently in development — being re-calibrated and tested following their recovery from within the Clockworks — and should be available during the first half of this year. Stay tuned for more information!

There is a lot more on the way for Spiral Knights, as well … as with Guild Halls, Battle Sprites were a response to suggestions and feedback from the Spiral Knights community. Stay tuned for more, and we’ll continue to give you sneak peeks at what’s being worked on!

Spiral Knights: Winterfest Event

Spiral Knights - Winterfest

Cradle spins through darkness! The Core glows at the center, hot and distant! But on the surface, Cradle is blanketed in the icy grip of winter. Which means the grandeur of snow. And also, presents.

Presents! Because snow. Because Winterfest. Happy Winterfest, everyone!

Yes! It is the time of year when Impostoclaus appears in the Haven Town Square, dispensing presents (OR ARE THEY?) (yes, they are!) and also cheer, which is less quantifiable than presents.

Available with Winterfest, from now through January 3rd, we have a new Mission, a new Lockdown map, unique seasonal decorations, and all kinds of prizes!

Spiral Knights - Winterfest

Mission: Save Winterfest!

Alert the pundits! For there is a War on Winterfest.

The gremlin town of Emberlight is under siege by an appropriately named faction of gremlins, the ‘grinchlins’, who want to actually steal presents from the town’s orphans. And destroy Impostoclaus. Because they hate freedom.

This is a limited-time prestige mission – it’s up to YOU to save Emberlight and help deliver the presents whilst battling your way through a grinchlin-infested back alley. This unique mission has Knights guarding presents against would-be thieves while racing to defend Impostoclaus himself from attack!

New Lockdown Map: Avenue

Spiral Knights - Winterfest

Battle through a snowy arena with traditional weapons of the Winter Knight – snowballs and swords – find secret paths to your objective, and have a jolly good time as you battle for supremacy of a bleak & frozen cityscape!

Prizebox Promotion

From now through January 3rd, select energy purchases receive a FREE Winterfest Prize Box and Frosty Prize Box – these boxes are unlocked and contain a variety of possible prizes, including Guild Hall furnishing and the elusive Impostoclaus Outfit!

Spiral Knights - Winterfest

More Presents! More Prizes! More WINTER!

Each Prize Box also includes random handfuls of Winter Confetti and Flawed Snowballs that you can throw anywhere, as well as a chance at additional prizes, including Trinket Slot and Weapon Slot Upgrades, Krogmo Coin Boosters, and Heat Amplifiers!

You can also exchange items earned in missions during Winterfest, as well as Krogmo Coins, for Winterfest items.

Spiral Knights: Official Soundtrack Volume II is Out Now!

Spiral Knights

If you are a fan of Spiral Knights, then you are likely a fan of the game’s music: Charming, moody, exciting orchestral arrangements accompany your knight from the moment they crash land on Cradle through every journey into the Clockworks.

The music, composed by Harry Mack, is now available in a second volume!

The first volume is already out, and now you can get a set of 23 new high-quality, remastered, and extended tracks. There are the complete versions of in-game tracks, so you can hear pieces in their entirety without the fade-outs required by normal game-flow.

The music is available essentially everywhere, including for purchase via iTunes and Amazon.

You can also hear it through: Spotify, Myspace, eMusic, Zune, Rhapsody, Nokia, iHeartRadio, VerveLife, Google Play, simfy, Muve Music, Deezer, and Rdio.

Lastly, if you missed the original Spiral Knights soundtrack, check out info about it here.

Spiral Knights: Guild Hall Expansion

Spiral Knights

Hail! A new update, for Spiral Knights!

It’s easy to forget, but the Knights on Cradle weren’t born there – crash-landing and finding refuge in the town of Haven, they have ventured ever inward towards the Core, for the sake of Knightly honor and adventure.

Still, Knights need a place to hang their helmet — a rack for their swords. A place to hoist a flagon and discuss things of great import.

Guild Halls. What I’m getting at is Guild Halls.

Existing Guild Halls are now open for upgrades – turn your guild’s simple living space into a mighty fortress! Decorate, train, and commune with other knights … and make a bulwark against the darkness to come, for Spiral Knights has only just begun to explore the true depths of Cradle…

Spiral Knights

Guild Hall Expansion – Features

  • Customize and expand your Guild Hall with Design Mode, accessible from the guild Command Console
  • Purchase vendor and service rooms
  • Buy furniture and decorate your new rooms from the Birdson Emporium
  • Guild Upgrades: Increase guild roster size and guild storage.
  • Special training hall for guild members!
  • Open your Guild Hall to the public: meet prospective recruits or throw a lavish party!

Click here to read a more detailed description of features.

Homecoming Celebration & Guild Creation

Eventually, a house – or a planet – stops being just a house and becomes a Home. Expanded guild halls seems like as good a time as any to hang that “Home Sweet Home” sign, and so, here’s to a Homecoming Celebration!

As such, presents:

-Each Knight will receive a Battle Stand furnishing item, Honor Blade sword, and Honor Guard shield just if they log in during the Homecoming Celebration event.
-Additional gifts will be awarded based on Mission Ranking.
Click here for more details on rank & item awards.

Additionally, the cost for creating a guild is now set at 50,000 Crowns. These are instantly deposited into a guild’s Treasury upon guild creation. Money from the guild treasury is used to purchase guild upgrades, and cannot be removed once deposited.

As a special bonus, all current guilds will receive an extra 50,000 Crowns deposited into their Guild Treasury!

Haven Garrison

The Spiral Order has also decided to run with the theme of home, setting up a permanent Garrison, on the Eastern side of the Haven town square. The Garrison contains the Hall of Heroes, the main Guild Hall, and additional facilities still being worked on . . .

  • The Garrison Guild Hall allows you to access your personal Guild Hall, or any other Hall open to the public
  • Exiting a Guild Hall will deposit you back outside the Guild Hall in the Haven Garrison
  • Hall of Heroes has been given a visual overhaul

Spiral Knights: Once Upon A Harvest, Darkly

Spiral Knights - Dark Harvest

Once upon a Harvest, Darkly, while you plundered Clockworks shadow keys, for many a quaint and curious lockbox of forgotten gear …

Be thankful this Harvest Season that this crude Poe pun extends no further – and then, celebrate! The harvest season is upon us – and on the planet Cradle, that means reaping what you’ve sown: in this case, you have sown darkness. Darkness that you can turn into candy, and then you turn that candy into masks. Masks you can wear. Because that’s how the Clockworks rolls.

Dark Harvest Event

Throughout the event, all Clockwork Tunnels-style levels (such as Power Complexes and Blast Chambers) now have a chance to spawn special rooms inhabited by the Punkin King, monarch of this harvest holiday: give him a visit, and see what he has in store for you — candy tokens, or even something else …

There is also a new prestige mission — available daily throughout the event, this mission offers a guaranteed encounter with the Punkin King!

Notes: Both via the Arcade or the Prestige Mission, Tier 1 awards the fewest candy tokens while Tier 3 awards the most candy tokens. Candy tokens come in three varieties (Hard Candy, Sour Candy and Sweet Candy) and can be exchanged in the Haven Town Square.

Spiral Knights - Dark Harvest

Candy Tokens and Prize Boxes

Candy Tokens can be exchanged in the Haven Town Square for gnarly masks – and also prize boxes!

Click here for a full list of mask types as well as prize box information.

Each Dark Harvest Prize Box also includes random handfuls of Trick or Treat Confetti as well as a chance to receive even more prizes — Trinket Slot and Weapon Slot Upgrades, Krogmo Coin Boosters, and Heat Amplifiers.

Oh yes: and Trick or Treat Confetti is totally normal confetti that launches a normal, unaltered pumpkin into the air, and then nothing else happens … right?

Dark Harvest event ends November 1st!
