Tommy Tallarico – You Ask The Questions
Not only that, he tours the world with his own video game concert series Video Games Live – which is known to feature a Sonic medley of course! Tommy’s also a big fan of the Sonic games, so he was naturally rather excited at the opportunity to create some music towards the soundtrack to Sonic & The Black Knight. (In fact Tommy very kindly sent me a track of his appearing in the game for me to have a listen to and I can honestly say its cracking!) Anyway, Tommy kindly agreed to us having a bit of a Q&A with him, but we both thought it’d be pretty good if a fair chunk of those questions came from you! Now we’ve done this before with Richard Jacques and you guys came through with a whole bank of questions on all sorts of topics, so if you want to ask Tommy a question about his career, his work on Sonic & The Black Knight or any other topics like that leave a comment with your name and you might well find we’ll send it on to him for it to be answered. I’ll probably send on about 15 or so questions so if you ever wanted to ask Tommy Tallarico something, now’s the time! Get commenting! Edit: Tommy’s unlikely to know specific plot points guys – and even if he did is unlikely to be able to divulge them so bare that in mind, eh? EDIT 2: Thank you for your questions guys, we’re not accepting any more.

Tommy Tallarico is a world record holder, in fact the Earthworm Jim composer has been involved in more video game soundtracks than anybody else in the entire world.

Questions for TT eh? Great work AAUK!
How did you get started in Game Audio?
With an established character/series such as Sonic, how much leeway do you/the dev team allow with musical direction, and the sound palette?
Speaking of sound palette, are there any specifc sounds/effects you have created for the Medievil (sp?) setting of ….Black Night?
Finally, can we expect music from ….Black Night to appear in future Video Games Live concerts? PS Please play Fable next time you are in London!

Ok 3 questions coming from me, in a similar vein to what I asked Sir Jacques since they genuinely interest me:
1) What musical styles and artists have influenced your music over the years?
2) What influenced you to go into music and composition?
3) What made you want to compose for games, and how do you think it differs from composition for other media such as film?

Wow, this will be neat!
Okay…
I what I want to know is, what percentage of the stages in the game will feature your music, and the rest will be by Jun correct?
And is Richard only doing the cutscene music, or will he be able to sneak in some stage music or even some theme songs?
Same with you. Are you doing any theme songs, or are you just strictly doing some stage themes?
Finally, is it just you, Jun, and Richard on the team (including the rest of Crush 40 of course), but are there any other groups involved?
I hope you don’t mind me including Jun and Richard into my questions.

A rather geeky question but I’m curious about these sorts of little things:
- When composing a piece of music that will repeat “forever” throughout the level in-game, do you tend to do a complete track and then edit in the repeat, or design the track to accomodate the repeating point from the start of composition?
- Are you given a brief or do you get to actually play/view the levels/scenes you’re composing tracks for to get inspiration? And if you do play, do you imagine the overall “sound” or instrumentation of the yet-to-be music or get particular melodies in mind?
- I see you composed music for Cool Spot. =D That soundtrack was awesome and a big part of my childhood, thanks.
Okay last one wasn’t a question but meh. X3

Tommy, you’ve worked on a lot of video games soundtracks in your time, and I imagine you have listened to even more including Sonic the hedgehog ones (I hope) which can be of very mixed in style, going into the Sonic and the Black Knight project did you have any preconceptions about what kind of music you wanted to create, and did previous artists like who have worked on Sonic like Richard Jacques and Jun Senoue?

It’s always great to get a chance to have some questions forwarded to people that have already become reputable in their profession. Here are a few questions I came up with, hopefully one of them will be answered.
- Video game music is different from conventional music because it needs to be the backdrop for the setting that the player interacts with. Are there ways you approach music for video games that would be discouraged if it were mainstream music? What kind of things do you really focus on to make it the music for the backdrop rather than the typical song?
- One other aspect of game soundtracks that sets them apart from other kinds of tunes is that they have the reputation of providing a higher emphasis on ambiance and synthesized sound. Have you used these specific devices often and do you have any observations on how these are, or ought to be used? How do you feel about this kind of music versus orchestrated (such as “Super Mario Galaxy”) or playlist (such as “Red Alert”) focused video game music?
- I understand you have contributed some to “Sonic and the Black Knight”, though I am unfamiliar with some of the previous projects mentioned. Has contributing to “Black Knight” been different from your previous projects? Were there any melodic themes or motifs in particular that you focused on or which had inspired you in the process of creating the game’s music?
- It is hard to go through the Sonic fan community without running into evidence that some of the fanbase has been disillusioned and divided. Things can get ugly, though they will at times prove that they all have a common idol. As a Sonic fan yourself, what is your view of Sonic’s sometimes-embarrassing resume and his recent ‘new direction’ with “Sonic Unleashed”, and the Rush and Story Book series? Have you ever seen Sonic’s fans that gather on the internet, and if so, what are your general feelings towards the blue hog’s internet fanbase? Is there anything you would like to say to us specifically?
—–
Thank you so much, to both AAUK for setting this up, and Tommy for taking the time to answer some of our questions! I look forward to hearing what you have to say, regardless of which questions were chosen and which weren’t.

Hey, I love your work man, Just wanted to get that out. Anyways, is Sonic and the Black Knight On-Rails? Everyone who has tested the game says no, but a few gameplay clips show Sonic running on a seemingly set path, and making turns too sharp for a control stick. Could you tell me if it’s on-rails or not?
Also, what’s the name of that Sonic form in Golden Armor in a trailer? That was cool.

Heres a question:
How did you find mixing medieval themes with Sonic music-wise? Did it turn out how you expected initially? Were you suprised when SEGA asked you to produce music for a game with Sonic being a knight? Did you take any inspiration from any other music, if so then which?
Oooookay, so its a few questions

The Sonic game soundtracks have spanned a variety of genres over the years, from the guitar-heavy hard rock of the Sonic Adventure titles, to dance music and even latin themes. How can you relate the soundtrack for Sonic and the Black Knight to to the soundtracks of prior Sonic games? Are we going to see something that bears similarity to the PC/Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast with the involvement of Richard Jacques, or does the new soundtrack take a completely different turn than prior games have?

Can’t miss out on the opportunity I suppose so here it goes:
I was there when Mr Jacques did the Sonic meddley 3 years ago here in London. I was fortunate enough to go again back in November 2008 but sadly there was no Sonic meddley. Do you think that there will ever be a time when this set will return to Videogames Live here in London? Also just out of curiosity but any plans to ask SEGA for permission on setting up more SEGA themed music sets?
What kind of music style did you compose for Sonic and the Black Knight and what inspired it? Were there any ideas that weren’t possible to include when composing music for it?
Seeing as how much music has advanced in videogames where do you think that it will go from here? Right now for some games the music score is of the same quality as the game so would be interesting to see what you think can still be improved.
While in Japan game music soundtracks are very popular it still seems to be a lesser known concept in the West. Do you think that it is unwise of most publishers to not release their musical masterpieces onto the public or safer because of not getting profits? Any ideas as to how this could be changed?
Well these are all my burning questions that I can think of but it has been a pleasure to see and hear Mr Tallarico perform on stage along with the rest of the orchestras/musiciasn included. Keep up the brilliant work and hope to see you again at another show here in London. : )

One of my favorite style of music that you compose is Trance, and specifically, one of my favorite Trance is the song entitled “Subterranean” from Earthworm Jim 2. It was so relaxing and wonderful, and on the Anthology album, the addition of the Guitar and its solo was nothing short of amazing. While the Sonic series usually involves fast paced music, some of the more memorable tracks happen to be some of the slow and ambient songs just as well. Will we be seeing any Trance/Ambient songs for the Black Knight?
