Project Needlemouse Character Countdown – Finale and Concept Art!Happy Friday everyone! The big day is finally here. After a week of blog comments, facebook posts, forum threads, and twitter updates, we have arrived at the end of the Needlemouse Character Countdown – and we think many of you are going to be pleased with the results. First off, some well deserved kudos to all of you out there in the Sonic community. Together, you broke the records for most/fastest comments on any SEGA Blog entry, ever. On Tuesday, you did the same for Facebook statuses. On Wednesday, you guys set a new record for the most amount of users ever logged into our forums. And yesterday, on Twitter, all of us – with some help from Segata Sanshiro – created the biggest push to get SEGA on the trending topics list in history. What you all have accomplished in these last five days is something you should be proud of. It speaks to the passion that drives many of us who still have so much hope for Sonic, and for the games he stars in. Today, we are about to break the trend that has continued on for many years. To the thousands of you out there asking for a game where Sonic is the only playable character – rejoice. As of today, your wish has been granted. In Project Needlemouse, there will be no new characters – playable or otherwise. The focus will remain solely on one blue hedgehog. If you’re now the most overjoyed person in the world, or even if you’re still curious about more, let us know in the comments below! In addition, we’re pleased to also present the first piece of Project Needlemouse Concept Art as a bonus – a special thank you to everyone who took the goals we’d set and then raised the bar even higher! This art reveals an enemy from the game – but at the same time, it also reveals much more about the spirit, and direction, that Project Needlemouse is taking. For all of you older fans who were stoked by the news above, this should be the icing on the cake. Take a look, and click to see the full-sized image. There’s much more in store for Project Needlemouse – including lots more info on the game that is soon to come. And so, after five days of awesome interaction and thousands upon thousands of correct trivia responses, you all can now take a well deserved break – even if your anticipation levels for this game may have just increased tenfold. We hope you guys are as excited for this game as we are. From all of us here at SEGA – well done! [From: SEGA America Blogs]

To be honest, if the game stayed 2D or at least 2.5D I wouldn’t mind if every character under the sun was playable.
Having said that, I still like what I’m reading. But not even a CPU controlled Tails tagalong?

YES. No more extra characters we don’t need. If you add more characters it would have ruin the story cause there shouldn’t be a story besides get Robotnik. Anyone who supported extra characters is an awful fan. Go Sega team. I don’t have anything wrong with knuckles tail though cause they were in the game before it got outrageous.

I just wanted to say that I have been a fan ever since I had a Megadrive at the age of about 13. Im now 30 and I have played all the itterations of Sonic since. After Sonic Adventure, I felt the 3D Sonics went downhill, sorry guys. The characters were uninteresting and they were too kiddy themed with the stories and cut scenes. However, saying this I loved Sonic Unleashed, you guys deserve an accolade for that Sonic game, it was brilliant. Much more on par with the old feel of the games. Most of the 2D ones on the Nintendo hand helds have also been brilliant so I am looking forward to this a lot. All I would ask is that you please make it challenging. Sonic Unleashed was challenging and I enjoyed playing it. While going back to 2D is indeed a very cool idea, I am also aware that 2D games compared to todays standards are very easy. I would be through one in a few hours. I have high hopes and Im sure you’re going to create something very cool. All the best from a devoted fan.

Sonic’s the only playable character? That’s too bad. 3&K’s playable roster was great: Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. I had hoped that they would be included to further attract fans of the classic games.
Posted by Phil on January 15th, 2010 at 11:45 pm
Comment # 35
What about Tails and Knuckles?
Why were they not even included on the list?
They too were a part of the “old roots”, nor did there characters take away from the great experience of the classics Sonic 2 and Sonic 3. They themselves are as much classics as Sonic is.
While it is great too see that Sonic going back to his 2-D roots, why were Tails and Knuckles, who two were part of the 2-D roots, not in it or even mentioned? Will they ever be main characters again?

Okay: Make an old-spirited 2D game starring only Sonic.
BUT PLEASE, FOR CHRIST’S SAKE; DO NOT DROP THE AWESOMETASTIC DIRECTION YOU TOOK FOR SONIC’S DAYTIME STAGES IN THE 360/PS3 SONIC UNLEASHED.
You can make 2D games all you want, but the daytime Sonic Unleashed stages, so reminiscent of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 Sonic Stages, were just too awesome to describe with words. Why not make an Unleashed-style game where Sonic is the only playable character? And by that I mean only OUR TRUE BLUE BLUR, fast as ever. No ugly Werehogs.
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Unleashed’s Daytime stages were truly the best experiences i’ve EVER had from the hedgehog, even though i’ve been a Sonic fan since Genesis (Megadrive here in europe) days.

Looks to me to be a… “Shell-Cracker” And as for Sonic being the only playable character? hit the ball out of the park. 8 ) Been looking forward to Needlemouse since it’s trailers release. All we can hope for is some old’ school physics, and throw more classic in the blender – though with those quiz questions we had – I think that’s what SEGA is going for. Thankyou!

I absolutely love this! Back to its roots- and the concept art looks like there’s a classic feel but enhanced and modernized for a whole new era of Sonic games!
The way it looks, I’m -really- hoping that they’re taking a lot of cues from the anime feel of the Sonic CD game!

Ok, if I read it right, there will be no NEW characters… doesn’t mean there won’t be any OLD characters. Tails and Knuckles are not on this rejected list… So… they will be in this new game (but maybe not playable).
At least I hope so, cause Sonic without Tails or Knuckles is not really a Sonic game.

Now, it all comes down to what can either make it or break it. It’s only got Sonic, it’s 2D, it’s going for the feel of the classic games.
Now we just need to make sure there will be no gimmick and Sonic doesn’t transform into anything, and we need to have the assurance that the level design will go back to the quality of the old days as opposed to the lazy, flawed, and played out designs we have seen the last few games.

I’m really glad that Sonic is the only one on that list who made it in. Then again, where are Tails and Knuckles? The game doesn’t feel complete without them (just like Sonic Rush). I’ve always had Tails running behind when i was playing as Sonic, thats the way it should be just like Sonic 2 and 3. I’ve also enjoyed playing as Tails alone with the flying ability or Knuckles alone with the climb/glide ability. I really hope there will be a cheat or something that unlocks those two (like in Sonic Advance with the Tails cheat).

What I would have loved to know what would be if the story begins the future and then do a flashback to spend can style Sonic CD. Because if so, in this case because the sonic know the existence of emerald and may not be accompanied. And with a bit of luck we should not find are own double, not to change the future (what eggman try to do) if the story looks like I am for its 100% and if its not those I would 100% too.

“Sonic without Tails or Knuckles is not really a Sonic game”
… except for Sonic 1? Still my favourite Sonic after all these years! Although I did like Tails. Sonic 1 had the best bonus stages by far too.
I’m really, really hoping that Sega include an in-depth level designer with this game that people can share on-line, if it was well done I think it would add a whole new level of longevity to the game.
I’m also hoping they get Masato Nakamura to do all the music. They really should.
Its difficult though, isn’t it? As much as I desperately want to see Sonic going back to his 2D roots, I’m hoping for more than just a regurgitation of the original 16 bit games… its a big challenge. So far though, so promising.

I think it’s a pretty bad move not included Knuckles or Tails, they added variety to the gameplay while at the same time being unique character designs.
Some of the newer characters definitely needed to be remove, but getting rid of these two was a bad move IMO.

I know that you had them in Sonic Chronicles. But… you couldn’t get to play with them that much like you could in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle/ Adventure DX and so on. I liked nursing them and having them play in activites.
The best thing about them was that you could choose what they could look like – they could look like Shadow, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Nights and even the blue blue himself!
Pretty please!

PLEASE READ THIS!
I am A young Sonic fan. I am currently 12 years old and became a sonic fan about 3 years ago, after getting Sonic Adventure DX for GameCube. I also have MEGA COLLECTION. Mega collection had Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles and so on. I am an original Sonic fan. I love the Sonic Adventure Series as well. Please don’t flame me, I might have not been born when the originals were out but I am a massive fan of them. Go SEGA!
SEEEEEEEEEGAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

We need Knuckles and Tails as well. Maybe as another character with his own story completely. Don’t get me wrong I think that a game with JUST sonic will rock but i am just giving my 2 cents since sonic 3 and knuckles is my favorite sonic game

Well, I was thinking that you could have left the other characters (EXCEPT FOR THE NEW ONE, OF COURSE) as playable optionals, as in Sonic 2, 3 and & Knuckles, but with no relation to the storyline.
Back to basics is pretty nice too, though.

seems to be going down the right path so far. but i’m hoping the visuals are 3D and the gameplay is 2D. i always wanted to play a sonic game that hearkens back to the original 2D gameplay style with 3D visuals… kinda disappointing if it’s full 2D

Im kinda disappointed by project needle mouse, in Sonic Unleashed all you guys need to do was Dump the Warehog idea and it would have been a Sonic Legend next to Sonic Adv. and Sonic Adv. 2. Needle mouse seems to be taking another step backwards when you could go forward instead.
Sega Had a good story, epic CG (i mean textures were awesome), Awsome SONIC gameplay, but the night stages sucked. Sega implemented the characters flawlessly, So why are you now taking them away?
Me and many like me would view this as a step back from the 3D 2D switching and the Speed that Sonic unleashed seems to gave.
