As you may have seen from our TW.com
news report Gamespot recently held a Medieval II competition. Their City under
Siege competition came to a climactic conclusion recently via their Tournament
TV set up.
CA created a battle map especially for
the event, pitting an attacking Timurid army against a defending English army.
Played out in the form of a siege of a city in the midst of a sweltering
desert, the two finalists took turns to both defend and attack.
The movie of the final is well worth a watch and can be found
here.
It was interesting to see how the two finalists differed in their tactics and
also how the different units faired against each other.
The first battle saw Colin Ashwell play
as the Timurids and Dominic Hilderbrand play as the English. As with any siege
scenario, the aim was hold the centre of the city for as long as possible once
the attacking armies had broken through. The armies were set in several
different places across the map with some of the defending force outside the
walls.
Colin’s strategy was to keep these
forces outside and hold off the attack while organising a central force in the
city. After the breach of the walls with a bombard by Dominic the battle
however soon moved to the streets where the power of the elephant unit was
clear for all to see. Colin however managed a respectable 21 minutes in terms
of the defence of the square.
Next the tables were turned and it was
Dominic’s turn to defend. His strategy differed in that he decided to withdraw
all his troops inside the walls. While some were lost as the Timurid cavalry
caught up with them Dominic managed to save the vast majority of his force,
including some large cavalry units.
The resulting blood bath in the centre
of the city was quite a sight to behold and I highly recommend you take a look.
I won’t say how Dominic faired in comparison as really I’ll be spoiling it
before you even watch the footage. The scenario they used is also now available
so you can test your skill yourself here.
