Empire: Total War FAQ 6
Hi guys,
Welcome to our sixth Empire: Total War FAQ, where this month we tackle even more of your Land Battle questions…
Will guns be distinguishable by their appearance and smoke etc?
You will be able to tell the difference between very large, large, medium and small cannon, carronades, 8 and 10 inch mortars, rifles, carbines and muskets, I’m not sure you will get more granularity than that. We felt that anything more is unlikely to be noticed in the thick of battle.
If artillery gun crew lines are broken, will they flee to safer ground until its safe to return, or will they route from the field?
This question is not easily answered as it depends on the situation. If the artillery is sufficiently spooked, they will flee. If not, they will route to a safer place until they can return to their guns or the situation turns so bad they have to run from the field of battle.
Can we have the option to preview a battlefield before choosing battle?
Generals don’t always get to pick the ground that they fight on and great generals will even take the ground chosen by the enemy and make it their own. Or to put it another way: The current mechanism assumes that the battlefield chosen is the best that could be attained as a result of manoeuvre and counter manoeuvre of opposing forces and the limits of terrain in the area. We give the player time to review the battlefield in the deployment phase and there are a number of cues as to the likely composition of the battlefield obtainable by looking at the campaign map.
Will Empire: Total War generals (not captains) play a lesser role in field combat compared to previous Total War games?
It depends? If the question is: will they be less likely to be able to act like a powerful killing machine the answer is a categorical yes. In the period of this game generals were far less renowned for their individual prowess (although some exceptions are present that prove the rule – e.g. Charles of Sweden) in battle and much more for their ability to swing a battle by being at the right place at the right time and inspiring their troops with both good planning and sensible commands. In the same way, failure to place your general where he is most effective will result in problems keeping your troops from being quickly demoralised.
Will there be a “fire by rank” system for troops in line formation, e.g. British redcoats? And will you be taking into account that some armies may have better skills than others in some areas e.g. British troops could fire and reload their muskets faster then the French could?
The short answer to all that is yes but with some reservations. It will depend on a nation’s research into tactics, the units deployed, their experience, what system is used and how good they are compared to their opponents. The British were not always the best at everything. If they had been they would have beaten the Americans in the War of Independence, Wellington would not have needed the support of Blucher at Waterloo and he would not have said it was “a close run thing”.
Are different countries’ uniforms, colours and changes in uniforms included?
Yes but as much as we would like to include every uniform, every turn back, every button, every badge and every uniform colour represented by every nation, in the game, and reflect all those uniform changes in detail over the 18th century (100 years), the logistics really aren’t viable for a game made in the time we have.
As a result we chose to select a representative sample of uniforms from throughout the period to reflect that change and variety. Every nation has a “national colour” that we use to represent that nation and is featured strongly in their uniforms. On top of that we add variations, where we think its effective, in their uniforms that are appropriate either according to faction or unit type or in some cases both. That isn’t the end of things though.
Will Calvary with swords point their swords at the enemy who they are charging at instead of holding it upright like in “Rome: Total War”?
We completely overhauled the animations system for Empire. Cavalry will now lower their swords or lances in the final approach of a charge.
Can riflemen be ordered to hide in long grass and shoot when enemies are on top of them and then charge with bayonets?
Simple answer: Yes as long as they are trained in field-craft and you have researched the bayonet.
Early guns were very sensitive to damp and damage. Will this be represented in game?
Yes, of course. Rain and snow are both significant contributors to misfires and hang-fires, along with unit fatigue, training and morale states. If it is raining or snowing too much then gunpowder combat becomes next to impossible A particularly inept soldier can end up blinding themselves with a flash in the pan or rupturing a cannon and killing the crew.
Will the battle maps be bigger?
Yes they are. The battlefield playable areas are currently up to 1.4km2.
Will the environment determine movement rate and morale?
Yes both have a noticeable effect on the movement and morale of units, according to their origin and the environmental conditions
At the time of the American Revolution, the standard British six-pounder cannon had a crew of fifteen men working the gun (not just standing around it). Will we see this sort of realism reflected on the battlefield? If not, why?
Sadly, no we won’t have 15 men crews. This is because the choreography required was something we found to actually detrimental to gameplay as well as being incredibly complex to code. In the end we went for a smaller number that carry out a representative set of actions, most importantly those involving loading and firing.
Will it be possible to shot at the horses so they are dead, but the riders stand up and keep on fighting without their horses?
We are looking in to a suitable method of implementing this but we have yet to come up with a solution that works in all cases.
Will our men finally be intelligent enough to load their weapons while the enemy is still out of range, and then FIRE when the enemy gets into range?
That would depend on the player. Have you set your unit to fire at will or to fire when ordered? How well trained are your troops? If they have time, your units will change to their melee option.
Q: Will famous characters such as Wellington make an appearance in the game, and will they have special abilities to reflect their historical importance?
If the conditions are right they will.
What new character traits are there?
This is far too big a question to answer in an FAQ. Traits and ancillaries certainly haven’t been ignored. They have been updated and crafted to fit the period. Per character you can expect to see more meaningful, character building and far less contrary traits and ancillaries. Although this will mean fewer traits per character there will be no less variety than previous games.
That wraps it up for this month. Keep your questions coming on our official forums and stay tuned to www.totalwar.com for the latest updates!
Take care,
Mark O’Connell
one thing that was disturbing in the previous games (rome, medieval) was that even if just one soldier from a regiment hits another enemy regiment, the entire regiment stops, and sometimes get killed. have you done any shanges to this?

Will there be different languages being spoken during battle? Example: I am fighting as the Colonials and im in a battle with the Spanish, I hear taunts, yells, and orders being spoken in Spanish from the other army while my men speak english.

Will the player be able to get a family tree of the competing factions and vice versa? It would make since that your royal family would know the names of the other family members. On that note how does the American faction leadership work, being that it is not a monarchy? Finally how far does the game extended to in history? To the American Civil War?

So wont it get kinda boring whatching your men just stand and fire over and over again. The only thing I find intersting is the naval comabt. Im not saying that I hate it, ive had Rome and Medival but wont musketts and cannons get alittle boring. No offense. And will there be different types of fighting. In Rome they just hit each other and they died. In Medieval they kinda had little moves that killed people, will Empire play it out like they would be actually fighting someone in real life

Example i see on the map a river beetwen two rivers and suddenly i engage my army in war with some other opponent do the battlefield inside will be a close same like seen on map before or will be as before approxamitly every battlefield near mountain or river or plate will be the same.I hope that you understand me and another question do will be related campaing with real time history.
My regards thanks

what would happen if one gun unit had already taken up position in a building, and an enemy gun unit was moved to the same building. Would they fight in the building, or would the enemy unit be denied access to the building? Or could a mele unit enter the building to take out the gun unit?
Posted by sam on October 22nd, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I seriously think they should release what factions they’re going to use! Also, i think that the persians should seriously be included in this. In the 18th century, the persians are just coming back from defeat by the afghans to try and reclaim their land. It would be a very good addition, because it would include very differrent tactics from european factions because of the afghans and persians lack of significant artillery and gunpowder technology.

Will players be able to manipulate the ecomomy more than in Medival 2 total war. Such as Imperial Glory.

i’ve been a long term fan of total war since shogun… and very excited about empire total war.. as an experienced gamer of this franchise i have a different idea to share to make this the ultimate strategy gaming experience with so much flexibility and possibilities… something for the developer to ponder…
when say total war, we always prone and committed to develop the most advanced and strongest military units to CONQUER the world.. just to stray our mind off for a different alternative… let say we can control the world by diplomacy and wealth, by controlling the trade of gold, spices and et cetera… and with that using proxies and bribery to neighbouring countries as our paid soldiers… controlling other countries by commercial means…
with this.. it can open so much possibilities and flexibilites to conquer the world with both BRAWN and BRAINS…
my two cents…

I’m really excited about the government systems in the new empire total war game. I’m wanting to know more about all them available. such as if you have a constitutional monarchy, will they’re be two different sets of characters, one for the royal family and that of the parliament? and how will a republic government be shaped? and is it possible to go from monarchy, to republic back to monarchy like france did following the revolution?

Posted by colin on October 27th, 2008 at 12:45 am
On FAQ 6 when someone asked if they would reload when they are outa of range i think he meant tha in Medieval Total War 2 they musketteers would wait until the enemy was so close THEN reload thier guns and by the time they were done they were dead. I think the question whould have been “Will units start the battle with already loaded rifles?”

Posted by ILUVTOTALWAR on October 27th, 2008 at 4:47 am
In previous Total War Games units such as priests have been used to sow discontent in an enemy’s cities. Could a similar trait be given to assassins or diplomats? Perhaps instead of or in addition to religion, they could use the ideals of the Enlightenment period if playing as France or the continuation of established divine right of kings if playing as one of the other European powers.

Good day
Ive a question. In Medieval, when playing france or england invading one country or the other was very easy. I would build a fleet and in one turn i would be with an army on the other side of the channel. One thing about 18 cent. geo politics is that crossing the english channel with a sizeable army was very difficult, especially for france. this caused the real war between the two countries to be in the colonies. Playing with france gives you a large country with lots of colonies but with england always a thorn on your side. If invading england is as easy as crossing the channel in one turn and rushing to london than realism will be seriously compromised. The only thing I had to do was to avoid engaging any enemy ship that stood between my coast and britains. Will empire reflect this difficulty of landing troops on british soil?
Congrats on the great job so far

In regards to shooting the horses and having the riders survive, I believe you should impliment a system where upon the death of the cavalry a certain percentage of the time the rider will survive and after the battle add one healed casualty to another appropriate infantry unit. This could be explained by the rider being trapped under his horse, mourning the death of his/her steed, going into shock or not being able to continue fighting due to an injury that was not fatal. They would not join a cavalry unit because now they are one horse short and the rider has no steed. This can be further improved by adding an exta group of horses upgrade like “prolific breeding” or some such and will cause all surviving cavalry to take a new horse from the extras and reform into the original unit after the battle

I LOVE the total war series. It is by far the best, and most brain requiring strategy game on the market. I am completly siked about a possible 1 vs 1 campaign mode, but wonder would it be the same as a single player campaign… or would certain adjustments have to be made to make it possible. Another question i have, is would each player need a seperate copy of total war? e.g., if i wanted to play with my father in the next room, would he need to buy his own copy, instead of always borrowing mine
Okay, 1 more question…. Would weather, and terrain affect a moving army in the campaign game? E.g., Would Napoleon’s armies still freeze on the way to Russia?

Hi,
Really sounds great but for next time can you answer whether SLI will be supported? Medieval wasn’t.
Also the Americans didn’t defeat the British we all know they couldn’t of done it without the support of the French, Dutch etc. Generally the british where more effective than the French.

In the trailers I see many weapons and tactics that seem anachronistic, especially hand-to-hand combat, which wasn’t as prominent in 18th century warfare, unless used in defensive situations and or in a rare bayonet charge.
In Empire will melee combat be common in land battles, and if so why?
How does the new game handle ranged combat differently than past Total War games?

3 questions:
1) Will all of the Americas, Africa, Australia and Asia be on the campaign map?
2) What exact year does the campaign begin and end?
3) Will there be any historical wars? (besides the Napoleonic Wars) Such as (depending on when exactly the campaign takes place) The War of the Spanish Succession, The Great Northern War, 7 Years War, ETC

Actually the british were too orderley in their assaults the american way of fighting was far superior to theirs. (Of course we adopted your way of fighting a war in a “line”) american soldiers at the time tried to be snipers in a way this is in response to comment number 6 by david shaw and also the british weren’t the most powerful naval power at the time.

I was wondering if in custom battles, you will be able to have generals instead of in previous TW games when you could only have Captains.

I have a question regarding experience. I’ve played the total war series from the beginning and never completely understood one aspect of it. When a unit loses some or most of it’s troops and retrains or merges with another unit to replenish the unit to full strength, what factors determine the level of experienced retained by the unit?
Thanks.

Will you be able to zoom in and examine your settlements close up and see people walking around like you could in Rome? I know it’s a silly question, but I really liked that function, and it might determine whether I purchase a copy.

ive heard a good musketer could fire his musket 4 times in 1 minuite can the units in the game do this also

Is the road to independace an add-on the the campaign? Like the American revolution, since the Americans won the fight for independance around 1770 and the campaign starts at 1700…….are they going to start a colonie, settle lands, excetra.

i saw in some videos that the uniforms for the French Army are grey, yet this was to change after the French Revolution, my question is if we will be able to see this change and more importantly.
if there will be a French Revolution while playing the campaighn map?
if so how would it be, could you play on the side of the Revolutionaries or the Monarchy?
and if the Revolutionaries were to win, could we see the change in Uniforms, from the grey to the Revolutionary Blue, and more importantly, could we use Napoleon in the Campaighn?

In Empire total war, will players be able to steal military technology from other factions by using a spy?
Also, will we be able to buy/trade military technology and/or units from other factions say if we are really closely allied in the diplomacy window?

Will there be culumn formation. The french revolutionary army used massed column attacks on their enemies to break their lines. Will there be a colum attack formation ??

Hi,
will the diffrent nations have “special skills”, so the british have better ships and the prussians better trained infantry?
And can agents “buy” not regular units like german hunters?
Posted by German on February 9th, 2009 at 11:05 am
Can there be an order that will automaticly chase all enemy deserters after you have selected the “continue battle” option instead of monitoring your troops closely and ordering them to attack one by one
Posted by matthew on February 9th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
This was a tumultuous time for all monarchies throughout Europe. Will the Kings be the “battle kings” that they have been in all other Total War games? Will Queens be appearing and will they be “battle queens”? Will princesses still be able to run diplomatic errands in addition to family building or are they omitted all together? Are there other monarchal changes that you have made?

Two different kinds of flags were used in Ottoman Empire during18th and 19th centuries.. While three crescent on green represented the Islamic caliphate, crescents on red ground symbolized the military structure.. Are we going to see both?..

Hi, just a quick idea. If there is a lot of trade between to big cities at some point wouldn’t it be a good idea for a small town to appear on this busy trade route eventually. Giving the map an organic feel. New towns popping up allowing growth in relation to the economy.

The only extra thing I would want to ask is whether the campaign will be the three areas (India, Americas, Europe) linked together, or completely separate campaigns as in the Kingdoms expansion?

HORSES. I think for realism it would be nice to have either the rider or the horse die separately, rather than always together like in medieval.

is it true that the demo is coming today??

During the campaighn on Egypt, due to the shortage of supplies Napoleon had at times to assighn men to scavange for cannonballs from the enemy during sieges and some battles.
i know that as a videogame its content is only limited by the present technology but i wondered.
if your artillery unit runs out of ammunition, could you have them scavange for cannonballs fired previously?

Hello, I installed demo and play allowed battles. Game is wonderful. But want to ask something about cannons – first one is why can’t capture enemy cannons in game? Historically have a lot of battles where cannons are captured from enemies and turned against there previous owners. Other thing is one small problem in demo – american unit drop spikes over road before to be killed and when I moved my limbered cannons from one position on other on this road they just die – horses, crew, cannons, all. Maybe will be better if cannon unit will can to go round if need? Or only horses to die?

I watched a video of the demo and it looks like that the soldiers SCREAM when you kill them. Is that what the real game is going to be AAAGGGHHH!
Posted by Zachary on February 26th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Did the demo come out in a beta or alpha version?

Napo, of course they will see the troops once they fire, there will be muzzle flashes and smoke of course.

Will the game have a Portuguese faction?? when or how? Let us not forget the the Portuguese had the first (and last) standing EMPIRE in the world. I think since you have a playable Spanish, British factions (and even a Marathas faction (no one really knows this faction lol) why not a Portuguese Empire faction. Thank you and great work

Maybe spend more time on lag and server cashes..rather than units…had the game since its launch and have made it through once complete with Britain. Started a file of the United provinces…been 2 weeks and the play has been slower and can’t get past 1722. What i can’t figure is if steam is carrying the game why can’t they get it together? Im so tired of getting 3 crashes..4 crashes 5 crashes in a row.
