Mark O'Connell

Mark works as Online Marketing Manager at The Creative Assembly, running the Total War and company websites. When he isn’t playing the latest game releases, Mark spends his time continuing his mission to watch every film in existence (twice).

Hailing from Southampton, Mark has a degree in traditional 2D animation, an unlimited cinema pass and an inexplicable fondness for Jaffa cakes.

He was bitten by the travel bug after spending a year living in Los Angeles, and places on his must-visit list currently include Hawaii, Egypt, Japan, Australia and Loch Ness - because Nessie is still out there.

Since joining CA in September 2006, Mark has absorbed himself in all things Total War in a cunning attempt to improve his win/loss record in Medieval II's multiplayer mode.

When he isn't reporting on the latest Total War news or cooking up new features for the websites, Mark likes to get CA's BAFTA out of the display cabinet and practise his Oscar-worthy acceptance speech.

Biggest achievement to date; "Seeing five films in a row at the cinema, or possibly the time I received a funny audio message from Hulk Hogan!"

Calendar Competition - October 07

Calendar Competition - October 07

October has clearly captured your collective imaginations, resulting in a plethora of hand drawn images and Halloween-themed spookiness. We had so many calendar entries this month that I considered inventing a new month just to fit them all in! While Halloween is one of the better-known events in October, let us not forget the other […]

Calendar Competition - September 07

Calendar Competition - September 07

September has 9 letters in it and is also the 9th month of the year. Coincidence? I think not. The plot thickens further when you consider that septem means seven in Latin and was actually the seventh month of the Roman calendar up until 153 BC. When the British Empire finally adopted the current Gregorian […]

Calendar Competition - August 07

Calendar Competition - August 07

Originally called Sextilis in Latin, the month of August was renamed in honour of Augustus in 8 BC. It’s great to see you have been getting your creative juices flowing this month, as we received an unprecedented amount of drawings and paintings. It is getting increasingly hard to pick a winner - which is testament […]

Balancing the Battles of Medieval II: Kingdoms - The Process

Balancing the Battles of Medieval II: Kingdoms - The Process

When balancing the battles in Medieval II there are many factors to
keep in mind, not least the way in which our fans play the game. Some
players prefer a realistic simulation; some players want a tactical
balanced game and prefer good sprites over realistic animations; and
the majority want a bit of both.
This makes balancing the battles rather […]

Calendar Competition - June 07

Calendar Competition - June 07

Named after the Roman goddess Juno, and hopefully marking the beginning
of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, June has arrived. This month’s
Create A Calendar Competition saw an unprecedented number of screenshot
entries. But first, it’s time for something completely
different…
Kicking things off this month we have a
submission from Ruud Kroon in The Netherlands. Six months into the
contest, Ruud […]

Kingdoms -

Kingdoms - “For the fans, by the fans”

Medieval II had gone Gold and work began in earnest to have the first update ready. However, it wasn’t long before our thoughts turned to the expansion pack. Notebooks accompanied us everywhere we went and on many a late night, the complaints of our better halves would go something like: “When are you going to […]
